For an automatic cloud copy of your Samsung photos and videos, use Google Photos or OneDrive camera roll backup. For a local copy, use Samsung Smart Switch to back up to a computer or a compatible SD card. Samsung Gallery’s direct sync with OneDrive ended on September 30, 2026, so existing users need to switch to OneDrive’s camera roll backup for new uploads. Whichever route you choose, confirm that a recent photo is visible in the destination before deleting files or resetting your device.
Choose a backup destination
| Method | How it works | What you need to check |
|---|---|---|
| Google Photos | Automatic cloud backup of photos and videos to the Google account signed in to the app. | Confirm the right account is selected, backup is on, and sufficient account storage is available. Samsung’s instructions describe Google backup controls under Settings > Accounts and backup > Back up data, with photo and video options under Backup details; labels may differ. Samsung Gallery support. |
| OneDrive camera roll backup | Automatic cloud uploads through the OneDrive app. This is the current route for new uploads if you previously relied on Samsung Gallery sync. | Check the Microsoft account, turn on camera roll backup, and confirm a recent image appears in OneDrive. Microsoft’s transition guidance. |
| Smart Switch to a computer | A local backup session that can include photos and other supported phone data. | Connect to a computer and check the backup options shown for your model and software. Samsung says supported data and screens can vary. Samsung Smart Switch guide. |
| Smart Switch to an SD card | A local backup session to an SD card on supported devices. | Verify that your exact Galaxy model accepts an SD card and supports the card capacity you plan to use. |
| Samsung Cloud | Backs up selected Galaxy data and settings where the service and relevant backup items are supported. | Inspect the supported items on your device; do not assume the entire photo library is included. Availability and scope vary by region, carrier, operating system, and model. Samsung Cloud support. |
Cloud services suit ongoing uploads, while Smart Switch is useful for making a local copy during a backup session. They can complement each other: for especially important photos, consider keeping copies in two different destinations. No method should be treated as verified until you check the destination itself.

Back up Samsung photos to Google Photos
- Open Google Photos and make sure you are signed in to the Google account where you want the copy stored.
- Turn on backup in Google Photos. Samsung’s Gallery support also describes Google backup controls at Settings > Accounts and backup > Back up data, then Backup details for Photos & videos. If those labels are absent, look for the closest backup or account option available on your software version.
- Check the app’s backup status and the available storage for the Google account. Let the initial upload finish; the time required depends on your library and connection.
- Open Google Photos on the device or sign in to the same account elsewhere and confirm that a recent photo is present before removing its local copy.
Samsung’s documented menu path and available controls can vary by device, software, country, and carrier. Use the current labels on your phone or tablet rather than assuming every Galaxy has the same screens. Samsung’s Gallery instructions describe the relevant backup controls.
Keep backing up to OneDrive after Gallery sync ended
Samsung Gallery’s direct OneDrive sync ended on September 30, 2026. Microsoft says existing files remain accessible in OneDrive, but they no longer appear in Samsung Gallery after the change. To continue uploading new photos and videos to OneDrive, use camera roll backup in the OneDrive app—not a newly enabled Gallery sync.

Make a local copy with Smart Switch
Back up to a computer
- Install or open Samsung Smart Switch on a compatible computer, then connect the Galaxy device as directed by the app.
- Choose the backup option and review the categories Smart Switch offers. Select photos and any other data you want included.
- Start the backup and wait for Smart Switch to report that it has finished.
- Check the backup destination on the computer and confirm that the backup completed before deleting photos from the phone.
Back up to an SD card
On supported Galaxy devices, Smart Switch can back up to an SD card. Confirm that your particular model has an SD-card slot and that the card supports the capacity you need; this option is not available on every Galaxy phone or tablet. Use the Smart Switch screens on your device to select the backup categories and destination, then wait for completion and verify the result. Samsung notes that available screens and transferable data can differ by model and software version. See Samsung’s Smart Switch guide.

When Samsung Cloud may help
Samsung Cloud can back up selected Galaxy data and settings, but its supported items depend on factors including country, carrier, operating system, and phone version. Check the backup list on your own device and confirm whether photos are included before relying on it as a photo-library backup.
Samsung says automatic backup through the described Samsung Cloud flow requires the device to be charging, its screen to be off, and a Wi-Fi connection. The same guidance says files larger than 1 GB cannot be backed up through that flow. These conditions and limits are specific to Samsung’s described service flow; check the options and limits shown for your device. Samsung Cloud backup and restore guidance.

Verify the copy before deleting or resetting anything
- Check the backup status in the app or Smart Switch and wait until the initial backup finishes.
- Open the destination independently—Google Photos, OneDrive, the computer backup, or the SD card—and confirm a recent photo is there.
- For cloud backups, check that you are viewing the same account used for uploading.
- Before a factory reset, confirm that the copy you need is accessible from the destination, not only listed as pending or queued on the phone.
A backup status indicator is useful, but checking a recent file in the destination is the practical confirmation that the copy you need is available. Samsung’s overview of Galaxy backup and restore methods is at Samsung UK Support.
