On a supported Samsung device, Samsung says photos already uploaded through Google Photos backup will not be duplicated when you also enable Gallery sync. To set it up safely, choose the intended Google Account, review which folders each app backs up, and remember that deleting a synced item in either app can delete it from both.
Before you turn on Gallery sync
Samsung Gallery sync and Google Photos backup have separate controls. Gallery sync links selected Samsung Gallery media to your Google Account; Google Photos backup has its own account and device-folder settings. Review both so you know which media is included.

- Check eligibility: Google lists a supported Samsung device running Android 13 or higher and a personal Google Account as requirements. Supervised Google Accounts and Google Workspace accounts are not eligible. Availability can vary by model, account type, and region. - Confirm the account: Make sure you will connect Gallery to the Google Account where you want the photos stored.
- Review the consequences: Synced media uses Google Account storage and is backed up in original quality. Deleting synced media in either app can remove it from both apps and the cloud. Google Photos Help.
Turn on Samsung Gallery sync
- Open Samsung Gallery on your phone or tablet.
- Tap Menu > Settings > Sync photos and videos.
- Follow the prompts to select and authorize the Google Account. This connects Gallery Cloud Sync to that account.
- Review the albums and local folders selected for syncing. Google gives Downloads and Screenshots as examples of device folders; you can stop syncing the main camera roll while keeping selected local folders in sync.
Google’s guidance describes the account connection and folder selection in Sync your Samsung Gallery with your Google Account. Menu names and availability may differ by device, app version, account, or region.

Check Google Photos backup settings separately
Turning on Gallery sync does not replace the controls for Google Photos backup. In Google Photos, check the active account and the folders that the app backs up:

- Open Google Photos and tap your profile picture > Photos settings > Backup.
- Confirm the backup account is the one you intend to use.
- Open Back up device folders and review the folder-by-folder selections. Google Photos can also be set to back up all device folders automatically.

Why this should avoid duplicate uploads—and what it does not guarantee
Samsung’s support guidance states: “Photos already uploaded via Google Photos backup will not be duplicated if you also enable Gallery sync.” That is Samsung’s stated behavior for photos already uploaded through Google Photos backup, rather than a guarantee that every visually similar file in every folder will be merged. If you see what looks like an extra item, first check the Google Account, the selected Gallery albums and device folders, and each app’s backup status. It may be an edited version rather than a duplicate: Google says an original and its edited version can both appear in the library. Google Photos Help.

What sync changes in day-to-day use
- Storage: Gallery-synced media is stored in the Google Account in original quality and uses that account’s storage. Google Photos Help.
- Deleting: Deleting a synced photo or video in Samsung Gallery or Google Photos can remove it from both apps and the cloud. Do not delete an item as a test of whether it is backed up. Google Photos Help: Delete photos and videos.
- Turning sync off: New photos stop backing up, while media already backed up remains in the Google Account and accessible in Google Photos. Turning off the Gallery setting does not itself remove that stored media. Google Photos Help.
- Finding features: Gallery-synced media is available for basic viewing and sharing, but may not appear in Memories, live albums, or Search unless it is also backed up through Google Photos.
- Editing: Edits made in Samsung Gallery or Google Photos are saved and backed up; both original and edited versions may appear. Deleting one version does not necessarily delete the other.
- Free up space: Removing local media with Google Photos’ Free up space feature can make those items disappear from local Samsung Gallery albums, even though they remain viewable in Google Photos.

Troubleshoot missing or unexpected photos
- Check the account shown at the top of Google Photos; it should be the account you connected to Gallery and intend to use for backup.
- Open Photos settings > Backup and inspect Back up device folders to see whether the relevant folder is included.
- Check Google Photos’ overall backup status and the status indicator on an individual photo or video. Google documents messages such as “Backup complete.”
- To inspect folders stored on the device, go to Collections > On this device in Google Photos.
- If two versions look alike, consider whether one is an edited copy; the original and edited version may both appear.
Google’s instructions for backup status and device folders are in its Android backup help. Because synced deletions can propagate between Gallery, Google Photos, and cloud storage, avoid deleting an item to troubleshoot it.
