How to Back Up Your Files Before Downgrading Windows

Create and verify an independent copy of your files before you downgrade Windows. Use OneDrive through Windows Backup, an external drive, or File History, then open representative files from the backup. Do not rely on Windows.old or the built-in Go back feature as your only backup: Microsoft says rollback data is temporary, may be removed by some installation methods, and is normally available for only 10 days after an upgrade.

Check your downgrade route first. A recent upgrade may offer Settings > System > Recovery > Go back, while a clean installation or reset can erase the Windows drive. The backup procedure below covers both situations.

Decide which downgrade route you will use

Your backup risk depends on how Windows will be changed. Identify the route before copying anything, because the built-in rollback and a fresh installation do not behave the same way.

Go back to the previous Windows version

Open Settings > System > Recovery and look for Go back. Microsoft describes this as a limited-time return to the previous Windows version. It normally keeps personal files, but removes apps and drivers installed after the upgrade and reverses settings changes made since then.

#1 Best Overall
Seagate 2TB Portable Hard Drive | USB 3.0 (STGX2000400) | Everyday HDD storage. Plug-and-play backup. Windows & macOS. Adobe CC trial included. 1-Year Warranty
  • Easily store and access 2TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive
  • Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
  • To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
  • This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
  • The available storage capacity may vary.

The button can disappear when rollback files have been deleted or another prerequisite is missing. Microsoft lists keeping the Windows.old and $windows.~bt folders among the requirements. Other conditions can include removing user accounts added after the upgrade and having the upgrade USB drive available if one was used. In most cases, Microsoft says Go back is available for 10 days after an upgrade.

Install Windows from installation media

A clean installation can format the Windows partition and erase its contents. Treat it as a data-destruction operation unless you have a separate, verified copy. If you are moving to an older release from a USB installer, assume that every file on the target drive could be lost.

Reset this PC

Reset this PC is not a backup method. Microsoft says a reset does not create a Windows.old folder, so files left only on the system drive may not be recoverable afterward. Read the reset choices carefully and finish your backup before selecting one.

Downgrade route What may happen to files What to do first
Settings > System > Recovery > Go back Personal files are generally kept, but apps, drivers and settings changes made after the upgrade are removed or reverted. Back up anyway; confirm the rollback option and its prerequisites are still present.
Fresh installation from USB or other media The target drive may be formatted and its contents erased. Make an independent copy of every required file and verify it before booting the installer.
Reset this PC Windows is reinstalled or reset according to the selected option; it does not create Windows.old. Back up files and settings externally before starting the reset.

Know what must be included in the backup

Windows Backup can cover selected standard folders, but it does not prove that every location on your computer is included. Write a file inventory before you begin and check each item off after it is copied.

  • Desktop, Documents, Pictures, Videos and Music folders.
  • Downloads, which often contains installers, tax documents, scans and attachments that are not duplicated elsewhere.
  • Work, school or project folders stored directly under C:, on another internal partition, or in a custom folder such as C:Projects.
  • Photos and videos imported to an application-specific folder rather than the standard Pictures location.
  • Files on other internal drives or partitions. A backup of the Windows user folder does not automatically include another drive.
  • Browser bookmarks and any locally stored exports you need. Browser sync may restore some data, but do not assume it covers downloads or saved files.
  • Virtual-machine disks, game saves, local databases, source code, mail archives and application data that you intentionally keep outside the standard folders.
  • Files shared with other Windows user accounts on the same computer.

Also record which applications created important files. A document may be backed up successfully but still require the correct application, plug-in, font or license after the downgrade. The file copy protects the data; it does not guarantee that every program or credential will migrate.

Choose a backup method that matches your collection

Method Best fit Checks before downgrading Limitations
OneDrive through Windows Backup Internet access is available and the selected folders fit in cloud storage. Use the correct personal Microsoft account, select the needed folders, confirm available capacity, wait for synchronization and view the files online. Upload time depends on connection speed; large collections can require more storage and may cost more. The documented Windows Backup flow is for consumer devices, not work or school accounts.
External hard drive, SSD, USB drive or other external storage Internet is unavailable, the collection is large, or you want an offline copy. Use a drive with enough free space, copy the intended folders, open sample files from the drive and keep it disconnected during installation. You must protect the physical drive and verify that the copy is complete.
File History You want versioned copies of personal files on an external drive or network location. Configure the destination and confirm that the folders you need are included. It is a file-versioning system, not a substitute for checking that custom locations and critical files are covered.
Windows.old or Go back Only as a temporary rollback aid after a recent upgrade. Confirm the time window, required folders and other prerequisites. It is not an independent backup. Most temporary contents may be deleted after 10 days, and some installation paths do not create the folder.

Option 1: Back up with OneDrive through Windows Backup

Microsoft documents Windows Backup as a way to sync selected Desktop, Documents, Pictures, Videos and Music folders to OneDrive. A free Microsoft account includes 5 GB of OneDrive storage under the current guidance, so compare the size of your selected folders with the available space before starting.

Prepare the account and storage

  1. Sign in to the personal Microsoft account that should hold the backup. Do not assume that a different account used by another Windows session contains your files.
  2. Check the account’s available OneDrive storage. If the selected folders are larger than the available space, remove unneeded files, use another backup method, or increase capacity before relying on cloud synchronization.
  3. Connect the computer to reliable power and internet. A large upload can take a long time, and interrupting it before completion leaves an incomplete backup.

Select the folders

  1. Open the Windows Backup app from the Start menu.
  2. Review the folder selections for Desktop, Documents, Pictures, Videos and Music.
  3. Enable only the folders you have checked, and separately copy custom folders that are outside those locations. Selecting the standard folders does not automatically include every folder on every drive.
  4. Leave the computer connected until synchronization has finished. Use the OneDrive status indicators to identify files that are still uploading or have errors.

Verify the cloud copy

  1. Open OneDrive on the web and sign in with the same personal Microsoft account.
  2. Browse to each backed-up folder and confirm that important files and recent changes appear there.
  3. Open or download several representative files, including at least one large file and files created by different applications. A folder listing alone is not proof that every file uploaded correctly.
  4. Resolve any synchronization errors and repeat the check before beginning the downgrade.

Keep the account credentials available. A cloud copy is only useful if you can sign in to it after Windows has been changed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Option 2: Copy files to an external drive

An external hard drive, SSD, USB drive or other external storage is useful when internet access is limited, the collection is large, or you want a copy that does not depend on the Windows installation. Microsoft identifies external storage as an option for large collections and offline access; no particular make, model, capacity or price is required.

Prepare the drive

  1. Choose a drive with more free space than the total data you plan to copy. Include room for hidden folders or additional files you may discover during your inventory.
  2. Connect it directly to the computer and wait for Windows to assign a drive letter.
  3. Open File Explorer and confirm that the drive is the intended destination. If it contains existing data, do not format it until you have checked that data is no longer needed.

Copy the files

  1. Open each source location in File Explorer, including standard user folders, Downloads, custom project paths and other internal drives.
  2. Select the folders and files, choose Copy, open the corresponding folder on the external drive and choose Paste. Preserve a clear folder structure so that restoration is straightforward.
  3. Wait for all copy dialogs to finish. If Windows reports a path, permission or filename error, record the affected item and resolve it rather than skipping it silently.
  4. Repeat the process for each Windows user account and each internal drive that contains required data.

Verify before disconnecting

  1. Open the external drive and compare its folders with your checklist.
  2. Open representative documents, images, videos, archives and project files directly from the external drive. Choose files from different folders and include recent files.
  3. Check that file sizes are plausible and that the files are not zero bytes or partial temporary files.
  4. Use Windows’ safe-eject command before disconnecting the drive.

After verification, disconnect the drive and keep it away from the computer while changing Windows. This prevents an installer or an accidental format selection from affecting the only verified copy.

Option 3: Set up File History for versioned files

File History is designed to preserve versions of personal files on an external drive or a network location. It is useful when you want to recover an earlier version as well as the latest copy, but it still requires you to confirm that the intended folders are included.

  1. Connect the external drive or make the network location available.
  2. Open the File History settings in Windows and select the intended destination.
  3. Review the folders being protected and add any supported locations that matter to you.
  4. Allow File History to complete a run before downgrading.
  5. Use the File History restore interface to browse a few versions and confirm that recent files are present.

File History does not replace a separate, plainly visible copy when you are about to perform a clean installation. If the destination is connected during the installation, it is exposed to mistakes; disconnect it after verification.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use Windows.old only as a fallback

After some upgrades, Windows temporarily stores the previous installation and personal files in Windows.old. Microsoft says personal files may remain there for 10 days, after which most of the folder’s contents are automatically deleted. A clean installation may not preserve it, and Reset this PC does not create it.

The built-in Go back function also depends on rollback data and other conditions. It is a recovery convenience, not an archival copy: it can disappear when the rollback files are removed, and it does not protect against drive failure, a mistaken partition choice or a failed installation.

Run a final verification gate

Do not start the downgrade until every applicable item below is true:

  • You know whether you are using Go back, a clean installation or Reset this PC.
  • Your inventory includes standard folders, Downloads, custom locations, other drives and other user accounts.
  • The backup is independent of the Windows system drive.
  • Cloud files are visible through OneDrive on the web, or files on the external drive open successfully.
  • The backup contains recent versions, not just an old archive.
  • You have enough cloud or external-drive capacity for the complete set.
  • You know how you will sign in to the cloud account or reconnect the external drive after Windows is changed.
  • The external backup is disconnected if you are about to boot installation media or reset the computer.

Downgrade after the backup is verified

If Go back is available

  1. Leave the verified backup untouched.
  2. Open Settings > System > Recovery and select Go back.
  3. Read the reason and update prompts, then continue only if the previous-version choice is the one you intend to use.
  4. Expect apps and drivers installed after the upgrade to be removed and settings changes to be reverted.
  5. After Windows restarts, confirm that your user profile and required files are accessible. Keep the independent backup until you have completed this check.

If you are installing from USB media

  1. Shut down the computer and disconnect the verified external backup drive.
  2. Boot from the installation media and pay close attention to the edition, disk and partition screens.
  3. Do not delete or format a partition containing files you still need unless those files exist in a verified independent backup.
  4. Complete the installation, install required drivers and updates appropriate to the chosen Windows release, and reconnect the backup only after reaching the desktop.
  5. Copy files back in small groups and open them as you restore them.

If you use Reset this PC

  1. Confirm that the external or cloud backup is complete before opening the reset workflow.
  2. Read whether the selected option keeps or removes personal files; do not treat a “keep my files” label as a substitute for a backup.
  3. Start the reset only after confirming the destination copy and account access.
  4. Restore files after Windows is working and preserve the backup until the restored data has been checked.

Restore and check files after the downgrade

Do not erase the backup immediately after the first successful boot. First install the applications needed to open your files, then restore a small, representative set and verify it.

Common mistakes and fixes

Backing up only Desktop and Documents

Problem: Downloads, custom project folders or another internal drive are missing.

Fix: Compare the backup against a manually prepared inventory and copy every nonstandard location.

Assuming synchronization is complete

Problem: The cloud folder exists, but recent files are absent or marked with an error.

Fix: Wait for synchronization, resolve errors, and verify the files through OneDrive on the web before downgrading.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Leaving the external drive connected

Problem: The installer sees the backup drive and it becomes possible to format or overwrite the wrong disk.

Relying on System Restore

Problem: System Restore returns Windows system files, registry settings and installed programs to an earlier state, but the personal files you need are not independently copied.

Fix: Use an external or cloud file backup. Treat System Restore as a system-state recovery tool, not a file archive.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Waiting beyond the rollback window

Problem: The Go back option is gone or Windows.old has been cleaned up.

Fix: Do not delay the independent backup. If the rollback option has disappeared, plan for the data-loss risk of a fresh installation and verify the backup before proceeding.

Important note if you are downgrading to Windows 10

Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025. In 2026, moving back to Windows 10 should not be described as a normal return to ongoing free Windows Update security support. Confirm the security, application and hardware implications for your specific computer before choosing that destination.

How long to keep the backup

Keep the verified cloud or external copy until the downgraded system is stable and your important files have been restored or confirmed accessible. If you use the external drive as an archive, store it disconnected when it is not needed and maintain at least one additional copy for irreplaceable data. The essential rule is simple: the copy must remain available until you have proved that the new Windows installation can access everything you need.
