What degree do you need to become a NASA astronaut?
The usual academic route is a completed master’s degree in one of NASA’s listed STEM fields from an accredited institution. The field matters because astronaut work combines engineering, science, spacecraft operations and medical or biological decision-making. A degree that does not fall within the listed disciplines should not be assumed to satisfy the education requirement.
Standard master’s-degree route
Qualifying disciplines include engineering, biological science, physical science, computer science and mathematics. The degree must be completed at an accredited institution. Because the experience requirement is measured after degree completion, plan your education and career timeline together rather than treating graduate school as an unrelated credential.
Accepted alternatives
NASA recognizes several alternatives to the standard master’s degree:
- Two years of related doctoral study.
- A completed Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO).
- Completion of a nationally recognized test-pilot-school program.
These are alternatives to the master’s credential, not shortcuts around experience, medical screening or the rest of the selection process. Applicants should verify the wording in the next vacancy announcement because NASA can update eligibility language between cycles.
How much experience is required?
Most applicants use the professional-experience route: at least three years of related professional experience obtained after completing the qualifying degree. “Related” should be read broadly enough to include high-level technical, scientific, medical, engineering and operational work, but the application must show what you were responsible for and what you accomplished.
Professional-experience route
Strong evidence includes progressively difficult assignments, measurable technical or scientific results, responsibility for safety or mission-critical operations, and work performed with other specialists. The number of years is only the threshold. NASA’s selection factors require you to explain how you led, communicated, solved problems and contributed to a team.

Pilot route
Pilots may qualify with 1,000 pilot-in-command hours, of which at least 850 must be in high-performance jet aircraft. The hour thresholds are specific: general flight time cannot simply be substituted for the high-performance-jet portion. You still need the required education or accepted equivalent, medical qualification and evidence of leadership, teamwork and communication.
Is military or pilot experience mandatory?
No. NASA’s frequently asked questions state that flying experience is not required when an applicant qualifies through the professional-experience route, and military service is not mandatory. A civilian engineer, scientist, physician or other qualified professional can apply without military credentials if the formal requirements are met.
Professional and pilot routes compared
Both routes lead to the same astronaut selection process. The difference is how you establish the experience requirement and what evidence you bring to the reviewers.
| Comparison point | Professional-experience route | Pilot route |
|---|---|---|
| Education equivalency | Qualifying STEM master’s degree or an accepted equivalent such as two years of related doctoral study, MD/DO or a nationally recognized test-pilot-school program. | The same education requirement or accepted equivalent. |
| Experience threshold | At least three years of related professional experience after degree completion. | 1,000 pilot-in-command hours. |
| Specific flight threshold | None; flying is not required for this route. | At least 850 of the 1,000 pilot-in-command hours must be in high-performance jet aircraft. |
| Transferable skills | Technical judgment, research, engineering, medicine, operations, risk management and collaboration can demonstrate mission readiness. | Flight-test discipline, aircraft systems knowledge, decision-making under pressure and crew coordination can demonstrate mission readiness. |
| Medical qualification | Must pass NASA’s long-duration flight astronaut physical; NASA says waivers are not granted. | Must pass the same physical; pilot status does not replace NASA’s medical standard. |
| Leadership, teamwork and communication | Must be shown through projects, teams, operations, research or service. | Must be shown through flight operations and other responsible work, not inferred solely from flight hours. |
How NASA selects astronaut candidates
NASA’s published timeline for the latest cycle shows a staged review. The agency can extend or accelerate timing depending on the number of applications, so the sequence is more reliable than any fixed calendar.
- Vacancy announcement: NASA posts the federal job announcement with the current eligibility language and an application deadline.
- Qualification review: NASA checks citizenship, education or equivalency, experience and other stated requirements.
- Highly qualified review: Reviewers examine qualified applications to identify candidates whose background best matches the astronaut role.
- Initial interviews and activities: Selected applicants travel to Johnson Space Center for interviews and assessment activities.
- Finalist determination: NASA narrows the group after the initial evaluations.
- Final interviews and activities: Finalists complete additional interviews and activities at Johnson.
- Class announcement: NASA announces the selected astronaut candidates.
- Reporting and training: New candidates report to Johnson Space Center and begin the candidate program.
The scale is substantial. NASA says more than 8,000 people applied in the 2024 cycle and 10 were selected for the 2025 astronaut-candidate class. Those figures describe that cycle, not a permanent acceptance rate or quota for future announcements.

What happens during medical screening?
The long-duration flight astronaut physical is a formal gate, and NASA states that it does not grant waivers for medical requirements. That means applicants should understand the standard early, rather than waiting until an application is nearly complete.

- [Dont Hesite to Order] 24 hours customer services and professional technology team are standing by
NASA’s 2025 selection newsletter describes the depth of one screening stage. Its medical team evaluated 120 initial applicants using medical histories, physical examinations, laboratory testing, eye and hearing examinations, bone-density scans and additional testing; 40 candidates advanced to the second round. This is an example of the breadth of evaluation in that cycle, not a guaranteed number of examinees or finalists in every future cycle.
- Review your medical history and any relevant records before applying.
- Maintain general physical readiness and address preventable health issues with qualified clinicians.
- Do not assume that a successful military, commercial or civilian aviation examination is identical to NASA’s long-duration standard.
- Read the medical language in the next vacancy announcement because standards and instructions can be revised.
How long is NASA astronaut training?
After selection, astronaut candidates report to Johnson Space Center and complete nearly two years of training before becoming eligible for flight assignments. NASA describes preparation for missions in low Earth orbit, to the Moon and ultimately to Mars. The program is deliberately broad: candidates are trained to operate systems, work safely outside a spacecraft, support science and respond as a crew when conditions are uncertain.
Spacecraft systems and operations
Candidates learn spacecraft systems, procedures and operations so they can monitor vehicles, manage failures and execute mission plans. This work connects classroom instruction with simulations and team exercises.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesSpacewalk practice
Neutral Buoyancy Laboratory sessions provide underwater practice for spacewalk tasks. The environment allows candidates to rehearse tools, body positioning, procedures and communication while working in a suit-like configuration.
T-38 jet flight
T-38 jet training develops disciplined procedures, situational awareness, cockpit communication and rapid decision-making. Pilot experience is not required for application, but selected candidates still receive the flight training assigned by the candidate program.
Robotics and robotic-arm operations
Robotics instruction covers operation of robotic systems and robotic arms used to move equipment, support spacewalks and handle payloads. Candidates must coordinate precise actions with the rest of the crew and mission controllers.

Geology for lunar missions
NASA includes geology training to prepare candidates for lunar exploration. The subject supports observation, sample decisions and communication between field activity and mission objectives.
Survival training
Survival instruction prepares candidates to protect themselves and work as a crew when a landing or other contingency places them away from normal support. It is one part of a larger emphasis on calm, procedural response.
Space health
Space-health training addresses radiation exposure, the effects of microgravity, nutrition and the use of International Space Station exercise equipment. Candidates learn how health decisions affect individual performance and crew safety over long missions.
Language and crew skills
Language training and additional crew-skills instruction are assigned as required by the candidate program. NASA’s reports emphasize that these subjects are integrated with the rest of training rather than treated as isolated hobbies.
NASA candidate Ben Bailey described the combination as “flying, language training, spacewalks” experienced together as a crew. Candidate Adam Fuhrmann likewise emphasized that complex missions depend on engineers and professionals working together. The practical lesson is that astronaut training rewards reliable crew behavior as much as individual technical ability.

How to prepare before the next application window
Preparation is a multi-year project. The most useful plan is to build eligibility, evidence and readiness in parallel.
Best Value
- Choose a qualifying academic path. Select an accredited STEM program that can lead to a master’s degree in engineering, biological science, physical science, computer science or mathematics, or pursue one of NASA’s accepted equivalents. Confirm accreditation and the exact credential before enrolling.
- Build post-degree experience. Accumulate at least three years of relevant professional work after the qualifying degree, or pursue the pilot route and document the required pilot-in-command and high-performance-jet hours. Seek assignments with increasing responsibility rather than collecting years without substantive outcomes.
- Keep an evidence record. Maintain a concise record of projects, technical results, safety decisions, leadership responsibilities, team roles, presentations and lessons learned. Quantify outcomes when possible and identify your personal contribution.
- Practice communication in technical settings. Astronaut work requires clear briefings, listening, concise written procedures and the ability to raise a problem early. Build this evidence through operations reviews, research presentations, incident analysis, mentoring or service.
- Develop crew-oriented leadership. NASA looks for leadership and teamwork, not only individual achievement. Lead projects where success depends on coordinating people with different expertise, resolving disagreement and delivering under constraints.
- Review medical standards early. Read NASA’s current long-duration flight medical requirements when the next announcement is published. Because NASA says waivers are not granted, identify questions with an appropriate medical professional well before an application deadline.
- Prepare for assessment activities. Expect interviews, exercises and medical screening if advanced. Rehearse examples that show judgment, safety awareness, adaptability, communication and learning from mistakes without exaggerating your role.
- Monitor official announcements. Follow NASA’s Astronaut Selection Program and USAJOBS. Application periods are episodic; there is no continuously open astronaut application.
When is NASA accepting applications?
NASA is not collecting astronaut applications at the time covered by the latest announcement. The previous vacancy announcement closed April 16, 2024. NASA announced the 10-member 2025 candidate class on September 22, 2025, and says applicants should monitor the Astronaut Selection Program and USAJOBS for the next vacancy announcement.
Do not treat the end of one cycle as a permanent cancellation. NASA’s process begins again only when a new federal vacancy announcement is posted, and that announcement controls the deadline, eligibility wording and submission instructions.
Common misconceptions that can derail an application
You must be a military pilot
False. Military service and flying are not mandatory when you meet the professional-experience route. Pilot credentials are one way to satisfy the experience requirement, not a universal prerequisite.
A bachelor’s degree is enough
Not under the standard requirement described by NASA. The normal academic threshold is a qualifying master’s degree, with the listed doctoral-study, MD/DO and test-pilot-school alternatives.
Meeting the minimum years guarantees an interview
No. Three years of experience or the pilot-hour threshold establishes eligibility. NASA then compares qualified applicants, conducts interviews and activities, and selects finalists through multiple stages.
Generic fitness or space hobbies satisfy selection criteria
NASA’s formal requirements do not name consumer products, games, merchandise or recreational activities as prerequisites. Fitness supports readiness, but selection evidence must include the required education, experience, medical qualification and demonstrated leadership, teamwork and communication.
A realistic path from student to candidate
A typical sequence looks like this:
- Education: Complete a qualifying STEM master’s degree or an accepted equivalent.
- Professional development: Spend at least three years after the degree building technical, scientific, medical or operational responsibility, or complete the pilot-route thresholds.
- Leadership and crew evidence: Take on work where outcomes depend on communication, coordination and sound judgment.
- Readiness: Maintain physical and professional readiness while reviewing the current medical standard.
- Application: Apply only when NASA posts a new vacancy announcement, following its exact federal instructions.
- Assessment: If advanced, complete interviews, activities and extensive medical evaluation.
- Candidate training: Report to Johnson Space Center for nearly two years of broad astronaut preparation before becoming eligible for flight assignment.
The central decision is not whether to become a pilot or an engineer. It is whether you can build a record that satisfies the formal gates and proves you can learn, communicate, lead and operate safely as part of a crew.
