Create a verified disc image on a computer with an optical drive that reads the PlayStation 2 disc’s actual media type, then use an image format documented by the PS5SX2 project. Treat CD and DVD dumping as separate procedures, because the PCSX2 documentation does not treat them as interchangeable. A faulty image can cause freezes or loading failures, so verify the dump before troubleshooting anything on the PS5 side.
What you are creating—and what this guide does not cover
A PS2 disc backup for emulator use is normally a disc-image file made by reading the original CD or DVD in a compatible computer optical drive. It is not the same as copying a few visible files from the disc in a file manager, and it is not a procedure for installing software on a PS5.

The PCSX2 project describes PS2 game discs as unencrypted DVDs and CDs that can be dumped with a standard optical disc drive supporting the relevant media. That statement concerns reading the PS2 disc and creating an image. It does not mean that every drive reads every disc equally well, that CD and DVD instructions are interchangeable, or that using the resulting file with PS5 homebrew is authorized by the console maker.
This guide stops at the boundary between disc imaging and PS5 security. It explains how to make and check your own image, what file types PS5SX2 documents, and which prerequisites the project lists. It does not provide instructions for bypassing PS5 authentication, modifying console security, or obtaining games or BIOS files.

Check these requirements before inserting the disc
Identify whether the PS2 release is a CD or DVD
PS2 software was distributed on both CDs and DVDs. Use the instructions for the disc’s actual media type. Do not assume that a PS2 title is a DVD because it is a PS2 game, and do not substitute a DVD-dumping procedure for a CD workflow. The PCSX2 documentation has CD-specific guidance for cases where the ordinary DVD route is not appropriate.
Confirm that the computer can read that media
The computer making the image needs an optical drive that supports the disc format. A drive that reads DVDs but not CDs is not sufficient for a CD-based PS2 release. If the computer has no internal drive, a USB DVD drive that also reads CDs can be a practical option, but check the manufacturer’s specifications for the exact media support before buying or connecting it.
Choose the operating-system instructions
PCSX2 documents graphical and command-line approaches for Windows, macOS, and Linux. The steps and available tools differ by operating system, so do not paste a command found for one platform into another. Use the project’s current “Dumping Discs” documentation as the authority for the method that matches your computer, drive, and disc type.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsKeep the original disc available
Use your own disc as the source and retain it while checking the image. A failed read, an interrupted operation, or a bad dump may require another pass. Avoid treating a single output file as trustworthy until verification succeeds.

Windows: create the image with the documented graphical route
On Windows, PCSX2 describes a graphical disc-imaging approach. The exact utility and labels can change, so follow the current Windows section of the PCSX2 “Dumping Discs” documentation rather than relying on a generic ISO tutorial.
- Insert the correct disc. Put the PS2 CD or DVD in the compatible optical drive and allow Windows to recognize the drive. If Windows reports that the media is unreadable, resolve the drive or disc problem before starting an imaging operation.
- Open the documented Windows dumping tool. Select the optical drive containing the PS2 disc. Confirm that the tool is reading the physical disc, not an empty drive or a different removable device.
- Select the CD or DVD procedure that matches the media. A CD image should follow the CD-specific instructions; a DVD image should follow the DVD instructions. Do not change the media type merely because the program offers a similarly named option.
- Choose a destination with enough free space. Save the image to a local drive or another storage location that will remain connected for the entire read. Use a clear filename that identifies the game and region without changing the file’s required extension.
- Use a conservative read speed when the tool offers that control. PCSX2 notes that slower drive speeds take longer but can increase the likelihood of producing a good dump. The best setting depends on the drive and disc; there is no universal speed that guarantees a correct result.
- Start the dump and wait for completion. Do not eject the disc, disconnect the USB drive, or let the computer sleep while the read is in progress. If the tool reports read errors, record them instead of assuming the resulting file is usable.
- Verify the completed image. Use the verification guidance in the PCSX2 documentation and, where applicable, check the image after installing PCSX2. A file that opens is not automatically an exact dump of the original disc.
macOS: use Disk Utility or the documented command-line method
For macOS, PCSX2 documents both Disk Utility and command-line options. The two routes are alternatives; choose the one you can follow accurately and keep the CD/DVD distinction intact.
Disk Utility route
- Insert the PS2 disc into a drive that supports its media type. If you are using a USB drive, confirm that it reads CDs as well as DVDs when the title is CD-based.
- Open Disk Utility and select the physical optical disc in the sidebar, not merely a mounted volume beneath it.
- Use the image-creation function described by PCSX2. Follow the project’s current macOS instructions for the output format and destination. Do not infer that a generic macOS disk image is automatically the format expected by every emulator.
- Wait for the read to finish before ejecting the disc or disconnecting the drive. If macOS reports an input/output error, treat the operation as unsuccessful and investigate the disc, drive, or read-speed setting.
- Run the PCSX2 verification guidance. Keep the original image and any converted copy separate until the source dump has been checked.
Command-line route
PCSX2 also lists command-line options for macOS. Use the exact command and device-selection method in the current project documentation. Device names, permissions, and output syntax are not universal across macOS versions or drives, so a command copied from an unrelated guide can target the wrong device or create an unusable file. The CD instructions remain separate from the DVD instructions.

Linux: follow the project’s command-line instructions for your media
PCSX2 documents a Linux command-line workflow. Linux systems expose optical drives under device paths that can differ between machines, and permissions may prevent a normal user from reading the device. For that reason, this article does not present a supposedly universal command.

- DISC Encryption II for password-controls and hidden-file functionality
- Confirm the drive and media. Identify the optical drive that actually contains the PS2 CD or DVD and verify that Linux can access it.
- Use the PCSX2 Linux instructions. Select the command for the disc type and follow the documented input-device and output-file syntax exactly.
- Check permissions before changing anything else. If the command cannot open the drive, solve the access problem described by your distribution rather than substituting an arbitrary device path.
- Allow the read to complete without interruption. A command that returns an output file after an error is not proof of a valid image.
- Verify the result using PCSX2’s guidance. If verification fails, repeat the dump with the troubleshooting steps below.
Why verification matters
PCSX2 warns that an image that is not identical to the original can be a “bad dump.” The project identifies bad dumps as a cause of problems such as freezes on loading screens. That means an emulator failure is not automatically evidence of a PS5SX2 problem, a missing setting, or an incompatible game; the image itself may be wrong.
Signs that the dump may be bad
- The imaging program reported read errors, retries, or an interrupted operation.
- The game starts but freezes at a loading screen or at a repeatable point that other verified images do not.
- Verification fails after the image is checked through the PCSX2 process.
- The file was created with instructions for the wrong media type, such as using a DVD workflow for a CD.
- The drive was disconnected, the disc was ejected, or the computer slept before the read completed.
How to improve a failed dump
- Clean the disc using a method appropriate for optical media and inspect it for visible damage.
- Confirm that the drive supports the disc’s CD or DVD format. If it does not, use another compatible internal or USB drive.
- Repeat the correct PCSX2 procedure for that media type.
- If the software allows speed selection, try a slower read speed. PCSX2 states that this can take longer while increasing the likelihood of a good dump.
- Verify the new image before converting, compressing, or moving it to another system.
Do not “repair” a failed image by renaming its extension. A filename change does not correct missing or incorrect disc data.
Which image formats PS5SX2 documents
PS5SX2’s project documentation lists four game-file extensions: .iso, .chd, .cso, and .zso. These are the formats to compare against when preparing a file for that project. The documentation does not make every other image type an accepted input merely because a computer can open it.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →| Extension | Documented by PS5SX2? | Practical meaning for your workflow |
|---|---|---|
.iso |
Yes | A documented game-file option. Keep the verified source image intact before making any conversion. |
.chd |
Yes | A documented game-file option. Use the project’s current guidance if conversion is required. |
.cso |
Yes | A documented game-file option. Do not assume that every tool’s CSO output has identical compatibility. |
.zso |
Yes | A documented game-file option. Check the current project notes for any version-specific limitations. |
Start with the verified dump you created from the original disc. If you need a different extension, use a conversion method that the current PS5SX2 documentation recognizes, and retain the original image so you can return to a known-good source if the converted file fails.

PS5SX2 prerequisites are separate from disc dumping
The PS5SX2 documentation says users must provide their own PS2 BIOS and their own game files. Your disc image supplies the game-file side; it does not supply a BIOS. Keep those requirements conceptually separate when diagnosing a launch failure.
The project’s instructions also describe a jailbroken PS5 and helper or mounting components as prerequisites. Those requirements concern the PS5 homebrew environment, not the optical-drive dump. They can change as the project develops, so check the project’s current documentation before attempting setup or assuming that an older tutorial still applies.
Compatibility work is ongoing. A correctly verified image in one of the documented extensions is necessary preparation, but it is not a promise that every PS2 title will run, that every revision of the project will behave the same way, or that a current helper component will remain compatible after an update.

Keep disc imaging separate from PS5 security changes
Making an image from a disc is a computer-and-optical-drive operation. It does not itself modify a PS5, bypass authentication, or authorize homebrew. Do not treat successful dumping instructions as permission to defeat console security.
Sony’s US PS5 system software license agreement restricts unauthorized or modified hardware and software, as well as tools that bypass or circumvent PS5 security or authentication. The agreement also says its restrictions apply to the greatest extent permitted by local law. It is a US-specific agreement and does not determine the legal status of private copies, emulation, jailbreaking, or homebrew in every jurisdiction.
Before using a backup with any modified-console environment, check the law where you live and the terms that apply to your hardware and software. This article does not provide a blanket assurance that making a personal copy or using it with homebrew is lawful everywhere.
Troubleshooting by symptom
The computer cannot read the disc
- Check whether the title is a CD or DVD and whether the drive supports that media.
- Try another compatible optical drive, including a USB DVD drive that explicitly reads CDs when needed.
- Inspect the disc for dirt or damage and retry the media-specific PCSX2 procedure.
The image file exists but PCSX2 verification fails
- Repeat the dump with the correct CD or DVD instructions.
- Use a slower read speed if the tool provides that control.
- Keep the original failed file for comparison, but do not move it into the PS5SX2 setup as though it were verified.
The game freezes during loading
First rule out a bad dump. PCSX2 specifically associates non-identical images with issues such as loading-screen freezes. Verify or recreate the image before changing PS5SX2 settings.
Quick Recap
PS5SX2 does not recognize the file
- Check that the extension is one of the four documented options:
.iso,.chd,.cso, or.zso. - Confirm that the file was created from your own disc and was not merely renamed.
- Review the project’s current documentation for version-specific requirements and compatibility changes.
The game file is accepted but will not start
- Confirm that your own PS2 BIOS is present as required by PS5SX2.
- Check the project’s current helper or mounting prerequisites.
- Verify the disc image again and consult the project’s compatibility information, since ongoing development means behavior can change between releases.
A reliable end-to-end checklist
- Identify the PS2 disc as CD or DVD.
- Confirm that the computer’s internal or USB optical drive reads that exact media type.
- Select the PCSX2 instructions for your operating system.
- Use the CD-specific route when the disc is a CD.
- Choose a destination and, where available, a conservative read speed.
- Complete the read without ejecting the disc or disconnecting the drive.
- Verify the image through the PCSX2 guidance.
- Keep the verified source image unchanged and make any needed conversion separately.
- Use only a PS5SX2-documented extension:
.iso,.chd,.cso, or.zso. - Supply your own PS2 BIOS and review the current PS5SX2 requirements before working on the PS5 side.
- Check local law and applicable platform terms before using homebrew or modified-console software.
