Choose your difficulty before you start, because SHINOBI: Art of Vengeance does not let you change it during a playthrough. Novice is the safest starting point for newcomers, Apprentice suits players who know 2D action games, Shinobi delivers the intended challenge, and Custom lets you soften one rule without changing everything else. Hardcore is a separate replay option added in the April 3, 2026 update and is available only when you begin a new game.
For every boss, the reliable approach is to read the tell first, preserve a movement option, punish with the sword when close range is safe, use kunai when distance is safer, and spend Ninpo deliberately. Build tags for Shinobi Execution instead of treating it as button-mashing. The SEGA Villains Stage adds five crossover stages and three named bosses—Goro Majima, Dr. Eggman, and Death Adder—after you complete the fourth base-game zone.

What to decide before starting
The opening mode selection is a campaign setting, not a temporary assist. The SEGA manual states that difficulty cannot be changed after a playthrough begins. If you are unsure, spend a few minutes deciding which kind of mistakes you want the game to forgive: taking damage, missing a dodge, facing frequent attacks, or losing a run after a game-over condition.
Difficulty recommendations by player
- New to 2D action games: Novice. This is the most forgiving named preset based on its adjustable combat and recovery variables. The game does not publish a numeric ranking for every preset, so this is practical guidance rather than an official statistical comparison.
- Comfortable with platform fighters: Apprentice. It is a sensible first run when you already understand spacing, jump timing, and committing to a punish window.
- Experienced Shinobi or action-platformer player: Shinobi. Pick this when you want the intended challenge and are prepared to learn patterns rather than trade damage.
- You want to soften one specific problem: Custom. Keep the parts you enjoy and alter a targeted rule such as enemy damage, enemy attack rate, game-over rules, environmental damage, or combo-amulet thresholds.
- Replay challenge: Hardcore. Select it only for a new game. The April 3, 2026 update changes enemy damage, healing, enemy placement, and boss attack patterns, so it is not simply a higher health or damage slider.
Do not choose Hardcore expecting a familiar run with tougher numbers. New placements and new boss patterns require a fresh read of each arena.

How the four base modes differ
The manual names four base choices: Shinobi, Apprentice, Novice, and Custom. It identifies the variables that Custom can expose, but it does not publish a complete numeric stat sheet for each preset. The table therefore separates confirmed controls from values that are not stated.
| Mode | Best fit | What is established | What is not published |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shinobi | Experienced action-platformer players | Named standard difficulty intended for the full challenge | Exact enemy damage, health, attack-rate and threshold numbers |
| Apprentice | Players familiar with 2D combat | Named standard difficulty for a balanced first attempt | Exact numerical modifiers compared with Shinobi or Novice |
| Novice | Newcomers and players prioritizing learning | Most forgiving named preset in practical play guidance | Exact numerical modifiers and healing percentages |
| Custom | Players who need one rule adjusted | Enemy damage, enemy health, enemy attack rate, game-over rules, environmental damage and combo-amulet thresholds are adjustable | The manual does not establish every available value or combination |
| Hardcore | Replay-focused experts | Added April 3, 2026; changes enemy damage, healing, enemy placement and boss attack patterns; new game only | A complete numerical modifier list |
Why Custom is often better than dropping the whole mode
Suppose you can read a boss but lose health to environmental hazards. Custom lets you address environmental damage without necessarily changing enemy health or attack frequency. If your problem is being clipped before a dodge starts, lower enemy attack rate or damage instead. If you understand combat but dislike a particular game-over rule, adjust that rule while leaving enemy behavior intact. The manual explicitly lists these controls; it does not promise that every setting can be changed later, so configure them before launching the run.
The boss toolkit you should practice first
Bosses test five linked systems: sword, kunai, Ninpo, movement, and Shinobi Execution. Treat them as answers to different situations instead of one universal combo.
Sword: close-range punishment
Use the sword when a boss has completed an attack and is safely within reach. The objective is not to stand beside the boss indefinitely; it is to convert a short recovery animation into controlled damage, then leave before the next pattern begins. If you are still attacking when the boss has recovered, you have turned a punish window into a trade.

Kunai: damage while distance is safer
Kunai gives you a way to interact without walking into a contact hit. Use it while repositioning, during a pattern that leaves the boss exposed at range, or when the arena makes a close approach risky. Do not assume ranged attacks are automatically free: keep watching the boss and reserve a movement option in case the next tell begins immediately.
Ninpo: a deliberate answer, not background damage
Official materials confirm Ninpo as part of Musashi’s core combat kit, but they do not provide a universal boss combo or a single best spell for every encounter. Spend Ninpo when it solves a dangerous pattern, creates a clear damage window, or prevents a likely mistake. Saving every use can be as harmful as wasting it; the right timing depends on the arena and the pattern you are learning.
Movement: preserve an exit
Joe’s dodge, dash, jumps and other movement tools are central to surviving contact. Enter a punish with at least one escape option available. Avoid burning every jump, dash or dodge for a low-value hit, because bosses often chain a second attack after the first apparent opening. Positioning at the edge of an arena can also remove your escape route, so move early enough to keep space on both sides.
Shinobi Execution: build tags before cashing them in
The game’s reference description explains that enemies can be staggered and tagged, allowing Musashi to execute all tagged weakened enemies at once. In a boss arena, treat tagging as preparation: create a safe setup, identify which targets are actually eligible, and trigger the execution only when the animation will not leave you exposed. Do not assume every boss phase or boss target accepts the same execution interaction; use the prompt and the encounter’s rules as the authority.

A repeatable method for learning any boss
- Spend the first attempt reading. Watch the animation, sound cue and arena position before committing to damage. Note whether the tell begins from the boss’s body, a projectile, a floor hazard or a change in distance.
- Choose one response for each tell. Decide in advance whether you will jump, dodge, dash, move behind the boss, throw kunai or wait. A small response menu is easier to execute than improvising every time.
- Keep one movement option unused. Do not spend every defensive tool to reach a minor hit. Preserve an escape for the follow-up attack you have not seen yet.
- Punish briefly. Use the sword during a close recovery window or kunai when range is safer. Stop attacking before the boss resumes control.
- Use Ninpo on a purpose. Select it for a dangerous pattern, a high-confidence opening or a mistake-prevention moment, rather than pressing it whenever it is available.
- Build and spend tags deliberately. Stagger and tag eligible weakened enemies, then use Shinobi Execution during a safe, high-value window when the encounter allows it.
- Repeat one phase at a time. Autosave occurs at checkpoints and when returning to the world map, according to the manual. Use that structure to practice the phase that is actually ending your attempts instead of replaying the entire fight mentally as one problem.
- Relearn the fight on Hardcore. The update adds new boss attack patterns. A response that worked on a standard mode may fail because the tell, timing or follow-up has changed.
How to troubleshoot a losing streak
You are losing health before you can attack
Stop trying to start every exchange at close range. Observe the opening pattern, use movement to reach a safer angle, and throw kunai while you learn the timing. If enemy contact damage is the specific barrier, a Custom setup that reduces enemy damage can preserve the rest of your preferred challenge.
You dodge the first move but get hit by the second
That usually means the first dodge was treated as the end of the sequence. Keep an exit available after the initial evasion and watch the boss’s recovery animation. Delay your punish until the follow-up has either fired or clearly ended.
You run out of resources during the final portion
Do not spend Ninpo and execution opportunities automatically at the start. Use sword or kunai to establish the rhythm, reserve Ninpo for a dangerous pattern or reliable opening, and trigger a prepared execution when it removes a meaningful threat. Hardcore also changes healing, so resource assumptions from another mode may not transfer.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThe arena itself is causing the deaths
Environmental damage is one of the Custom variables listed by the manual. First, identify whether the hazard is fixed, timed or activated by movement. Then change your route so you are not cornered by the hazard. If that still prevents learning the fight, reduce environmental damage in Custom rather than altering every enemy variable.

You started on the wrong difficulty
The campaign mode cannot be changed mid-playthrough. Your choices are to continue and use the run as practice, restart on a more suitable base preset, or begin a new Custom game. Hardcore must also be selected at the start of a new game.

The SEGA Villains Stage is post-progress content rather than an opening-game boss list. The official SEGA product page says it unlocks after completion of the fourth base-game zone. That zone includes The Desert, Mad Train and ENE Corp Laboratory. Finish the required base progression before looking for the crossover stages.
What the DLC contains
| Content | Confirmed scope |
|---|---|
| Crossover stages | Five |
| Bosses | Goro Majima, Dr. Eggman and Death Adder |
| Additional Ninpo | Three |

| Boss Rush | Two modes |

How to approach the three crossover bosses
SEGA’s official product information confirms the names and the DLC scope, but it does not publish phase-by-phase attack lists, damage values or a verified difficulty ranking for Goro Majima, Dr. Eggman and Death Adder. Apply the transferable method rather than memorizing an unverified script: read each boss’s animation and audio cue, identify whether the safe response is movement, distance or a brief close punish, and test Ninpo only after you understand the pattern.

Boss Rush deserves a different mindset from a first clear. Because it places multiple encounters in a repeated sequence, protect resources during familiar openings and avoid trading health for speed. Use the first attempts to learn where each boss’s attack pattern changes in the rush context; a response that is safe in isolation may be expensive when the next fight starts without a full reset.

What is and is not known about the base-game boss roster
SEGA’s authoritative product information does not provide a complete, phase-by-phase list of base-game bosses. It would be misleading to invent names, attacks, damage values or a “hardest boss” ranking. The practical consequence is that you should evaluate each encounter by its tells, arena geometry, recovery windows and available movement rather than rely on an unverified tier list.
The same caution applies to exact difficulty statistics. The manual identifies the Custom controls and confirms that the opening mode is locked for the run, but it does not publish a full numeric comparison of Shinobi, Apprentice and Novice. Choose by the learning goal described above, then use the in-game behavior you actually observe to refine your approach.
Platforms and release context
SHINOBI: Art of Vengeance launched on August 29, 2025 for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series, Nintendo Switch and Steam. A launch announcement from SEGA reported a Metascore of 90 as of that date. Platform controls can change the feel of repeated dodge-and-punish practice, so use the controller or input method with which you can consistently perform your movement responses; no single controller is required by the documented boss systems.

- Select Novice, Apprentice, Shinobi or Custom before starting; remember that the choice is locked for the playthrough.
- If using Custom, change only the variable that blocks learning when possible: enemy damage, enemy health, enemy attack rate, game-over rules, environmental damage or combo-amulet thresholds.
- Practice movement before chasing damage. A preserved dodge, dash or jump is more valuable than one extra sword swing.
- Use sword for short close punish windows and kunai when distance is safer.
- Spend Ninpo with a defined purpose and build tags for Shinobi Execution instead of firing every resource immediately.
- Use checkpoint and world-map autosaves to isolate the phase that is defeating you.
- Expect Hardcore to require a new pattern read because it changes enemy placement and boss attacks as well as damage and healing.
- Complete the fourth base-game zone to unlock the five-stage SEGA Villains Stage and its three named bosses.
- Enter Boss Rush only after you can clear individual encounters without relying on repeated trades.
The Bottom Line
For most first-time players, Novice or Apprentice is the right opening choice; use Custom when one specific rule is the problem. Learn bosses by reading tells, preserving movement, punishing briefly with sword or kunai, and spending Ninpo and Shinobi Execution deliberately. Start a new game for Hardcore, and finish the fourth base-game zone to access the five-stage SEGA Villains Stage with Goro Majima, Dr. Eggman and Death Adder.
