How to Back Up Saves and Game Files on an ANBERNIC Handheld

There is no single save folder or backup shortcut shared by every ANBERNIC handheld. The right method depends on your exact model, its operating system or firmware, and whether the game runs in RetroArch or a standalone emulator. Before changing a microSD card, reflashing firmware, or moving to another device, identify those details and make a separate copy of the files you want to keep.

Know which data you need to preserve

“Save” can mean different things on a handheld. A game’s ordinary in-game save, an emulator save state, the game files themselves, screenshots, and the device’s settings are separate kinds of data. One backup method may capture one kind without capturing the others. Decide what you need to recover before you start copying.

In-game saves

An in-game save is created through the game’s own save system, such as saving at a designated point or using an in-game menu. AmberELEC’s Getting Started guide says these saves work as they would in the original game. They are usually the best progress file to retain when you expect to change emulators or firmware, though you should still test a copy before relying on it.

These files may be stored separately from the game file and separately from save states. A game can therefore appear in your library and launch normally while its progress is missing. Include the ordinary save files in your copy even if you primarily use states.

Save states

A save state captures the emulator’s current state and is created or loaded through the emulator, often through RetroArch’s Quick Menu or assigned hotkeys. It can preserve a moment that the game’s own save system cannot, but it is more closely tied to the emulator, core, game version, and configuration. The available documentation does not establish that a state will work across different cores or firmware, so do not treat it as a substitute for an in-game save.

AmberELEC documents SELECT + R1 to save a state and SELECT + L1 to load one in its setup. Those are AmberELEC-specific examples, not universal ANBERNIC controls. Check your own firmware’s control map before assuming that a button combination creates a backup.

Game files and device settings

Game files, often called ROMs, are separate from progress files. A copy of the games partition can preserve the files stored there, but it does not necessarily include settings held elsewhere. Conversely, a settings or identity archive is not a complete copy of your games and saves.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Settings can include EmulationStation preferences, network details, core configurations, controller mappings, and other firmware-specific choices. Screenshots and artwork may also live in their own folders. Decide whether you need progress only, game files too, or a broader device backup before starting.

Identify your model, firmware, and emulator first

Write down the handheld model and the operating system or firmware currently installed. Then determine whether the game uses RetroArch or a standalone emulator. These details matter because different software can store its saves and states in different locations, even on the same device. A folder path documented for one system should not be assumed to apply to another model, firmware version, or emulator configuration.

If you are unsure which emulator is running a game, check the game’s launch or information menu and the installed system’s documentation. For RetroArch, inspect its save-file and save-state directory settings rather than assuming a standard folder. For a standalone emulator, consult that emulator’s own settings or documentation.

This identification step prevents two common mistakes: copying a similarly named but unused folder, and restoring a valid file into a directory the destination emulator never checks. Note the core name as well as the console name when using RetroArch, because muOS and other systems can organize files by core.

Choose a backup method

Method What it can preserve Effort and main risk
Copy files from the microSD card to a computer Selected saves and states, game files, or a larger partition copy, depending on what you copy Usually the simplest independent copy. You must identify the correct files and keep the original card unchanged until the copy is checked.
Firmware-specific identity or device backup Settings and other items included by that firmware’s backup feature Useful before a firmware change, but its scope is limited to what the feature documents. It may not include the games partition or every save.
Configured cloud sync or backup Files covered by the selected service and configuration, such as RetroArch saves and states or AmberELEC backup categories Requires setup and a reliable connection. Sync settings, conflicting edits, or a quit at the wrong time can affect what reaches the cloud.

A removable-card copy is a good baseline before a destructive change because it gives you a separate copy that you can inspect. Cloud sync can be an additional convenience, but it should not be your only backup until you have confirmed that it contains the expected files and know how conflicts and deletions are handled.

The options differ in scope. A save-only copy is quick but will not replace missing game files. A games-partition copy is broader but takes more storage and time. An identity archive is useful for settings but is not a complete card image. Cloud tools reduce repeated manual copying, yet introduce account setup, network, conflict, and deletion considerations.

Make a manual copy before changing the card or firmware

  1. Exit the game cleanly. Save through the game or emulator, then leave the game and allow the device time to finish writing. If you are using RetroArch Cloud Sync, close the content and return to RetroArch’s main menu before quitting; its documentation warns that quitting while content is still running may skip synchronization.
  2. Connect the card or device to a computer. AmberELEC’s Getting Started guide describes connecting the stock SD card to a computer, typically using a USB card reader or adapter. Choose a reader that fits your computer’s available port. A computer with USB-C may need a USB-C reader or a suitable adapter, while another computer may accept a standard USB-A reader. If you use a network file browser or transfer feature instead, follow the instructions for your installed firmware.
  3. Locate the right files for your setup. Use the firmware and emulator’s documentation or settings to find in-game saves and states. If you are preparing to reformat or reflash, identify the game-data partition as well. Do not assume that copying one visible folder preserves every category.
  4. Copy to a separate destination. Copy the selected save files, state files, configuration you need, and game files or partition data to your computer or another supported storage destination. Keep the folder structure intact where possible so files are easier to restore to the corresponding software. Do not move files off the card as your only action; make a copy so the original remains available.
  5. Check the copy before making changes. Confirm that the copied folders contain the expected files and that the copy completed. Compare the destination’s folder structure with the card, and look for the particular game or console folders you intended to preserve. Keep the original card untouched until you have checked the backup. If practical, test a copied save or state on the device before relying on it for a migration.
  6. Only then reformat, replace, or reflash. Make sure you have a separate copy of anything you intend to restore. A settings archive does not replace a game-data copy, and a cloud sync is not proof that every desired file was uploaded.

If your computer offers a safely eject option, use it before removing the card. This reduces the chance that a final write or directory update is still pending. After ejecting, label the backup with the handheld model, firmware, emulator or core, and date so you can identify it later.

Example save locations for the RG35XX Pro

The paths below are examples listed in the Retro Handhelds RG35XX Pro Setup Guide. They are limited to that device and guide’s software examples; they are not guaranteed paths for other ANBERNIC models, firmware versions, or customized emulator settings.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
RG35XX Pro software and data type Example path
Stock firmware, standalone emulator saves mnt/mmc/save
Stock firmware, RetroArch saves mnt/mmc/saves_RA
Stock firmware, RetroArch save states mnt/mmc/states_RA
KNULLI saves userdata/saves/[console]
muOS save files MUOS/save/file/[core]
muOS save states MUOS/save/state/[core]
ROCKNIX saves /storage/roms/saves/
ROCKNIX save states /storage/roms/savestates

The bracketed parts in the KNULLI and muOS examples represent organization by console or core in that guide; they are not literal folder names to copy blindly. If the files are not at the listed location, check the installed system’s own settings and documentation. Your configuration may use a different directory.

These examples also show why a universal “ANBERNIC save folder” does not exist. Stock firmware separates standalone and RetroArch data, while muOS separates files from states and organizes them by core. ROCKNIX uses its own ROMs hierarchy. Before restoring, reproduce the destination system’s expected organization rather than simply dropping every file into the first folder that looks similar.

Use AmberELEC’s documented backup steps when reflashing AmberELEC

AmberELEC documents a specific procedure that separates its identity settings from the game-data partition. This is an AmberELEC example, not a general reflash recipe for every ANBERNIC operating system.

  1. Back up Identity. AmberELEC’s Getting to Know AmberELEC guide says its Backup Identity feature preserves EmulationStation settings, network details, and core configurations. The resulting archive is named identity.tar.gz and is placed under /storage/roms/backup.
  2. Copy the Games partition separately. Before formatting, make a separate copy of the Games partition as directed by AmberELEC. The identity archive is not a replacement for this partition copy.
  3. Reflash and boot the new card. Follow AmberELEC’s own reflash procedure for the version and device you are using.
  4. Restore the Games partition. After booting the newly flashed card, restore the partition copy according to AmberELEC’s procedure. Keep the separate identity archive available for the corresponding settings restore.

For a different firmware, follow that project’s documented backup and restore procedure. Partition names, locations, and included settings may differ, so do not transfer AmberELEC’s paths or sequence to another system without confirmation.

Keep the identity archive and games-partition copy together in a clearly named backup folder. They serve different purposes during recovery: one restores documented AmberELEC settings, while the other preserves the game data that the reflash process may otherwise erase or replace.

Configure cloud sync carefully

RetroArch Cloud Sync

Libretro’s RetroArch Cloud Sync documentation, updated August 23, 2026, describes synchronizing save files such as .srm files and save states. Documented backends include WebDAV, iCloud, and iCloud Drive; availability varies by platform and backend. Cloud sync is a RetroArch feature that needs configuration, not a universal feature built into every ANBERNIC handheld.

When adding another device, make its save and state directory organization match the existing device. The documentation warns that mismatched sorting settings can prevent correct merging. Close the running content and return to RetroArch’s main menu before quitting so the latest files can sync.

Pay attention to conflict and deletion behavior. RetroArch logs conflicting changes rather than automatically overwriting them. With Destructive Cloud Sync turned off, files that would otherwise be deleted or overwritten are backed up locally. That protection is useful, but it does not remove the need to review conflicts or verify which version of a save you want to keep. Avoid making simultaneous changes to the same progress file on two devices; let one device finish synchronizing before starting the other.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Cloud sync is best treated as an additional recovery path, not permission to erase the local copy immediately. Confirm that the expected save and state files appear in the service, check any conflict log, and keep a manual copy on a computer or spare supported card. A cloud account can fail to help if the wrong directory is selected or if the handheld quits before synchronization completes.

AmberELEC’s rclone backup option

AmberELEC separately documents an rclone-based tool for backing up and restoring saves, states, screenshots, and device backup. Its setup is described as intermediate or advanced, and initial cloud authorization is performed on a computer. Treat this as a firmware-specific option: it is not evidence that the same tool or workflow is available on every ANBERNIC system.

Because this workflow covers several categories, verify which categories are enabled and where the restore operation places them. Do not assume that an AmberELEC rclone configuration can be copied unchanged to stock firmware, KNULLI, muOS, ROCKNIX, or another handheld.

If a game will not save

First distinguish a failed in-game save from a failed save state. Try the method appropriate to the game and emulator, and do not assume that a hotkey documented for another handheld will work on yours. If an in-game save reports success but disappears after restarting, make a manual copy of the current files before experimenting with settings or reflashing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

ANBERNIC Support’s “Instant Archive Issue of RG552,” modified April 12, 2024, gives an RG552-specific recovery instruction: “When you encounter a problem with game saving failure while playing the game, you can’t use the emulator’s own archive method, you need to use instant archive to save the game.” The article identifies F+R1 as the RG552 instant-save operation. This shortcut is documented for the RG552 only; owners of other models should consult the manual or support information for their exact model rather than trying to generalize it.

Once a recovery operation succeeds, exit normally and verify that the resulting file exists in the expected location. Then copy it to a computer. A recovery shortcut is useful for that model’s immediate problem, but it is not a substitute for a repeatable backup routine.

Moving saves to another device or firmware

A migration has more variables than a same-device restore. The destination may use a different operating system, directory layout, RetroArch core, or standalone emulator. Ordinary in-game saves are generally the safer starting point, but they still need to be placed where the destination emulator expects them. Save states can depend heavily on the original emulator and core, so retain them as an extra possibility rather than your only migration plan.

Copy the original files first, then make a working copy for the destination. Preserve the original backup unchanged. Place the working copy into the destination’s documented save directory, launch the matching game, and verify the progress. If the state fails to load, try the ordinary in-game save instead. Do not delete the original simply because one attempted restore was unsuccessful.

Restore and verify before trusting the backup

A file being present on a computer or in cloud storage does not by itself prove that the handheld can use it. Restore to the matching system and emulator where possible, then check that the game recognizes the save. If the restore is part of a firmware or device change, test it before deleting the untouched original copy.

  • Check that the intended game, save file, and, if needed, state file were copied, not just the containing folder name.
  • Keep ordinary in-game saves as well as states when both matter; a state may depend more heavily on the emulator and core configuration.
  • Preserve the directory organization expected by the destination system, and confirm the emulator’s configured save and state directories.
  • For a cloud workflow, confirm that synchronization completed and inspect conflict logs or local backups when a file was changed, overwritten, or deleted.
  • Retain the original card or an untouched copy until the restored progress and game files have been checked on the target device.
  • After verification, maintain at least one separate copy that is not being edited by the handheld. This gives you a known-good point if a later sync or card failure damages the working files.

Common pitfalls to avoid

  • Assuming every ANBERNIC uses the same path. Model, firmware, emulator, and core all affect storage locations.
  • Backing up only ROMs. Game files do not automatically include ordinary saves or save states.
  • Backing up only an identity archive. AmberELEC’s identity archive preserves documented settings, not the separate Games partition.
  • Copying while a game is still running. The newest save may not have finished writing, and RetroArch Cloud Sync may skip synchronization if content is still open when you quit.
  • Relying on a shortcut from another model. F+R1 is documented for the RG552 instant-archive procedure, not as a universal ANBERNIC command.
  • Restoring every file into an arbitrary folder. Keep the destination’s expected console, core, save, and state organization.
  • Testing only the file listing. Open the game and confirm that progress loads before discarding the original card or backup.
  • Editing the same save on two devices at once. Allow one cloud-sync cycle to finish before using the other device, and review conflicts instead of assuming the newest-looking file is correct.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where are ANBERNIC save files stored?

There is no universal location. Check the exact model, firmware, and emulator first. For example, an RG35XX Pro guide lists mnt/mmc/save for stock standalone saves, mnt/mmc/saves_RA for stock RetroArch saves, MUOS/save/file/[core] for muOS, and /storage/roms/saves/ for ROCKNIX. Treat those as RG35XX Pro examples only.

What is the difference between an in-game save and a save state?

An in-game save uses the game’s original save system. A save state captures the emulator at a particular moment through RetroArch or another emulator. Keep both when they matter, because save states can depend on the emulator, core, and configuration and may not transfer cleanly.

Do I need to back up the games partition before reflashing?

Yes, if you want to retain the game files stored there. AmberELEC specifically directs users to copy the Games partition separately from its Identity archive. A settings archive is not a complete game-data backup.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I use one ANBERNIC save path on every firmware?

No. Stock firmware, KNULLI, muOS, ROCKNIX, AmberELEC, RetroArch, and standalone emulators can use different directories. Use the installed software’s settings or documentation for the destination system.

Can RetroArch cloud sync replace a manual backup?

It can provide an additional copy of supported saves and states, but verify that directory organization matches, synchronization completes, and conflicts are understood. Keep a separate manual copy until the cloud restore has been tested.

What should I do if a game will not save?

Distinguish an in-game save problem from a state problem and consult the exact model’s support instructions. ANBERNIC’s RG552 support article documents F+R1 as that model’s instant-archive operation; it does not establish the same shortcut for other handhelds.

Will a save state work after changing firmware or cores?

It may not. The documented material does not establish cross-core or cross-firmware compatibility. Preserve and test the ordinary in-game save as well, and keep the original state backup untouched.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

What equipment do I need for a manual backup?

A computer and a compatible microSD card reader or USB adapter are usually sufficient for a removable-card copy. Choose a reader that matches the computer’s available port. Network transfer is another possibility when your firmware supports it.

The Bottom Line

Identify the exact ANBERNIC model, firmware, and emulator before looking for files. Exit cleanly, copy saves, states, and game data to a separate destination, and keep the original card unchanged until you verify the copy. Use firmware-specific procedures such as AmberELEC’s separate Identity and Games-partition backups, and treat cloud sync or model-specific shortcuts as supplements rather than universal replacements for a tested manual backup.
