Back up any clip or screenshot stored on the Xbox network before its 90-day retention period ends. On your console, open My games & apps > See all > Apps > Captures, use the Captures app’s backup controls, and send the files to either OneDrive or an external storage device. Xbox says the app identifies captures approaching deletion, supports moving and managing captures, and can bulk-upload them. The announcement does not define external-drive specifications or a way to restore a capture after Xbox-network deletion, so verify that every important file is present in your chosen destination before the deadline.
What the 90-day deletion policy actually covers
Xbox announced on September 27, 2023 that “Game captures stored on the Xbox network will be deleted after 90 days.” The statement applies to captures held on the Xbox network: screenshots and video clips that have not been copied elsewhere. It is not a blanket statement that every copy in every location disappears after 90 days.

The distinction matters when you plan a backup. A file that you have successfully uploaded to OneDrive or moved to an external storage device is a separate copy in the destination you selected. The announcement does not state retention terms for those destinations, so treat the 90-day rule as an Xbox-network deadline rather than a guarantee about OneDrive or local storage.

Find captures that are approaching deletion
The Captures app can show which items stored on the Xbox network are marked for upcoming deletion. Check this list first instead of trying to remember when you created every clip.
- Press the Xbox button on the controller.
- Open My games & apps.
- Select See all.
- Open Apps.
- Choose Captures.
When the app opens, use its Tell me more option to begin. Review the items flagged for upcoming deletion and decide which ones must be preserved. The warning is useful for triage: a clip you can replace may not need a backup, while a tournament recording, achievement moment, or personal screenshot may be irreplaceable.
Prepare a backup plan before uploading
A short check before you start prevents the most common mistake: assuming that selecting an upload command is the same as confirming a backup.
- Identify the source. Confirm that the item is stored on the Xbox network and appears in the Captures app.
- Pick one destination. Xbox names OneDrive and external storage as backup destinations. Decide whether a cloud copy or a physical local copy fits your workflow.
- Start with the deadline list. Preserve captures marked for upcoming deletion first, then handle older items that are not yet flagged.
- Allow time for a check. Do not wait until the final day if the files are important. The announcement gives the retention period, but it does not promise an upload duration or describe what happens when an upload is interrupted.
- Plan to verify. You should be able to locate the copied capture in the destination itself before considering the backup complete.
Choose between OneDrive and external storage
OneDrive: a cloud copy with an automatic option
Xbox explicitly names OneDrive as a place to back up captures. The announcement also says you can configure future captures to back up automatically to OneDrive. That makes OneDrive useful if you want an ongoing workflow rather than a one-time rescue of the current deletion list.
Xbox further says captures saved to OneDrive can be edited on a PC with Microsoft Clipchamp. In practical terms, OneDrive can serve as both an archive location and a handoff point for editing, provided you have confirmed that the upload completed and the file is visible there.
External storage: a local physical copy
Xbox also identifies an external storage device as a backup destination. This is the option to consider when you prefer to keep a copy on a device you control locally or when you do not want your workflow to depend on a cloud folder.

The September 27, 2023 announcement does not specify the required drive capacity, connector, file-system format, or compatible models. Those details can vary with console and system requirements. Do not infer that any particular drive will work from this announcement alone; check the current requirements for your console before buying or formatting hardware.

| What kind of destination is it? | Cloud storage named by Xbox. | Local physical storage device named by Xbox. |
| Can future captures be backed up automatically? | Yes. Xbox says automatic backup can be set for future captures. | Not stated in the announcement. |
| How are existing captures handled? | The Captures app can bulk-upload captures to OneDrive. | The Captures app can move captures to external storage. |
| Can you edit a saved capture on a PC? | Xbox says captures saved to OneDrive can be edited with Microsoft Clipchamp. | Not stated in the announcement. |

| What should you confirm before deleting the Xbox-network copy? | That the capture is present in your OneDrive destination. | That the capture is present on the selected external device. |
The choice is therefore about workflow, not an unverified specification comparison. OneDrive is the better fit when automatic future backup or PC editing is valuable. External storage is the better fit when you want a local device. In either case, the decisive check is whether the file is actually present in the destination.
Back up existing captures to OneDrive
Use the Captures app to handle the files already on your console or on the Xbox network. Xbox describes the app as supporting capture management and bulk upload to OneDrive.
- Press the Xbox button.
- Go to My games & apps > See all > Apps > Captures.
- Choose Tell me more when it is offered.
- In the Captures app, review the items marked for upcoming deletion.
- Select the captures you want to preserve and choose the OneDrive upload action supplied by the app. For a large set, use the app’s bulk-upload capability rather than handling every item individually.
- Let the upload process finish, then check OneDrive itself for the copied files.
The announcement does not publish a separate command name, progress indicator, folder path, or upload-time estimate. If your screen uses slightly different wording, stay within the Captures app and follow its OneDrive upload prompts rather than relying on a button label from an older guide.
Move existing captures to external storage
The same Captures app is the starting point for a local copy. Xbox says you can move and manage captures on an external storage device.
- Connect the external storage device to the console according to the current requirements for your Xbox model.
- Open My games & apps > See all > Apps > Captures after pressing the Xbox button.
- Use Tell me more if the app presents it.
- Review the upcoming-deletion list and select the captures that need to be preserved.
- Choose the app’s option to move the selected captures to external storage. Use the bulk-management controls when you have many files.
- After the move completes, inspect the external device and confirm that the captures are there.
Xbox’s cited announcement does not establish which capacity, connector, format, or model is accepted. If the console does not recognize a device, do not assume that changing a format or buying a particular model will solve the problem based on this article; consult the current requirements for your console and the device’s documentation.

Set future captures to back up automatically to OneDrive
If you create captures regularly, a one-time upload leaves the next clips exposed to the same deletion policy. Xbox says the Captures experience can be configured so future captures back up automatically to OneDrive.
- Open the Captures app through My games & apps > See all > Apps > Captures.
- Start with Tell me more if it appears.
- Look for the app’s OneDrive backup setting and enable automatic backup for future captures.
- Create a new test capture after enabling the setting.
- Check OneDrive for that test file before relying on the setting for irreplaceable clips.
The announcement confirms that the automatic option exists but does not document a more specific toggle name or a separate settings path. Menu wording can change with console software, so use the controls shown in your current Captures app. The test capture is a practical verification step; it is not a substitute for checking every important file already marked for deletion.
Verify the copy before the 90-day deadline
A backup is useful only if the destination contains a usable copy. Xbox advises users to check their selected backup destination; it does not describe a post-deletion restoration procedure.

- For OneDrive: open the OneDrive destination you use and locate each priority screenshot or clip. Confirm that the file appears there rather than assuming that an upload command completed.
- For external storage: inspect the device after the move and locate the transferred captures. Keep the device connected or stored safely until you have completed this check.
- For a bulk operation: compare the items you intended to preserve with the files visible in the destination. If an important item is missing, repeat the backup action for that item while it remains available on the Xbox network.
- For automatic OneDrive backup: verify at least one newly created capture after enabling the setting. Continue checking important future captures until the workflow is familiar.
Do not delete a source capture merely because the console displayed an upload or move option. The destination check is the point at which you know a second copy exists.
Use the deadline list to prioritize large libraries
If your Captures library is extensive, work in batches instead of trying to organize everything at once.
First pass: items marked for upcoming deletion
Open the Captures app and handle every item it marks for upcoming deletion. These are the files with the clearest time pressure under Xbox’s 90-day Xbox-network policy.

Second pass: irreplaceable items not yet flagged
After the deadline list is safe, preserve clips that would be difficult or impossible to recreate: personal milestones, event recordings, instructional footage, or screenshots that document a project. The app’s warning is a deadline aid, not a value judgment about which memories matter.

Third pass: establish the future workflow
Choose automatic OneDrive backup if that matches your habits, or make a recurring manual routine for OneDrive or external storage. Verify the first new capture so the routine is based on a confirmed copy rather than an assumption.
What the Xbox announcement does not tell you
Keeping the limits of the published guidance clear prevents bad advice.
- No detailed external-drive specification: the announcement names external storage but gives no capacity, connector, format, or model requirement.
- No recovery procedure after deletion: it does not explain how to restore an item once Xbox removes it from the Xbox network.
- No promise about destination retention: the 90-day statement concerns Xbox-network captures. It does not state how long OneDrive or an external device will retain your copy.
- No upload-time guarantee: the announcement does not say how long a bulk upload or move will take.
- No assurance that an unverified transfer succeeded: you must check the destination yourself.
These omissions are reasons to verify and act early, not reasons to wait for a deletion warning.

The capture is not in the upcoming-deletion list
The 90-day warning applies to captures stored on the Xbox network. A capture that is not marked may not be approaching its deadline, but the announcement does not provide a complete explanation for every possible status. If the clip is important, treat it as a candidate for backup anyway and check the destination after copying it.

The destination does not show the file
Do not count the transfer as complete. Reopen the Captures app, select the missing item, and repeat the relevant OneDrive upload or external-storage move while the Xbox-network copy is still available. Then inspect the destination again. The published guidance does not offer a separate recovery path for a file that has already disappeared.
An external device is not recognized
The cited guidance does not state the hardware requirements, so this article cannot identify a capacity, connector, format, or model as a guaranteed fix. Check the current requirements for your specific console and the device documentation before changing anything.
Practical choices for common situations
You have a few clips and want the simplest cloud workflow
Use the Captures app to upload the priority clips to OneDrive, then confirm each file appears there. If you create captures often, enable automatic OneDrive backup and verify a new test capture.
You have many clips and prefer a local archive
Use the app’s management and bulk controls to move the selected captures to external storage. Because Xbox does not state drive specifications in the announcement, confirm compatibility for your console before relying on this route. Inspect the device after the move.
You are close to the deletion deadline
Start with the app’s upcoming-deletion list, choose one destination, and preserve those items first. Avoid spending the remaining time reorganizing filenames or folders; the essential outcome is a verified copy outside the Xbox network.
You want to edit clips on a computer
OneDrive may fit this workflow because Xbox says captures saved there can be edited on a PC with Microsoft Clipchamp. Upload first, verify the files in OneDrive, and then edit the copies there.
Final checklist
- Open My games & apps > See all > Apps > Captures.
- Review captures marked for upcoming deletion.
- Choose OneDrive or an external storage device.
- Use the app’s upload, move, or bulk-management controls.
- For future clips, enable automatic OneDrive backup if appropriate.
- Locate the copied files in the destination.
- Keep the verified copy; do not rely on a recovery process that Xbox’s announcement does not document.
The Bottom Line
Xbox-network captures face deletion after 90 days. Use the Captures app now to upload them to OneDrive or move them to external storage, and verify the copy in that destination before the deadline. Xbox’s published guidance does not specify external-drive requirements or explain recovery after deletion.
