A platform account that is unlinked and attached to a different EA Account does not carry the game’s progress with it.
The safest approach is to identify the game and route first, preserve the existing account link, follow that title’s official transfer instructions, and verify the destination save before wiping, selling, or deleting the old installation. The steps below cover the decisions that apply across EA games, then call out mobile games and the documented STAR WARS Jedi: Survivor case separately.

Start with the three details that determine whether a backup is possible
“Changing platforms” can mean several different things: moving from one console generation to the next, switching between two consoles in the same family, moving from console to PC, or moving from PlayStation to Xbox. EA’s rules are not identical for those routes. Write down these three details before touching account settings:
- Game and edition: record the exact title, edition, and whether you are moving the full game save or only online/account progression.
- Source platform: identify the current console, generation, store edition, or mobile device where the save exists.
- Destination platform: identify the new console, generation, PC or mobile device.
EA says cross-progression can vary by game, mode, and console generation. A statement that applies to one title therefore cannot be treated as a promise for another. Search EA Help for the game’s own “transfer saved data,” “cross-progression,” or “find lost progress” instructions before you sign out or unlink anything.

Understand what “backup” means for an EA save
There are two separate ideas that are often confused:
Account-linked cloud data
EA’s support guidance says, “The cloud is linked to your EA Account.” When a game supports the relevant kind of cloud or cross-progression, signing in to that same EA Account can make eligible data available on another supported device. This is an account relationship, not a guarantee that every local save can be downloaded or used on every platform.
A title- and platform-specific transfer
Some games require a particular migration process, a supported console-generation route, or a platform cloud-save service. The game may transfer only a mode, profile, or account-level progression rather than the entire local campaign. Treat the game’s official instructions as the authority for the route you are taking.

Prepare the old platform without risking the original save
- Keep the old installation intact. Do not delete the game, clear its local data, factory-reset the device, or trade it in yet. The old device is your fallback while you test the destination.
- Open the game and identify the most recent usable save. If the title has more than one profile, slot, mode, or edition, note which one you intend to move. Allow the game to finish saving before you exit.
- Confirm the EA Account currently in use. Sign in to the EA Account associated with the old platform and verify the connected platform account shown in account settings. If you have more than one EA Account, write down which one owns the game activity; do not create or select a replacement account merely because its email address is easier to access.
- Record the state you expect to see later. Note the character, campaign chapter, level, currency, unlocks, or other visible markers that identify the correct save. Screenshots are useful evidence when a title offers several profiles or when you need to distinguish an old save from a newly created one.
- Read the exact transfer article for the title and route. Check whether it names your source and destination, the supported edition, and the mode whose progress is covered. If your route is not listed, pause rather than extrapolate from another game.
Keep account continuity intact
The account link is the most important safeguard. EA says saves and achievements stored in its cloud are tied to the EA Account, and cloud access requires signing in to that account. Moving a game between accounts does not move the underlying data with it.

Unlinking is especially risky. EA warns that progress will not transfer when a platform account is unlinked from one EA Account and relinked to another. Entitlements can also remain with the EA Account to which the platform was first linked. In practical terms, changing the email, creating a second EA Account, or attaching the old console identity to a different account can leave you with a destination that appears empty even though the original data still exists on the original account.
If you are unsure which EA Account is connected, stop before making changes and use EA’s account-recovery or support process. Do not test possibilities by repeatedly unlinking and relinking accounts; each change can make the ownership and progress relationship harder to untangle.
Use this route matrix before you move

Follow the game’s documented transfer procedure
Once the route is confirmed, use the sequence specified for that game. A reliable general order is:
- Update the old installation only if the title’s instructions require it. Do not interrupt a save or sign out while an in-game or platform cloud synchronization indicator is active.
- Leave the original EA Account and platform link unchanged. The destination should use that same EA Account unless the title explicitly documents a different account model.
- Prepare the destination platform. Install the correct edition, sign in to the destination platform account, and connect it to the EA Account identified in your preparation notes.
- Start the title and wait for its first synchronization or transfer prompt. Read any prompt carefully. If it offers multiple profiles, choose the one matching the markers you recorded rather than accepting a blank or newly generated profile.
- Allow the process to finish before launching another profile or changing settings. Closing the game during a migration can make it unclear which version is current.
- Check the save in the mode named by the transfer article. Confirm the chapter, character, level, unlocks, or other markers you recorded. A successful sign-in with missing progress is not a successful transfer.
- Keep the old platform available until verification is complete. Only after the destination shows the expected data should you consider deleting the old installation or resetting the old device.
What the Jedi: Survivor example teaches
EA’s instructions for STAR WARS Jedi: Survivor demonstrate why a title-specific article is essential. EA limits the documented transfer to supported console generations. For Xbox generation transfers, the instructions use Xbox Cloud saves. EA also states, “You can’t transfer game data between a PlayStation® and an Xbox.”

That example supports two practical conclusions:
- A transfer can be available within one console family while being unavailable between different ecosystems.
- Even when a route is supported, the required mechanism may be the platform’s cloud-save feature rather than a general EA export.
Do not use the Jedi: Survivor procedure as a template for another EA title. Check the other title’s supported generations, editions, modes, and platform pairs instead.

EA says linked mobile games can be used on multiple devices and that progress can be transferred. The critical action must happen before you move or delete the old installation: link the game to your EA Account using the game’s own account or settings screen, then confirm that the account is shown as connected.
An unlinked guest game is different. EA says guest progress is stored only on the current device, and lost guest progress may be permanently unrecoverable. A phone backup or app reinstall should therefore not be treated as an EA-account backup unless the game’s instructions explicitly say that the game data is included and restorable.
- Open the mobile game on the old device.
- Find its account, profile, or settings area and choose the option to link or sign in to an EA Account.
- Complete the sign-in and return to the game.
- Confirm that your existing profile or progress is still visible.
- Install the game on the new device and sign in with the same EA Account.
- Verify the expected progress before removing the old app or resetting the old phone.
If the old device is already gone and the game was never linked, recovery depends on that title’s support process; there is no universal EA method that can reconstruct an unlinked guest save.
Do not use unlinking as a troubleshooting experiment
Unlinking may look like a way to correct the wrong-account problem, but EA’s warnings make it a poor first step. It does not transfer progress to the account you choose next, and entitlements may stay attached to the original EA Account. If you have already unlinked:

- Stop changing account links on both platforms.
- Sign in to the original EA Account and the original platform account, if possible.
- Check whether the game and progress are still visible there.
- Collect the game title, platform IDs, EA Account email, purchase or entitlement details, and screenshots of any error messages.
- Contact EA support using the title’s account or missing-progress guidance and describe the exact unlink and relink sequence.
Do not promise yourself that reconnecting the old platform will restore everything automatically; the outcome depends on the title and the account state.

EA’s public guidance does not define one universal verification checklist, so use evidence from the game itself. Verification should include all of the following that apply:
- The destination is signed in to the same EA Account identified before the move.
- The expected game edition and platform generation are installed.
- The relevant mode opens without asking you to create a new profile.
- At least two distinctive progress markers match your notes, such as campaign location and unlocked equipment.
- Any title-specific transfer or cloud indicator reports completion rather than a pending or failed state.
- The old platform still retains the original save until these checks pass.
If the destination shows a blank profile, exit without overwriting the old save. Recheck the account, edition, route, and mode named in the title’s instructions before trying again.
Troubleshooting by symptom
The game opens, but progress is missing
Confirm that the destination is using the original EA Account, not merely the same console login or a newly created EA Account. Then check whether the missing progress belongs to a mode or platform combination that the title excludes. Keep the old platform untouched while you investigate.

The platform account is linked to the wrong EA Account
Do not immediately unlink it. First establish which EA Account contains the original activity and read the game’s account-linking guidance. Because progress does not transfer to a different EA Account through unlinking and relinking, an account change can worsen the situation.
The game offers no transfer prompt
A prompt may not exist for that route. Verify the game’s supported platforms, generations, editions, and modes. If the official instructions do not list your route, treat the absence as an unresolved compatibility issue rather than evidence that the save is safely transferable.
A mobile guest profile disappeared
Guest progress is device-only according to EA’s mobile guidance. If the old device or installation is still available, reopen the game and link the profile immediately. If it has been erased, contact the title’s support channel, but recovery is not guaranteed.
The old platform was already wiped
Sign in to the original EA Account on the destination and check the title’s supported cloud or transfer path. If the game relied on a local or unsupported save, EA’s account cloud cannot be assumed to contain it. Provide support with the exact platform route and any progress evidence you retained.
What not to assume
- Do not assume that every EA game has cross-progression.
- Do not assume that cloud-linked account data equals a downloadable, universal save file.
- Do not assume that a same-generation move and a cross-generation move follow the same rules.
- Do not assume that online progression and a single-player campaign save share one transfer path.
- Do not assume that a USB or external drive can bridge two console ecosystems.
- Do not assume that changing the email address or creating a new EA Account preserves ownership of the old progress.
- Do not erase the old device until the destination has opened and verified the expected save.
A printable pre-move checklist
- Game title, edition, source platform, destination platform, and generation are written down.
- The title’s official transfer or cross-progression instructions explicitly cover that route.
- The original EA Account and connected platform account are identified.
- No unlinking or account swap is planned unless the title’s instructions specifically require it.
- The latest old-platform save is visible and the game has finished saving or synchronizing.
- Distinctive progress markers are recorded.
- For mobile, the guest profile is linked before the old app or device is removed.
- The destination is installed with the correct edition and signed in to the same EA Account.
- The expected profile and progress are verified on the destination.
- The old installation remains available until verification succeeds.
EA’s support policies and individual game instructions can change. Recheck the current article for your exact title and route immediately before moving the save, especially when a new console generation, edition, or game mode is involved.
