How to Back Up Selected Folders Instead of Every Photo on Your Phone

Android users can automate backups for specific device folders in Google Photos. On iPhone, Google Photos documents selecting individual photos or groups manually, while iCloud Photos uploads and synchronizes the entire library. Check each item’s backup status and your available account storage before deleting anything from the phone.

Choose the method that matches your phone

The phrase “selected folders” means different things on Android and iPhone. Google Photos on Android has a device-folder control: you can switch backup on for folders such as Camera, Screenshots, or Downloads and leave other folders off. The setting can run automatically for the folders you choose.

Google Photos on iPhone and iPad documents a different workflow. You select one or more photos or videos and start a backup for those items. The cited iPhone instructions do not describe an Android-style list of folders that can be included or excluded automatically.

Apple’s iCloud Photos is broader still. Apple says it uploads every photo and video and synchronizes changes across devices. That makes it useful for keeping an Apple photo library available everywhere, but it is not a selective-folder backup switch.

Google Photos on iPhone One photo, one video, or a manually selected group Manual selection is documented; an enabled backup setting may also upload photos automatically iPhone users who are willing to choose the items they want copied
iCloud Photos The whole photo library Automatic upload and synchronization People who want their Apple library available on their devices rather than filtered by folder
External SSD archive Files you export or transfer yourself Not an automatic phone-folder backup Anyone who wants an additional physical copy after exporting selected items

These distinctions prevent a common mistake: turning on a service that synchronizes everything when your goal is to keep screenshots, downloads, or another folder out of the cloud.

Plan the selection before turning anything on

Make a short inventory of the phone’s media folders first. Camera images may be irreplaceable, while screenshots, downloaded images, duplicate exports, and files created by editing or messaging apps may be temporary. There is no universal right list; the useful list is the one that matches what you would actually need after losing or replacing the phone.

Separate folders are easier to manage than a mixed folder. A folder switch cannot tell an important scan from a disposable screenshot stored beside it. If a folder contains both, move the files you need to preserve into a folder that will be backed up, or handle those individual files through an export or manual-selection workflow. Do not assume that excluding a mixed folder will somehow retain only its valuable items.

Also decide whether you want a fixed list or permission for future folders. A fixed list requires checking new folders as they appear. The broad Android setting that backs up all device folders is convenient, but it can defeat a carefully limited plan by including folders created later by another app.

Set up selected-folder backup on Android

Google’s Android instructions place the controls inside Google Photos’ backup settings. The exact sequence is:

  1. Open Google Photos.
  2. Open the profile menu.
  3. Choose Photos settings.
  4. Tap Backup.
  5. Choose Back up device folders.
  6. Turn on the folders you want included and turn off folders you want excluded.

The folder switches apply to device folders that Google Photos can identify on the phone. For example, you might keep Camera enabled, include a work-scanning folder, and leave Screenshots or Downloads disabled. The choice is made per folder, so it is more precise than an all-or-nothing photo-library setting.

Check the “Back up all device folders” setting

Google Photos also offers Back up all device folders. If that option is enabled, Google says photos in new device folders are backed up automatically. That behavior can undermine a carefully curated list: a messaging or editing app may create a new folder later, and its media could be included without another visit to settings.

For a controlled selection, review the all-folders option before relying on the individual switches. If you want only named folders, leave the broad all-folders behavior off and inspect the individual folder toggles. Revisit this page after installing an app that creates media folders or after a major phone change.

Decide what belongs in each folder

Use a simple rule for each folder:

  • Include folders containing irreplaceable camera images, scans, or other media you want copied automatically.
  • Exclude temporary screenshots, downloaded memes, duplicate exports, or app-generated images that do not need cloud storage.
  • Review mixed-use folders. If a single folder contains both important and disposable files, folder-level selection cannot distinguish them; move the important items to a folder you intend to back up or use a separate item-level/archive workflow.

The last case is important because a folder switch is not a per-file filter. Every eligible photo or video in an enabled folder is treated according to that folder’s backup setting.

Confirm that Android items actually reached the cloud

A folder switch is a rule, not proof that every file is already safe. Google Photos shows overall backup progress and a status for individual items. Open the app’s backup status and inspect representative files from each folder you enabled. Check an older file, a recent file, and a large video if those are the types you need to preserve.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Also verify that Google Photos is signed in to the account you intend to use. Google Account storage is shared by Google Photos, Drive, and Gmail. When that account is full, backup can stop. Check the available storage before treating the cloud copy as your only copy.

Do not delete local originals merely because a folder is marked for backup. First confirm that the selected items show a completed backup status and that they appear in the intended account. If you need an independent safeguard, keep another copy—such as an export on an external SSD—before removing files from the phone.

Back up selected photos on an iPhone with Google Photos

On iPhone and iPad, Google’s documented selective method works at the item level rather than through Android-style folder switches.

Back up one item

  1. Open Google Photos and locate the photo or video.
  2. Open the item.
  3. Tap Back up now.

Back up several items

  1. Touch and hold a photo or video to begin selecting.
  2. Continue selecting the other photos or videos you want copied.
  3. Tap Back up.

Google recommends keeping the app open and the iPhone plugged in while this runs. Completion can depend on the network connection, the amount of data being uploaded, and other conditions on the device. A selection that is still processing should not be treated as a finished backup.

Google’s iPhone and iPad instructions are at Back up photos & videos — iPhone & iPad.

What this method does—and does not—do

Manual selection gives you a limited set without requiring the entire library to be copied by that action. It does not create an automatic “Camera folder only” rule comparable to Android’s device-folder controls in the cited documentation. If you add new photos later, plan to select and back them up again unless you deliberately use a broader automatic backup setting.

If the Google Photos backup feature is enabled on the iPhone, it may upload photos automatically. That behavior is separate from the documented manual selection steps, so check the app’s backup status and settings if limiting uploads is important to you.

Understand why iCloud Photos is not a selective-folder solution

Apple describes iCloud Photos as a library service: “iCloud automatically uploads every photo and video you take to iCloud,” then keeps the library in sync across devices. Changes made in the library are part of that synchronization model. There is no folder toggle in this description for excluding Screenshots, Downloads, or another category while retaining the rest of the iCloud Photos library.

Apple’s guide is Set up and use iCloud Photos.

Choose iCloud Photos when your objective is access to the complete Apple library on supported devices. Do not choose it expecting the same selective-folder behavior as Google Photos on Android. If you need only a subset as a separate archive, export those chosen items to compatible external storage. That export is a manual file-copy workflow, not an iCloud folder filter, and the connection and storage hardware must work with your particular iPhone.

Use an external archive as a second copy

An external SSD can provide a second physical copy of selected photos or videos after you export them from the phone. It is useful when the cloud account is full, when you want an offline archive, or when you need a copy independent of a single online account.

  • It does not watch phone folders or perform automatic selective backup.
  • You must choose and transfer the files yourself.
  • Connector, adapter, power, and file-transfer compatibility vary by phone and drive, so confirm those requirements for your devices before buying hardware.
  • Keep the drive disconnected when it is not being used for copying if you want protection from accidental deletion or a device problem.

For valuable images, the safest practical arrangement is to verify the cloud copy or the exported archive before deleting the phone’s original. A second copy is an addition to selective backup, not a replacement for checking whether the first copy completed.

Audit the setup after apps and phone changes

Selective backup is easy to misconfigure after installing an app that creates a new media folder. On Android, return to Photos settings → Backup → Back up device folders and scan the list again. Confirm that the broad all-folders option still has the state you intended and that each named folder has the correct toggle.

Do the same after moving files between folders, restoring a phone, or signing into a different Google Account. A file moved from an included folder to an excluded one may no longer follow the protection you expected. Conversely, a file copied into an included folder can become eligible for backup even if it began elsewhere.

On iPhone, keep a simple record of the groups you selected if the set matters. Because the documented process is manual, later additions are not automatically part of the earlier selection. Recheck the item status after each batch rather than assuming that a previous batch establishes a continuing folder rule.

Troubleshoot the common failure points

A new folder is uploading even though you did not select it

On Android, inspect Photos settings → Backup → Back up device folders and look for the Back up all device folders option. When that broad option is on, new device folders can be included automatically. Turn it off if you need a fixed list, then review each individual folder switch.

A selected Android folder has not finished

Check the app’s overall backup progress and the status of individual files. Confirm that the correct Google Account is active and that the account has free storage. Photos, Drive, and Gmail draw from the same Google Account storage pool, so activity in another service can prevent new uploads.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

An iPhone selection is still pending

Leave Google Photos open and connect the iPhone to power, as Google recommends. A large upload or a weak connection can extend the process. Recheck the individual item’s status rather than assuming that tapping Back up finished instantly.

The cloud copy is present, but the wrong account is open

Before removing local files, open the profile menu and confirm the signed-in account. Then verify representative items in that account. A completed upload to an unintended account does not protect the library you meant to preserve.

You want folders on iPhone, but only item selection is available

The documented Google Photos workflow for iPhone uses one item or a multi-selected group. Use that process for a limited set, or use an export to external storage for a separate archive. iCloud Photos remains a whole-library synchronization service rather than a folder-selection tool.

A safe workflow before deleting phone originals

  1. Define the scope. On Android, list the folders that should be included and excluded. On iPhone, mark the specific photos and videos or prepare an export set.
  2. Check the destination. Confirm the active Google Account, available shared storage, or the capacity and compatibility of the external drive.
  3. Start the backup. Use Android’s folder switches, Google Photos’ iPhone selection commands, or your manual export process.
  4. Wait for completion. Keep the iPhone app open and plugged in when following Google’s recommendation, and allow large uploads time to finish.
  5. Verify samples and important files. Check status for individual items and open the copies from the destination account or archive.
  6. Only then remove local files. If verification fails, keep the originals and resolve storage, account, connection, or selection problems first.

This sequence separates configuration from confirmation. A backup rule can be correct while an account is full, an upload is pending, or the wrong account is selected.

Which option should you use?

Choose Google Photos on Android when folder automation matters

This is the only method in the documented workflows that lets you turn backup on or off for individual device folders. It suits a phone where Camera images should be protected but screenshots or downloads should remain local. Review the all-folders setting whenever you need a tightly controlled list.

Choose manual Google Photos selection on iPhone when the set is small or changing

This works when you want to send a defined group without treating the entire library as a backup set. It requires repeating the selection for later additions and verifying completion, especially for large uploads.

Choose iCloud Photos when complete-library synchronization is the goal

Its design is to upload every photo and video and synchronize the library across devices. That convenience is incompatible with excluding only certain folders from the iCloud Photos library.

Add an external SSD when you need a separate physical copy

Use it after exporting selected files, not as an automatic folder-backup service. It provides independence from a cloud account but requires manual transfers and compatible hardware.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Final checks

  • Android: confirm the individual device-folder switches and the state of Back up all device folders.
  • iPhone with Google Photos: confirm every selected item reports a completed backup.
  • iCloud Photos: expect whole-library upload and synchronization, not folder filtering.
  • Any cloud method: check the active account and shared storage before deleting originals.
  • Any archive method: keep the local files until you can open and verify the exported copy.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I back up only my Camera folder on Android?

Yes. In Google Photos, open Photos settings, choose Backup, then Back up device folders. Turn on Camera and turn off folders you do not want included. Also check that Back up all device folders is off if you want a fixed, limited list.

Can I keep screenshots out of Google Photos?

On Android, leave the Screenshots folder switch off and review the all-device-folders setting. On iPhone, select only the photos and videos you want to back up; the documented workflow does not provide an automatic Screenshots-folder rule.

Will a new Android folder be backed up automatically?

It can be if Back up all device folders is enabled. That setting includes photos in new device folders automatically, so disable it and review individual folder toggles when strict control matters.

Does iCloud Photos let me exclude one folder?

No. Apple describes iCloud Photos as uploading every photo and video and synchronizing the library. It is designed for whole-library access, not selective folder filtering.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How do I know it is safe to delete a phone original?

Confirm the item’s completed backup status, verify that the intended Google Account is active, check that shared storage is available, and open representative copies in the cloud or exported archive. Keep the original if any check is uncertain.

Can an external SSD automatically back up selected phone folders?

No. An SSD is a manual archive destination. You must export or transfer the chosen files, and connector, adapter, power, and file-transfer compatibility depend on the phone and drive.

The Bottom Line

Use Google Photos on Android when you need automatic control over individual device folders. On iPhone, Google Photos supports manually selecting photos or videos, while iCloud Photos uploads and syncs the entire library. Whatever method you choose, verify item status, the correct account, and available storage before deleting local originals; an external SSD can add a separate physical copy but does not automate selective folder backup.
