Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You can backdate a WordPress post by changing its date in the post editor’s Publish panel, or by using Quick Edit from the Posts list. In the Classic Editor, set the date and time to the past, confirm the change, then click Publish to apply it.

Backdate a post in the Classic Editor

  1. In your WordPress dashboard, open Posts and select the post you want to edit.

  2. In the Publish panel, click Edit beside Publish immediately.

  3. Enter the past date and time you want, using the intended local time for your site, then confirm the date controls.

  4. Click Publish to apply the date. WordPress’s Classic Editor guide explicitly describes setting a past publish date to backdate a post.

Change the date on an already published post

You can change an existing post’s date from Posts using Quick Edit, without opening the full post editor. WordPress documents this capability in its Posts screen documentation. For a fully documented sequence of individual controls, use the Classic Editor steps above.

Check which date WordPress is using

Why the site timezone matters

WordPress distinguishes the post’s date, which uses the site’s timezone, from date_gmt, which uses GMT. Both fields are documented for creating and updating posts in the REST API post reference. When editing in the dashboard, choose the intended local date and time; do not assume a universal offset between the displayed time and GMT.

What changing the date does not establish

The WordPress documentation cited here explains how to change a post date and how certain screens or blocks display it. It does not establish a particular effect on search rankings, a guaranteed permalink change, or that the edit history will be hidden. Check your own site wherever the public date or URL matters rather than assuming those outcomes.
