How to block ads in Microsoft Edge without breaking websites

By Freedom251 Team · · 13 min read

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use Microsoft Edge’s Balanced tracking prevention first, keep the pop-up blocker enabled, and fix failures with a site-specific exception or extension setting rather than weakening protection everywhere. Edge does not have one switch that removes every advertisement. Its built-in controls address trackers, automatically opened pop-ups, notifications and ad personalisation; ordinary ads embedded in page content generally require an extension.

The safest approach is to identify the type of advertising or privacy control involved, then change only that control for the affected site. The instructions and labels below reflect Microsoft support guidance checked on 13 October 2026; wording can vary slightly between Edge builds.

What Edge can block—and what it cannot

“Ads” in Edge can mean several technically different things. Choosing the wrong control is the usual reason a website stops signing you in, playing video or completing checkout.

What you see Edge control Scope and compatibility What to expect
Trackers used by sites and advertising networks Tracking prevention Browser-wide, with per-site exceptions Balanced is Microsoft’s recommended level and is designed to preserve normal site operation. Strict blocks more trackers but can break sign-in, video or other page features.
Windows or browser windows that open automatically Pop-ups and redirects Browser-wide, with an allow list Keep Blocked (recommended) enabled. Allow a trusted site only when a legitimate workflow needs a pop-up.
Messages sent through Edge or the operating system notification area Website notifications Per site Remove or block notification permission for the offending site. This is not general page-ad blocking.
Ads personalised from browsing activity Personalisation settings, Global Privacy Control and cookie choices Usually browser or account privacy settings These reduce profiling or signal a preference; they do not remove all ads from websites.
Banner, video or sponsored content embedded in a page Ad-blocking extension Extension-wide, with site access controls An extension can filter page content, but its filters or permissions can also interfere with site functions.

Microsoft states explicitly that “Website advertisements cannot be blocked by the Edge pop-up blocker.” See Microsoft’s pop-up guidance. A pop-up blocker therefore will not hide a banner that is part of the webpage itself.

A quick diagnosis before changing anything

Classify the symptom first. A new tab or window appearing without a click points to pop-ups or redirects. A message in the Windows notification area usually means notification permission. A banner, sponsored card or video slot inside the page is page content and needs an extension if you want it filtered. Slower loading, less targeted adverts or a sign-in/video failure after a privacy change points to tracking prevention, cookies or an extension.

Write down the exact action that fails and the setting changed immediately beforehand. This simple record prevents a common mistake: disabling several protections at once and then not knowing which one caused the problem.

Set Tracking prevention to Balanced

Balanced is the best starting point when your priority is fewer trackers without widespread breakage. Microsoft describes it as blocking potentially harmful trackers and trackers from sites you have not visited, while keeping sites working as expected. Content and ads may be less personalised.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Edge’s Settings and more menu (the three dots).
  2. Select Settings.
  3. Open Privacy, search, and services.
  4. Under Tracking prevention, select Balanced (Recommended).

Microsoft’s explanation of the levels is available in Learn about tracking prevention in Microsoft Edge. Balanced is a browser-wide setting, so it affects all sites unless you create an exception.

After changing the level, reload a few sites that matter to you rather than assuming every page will behave identically. Test a normal sign-in, a video, a shopping basket and any work or school web application you rely on. If those work, leave Balanced alone and adjust only the site or extension that produces a later problem.

Why Strict can break a site

Strict blocks potentially harmful trackers and most trackers across sites. Microsoft says it provides minimal personalisation but “could cause some websites to not behave as expected.” A site may rely on a cross-site component for authentication, embedded video, payment, comments or fraud checks. If one of those stops working immediately after selecting Strict, return to Balanced before changing several other settings.

Strict is therefore a deliberate privacy-versus-compatibility choice, not a universal ad-removal mode. It can reduce profiling while leaving the actual advert visible, and a broken sign-in or checkout is often a sign that a required cross-site component was blocked.

Add a tracking-prevention exception for one trusted site

Use an exception only after confirming that tracking prevention is the cause of the failure. An exception turns tracking prevention off for that site, allowing all trackers there, including potentially harmful ones; it is not a narrowly scoped “allow this one ad” switch.

  1. Go to Settings and more > Settings > Privacy, search, and services.
  2. Find Tracking prevention and open Exceptions (or the equivalent manage-exceptions control shown in your build).
  3. Select Add a site, enter the trusted site’s domain, and save it.
  4. Reload the site and test the exact feature that failed.

To investigate before adding an exception, select the site-information icon at the left of the address bar. Edge can show trackers blocked on that page. That view helps you distinguish a tracker-related failure from an extension, pop-up or notification problem.

Limit exceptions to sites you trust and remove them when the site no longer needs special treatment. You trade privacy for compatibility because the exception permits the site’s trackers to run. Check the exception list periodically; a forgotten entry can silently remain active long after a one-time task is finished.

How to test an exception safely

Open the site in a normal tab, reproduce the failure, add the exception, and reload. Test the same action again rather than judging by a cosmetic change. If sign-in, playback or checkout returns, the exception is probably relevant. If nothing changes, remove the exception and investigate extensions, pop-ups, notifications or site data instead. Keeping a short note of what the exception fixed makes later cleanup easier.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep the pop-up blocker on, and allow only a required workflow

Edge enables its pop-up blocker by default. Verify it at Settings > Privacy, search, and services > Site permissions > All permissions > Pop-ups and redirects. Leave Blocked (recommended) selected.

If a trusted service uses a genuine pop-up—for example, an identity-provider window, a document viewer or a payment step—add that site to the allow list on this page. Do not disable blocking globally to repair one workflow. After allowing it, return to the site and retry the action; remove the allowance if the workflow no longer requires it.

Pop-ups and redirects are separate from ordinary advertisements rendered inside a page. A page can contain intrusive banners while the pop-up blocker is functioning correctly. Conversely, a site can have no visible adverts and still need a pop-up for authentication or payment.

Stop website notifications that look like ads

Notification permission lets a site send messages through Edge or your operating system’s notification area, even when the tab is not open. Those messages are not page advertisements and are not controlled by the pop-up setting.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Settings and more > Settings > Cookies and site permissions (the section may be labelled Site permissions).
  2. Select Notifications.
  3. In Allow, find the site sending unwanted messages and choose Block or remove its permission.

Microsoft’s current instructions are in Manage website notifications in Microsoft Edge. Blocking a notification source does not filter banners or sponsored material inside webpages.

If several unfamiliar sites appear in the Allow list, remove permissions you do not recognise rather than changing every notification setting. This preserves notifications from services you intentionally use while stopping the source that is generating unwanted alerts.

Reduce personalised advertising without expecting ad-free pages

Turn off browsing-activity personalisation

Microsoft provides a setting that allows browsing activity to personalise Edge and Microsoft services. Turning it off limits that particular personalisation use; it does not remove advertisements supplied by websites or advertising networks. The setting and its implications are described in Microsoft Edge browsing activity for personalised advertising and experiences.

Global Privacy Control

Edge supports Global Privacy Control (GPC), a privacy-preference signal. Microsoft currently documents availability in the United States and cautions that individual sites may or may not honour it. GPC is not an ad blocker: it communicates a preference about the sale or sharing of personal information where applicable, while page ads can remain visible. See Global Privacy Control in Microsoft Edge.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

InPrivate browsing

InPrivate does not add ad filtering. It limits what Edge retains locally for that session, but websites can still display ads. Microsoft points to third-party-cookie blocking or Strict tracking prevention when the goal is to limit personalisation; those choices can reduce compatibility. Details are in Browse InPrivate in Microsoft Edge.

Do not treat an InPrivate window as a diagnostic replacement for normal settings. If a page works in InPrivate but not in a regular profile, extensions, stored site data or profile-specific permissions may be involved; compare those controls one at a time.

Filter ads embedded in page content with an extension

When the unwanted material is a banner, autoplay advert, overlay or ad slot inside the webpage, an ad-blocking extension is the relevant category of software. Edge supports extensions from its own Add-ons catalogue and can install compatible extensions from the Chrome Web Store.

  1. Open Settings and more > Extensions.
  2. Choose Get extensions for Microsoft Edge to browse Edge Add-ons. If you need the Chrome Web Store, enable the option to allow extensions from other stores when Edge presents it, then use the store’s install control.
  3. Before installing, read the extension’s requested permissions. Treat access to browsing history, page content or all websites as a significant privacy decision.
  4. Install only an extension you trust, then test the sites you use for sign-in, video, shopping and downloads.

Microsoft’s installation and removal instructions are at Add, turn off, or remove extensions in Microsoft Edge. Its extension FAQ explains that site access can be limited to selected sites or to user activation; choose the narrowest option that provides the filtering you need, rather than granting access on every site.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Understand extension permissions and scope

An extension that can read or change data on all websites has a wider privacy impact than one limited to selected sites. If Edge offers choices such as access on all sites, on selected sites or only when you activate the extension, select the least extensive option that still filters the pages you care about. Revisit the permission after installing: an extension update can request additional access.

Use one reputable extension at a time while troubleshooting. Multiple content filters can apply conflicting rules, make pages harder to diagnose and produce duplicate controls. Keep the extension updated through Edge’s normal update mechanism, and remove it if you no longer use it.

Use a site-specific extension setting when available

Many extensions expose a toolbar control that disables filtering for the current domain. If a site breaks, use that control first instead of uninstalling the extension or weakening Edge’s global privacy settings. If the extension offers no per-site control, turn it off temporarily, reload the page and test again.

After disabling an extension for a site, refresh the page and repeat the failed action. If the feature works, keep the exception limited to that domain and document why it exists. If it does not, restore the extension and continue with the tracking-prevention or pop-up tests instead of leaving protection disabled unnecessarily.

A low-breakage troubleshooting sequence

Change one variable at a time so you know which protection caused the failure.

  1. Record the symptom. Note whether sign-in, video playback, checkout, downloads, a menu or a required pop-up stopped working, and identify the setting or extension changed immediately beforehand.
  2. Test tracking prevention. If the failure followed a Strict setting or another tracking-prevention change, keep the global level at Balanced. For a trusted site that still fails, add a site exception and reload. Remember that the exception permits all trackers on that site.
  3. Test extensions. If the failure followed an extension installation or filter-list update, disable that extension for the site or temporarily turn it off. Microsoft recommends re-enabling extensions one at a time when isolating a conflict.
  4. Test a legitimate pop-up. If the broken action should open a separate window, allow pop-ups for that specific trusted site. Keep the global blocker enabled.
  5. Classify remaining ads correctly. If an embedded banner or video advert remains, the pop-up blocker is not the appropriate tool. Use an ad-blocking extension, then apply a per-site exception if the site’s essential feature conflicts with it.

What not to change first

Do not globally block third-party cookies as the first compatibility-preserving fix. Cross-site cookie restrictions can disrupt authentication, embedded services and payment flows. A broad cookie change also makes it harder to identify the real cause of a failure. Start with Balanced and a narrowly scoped extension or site permission change; consider temporary site-data access only when the site explicitly requires it.

When temporary site-data access is the only workable fix

Some cross-site functions need cookies or other site data even after you have selected a compatible tracking level. Microsoft documents a temporary allowance for site data. The allowance can permit cross-site tracking and expires after 30 days, according to Microsoft’s support guidance. Use it only for a site and function you understand, and remove it sooner if it is no longer needed.

Do not begin by globally blocking third-party cookies and then undoing the damage site by site. Cross-site cookie restrictions can disrupt authentication, embedded services and payment flows; a targeted, temporary allowance is less disruptive when a site explicitly requires it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When the temporary period ends, the site may ask again. Treat that prompt as a decision point: allow it only if the service is trusted and the feature is necessary, and remember that the allowance can enable cross-site tracking while it is active.

Choose the least disruptive combination

Your goal Recommended setting Avoid as a first step
Reduce tracking while keeping sites usable Balanced tracking prevention Strict globally
Repair one trusted site affected by tracking prevention One-site tracking-prevention exception Disabling tracking prevention everywhere
Stop windows opening by themselves Pop-ups and redirects: Blocked (recommended) Turning the blocker off globally
Stop alert-like messages Block that site’s notification permission Expecting pop-up settings to control notifications
Hide ads placed inside page content Trusted ad-blocking extension with limited site access Assuming Edge’s built-in pop-up blocker removes them
Reduce ad personalisation Disable browsing-activity personalisation; consider GPC where available Expecting a privacy signal to produce ad-free pages

Keep the setup maintainable

  • Review the tracking-prevention exception list periodically and delete entries for sites you no longer use.
  • Keep a short note of which site needs a pop-up or extension allowance, so you can revoke it after a one-time task.
  • When a site changes, retest with Balanced and your normal extension set before adding new permissions.
  • Update Edge and extensions through their normal update mechanisms, then recheck critical workflows after major changes.
  • Prefer one narrowly scoped exception over a browser-wide privacy downgrade.
  • Check extension permissions after major updates and remove extensions that are no longer necessary.
  • Use the site-information icon to inspect blocked trackers before assuming a privacy setting is responsible for a failure.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Microsoft Edge block ads by itself?

Edge blocks trackers according to Tracking prevention and automatically opened windows through its pop-up blocker, but Microsoft says the pop-up blocker cannot block advertisements embedded in webpages. Page-ad filtering generally requires an extension.

Why did a website stop working after I enabled Strict tracking prevention?

Strict blocks most trackers across sites, and Microsoft warns that some sites may not behave as expected. Return to Balanced, reload the page, and add an exception only for a trusted site that still fails.

Can I allow ads or trackers on only one site?

You can add a site to Tracking prevention exceptions, but that allows all trackers on that site, including potentially harmful ones. For an ad-blocking extension, use its per-site disable or allow control when available.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will InPrivate browsing remove advertisements?

No. InPrivate does not add ad blocking; it mainly changes what Edge retains locally for the session. Use the appropriate tracking, pop-up, notification or extension control for the result you want.

Why am I still seeing banners after enabling the pop-up blocker?

The pop-up blocker handles automatically opened windows and redirects, not advertisements embedded in a webpage. Use a trusted ad-blocking extension for page content, and allow it only the site access it needs.

How do I stop ads appearing as Windows notifications?

Open Edge’s Cookies and site permissions or Site permissions, choose Notifications, and block or remove permission for the offending site. Notification permissions are separate from pop-ups and do not filter ordinary page banners.

Is a tracking-prevention exception safe?

It restores compatibility by turning tracking prevention off for that site, but it allows all of the site’s trackers, including potentially harmful ones. Use exceptions only for trusted domains and remove them when no longer needed.

Should I disable third-party cookies everywhere to stop personalised ads?

No. Broad cookie restrictions can disrupt authentication, embedded services and payments. Start with Balanced tracking prevention and targeted controls. If a trusted site needs temporary site data, Microsoft says that allowance can expire after 30 days and may permit cross-site tracking while active.

How can I tell whether an extension caused the problem?

Turn the extension off for the affected site, reload and repeat the failed action. If it works, use the extension’s per-site exception if available. When isolating conflicts, re-enable extensions one at a time.

The Bottom Line

For the fewest broken pages, keep Edge on Balanced, leave pop-ups blocked, remove unwanted notification permissions, and use a trusted ad-blocking extension only for embedded page ads. Repair failures with a single-site exception or allowance, not a global privacy downgrade.
