The safest way to move a mobile indie-game save is to use that game’s own account, cloud-save, or transfer feature, then verify the save on the new device before deleting or resetting the old one. A phone backup alone is not proof that a particular game can be restored, and Android-to-iOS moves work only when the developer has built cross-platform migration.
Save systems differ by title. Some games sync continuously after you link an account; others keep progress on one device, require a one-time transfer code, or offer no recovery for guest progress. Use the procedure below as a decision guide, then follow the current support instructions for your specific game.

Why mobile game saves do not transfer in one universal way
A mobile game decides where progress lives and how another device can authenticate it. The save may be attached to a developer account, a platform service, a cloud record, or only the local app installation. Two games made by the same studio can use different systems, and an update can change the available menu labels.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsGoogle’s player guidance states, “Not all games automatically save your progress.” That means installing the same title on a new phone does not necessarily recreate your levels, unlocks, settings, or purchases. Apple likewise limits iCloud and Game Center continuity to supported games. A full Android or iPhone backup can restore many phone settings and apps, but it does not establish that a game’s private save will be readable on another device.

Think of a device backup as a general recovery layer and a game account or transfer tool as the authoritative save mechanism. For a reliable move, use the game’s mechanism first and keep the old installation available until the new device displays the expected progress.
Before changing phones: a save-preservation checklist
Complete these checks while the old device still opens the game and has an internet connection.
- Open the game’s settings. Look for Account, Profile, Cloud Save, Link Account, Transfer, Backup, Restore, or Support. Also note the player ID, user name, server or region, and the account email shown in the game, if any.
- Identify the actual save method. Do not assume that Google Play Games, Game Center, iCloud, or the phone’s backup service is used. Read the developer’s current support article for that title and edition.
- Sign in or link the account. If the game offers a cloud-save or account-link action, complete it on the old device. A guest profile may be tied to that device; Android Developers describes guest mode as “tied to a single device.”
- Run any explicit sync or transfer command. Some games save continuously, while others require a manual Upload, Sync, Generate Code, or Transfer action. Wait for the success message, recent-sync time, or other confirmation the game provides.
- Record recovery details privately. Keep the player ID, linked account address, purchase receipts, transfer-code expiry, and the old device’s model and operating-system version. Never post passwords, one-time codes, or full receipts publicly.
- Leave the old game installed. Do not uninstall, clear its data, sell the phone, or perform a factory reset until the new device has loaded the correct save and you have played far enough to confirm it.
Save methods and what each one can actually do
| Save method | How it works | Same-platform move | Android-to-iOS or iOS-to-Android | Main risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Developer account or game cloud | The game stores progress under its own login or linked identity. | Usually possible when the same game account is used, subject to the developer’s rules. | Possible only if that developer supports both platforms. | Signing into the wrong account can make an empty profile look like a lost save. |
| Google Play Games | A supported Android game associates progress with the selected Google account. | Sign into the same Google account on the new Android device. | Does not by itself create an iOS-compatible save. | Not every game uses the service, and the phone can be signed into a different account. |
| Apple iCloud and Game Center | A supported Apple game keeps progress and related data available across Apple devices. | Use the same Apple Account for iCloud and the same Game Center identity. | Does not by itself make a save readable on Android. | The game may not support iCloud or Game Center continuity. |
| Local or guest save | Progress remains in the app’s local data or is associated with a guest profile. | Often unavailable after reinstalling or changing devices unless the game offers a separate export. | Normally unavailable. | Uninstalling, clearing data, or losing the old device can permanently remove it. |
| Android or iPhone device backup | The operating system backs up selected app and device data for a restore. | May restore some app data, but the game decides what is restorable. | Does not translate Android app data into an iOS save, or vice versa. | Google warns that apps vary in what settings and data they can back up or restore. |
Moving a save to another Android device
When the game uses Google Play Games
- On the old Android device, open the game and check which Google account is selected in the game or Google Play Games settings.
- Confirm that the game is listed as supported and that the profile shows your current progress. If the game has its own account screen, link that as well; platform sign-in and the developer account are not interchangeable in every title.
- Keep the old device online and trigger the game’s Save, Sync, or Link command if one exists. Wait for confirmation.
- Install the same title on the new Android device from the official app store.
- During first launch, choose the same Google account used on the old device. If Android offers several accounts, stop and verify the email before continuing.
- Open the game’s account or cloud menu and select Restore, Download, or Load Cloud Save if the title requires a manual action.
- Check the player name, level, inventory, settings, and any other distinctive progress. Launch a level or make a small change, then confirm that the game reports a new sync.
Google Play Help explains that Google does not manage a game’s in-app data or game account. If the game’s account checks do not restore progress, the developer—not Google—is the party that can inspect the save.

When the game has its own account system
Use the developer’s login even if the phone also uses Google Play Games. A title may support email, a studio account, a social login, or a one-time transfer code. Follow the game’s exact sequence: some systems require linking on the old device before the new device is allowed to sign in, and some codes expire after one use or a short period.
When the save is only local or guest
Do not uninstall or clear app storage while the old device is still available. Search the game’s support menu for an export, account-link, or recovery option. If none exists, ask the developer whether a manual recovery is possible before wiping the phone. A standard Android device restore cannot be treated as a guaranteed replacement for a title-specific export.
Moving a save between Apple devices
Supported iCloud and Game Center games
- On the old iPhone or iPad, verify that the game shows the correct Apple Account and Game Center identity. Check that iCloud is enabled for the game if the title provides an app-specific switch.
- Open the game while online and use its own sync or account screen. Apple’s guidance applies only to supported games; a visible Game Center login does not prove that the game stores its save there.
- Keep the old device intact until the new one is verified.
- Install the same game on the new Apple device and sign into the same Apple Account for iCloud and the same Game Center account.
- Launch the game and choose its Restore, Download, or cloud-save option if shown. Confirm that the displayed profile and progress match the old device.
Apple describes the supported behavior this way: “On supported games, you can use iCloud and Game Center to keep your progress, high scores and game saves up to date across your devices.” The qualification matters: each game’s implementation determines whether a save is included.

When iCloud or Game Center does not restore the game
Check the game’s own account screen, not just the device’s Apple settings. Confirm that the old and new devices use the same Apple Account, that Game Center is not signed into a different identity, and that the game is the same regional or edition variant. Then consult the developer’s recovery instructions. Do not repeatedly choose “start new game” if the title may still be offering a cloud profile on a later screen.
Changing platforms: Android to iOS or iOS to Android
Platform-level backups are not migration tools. An Android backup cannot make an Android-only save readable by iOS, and an iPhone backup cannot make an iOS-only save readable by Android.
Cross-platform transfer exists only when the developer has designed a common account or an explicit migration path. Ask the developer before switching platforms and provide the exact game name, version, current platform, destination platform, and account type. A title may support cross-platform progress while excluding purchases, subscriptions, competitive rankings, or region-specific content; those policies are title-specific.

Developer examples show why assumptions are unsafe. SEGA’s support instructions for Sonic Dash describe restoring progress after signing into the linked Google Play Games or Game Center account, but explicitly state that saves cannot transfer between Android and iOS. First Touch Games documents platform-specific restrictions for some of its titles. Those examples are not universal rules, but they demonstrate that the game maker—not the phone manufacturer—decides whether a cross-platform move exists.

A conflict appears when the new device has a fresh local profile while the server has an older or different cloud profile. The game may ask which one to keep, or it may silently load one of them.

- Determine which profile is authoritative. The newest progress is not always the profile with the newest timestamp; an offline session may contain changes that were never uploaded.
- Read the consequences. A button such as Replace, Overwrite, Upload, Download, or Continue Offline can permanently discard the other profile.
- Use the developer’s conflict procedure. Android Developers says a game needs a conflict-resolution policy when local and cloud saves disagree and should explain the consequences to the player.
- Contact support before experimenting. If the game offers no safe preview or backup, stop and ask the developer which option preserves the desired save.
Never create several new profiles while troubleshooting unless support tells you to. Additional local saves can make it harder to identify the original account and may trigger another overwrite.

What to do when progress is missing
- Confirm the title and edition. Check that you installed the same game, region, publisher edition, and major version. A sequel or separate store listing may not share saves.
- Verify the game account. Compare the email, player ID, server, and profile name shown on the old device with the new device.
- Verify the platform account. On Android, check the selected Google account. On Apple devices, check both the Apple Account used for iCloud and the Game Center identity.
- Reconnect safely. Use the game’s account or cloud menu to sign out and back in only after recording the current profile. Avoid clearing storage or deleting the app while the old save is your only copy.
- Check the developer’s status and support instructions. A server outage, maintenance window, or account migration notice can prevent a valid cloud save from appearing.
- Escalate to the game developer. Include the player ID, linked account address, old and new device models, operating systems, platform change, approximate last successful save time, and non-sensitive purchase receipts if requested.
Google’s player help directs users to the developer when its account checks do not solve the problem because Google does not control the game’s in-app data or account records. Do not send passwords, authentication codes, or recovery keys in a public forum.
How to evaluate a game’s save system before you commit progress
| Question | What to look for | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Is saving automatic? | A visible sync indicator, save timestamp, or a manual Link/Upload command. | Automatic saving may occur only after sign-in or internet access; manual linking may be required. |
| Does it work on one platform or both? | Developer wording that names Android, iOS, or cross-platform support. | A same-platform restore does not imply Android-to-iOS compatibility. |
| Is sync continuous or one-time? | Cloud updates after each session versus a transfer code or export. | A one-time transfer can leave later progress on the old device unless you repeat the process. |
| Is guest progress preserved? | An account-link prompt, guest warning, or export option. | Guest data may be tied to one device and lost after uninstalling or resetting. |
| How are conflicts handled? | A preview of local and cloud profiles and clear Replace/Download choices. | Choosing the wrong profile can overwrite the save you meant to keep. |
Situations that require extra care
Before uninstalling a game
Complete a confirmed game-level sync or transfer, install the game on the replacement device, and verify the save there. Do not rely on an app-store download history or a phone backup as proof of recoverability.
Before a factory reset
Perform the same game-level checks, then retain screenshots of account identifiers and confirmation messages. A reset removes local guest data and may remove the only copy of an offline save.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

After a phone is lost or damaged
Recovery depends on whether the game had already linked progress to a developer or platform account. Install the title on a replacement device and use the same supported account. If the old save was guest-only and no export existed, contact the developer promptly; recovery may not be possible.
When you play offline
Reconnect before changing devices and allow the game to finish uploading. An offline session can contain progress that has never reached the cloud, so deleting the old installation immediately can erase it.
A safe decision path
- Same game, same platform, linked account: use the same game and platform account, then restore and verify.
- Same platform, no visible link: read the title’s support page before uninstalling; treat the save as local until proven otherwise.
- Different platform: obtain explicit confirmation from the developer that cross-platform transfer is supported and learn what data is excluded.
- Conflict prompt: stop, document both profiles, and follow the developer’s conflict procedure.
- Missing save after verification: check every account and identifier, then contact the developer with device and platform details.
Bottom line: verify the game save, not just the phone backup
Open the game on the old device, identify its real save system, link or sync it, and keep the old copy until the new device shows the correct progress. Same-platform moves are often straightforward when the same supported account is used. Cross-platform moves are never guaranteed, and guest saves may be device-bound. When a restore fails, the game’s developer is the authority that can investigate the account and server record.
