A save file records progress; it is not a game license. On PS4, you can copy individual saves to a USB drive or PlayStation Plus cloud storage. On PS5, individual saves for PS5-native games cannot be copied to USB, so use cloud storage or include them in a full-console USB backup. A PS5 can copy saves for PS4 games to USB. Before a subscription-catalog departure, make a fresh copy, compare its timestamp with the console save, and check the specific title’s current entitlement. Keeping the save does not by itself guarantee continued access after a catalog change.
What to back up before a game leaves
There are two separate things to preserve:
- Progress data: your saved games, settings and checkpoints.
- Access: the license or subscription entitlement that lets the console start the game.
Sony’s support instructions explain how to copy and restore saved data, but they do not establish one universal outcome for every game removed from a subscription catalog, region, subscription state or edition. Check the title’s current entitlement in your account and store the save independently. If the game is later redownloaded, purchased or otherwise available to your account, the preserved save can be useful; it cannot create an entitlement that has expired.

Choose the right backup method
| Save type and console | Individual USB copy | PlayStation Plus cloud | Full-console USB backup | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| PS4 game on PS4 | Yes | Yes, with PlayStation Plus | Yes | Full restore replaces console data |
| PS5-native game on PS5 | No | Yes, with PlayStation Plus | Yes | A full restore erases data on the PS5 |
| PS4 game running on PS5 | Yes, through the PS4 saved-data menu | Yes, with PlayStation Plus | Yes | USB option applies to the PS4 save, not a PS5-native save |
| Streamed PlayStation Plus game | Not as a normal console save export | Use online storage as supported | Not a substitute for the service’s streamed-save handling | Streamed and downloaded versions store saves differently |
For a single PS4 save, USB is the most portable local copy. Cloud storage is convenient and can move a save between compatible consoles, but it depends on an active PlayStation Plus entitlement and a successful upload. A full backup is broader and useful for disaster recovery, yet restoring it is an all-console operation rather than a quick save-file import.
Back up an individual PS4 save to USB
Copy the save from a PS4
- Connect a USB storage device to the PS4.
- Open Settings > Application Saved Data Management > Saved Data in System Storage > Copy to USB Storage Device.
- Select the game. Choose the save file or files you want to preserve.
- Select Copy and wait for the transfer to finish before removing the drive.
The console shows file dates. Compare those dates with the last time you played so you do not preserve an older checkpoint by mistake. If a game has several profiles or save slots, select each one that matters; copying one file does not automatically copy every file for that title.

Restore a PS4 save from USB
- Connect the drive to the PS4 containing the game.
- Go to Settings > Application Saved Data Management > Saved Data on USB Storage Device > Copy to System Storage.
- Select the game and the save file to restore.
- Review the timestamps and overwrite warning. Cancel if the USB copy is older than the save already on the console.
This workflow is suited to moving one game between PS4 consoles or keeping an offline archive. It does not preserve the game installation or license; those must be restored or obtained separately.
Back up PS4 saves with PlayStation Plus cloud storage
Upload a current save
PlayStation Plus is required for cloud storage. On PS4, open Settings > Application Data Management > Saved Data in System Storage > Upload to Online Storage. Select the game and files, then start the upload. To retrieve a copy later, use Saved Data in Online Storage > Download to System Storage.
As stated in Sony’s current support guidance, cloud storage provides up to 100 GB for PS4 saved data. PS4 cloud storage also has a limit of 1,000 saved-data files. These service limits can change, so check the storage indicator before an important upload. A full cloud quota or file-count limit can prevent the newest save from being copied.
Check automatic upload and timestamps
- Confirm that automatic upload is enabled for the user account that owns the saves.
- Open the cloud-save controls and check the last synchronization time.
- Upload manually immediately before the game leaves, even if automatic upload is normally enabled.
- Compare the cloud timestamp with the local file before downloading or overwriting anything.
Cloud storage is convenient when you have more than one console, but it is account-dependent. Sign in with the same PlayStation Network account, maintain the required PlayStation Plus access, and avoid treating a successful login as proof that the newest file uploaded.

Make a full PS4 console backup
Use a full backup when you want broader recovery protection, not merely one game’s save. First synchronize trophies, because trophies are handled separately from saved data. Prepare a USB drive formatted as FAT32 or exFAT. The drive must have at least twice the storage space used by the backup file; there is no single recommended capacity without knowing how much data is on your PS4.
- Connect the correctly formatted USB drive.
- Open Settings > System > Back Up and Restore > Back Up.
- Select the data categories to include, making sure saved data is selected.
- Start the backup and leave the console connected until it reports completion.
Restoring a PS4 full backup erases data currently on the console. Preserve any newer saves, captures or user data made after the backup before choosing the restore command. Check the backup date and the selected USB device; this is a console-recovery workflow, not a selective import of one save.
Back up PS5-native game saves
Use PlayStation Plus cloud storage
For a game built for PS5, cloud storage is the normal selective backup method. Open Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings > Saved Data (PS5), then configure Sync Saved Data > Auto-Sync Saved Data or use the upload controls to send the latest file to online storage.

Sony states: You can’t copy PS5 saved data from your PS5 console to a USB drive.
This refers to PS5 saved data and an individual USB copy. A standard USB flash-drive export of one PS5-native save is therefore not an available fallback. Sony’s current cloud guidance lists up to 100 GB of PS5 saved data for PlayStation Plus storage; verify the service’s limits and the sync status before relying on it.

Verify a PS5 cloud copy
- Close the game normally so its most recent checkpoint is written.
- Open the PS5 saved-data settings and check the last synchronization time.
- Use the upload option if the timestamp is not recent or automatic sync was disabled.
- On another PS5, sign into the same account, open the PS5 saved-data controls and download the cloud file only after comparing dates.
Do not delete the local save to force a sync. If the console offers a choice between local and cloud versions, keep the newer timestamp and make a separate decision about the older copy.
Back up a PS5 console to USB
A PS5 full-console backup can include PS5 saved data when individual USB export is unavailable. Use the console’s backup function rather than formatting a drive as game extended storage. The USB extended-storage drive used to install games is formatted differently and cannot serve as the PS5 backup device at the same time.
- Prepare a USB drive that the PS5 accepts for console backup.
- Open the PS5 system backup settings and select the full-console backup option.
- Include saved data and wait for the backup to complete.
- Label the drive with the backup date and keep it disconnected when not in use.
Restoring a PS5 full backup erases data saved on the console. Copy or synchronize anything newer first, then confirm that the selected backup is the one you intend to restore. A full restore is appropriate after a major failure or console replacement; it is excessive if your only goal is to move one save and you have a working cloud copy.

- Open Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings.
- Select Saved Data (PS4).
- Choose Upload or Delete from Console Storage > Copy to USB Drive.
- Select the game and save files, then choose Copy.
This creates a local USB copy of the PS4-format save. It does not change a PS5-native save into a USB-compatible file, and it does not copy the game’s license or installation. When moving the save to another console, verify that you are launching the compatible PS4 edition and using the same user account where required.
Understand streamed versus downloaded saves
PlayStation Plus game streaming and downloading do not store progress in exactly the same place. Sony explains that saves for streamed games are stored by PlayStation, while saves for downloaded games are stored on the console. Moving between those forms uses cloud storage.
- For a streamed game, use the service’s option to copy the streamed save to online storage.
- For a downloaded game, upload the console save to online storage, then download it when needed on the other form.
- Check timestamps after each transfer; a streamed session that ended before its final synchronization may not match the newest local progress.
This distinction matters when a catalog title is available for streaming but no longer downloadable, or when you reinstall a title after previously playing it through streaming. Cloud storage is the bridge; a USB copy of a PS5-native save is not.

Checklist before a game disappears
- Identify the version. Determine whether you played the PS4 version, the PS5-native version or a streamed copy.
- Finish a clean save. Reach a safe point, save manually if the game supports it, and exit to the dashboard.
- Check entitlement. Look at the game’s store or subscription status for your account and region. A preserved save does not prove that the title will remain launchable.
- Choose the compatible copy. Use PS4 USB, PS4 or PS5 cloud storage, or a full-console backup according to the table above.
- Confirm the timestamp. Compare the console file with the USB or cloud copy before deleting, replacing or restoring anything.
- Keep two forms when the progress is valuable. For example, retain a PS4 USB copy plus a cloud copy, or a PS5 cloud copy plus a dated full-console backup.
- Record the account and edition. Note the PlayStation Network account, game edition and region so a future reinstall uses the compatible product.
Common mistakes and how to recover
“I copied the save, so I can still play the game.”
A save is not a license. If a catalog entitlement ends, the console may require a purchase, another valid entitlement or a still-active subscription before the game starts. Verify the specific title rather than assuming every catalog removal behaves the same way.

“My PS5 USB drive does not show a PS5 save.”
That is expected for an individual PS5-native save. Use PlayStation Plus cloud storage or a PS5 full-console backup. If the game is a PS4 title running on PS5, switch to Saved Data (PS4) and use Copy to USB Drive.
“The restored save is older than my latest progress.”
Stop overwriting files and compare dates in both locations. An automatic cloud upload may have failed, or the USB copy may have been made before the final session. Keep the newer file, then make a fresh backup before trying another restore.
“The cloud copy is missing.”
Confirm that the console used the same account, that PlayStation Plus cloud storage was available, and that the upload completed. Check whether the game was streamed or downloaded, since the original save location differs. A full cloud quota or the PS4 1,000-file limit can also prevent the newest file from uploading.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →“The full restore would erase my current console.”
That warning is significant. PS4 and PS5 full-console restores erase data on the target console. Copy newer saves and other irreplaceable data elsewhere first, and use a full restore only when its broad replacement behavior is acceptable.
Which method should you use?
| Situation | Best first choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| One PS4 save on a PS4 | USB copy, with cloud as a second copy | USB is selective and portable; cloud adds account-based redundancy. |
| One PS5-native save | PlayStation Plus cloud upload | Individual USB export is not supported. |
| Several PS5 games or a failing console | Full-console USB backup plus cloud sync | It covers more data, but restoration replaces the console contents. |
| PS4 game played on PS5 | Saved Data (PS4) USB copy or cloud upload | The PS4 save format has a local USB option on PS5. |
| Streamed PlayStation Plus game | Copy the streamed save to online storage | Streaming stores the save with PlayStation rather than as a normal console file. |
Use the least destructive method that meets your goal: an individual copy for one game, cloud synchronization for cross-console convenience, and a full backup for complete recovery. In every case, the newest verified timestamp matters more than the storage medium.
