Both procedures erase local data, including files in Downloads. Copy important items to Google Drive or an external storage device, then check that the copies are present and open before you begin.
What a Powerwash or recovery will erase
A Powerwash is a factory reset. Google says it erases all user data on the Chromebook’s hard drive, including the Downloads folder; files already stored in Google Drive or on external storage are not erased by the reset. See Google’s Chromebook reset instructions.

Recovery is different from a Powerwash: it removes and reinstalls ChromeOS. It also permanently erases the Chromebook’s hard drive, including downloaded files. Google advises backing up first if possible. See Google’s Chromebook recovery instructions.
In short, neither process is a way to preserve local files. Treat anything stored only on the Chromebook as at risk.

Find the files stored on your Chromebook
- Open the Files app.
- Review My files, especially Downloads, and check any other folders where you save documents, photos, or work.
- Identify files that are not already safely copied to Drive or another storage device.
Downloads are stored on the Chromebook by default rather than automatically backed up. Chromebook storage management may also automatically delete downloaded files when local space is low, so Downloads should not be treated as a durable backup. Google’s Files app guidance explains where files are stored and how to manage external storage.
Choose where to put the backup
| Destination | Best suited to | Check before relying on it |
|---|---|---|
| Google Drive | Files you want stored in your Google account and accessible online | Confirm the files have finished uploading and appear in Drive. Do not assume every Drive file is stored offline on the Chromebook; offline availability depends on settings and selected files. |
| External storage | A local copy, especially when you need offline access or have a large collection | Confirm ChromeOS recognizes the device, that it has enough free space, and that copied files open. Compatibility varies by Chromebook. Formatting a drive erases its contents. |
Google recommends Drive or external storage for files you want to keep before a reset. You can use both for especially important files, but make sure each copy is on a separate destination from the Chromebook being reset.

- Easily store and access 2TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
Drive files may still be waiting to sync, and cloud files are not necessarily available offline. Google describes how to make Drive files available offline; Chromebook Plus also has a broader My Drive sync option. Check Drive itself rather than assuming a file visible in the Files app has already been uploaded.
Copy files and verify the backup
- For Drive: In the Files app, select the local files or folders you need and copy or move them to Google Drive. Allow uploads to complete.
- For external storage: Connect the drive, confirm it appears in Files, then copy the selected files or folders to it. Wait for copying to finish before disconnecting it.
- Verify the destination: Open Drive or the external drive and confirm the expected files and folders are there. Open a few representative files to make sure the copies are usable.
- Keep the backup separate: Do not erase, reformat, or repurpose the only drive holding your backup.
If ChromeOS says an external device needs formatting, stop if it contains your only copy. Formatting erases the drive’s contents. Use another compatible destination rather than risking the files.

Back up Linux files separately
If you use the Chromebook’s Linux development environment, ordinary Downloads and Drive checks may not cover its files and apps. Use ChromeOS’s separate Linux backup-and-restore workflow and save the resulting backup file somewhere safe. Google’s Linux backup and restore instructions explain the process. Restoring that backup to another Chromebook requires a matching architecture, such as x86 or ARM.
Do not confuse a file backup with recovery media
A file backup preserves documents and downloads. Recovery media is used to reinstall ChromeOS; it does not serve as your file backup. USB recovery requires a flash drive of at least 8 GB, and the recovery-media workflow erases the drive. Keep your backup on a different device or in Drive. The 8 GB minimum is a recovery-media requirement, not a recommended capacity for every file backup.

Some Chromebooks offer internet recovery, while others require USB recovery. If the Chromebook offers internet recovery, follow its on-screen option. USB recovery requires another computer with Chrome to create the media and a separate USB drive that can be erased. Some older Chromebooks may not support recovery. Google’s recovery guidance covers the available methods.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsStart the reset only after checking these items
- Your Downloads folder and other local folders have been reviewed.
- Important files are copied to Drive or external storage, and you have checked the destination.
- Linux data and apps you need have their own backup.
- Your ordinary file backup is not on the drive you plan to erase for USB recovery.
For a Powerwash, Google’s reset flow begins by signing out, using the reset shortcut, choosing Powerwash, and following the setup prompts; see the current reset steps. Recovery follows the method shown for your device. If the Chromebook is managed by a school or workplace, contact its administrator before resetting or recovering it.
