To beat Sphinx, Devourer of the Unworthy, reach the Ancient Lair Lantern after the Salt Mines mine-cart ride, restock, and enter through the golden-sand barrier. In phase one, parry its blockable claw strings until its posture breaks, land the critical attack, and apply Fire Transmutation between openings. When the mask breaks and phase two begins, shoot the exposed red face with the Blunderbuss, sidestep the insect swarm and mouth beam, and punish the boss only after each ranged attack passes.
The encounter has 2,000 health, a 350-point posture pool and a fixed 300-damage critical attack, according to AllThingsHow Staff’s 2026 guide. Victory awards 20,000 Catalysts; returning to James also reportedly gives the Outward Pass key and the “Not a Cat Person” achievement.

Find the arena and prepare first
Sphinx is the third major boss in Valor Mortis. The fight occurs in Chapter IV’s Dark Descent, in the Caverns reached after William’s cart ride through the Salt Mines. You need James’s Cave Grotto Key to open the Caverns route.
- Complete the Salt Mines mine-cart section.
- Follow the Caverns route into Dark Descent.
- Rest at the Ancient Lair Lantern beside the golden-sand barrier.
- Restock before crossing the barrier and entering the arena.
A published equipment recommendation is level 20 or higher with a Saber, Dominatus II and Volatile End ambers, hand grenades, oil grenades, special rounds and at least five Ferrofluid Flasks. These are suggested tools, not stated entry requirements.

Understand Sphinx’s two forms
The first health bar belongs to the masked form. It favors rapid claw combinations, tail attacks and ranged energy hazards. Once that bar is depleted, the golden mask breaks and a second health bar appears. The face becomes a red glowing weak point, while ranged threats become more dangerous, especially the insect swarm and mouth beam.
Keep Sphinx in view and stay close enough to read its animations. Red flashes mark unblockable attacks. Blocking those attacks wastes stamina and can leave you in the damage zone; dodge instead.

Phase one: build posture, then take the critical
Parry the three-hit claw string
The most valuable opening is the three-part claw sequence. Watch the hands and parry each blockable hit rather than attacking through it. With the Rapier, each perfect parry inflicts 150 posture damage; three clean parries can fill the reported 350-point posture pool, although the exact timing of the break depends on other damage and whether every parry registers perfectly.
When the posture bar breaks, move immediately to Sphinx’s head and perform the critical attack. The published figure for this critical is 300 fixed damage. Do not spend the opening on ordinary swings if the critical prompt is available.

Maintain burn without getting greedy
Use Fire Transmutation during the space between claw strings or while circling back into position. Burn adds pressure without requiring you to remain in front of the boss. Stasis Transmutation is a defensible alternative when you value a controlled freeze or a safer burst window over damage over time.
Recognize and avoid phase-one hazards
- Leap: Dodge away from the landing rather than trying to interrupt it.
- Breath attack: Sidestep out of the line immediately. It builds a lethal status bar, so do not stand in front of Sphinx while waiting for it to end.
- Purple pillars: Move through the gaps as the formation appears; do not remain in a narrowing corridor.
- Exploding orb: Jump over the ground wave, then reposition before returning to melee.
- Tail attacks: Stay alert when circling behind the boss and avoid assuming the rear is permanently safe.
Phase two: target the exposed face
Exploit the red weak point
When the mask shatters, the face glows red. Close in with the Blunderbuss and fire directly into that exposed area for burst damage. Keep Fire Transmutation active if you can apply it without standing in a telegraphed attack. If Sphinx creates distance, switch to a pistol or another ranged weapon loaded with special rounds instead of chasing through hazards.

Dodge the swarm and mouth beam
The insect swarm and mouth beam are dodge-only threats in the boss guide: do not try to block either one. Move laterally out of the attack’s line, wait for it to pass, then close the distance again. Sideways movement is safer than retreating straight back, which can leave you against the arena boundary or inside a follow-up hazard.

Keep bombs for a late-fight moment when Sphinx is stationary or recovering. Throwing them during the swarm, beam or another moving pattern commonly trades your damage attempt for an avoidable hit. Use special rounds when distance prevents a safe Blunderbuss shot, and spend Ferrofluid Flasks early enough to avoid entering the final exchange with an empty recovery supply.
A repeatable kill sequence
- Rest at the Ancient Lair Lantern and refill health, ammunition and consumables.
- Cross the golden-sand barrier and lock your camera so Sphinx stays visible.
- Stay near the boss, wait for the three-part claw string and parry the blockable hits.
- When posture breaks, perform the head critical for the reported 300 fixed damage.
- Apply Fire Transmutation during safe repositioning and dodge every red-flash attack.
- Repeat until the first health bar is empty and the golden mask breaks.
- In phase two, fire the Blunderbuss into the red face, then use special-round shots when Sphinx backs away.
- Sidestep the insect swarm and mouth beam; return to melee only after each attack ends.
- Use a bomb during a stationary late-fight opening and finish the second health bar without forcing trades.
Rewards for defeating Sphinx
The documented boss payout is 20,000 Catalysts. Method also reports that returning to James after the victory grants the Outward Pass key and the “Not a Cat Person” achievement. If one of those rewards does not appear immediately, leave the arena, speak with James again and verify that the boss victory registered before advancing.
