How to Back Up PS2 Discs for Use With a PS2 Emulator

To use a physical PlayStation 2 game in an emulator, create a sector-accurate image of the disc with an optical drive that can read its media (DVD or CD), then verify that image in PCSX2. The game image is only one part of setup: PCSX2 also requires a PlayStation 2 BIOS dumped separately from a console you own.

Use the procedure for your operating system and disc type. Windows has graphical workflows with Media Preservation Frontend (MPF) or ImgBurn; macOS and Linux have their own DVD and CD methods. A slow, verified read is preferable to a fast image that freezes during play.

What a PS2 disc backup actually is

A PS2 backup for emulation is a computer-readable image file containing the contents and structure of your physical game disc. You insert the original disc into a compatible optical drive, read it from start to finish, and save the result as an image that PCSX2 can mount or scan. The process does not write to or alter the optical disc; PCSX2 describes its dumping process as straightforward and non-destructive.

PlayStation 2 software was released on both CDs and DVDs. Most larger games use DVDs, and some use DVD-9 dual-layer media. A drive that reads ordinary single-layer DVDs is not automatically suitable for every PS2 release, so check DVD, CD and DVD-9 support before buying or borrowing hardware.

Amicool External DVD Drive USB 3.0 USB C CD Burner CD/DVD +/-RW Optical Drive, Slim Portable DVD Player CD ROM Rewriter Writer Reader for Laptop Desktop PC Windows 11/10/8/7 MacBook Mac Linux OS Apple
  • 【PLUG & PLAY – EASY CONNECTION】 Simply connect the Amicool External DVD Drive to your computer’s USB or Type-C port, and it will usually be detected right away without the need for extra drivers. For stable operation and sufficient power, we recommend connecting it directly to a USB port on your computer (for desktops, use a rear motherboard port) and avoiding USB hubs or extension cables. This user-friendly design ensures quick setup for both beginners and professionals.
  • 【FAST & STABLE DATA TRANSMISSION】 Featuring dual interfaces (USB 3.0 and Type-C), this optical drive supports data transfer speeds up to 5Gbps. To ensure a reliable connection, please connect it directly to your computer. The drive supports multiple disc formats such as DVD+R, DVD-R, CD-R, and CD-RW. Please note: It does NOT support DVD-RAM, Blu-ray (BD) discs, or certain proprietary formats. Maximum DVD read speed is 8x, and maximum CD read/write speed is 24x.
  • 【UNIVERSAL COMPATIBILITY】 Compatible with Windows 11 / 10 / 8.1 / 7, Linux, and all macOS (Intel & Apple Silicon) for MacBook Air/Pro, iMac, Mac mini; NOT for iPad/iPhone/Apple TV/ChromeOS; for Mac, insert disc FIRST, connect directly to USB port (use a POWERED USB‑C hub for M1/M2/M3 to avoid insufficient power), and open media with VLC Player (Apple DVD Player not supported). Works with most computers from brands like Apple, Dell, HP, Lenovo, ASUS, Acer, and Samsung. 👉 Important: Designed specifically for computers. It is NOT compatible with TVs, tablets, game consoles (e.g., PlayStation, Xbox), car stereos, or standalone Blu-ray players.
  • 【SLIM & PORTABLE DESIGN – BUILT-IN CABLE, READY TO GO】With an integrated cable design, slim body, and stylish matte finish, this lightweight CD/DVD drive is both durable and portable. Easily slip it into your laptop bag or backpack and use it anytime, anywhere—perfect for business, travel, or home use
  • 【MULTIFUNCTIONAL & RELIABLE OPERATION】 Equipped with intelligent error correction and anti-shock technology, this drive supports reading, writing, and burning discs. If the drive is not recognized or a disc cannot be read, try restarting your computer or testing with a different, standard CD-R or DVD-R disc. The pop-up button and built-in cable design offer convenience and portability. For desktop PCs, connecting to a rear USB port is recommended for optimal power and performance.

The image is not the same thing as the console firmware. A copied game disc does not contain the BIOS that PCSX2 needs to boot games. You must handle the game image and BIOS as two separate setup tasks.

Equipment and files you need

Optical drive

Use an internal or external drive that supports the medium in your game. For a DVD title, confirm DVD reading and, where applicable, DVD-9 dual-layer reading. For a CD title, confirm CD-ROM reading. If your computer has no internal drive, an external USB DVD/CD drive is a practical option; verify that its specifications mention dual-layer DVD support when you need it.

  • A standard optical drive is sufficient when it supports the disc’s DVD or CD format.
  • An external USB connection avoids opening a desktop computer, but the drive still needs operating-system support and a stable USB connection.
  • Do not assume every slim laptop drive reads every dual-layer disc reliably. Test the particular disc and keep the drive’s firmware and operating-system drivers current.

Computer and storage

Have enough free storage for the complete image and temporary files created by your dumping tool. Keep the original disc clean and free of fingerprints. Store the resulting image on a drive with a reliable file system and make a second copy if the image is important; the optical disc remains your original source.

Software

Choose a current version of PCSX2 and follow its official “Dumping Discs” instructions for your operating system. Windows users can use MPF or ImgBurn. macOS and Linux users can use the platform tools described below, including command-line utilities for DVD and CD media.

Choose the correct workflow

Computer Disc Documented approach Important qualification
Windows DVD or CD MPF graphical dump, or ImgBurn’s “Create image file from disc” Set the correct Sony PlayStation 2 media type and CD-ROM/DVD-ROM designation in MPF.
macOS DVD Disk Utility, dd, or another current method in PCSX2’s guide Disk Utility saves a .cdr; rename the extension to .iso for PCSX2.
macOS CD CD-specific method such as cdrdao Do not apply the DVD procedure to a CD-based game.
Linux DVD Graphical tools or dd /dev/sr0 is common, not universal; identify your actual device first.
Linux CD CD-specific instructions in PCSX2’s guide Use the CD procedure and verify the resulting image.

Windows: dump with Media Preservation Frontend (MPF)

MPF provides a guided graphical workflow. The labels can change between releases, so use the current PCSX2 documentation for screenshots, supported versions and any updated options.

Supported formats include CD-ROM/R/RW, DVD-ROM/R±RW/R±DL, and VCD. IMPORTANT: Not compatible with ChromeOS, smartphones, tablets, TVs, projectors, vehicles, or Blu-ray/4K discs. Please verify your device type before purchasing
  1. Connect the optical drive, insert the PS2 disc and close any application that tries to play or browse it.
  2. Open MPF and scan for the inserted disc.
  3. Confirm or enter the media identification as Sony PlayStation 2. Select whether the disc is CD-ROM or DVD-ROM, matching the physical game.
  4. Choose an output directory and file name. Use a location with enough free space and a name that identifies the title without special characters that your file system may reject.
  5. Start the dump and leave the drive undisturbed. Reading at a lower speed can take longer but may improve the chance of an exact image.
  6. Wait for MPF to report completion and that it is safe to eject the disc. Eject only after that message.

If MPF reports read errors, clean the disc, try another USB port or cable, and repeat at a lower speed if the tool offers that control. A successful-looking file is not necessarily an exact dump; verify it in PCSX2 before deleting temporary files or putting the original away.

Windows: dump with ImgBurn

ImgBurn’s documented path is shorter, but you still need to select the right drive and output location.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Insert the game disc and open ImgBurn.
  2. Select Create image file from disc.
  3. Choose the optical drive containing the PS2 disc.
  4. Set the destination folder and image file name.
  5. Start the read operation and allow it to finish without using the drive for another task.
  6. Close the program only after it reports that the image was completed successfully, then verify the image in PCSX2.

The official ImgBurn installer has historically offered OpenCandy advertising software. If that offer appears, leave it unchecked. PCSX2’s guide has recommended obtaining ImgBurn through Ninite; check the current official guidance because installer behavior and download recommendations can change.

macOS: DVD-based games

Disk Utility method

Disk Utility can create a sector image from a DVD. PCSX2 notes that misuse of Disk Utility or command-line tools can cause data loss, so double-check every selected volume and destination.

  1. Insert the PS2 DVD and open Disk Utility.
  2. Select the physical disc in the sidebar, not a mounted folder or one of its files.
  3. Choose File > New Image > Image from the volume.
  4. For image format, choose DVD/CD master.
  5. Save the image and wait for the read to finish.
  6. Disk Utility may produce a file with a .cdr extension. Rename only the extension to .iso; PCSX2’s documentation states that the underlying data is identical, while PCSX2 does not support the macOS-only .cdr extension.

Renaming an extension does not convert or recompress the data. If the image cannot be opened, restore the original file name, repeat the dump and check that you selected the physical disc.

Command-line DVD method

The dd utility can read the optical device directly. Device names differ between Macs and macOS releases, so determine the correct device from the current PCSX2 instructions and your system’s disk listing before running a command. Never guess the input device or output path: reversing them can overwrite a disk.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Unmount the disc without ejecting it, run the documented dd command with the correct optical device as input and a new image file as output, then wait for the command to return. Check the resulting file size and verify it in PCSX2. Use cdrdao for a CD-based game rather than treating a CD as a DVD.

Linux: DVD-based games

Graphical tools

Linux offers several graphical disc-imaging utilities. Select the physical optical drive, choose a raw or ISO-style image output when the tool provides that choice, select a destination with adequate free space and let the read complete. Follow PCSX2’s current Linux instructions for the utility you install, because package names and interface labels vary by distribution.

dd method and device safety

Linux commonly exposes an optical drive as /dev/sr0, but that path is not guaranteed. It may be /dev/sr1 or another device on a system with multiple drives. Identify the correct device first, unmount any automatically mounted volume, and use a new output path.

  1. List block devices and optical drives with your distribution’s disk utility or device-listing command.
  2. Confirm which entry corresponds to the inserted PS2 disc. Check the device size and mount points.
  3. Unmount the disc’s mounted volume while leaving the disc in the drive.
  4. Run the documented dd command with the optical device as input and a new ISO file as output. A representative shape is dd if=/dev/sr0 of=ps2-game.iso, but replace both paths only after verifying them for your machine.
  5. Wait for the command to finish, flush pending writes, and check that the output file exists and has a plausible size.
  6. Verify the image in PCSX2 before moving or deleting anything.

Safety warning: In dd, if means input file and of means output file. An incorrect of path can overwrite a hard-drive partition. If you are not certain which device is the optical drive, use a graphical tool or stop and identify it first.

Linux CD games

CD-based PS2 games need the separate CD instructions in PCSX2’s documentation. Do not assume that a DVD-oriented ISO command preserves every CD characteristic. Use the documented CD utility, complete the read, and then perform the same PCSX2 verification step.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

Verify the image before playing

PCSX2 calls a non-identical image a bad dump. A bad dump can appear to work at first and then freeze on a loading screen, fail to boot or show missing data. Verification is therefore part of the backup process, not an optional extra.

  1. Open PCSX2 and add or select the folder containing the new image.
  2. Use PCSX2’s documented dump-verification function for the installed version.
  3. Check the reported result against the expected title and media. Keep the original image unchanged while testing.
  4. If verification fails or the game freezes, make a new dump instead of patching random files in the image.

When a dump fails

  • Lower the read speed. PCSX2 says slower reading can increase the likelihood of an exact copy, although it takes longer.
  • Clean and inspect the disc. Smudges and scratches can produce repeatable read errors.
  • Try another drive. Optical pickups differ in how well they handle damaged or dual-layer media.
  • Check media support. Confirm CD versus DVD and DVD-9 capability rather than assuming the drive supports both.
  • Eliminate connection problems. For USB drives, connect directly to the computer, avoid an unreliable hub and try a different cable or port.
  • Repeat from the original. Do not use a partially copied image as the source for another image.

Configure the separate PS2 BIOS

PCSX2 cannot play games without a BIOS. The BIOS is proprietary console software and is not supplied by the game-disc image. PCSX2 documents dumping the BIOS from a PS2 console using homebrew methods; follow that documentation for the supported procedure and then point PCSX2 to the resulting BIOS files.

Keep the BIOS step separate from disc imaging. A verified game image with no BIOS will not boot, while a BIOS without a game image does not provide the game. PCSX2’s support policy expects users to own a legally obtained game and a BIOS dumped from a PS2 they own. Do not download a BIOS from an unverified website or assume that a disc image includes firmware.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Organize and protect your image files

Use clear names and separate originals

Name images with the game’s title and region if that information matters to your library. Keep the original dump as read-only or in a dedicated archive folder, and use a separate working copy if you experiment with emulator settings. Never overwrite a verified image with an unverified replacement.

Keep at least one additional copy

An image is a large file and can be lost through a failing hard drive, accidental deletion or file-system corruption. A second copy on another physical disk protects against a single-device failure. Optional external storage is useful for this purpose, but it is not required to create the dump.

Record what you did

For each image, note the operating system, drive used, disc type (CD, DVD or DVD-9), tool and verification result. These notes make it easier to repeat a dump if a later drive or file-system problem appears.

Legal considerations

Copyright and anti-circumvention rules differ by country and can depend on the game, the technology used and what you do with the resulting file. PCSX2 tells users to review the law in their own jurisdiction. Owning a physical disc does not automatically make every copying, decryption or distribution method lawful everywhere.

For United States context, a U.S. Copyright Office FAQ says, “Lesson: if you want a backup copy of a lawfully owned computer program, back it up yourself.” The same FAQ warns that unauthorized uploading or downloading of copyrighted works may infringe reproduction or distribution rights. That educational wording is not a ruling that approves every technical method.

U.S. regulation 37 CFR 201.40 contains exemptions with defined works and conditions, including particular motion-picture and institutional contexts. It should not be read as a blanket personal-videogame-disc copying exemption. Do not upload, trade or publicly share your image, and obtain jurisdiction-specific legal advice if the legality of your intended method is uncertain.

Troubleshooting by symptom

Symptom Likely cause Action
The computer does not see the disc Unsupported media, dirty disc, loose connection or failing drive Confirm CD/DVD/DVD-9 support, clean the disc, reconnect the drive and test another disc.
Dump completes but PCSX2 reports a bad image Read error or incomplete sector copy Dump again at a lower speed, try another drive and run verification again.
Game freezes at a loading screen Non-identical image, often called a bad dump Create a fresh verified image; do not rely on a file that merely launches.
macOS image is rejected Image still has the .cdr extension Rename the extension to .iso after using the DVD/CD master format.
dd command risks the wrong disk Unverified device or output path Stop, identify the optical device and destination, and do not run the command until both are certain.
Game image is valid but PCSX2 will not boot it BIOS is missing or not configured Dump and configure the BIOS separately using PCSX2’s official BIOS instructions.

Practical checklist

  • Identify whether the game is CD, DVD or DVD-9.
  • Use an optical drive that explicitly supports that medium.
  • Select the instructions for your operating system; macOS and Linux CD procedures differ from DVD procedures.
  • Use a new destination with enough free space.
  • For command-line tools, verify input and output paths character by character.
  • Let the read finish before ejecting the disc.
  • Verify the image in PCSX2.
  • If verification fails, retry at a lower speed or with another drive.
  • Dump and configure a BIOS separately from the game image.
  • Keep the image private and follow the law where you live.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I make a PS2 image with an ordinary DVD drive?

Yes, if the drive supports the disc’s medium. Confirm CD support for CD games, DVD support for DVD games and DVD-9 dual-layer support for dual-layer titles.

Does the ISO contain the PS2 BIOS?

No. The BIOS is separate proprietary console software and must be dumped from a PS2 console you own using PCSX2’s documented method.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why does a dumped game freeze even though the file was created?

The image may be a non-identical or incomplete dump. Clean the disc, lower the read speed, try another compatible drive and run PCSX2’s verification again.
