How to Back Up Steam Game Files Before a Game Is Removed

By Freedom251 Team · · 10 min read

If a Steam game may be delisted, create a separate copy while it is still installed: open the game’s Properties, use the backup command in Installed Files, save the archive to another location, and test it. Then copy the game’s saves, configuration, and custom content separately, because Steam’s game-file backup may not include them.

A backup preserves files; it does not guarantee that Steam will offer the game again, that a future installation will succeed, or that online services and licensing will continue. Use the procedure below to preserve the most you can while the title remains available.

What a Steam backup actually protects

Steam’s backup feature packages the installed game files into backup data that can be restored through the Steam client. It is useful when you want a recoverable copy before uninstalling a game, replacing a computer, or losing access to a download.

The backup is not a permanent ownership record. Valve’s Steam Subscriber Agreement describes Steam content as licensed rather than sold and says the license grants no ownership. Whether a removed title can later be downloaded, installed, activated, or played depends on the specific game, account, digital-rights system, and online services. Treat the backup as file preservation, not a promise of future access.

Check whether the game is eligible

Steam says its backup feature is intended for games that were fully downloaded, installed, and patched through Steam. A title that relies on a third-party installer or downloader may not work with the feature. Steam specifically warns that many multiplayer and free-to-play games fall into this category.

Check the individual game instead of assuming every Library entry can be backed up. If the backup command is absent, fails immediately, or produces an unusable archive, the game’s installation method may not be compatible.

Questions to answer before starting

  • Is the game completely installed rather than partially downloaded?
  • Has Steam finished applying the current patch?
  • Does the game use an external installer, launcher, or downloader?
  • Does it depend on online services that may be required even after the files are preserved?
  • Do you have enough free space at the destination for the backup and for separate saves or custom files?

Steam’s official instructions are in Using the Steam Backup Feature. The exact appearance of buttons can change between Steam client versions, but the backup command remains associated with the installed game’s properties.

How to create the backup in Steam

  1. Open your Library. Find the game you want to preserve.
  2. Open Properties. Right-click the game and choose Properties.
  3. Open the installed-files area. Select Installed Files (older clients may use slightly different wording).
  4. Choose the backup command. Select the option to back up the game files.
  5. Select a destination folder. Use a location with adequate free space. A different physical drive is preferable if the purpose is protection against failure of the drive that currently holds the game.
  6. Start the backup. Let Steam finish without exiting the client, disconnecting the destination, or putting the computer to sleep.
  7. Open the destination when Steam offers to do so. Use the resulting folder to confirm that backup files were created, then move or copy them to the storage location you intend to keep.
  8. Test the copy. Do not rely only on a completed progress bar. Steam warns that an interruption or interference can leave a backup incomplete, so perform a restoration test before deleting the installed game.

Keep the backup folder together. Renaming individual files, changing the internal folder structure, or moving only part of the archive can prevent Steam from recognizing it during restoration.

What is included—and what is not

Item What to expect What you should do
Installed game files The primary purpose of Steam’s backup feature, provided the title is compatible and fully installed through Steam. Keep every file Steam creates in the backup destination.
Game saves Not guaranteed. Steam warns that backups of Valve games do not include saved games. Find the game’s save location and copy it separately.
Configuration files May be omitted from the game-file archive. Preserve settings files separately if they matter to you.
Custom multiplayer maps and other custom content Steam specifically warns that these are not included for Valve games. Copy the relevant custom-content folders independently.
Third-party game data Save and configuration locations vary because the developer determines how the game stores them. Use the game’s documentation or reliable community information to identify the correct folders.

Do not assume that a successful archive contains your progress. The backup feature is centered on the installed program; data stored elsewhere on the computer is a separate preservation task.

Back up saves, settings, and custom content separately

After creating the Steam archive, identify every file that represents your personal progress or modifications. The correct locations differ by game and developer, so there is no single path that works for all titles. Check the game’s documentation, its support pages, or well-maintained community instructions for the save, configuration, and custom-content locations.

Copy those folders to a clearly named directory beside the Steam backup. Include the game name, the date, and the computer or account used to create the copy. If a title stores data in more than one location, preserve each location rather than assuming one folder is complete.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a Valve game, pay particular attention to saves, custom multiplayer maps, and configuration files because Steam’s FAQ specifically excludes them from the backup. For a third-party game, do not infer inclusion or exclusion from another title; the developer’s storage design controls the result.

How to test the backup before uninstalling

A test is the most important safeguard. Steam explicitly recommends testing because an interrupted or interfered-with operation can produce a backup that appears complete but cannot be restored.

  1. Leave the original installation intact while testing.
  2. Install or use a separate Steam environment, such as another computer or a temporary library location with enough free space.
  3. Sign in to the Steam account that owns the game.
  4. Open Steam’s backup-and-restore command and choose the option to restore from an existing backup.
  5. Point Steam to the folder containing the backup files and follow the installation prompts.
  6. Launch the restored game while online and, where practical, check an offline launch as well. Confirm that the program starts, your separately copied saves load, and important custom content is present.

A test on the same installation can be misleading because Steam may simply use files that were already present. A genuinely separate destination gives you stronger evidence that the archive itself is usable. Do not remove the original until the restored copy has passed the checks that matter for your game.

How to restore the files later

Steam’s FAQ describes the general restoration process:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Install Steam and sign in to the relevant account.
  2. Open the client command for backing up and restoring games.
  3. Choose the restore option and select the folder containing the backup files.
  4. Follow Steam’s installation steps and choose the library location for the restored game.
  5. After installation, copy your separately preserved saves, configuration, and custom files back to the locations required by that title.

Steam cautions that special characters in the Steam installation path can prevent a restore from completing. If restoration fails, try a simple path using ordinary letters and numbers for the Steam installation and backup locations, then run the restore again. Keep the original backup untouched while troubleshooting so you can retry from a clean copy.

Backup files are different from Steam recognizing an existing installation

There are two different recovery situations:

You have a separate backup archive

Use Steam’s restore-backup command. This is the workflow described above and is designed for files produced by Steam’s backup feature.

The original game files are still in a library folder

If Steam shows a game as uninstalled even though its files remain in the correct location, Steam Support’s Installed games are appearing as uninstalled article says you can start an installation so the client detects existing files, or add the existing library folder through Storage Manager. That process can recover recognition of files already on the drive; it is not a replacement for making a separate, tested copy before uninstalling or changing the drive.

Choosing where to keep the copy

Destination Advantages Limitations and precautions
Another folder on the same internal drive Fast and convenient; no additional hardware is required. A drive failure, accidental format, or ransomware event can affect both the installed game and the copy.
A separate internal drive Keeps the backup apart from the drive that runs the game and is usually convenient for frequent access. It is still inside the same computer, so it is not protection against loss of the entire machine.
Portable external SSD Easy to disconnect and store separately; generally practical for moving a backup between computers. Steam does not require a particular drive type, speed, or capacity. Capacity must match the game files plus any saves and custom content you keep.

An external SSD is an optional destination, not a compatibility solution. The drive merely stores the copy; it cannot make Steam recognize an unsupported game, restore a damaged archive, bypass licensing, or replace an online service that has shut down.

What removal or delisting can mean

“Removed” can refer to a game being delisted from the Steam store, losing its download button, losing activation support, or becoming dependent on an unavailable service. Those outcomes are not universal. The available evidence does not establish one rule for every removed title.

Before relying on a preserved copy, consider the dependencies that are specific to the game:

  • Whether your account already has a license for the title.
  • Whether the game requires a publisher account or a separate launcher.
  • Whether its DRM checks can still be completed.
  • Whether multiplayer servers or other online services remain available.
  • Whether the game can be activated or launched without contacting a service that may later disappear.

Preserving files can reduce the risk of losing a local installation, but it cannot change the terms of the license or guarantee that a future client, operating system, or service will run the game.

Troubleshooting common failures

The backup option is missing

Verify that the game is fully installed and patched through Steam. A title that uses a third-party installer or downloader may not support Steam’s backup feature. Preserve the installation folder and locate saves or configuration files separately, but do not label that manual copy as a verified Steam backup.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The backup stops or the result looks incomplete

Retry with the game closed and the destination connected directly and continuously. Make sure the destination has sufficient free space and that the computer will not sleep during the operation. Steam’s guidance emphasizes testing because interruption or interference can invalidate the copy.

Steam cannot find the backup during restoration

Select the folder Steam created rather than a parent folder that merely contains it. Do not rename or split the backup files. If the Steam installation path contains unusual special characters, repeat the restore using a simple path, as Steam warns that those characters can block completion.

The restored game starts without my progress

Restore the saves, settings, and custom-content folders you copied separately. The game-file archive may not contain them, and third-party titles place them in developer-selected locations.

Steam says the game is uninstalled even though files remain

Use the file-recognition procedure in Steam Support’s “Installed games are appearing as uninstalled” article: start an install so Steam can scan the existing files, or add the library folder through Storage Manager. This applies to files still in the original library location, not to a backup archive that needs the restore command.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Steam backup versus copying the full installation

Steam’s built-in method is the more structured option when the game is eligible. A manual copy of the entire installed game folder can be useful as an additional snapshot, especially for a title that Steam cannot package, but it has different trade-offs.

Consideration Steam backup feature Manual full-folder copy
Creation Guided from the game’s Properties and designed for Steam restoration. Requires you to identify and copy the complete installation folder yourself.
Restoration Uses Steam’s restore-backup command. May require Steam to detect existing files through an install or Storage Manager; recognition is not guaranteed.
Saves and settings Not automatically guaranteed; copy them separately. Only preserves data inside the copied folder. Files stored elsewhere still require separate copies.
Compatibility Limited for games using third-party installers or downloaders. Can preserve local files from an unsupported title, but does not solve licensing, DRM, or online-service dependencies.
Proof of recoverability Steam provides a defined restore path, but you should test it. There is no equivalent Steam archive test; you must verify the files and any required metadata yourself.

For an eligible game, the strongest practical plan is to create and test the Steam backup, then preserve saves and custom data separately. For an ineligible title, retain a complete local copy only as a file-preservation measure and document where its personal data is stored.

A practical pre-removal sequence

  1. Finish all downloads and patches.
  2. Create the Steam backup from Properties and Installed Files.
  3. Move or copy the generated backup to storage separate from the active game installation.
  4. Locate and copy saves, configuration, and custom content.
  5. Restore the backup in a separate test environment.
  6. Launch the restored game and verify the separately copied data.
  7. Keep the backup, personal-data copy, and notes about the game account and required services together.

This sequence gives you a tested file set without claiming more than the files can provide: a preserved local copy, not guaranteed future Steam access.
