In Halide, balance exposure by choosing shutter speed for motion and ISO for the light-versus-noise trade-off. Halide’s product page lists shutter speed, ISO and white balance as manual controls, but does not list an in-app aperture adjustment. The available controls therefore do not provide the full three-setting exposure triangle implied by the title.
What do shutter speed and ISO control?
Shutter speed determines how long the camera collects light. Halide’s official Fully Manual guide says, “Shutter speed is the number that will determine how much light your iPhone camera collects.” A longer exposure gathers more light, but movement by the subject or phone can make a sharp image harder to capture. A faster shutter is useful when you want to freeze a moving subject.

ISO affects the camera’s sensitivity for the exposure. Lower ISO means the scene needs more light, but produces less noise; raising ISO can help when light is limited, at the cost of more visible noise. Halide’s guide explains: “The lower, the more light your camera will need to take a photo — but you will also see less noise.”

Start with what matters most in the image, then adjust the other setting to make the exposure work. These are qualitative trade-offs, not universal numeric recipes: the cited Halide sources do not give recommended settings for particular scenes.

For a moving subject
Favor a faster shutter so movement is rendered more sharply. If the image is too dark, raise ISO only as much as needed, accepting some additional noise. This prioritizes a usable shutter speed over the cleanest possible image.
For a still scene
A longer shutter can collect more light, which may let you keep ISO lower. Keep the phone steady, and consider whether movement in the scene—such as blur from moving elements—is part of the intended image or a problem.

When minimizing noise matters
Keep ISO lower when the available light and shutter time allow it. If lowering ISO makes the image too dark, you can use a longer exposure for a still scene, or accept higher ISO when a faster shutter is essential.

Halide’s Fully Manual support article documents entering manual mode by swiping from the right edge of the viewfinder, then using vertical swipes for shutter speed and horizontal swipes for ISO. That article was updated October 31, 2020; gestures and interface details may differ in the version you have installed, so treat this as documented guidance rather than a guarantee about the current interface.

Can I change aperture in Halide?
The cited Halide product page describes automatic and manual modes and names shutter speed, ISO and white balance as manual controls. It does not list aperture adjustment. The reviewed Halide sources therefore do not establish an in-app aperture control. They also do not establish aperture values for every iPhone model or lens, so a specific hardware value should be checked against the exact device and camera rather than assumed.

- Subject motion: decide whether a faster shutter is needed to render movement acceptably.
- Available light: assess whether the scene can support a low ISO at the shutter time you want.
- Noise tolerance: weigh the extra noise from raising ISO against the benefit of preserving a faster shutter or brighter exposure.
- Steadiness: consider whether you and the subject can remain still during a longer exposure. A phone support may help keep the device steady, but it is an optional accessory, not a Halide requirement or a guarantee of sharpness.
Halide’s Fully Manual article was updated in 2020, and the product page cited here does not identify a product-version number. Check the controls in your installed app if its interface differs from the documented gestures.
