If you think someone accessed your iPhone, Apple Account, or private data, do not jump straight to an erase-and-restore. First use Safety Check to review sharing and connected devices, secure the Apple Account separately, and then decide whether a backup is safe to restore. Apple’s most important exception is specific: if you believe someone had physical access, tampered with built-in security, and installed malicious software such as stalkerware, erase the iPhone and set it up as new instead of restoring a backup, because the backup could reinstall that software.

The steps below keep three different situations separate: unwanted sharing or app access, Apple Account takeover, and suspected device tampering or malware. A reset can remove data, apps, privacy settings, and unwanted software, but it is not proof that an account was hacked and it is not required for every security concern.

Choose the response that matches the warning sign

“Compromised iPhone” can describe several different problems. The safest first action depends on what you actually observed.

What you suspect Start here Is a factory erase automatically required?
Another person can see your location, photos, messages, or shared accounts Settings > Privacy & Security > Safety Check. Review Manage Sharing & Access, or use Emergency Reset when you need to stop sharing broadly. No. Review and revoke access first.
Someone signed in to your Apple Account or changed its security details Change the Apple Account password, correct account information, remove unknown devices, and verify every recovery email address and phone number. Not necessarily. Account protection is a separate task.
Someone had physical access, tampered with built-in security, and may have installed malicious software such as stalkerware Preserve only what you safely need, erase all content and settings, and follow Apple’s warning not to restore from a backup in this scenario. Apple specifically describes a factory restore for this situation.

Apple does not say that every account compromise means every backup is infected. Treat the no-restore instruction as a response to the suspected-tampering and malicious-software scenario, not as a universal rule.

Make changes at a safe moment

If the suspected person is a partner, family member, employer, or anyone who might react to a change in access, think about the physical and privacy consequences before revoking sharing, deleting information, or changing passwords. Apple’s Safety Check guidance includes a Quick Exit option for leaving the screen quickly. A sudden reset or password change can alert someone who is monitoring the phone, so use a safer device or location when appropriate.

Safety Check works on an iPhone running iOS 16 or later. The iPhone must be signed in to an Apple Account with two-factor authentication enabled. Screen Time restrictions or a mobile-device-management profile can limit what Safety Check lets you change. If a work or school profile controls the phone, document that limitation rather than assuming the controls are missing because the phone is infected.

1. Review sharing, apps, and connected devices

Use Manage Sharing & Access for a targeted review

  1. Open Settings > Privacy & Security > Safety Check.
  2. Choose Manage Sharing & Access.
  3. Review which people and apps can access information such as location, photos, calendars, contacts, and other shared data. Remove access you do not recognize or no longer want.
  4. Review the Apple Account devices shown by Safety Check. A device you do not own or recognize needs separate attention in your Apple Account security settings.
  5. Check the verification phone numbers and the security details displayed by the review. Make sure each number is still under your control.
  6. Continue through the review and confirm the changes only when doing so is safe.

Use Emergency Reset when broad sharing must stop

Emergency Reset is the faster route when you need to stop sharing widely. It also lets you review emergency contacts, connected Apple Account devices, verification numbers, and device or account security. Because it can change many relationships at once, use it deliberately and consider whether stopping access will create a personal-safety risk.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Safety Check is an access review, not a malware scanner. Seeing no unfamiliar share does not prove that the operating system is clean, and finding an unfamiliar share does not by itself prove that the phone was technically hacked.

2. Secure the Apple Account separately

If you see an unfamiliar sign-in, device, password change, message, or account detail, protect the Apple Account even if you later decide not to erase the iPhone. Apple’s account guidance is available at If you think your Apple Account has been compromised.

  1. Change the password. Use a strong, unique password that has not been used on another service. Change it from a device and network you trust if the current iPhone may be under someone else’s control.
  2. Correct personal and security information. Check the name, birth date, recovery details, and other account information for changes you did not make.
  3. Remove unfamiliar devices. Review the device list associated with the Apple Account and remove anything you do not recognize. After regaining access, review which Apple Account is signed in on each device and service you use.
  4. Verify every associated email address and phone number. You must control these channels because they can receive verification or recovery messages. Ask your mobile provider to confirm that SMS forwarding has not been set up on an associated number.
  5. Turn on two-factor authentication if it is not enabled. Apple also identifies Security Keys as an additional protection against targeted attacks such as phishing. Neither feature proves that the iPhone itself is free of malicious software.
  6. Use account recovery if you are locked out. If you cannot reset the password or sign in, Apple directs you to iforgot.apple.com. Recovery can take time; keep control of the trusted phone number and email address while it is in progress.

Do not treat changing the iPhone passcode as a substitute for changing the Apple Account password. The passcode protects the device; the Apple Account password protects cloud services, account settings, and sign-ins on other devices.

3. Back up what you need without creating a new risk

Apple supports two practical backup routes: an iCloud backup and a backup made on a Mac or Windows computer. A backup preserves data for a later restore, but it does not replace account-security work. In the suspected-malware scenario, preserving data and restoring that same backup are separate decisions.

Backup route What you need Encryption details Important limitation
iCloud backup An Apple Account, internet access, and enough iCloud storage. On the iPhone, use Settings > [your name] > iCloud > iCloud Backup > Back Up Now. Apple says iCloud data is encrypted. Under the default Standard Data Protection, 14 categories receive end-to-end encryption. Optional Advanced Data Protection raises that to 23 categories and includes iCloud Backup, Photos, and Notes. In a suspected-tampering and malicious-software case, Apple says not to restore from a backup.
Computer backup A USB cable, a Mac running macOS Catalina 10.15 or later with Finder, or a Windows 10 or later PC with Apple Devices. Check that the cable and both ports are compatible before buying one. Local backups are not encrypted by default. You can select Encrypt local backup and create a backup password. You need the backup password to use an encrypted local backup. The same no-restore warning applies when the reason for erasing is suspected malicious software.

What iCloud protection settings mean

Apple describes Standard Data Protection as the default. It provides end-to-end encryption for 14 categories, including Health data and iCloud Keychain passwords. Apple says Advanced Data Protection increases the figure to 23 categories, including iCloud Backup, Photos, and Notes; trusted devices retain sole access to the encryption keys for most iCloud data. These are Apple’s descriptions of its service, not independent security measurements. See Store your data securely in iCloud for the account setting and category details.

What an encrypted computer backup contains

Apple says an encrypted local backup can include saved passwords, Wi-Fi settings, website history, Health data, and call history. It does not include Face ID, Touch ID, or the device passcode. The encryption password is essential: without it, the backup cannot be used.

In Finder on a Mac, or in Apple Devices on Windows, connect the iPhone by USB, select the device, choose the option to encrypt the local backup, set and record the password, and start the backup. Apple’s encrypted-backup guidance explains the categories and password requirement. Do not store the only copy of the password on the iPhone you are about to erase.

4. Decide whether to erase the iPhone

When Apple’s factory-restore advice applies

Apple’s Personal Safety Guide addresses a specific high-risk situation: someone had physical access, tampered with the device’s built-in security, and installed malicious software such as stalkerware. In that case, a factory restore erases the device, removes apps—including apps installed without your knowledge—resets privacy settings, and installs the latest available operating-system software. The detailed guidance is in Restore device to factory settings.

When an erase may not be the first move

If the evidence is an unfamiliar location share, an unwanted app permission, or an unknown Apple Account device, start with Safety Check and account protection. An erase destroys local information and may remove evidence you still need. If another person’s reaction could put you at risk, plan the timing and location before making visible changes.

The backup warning that changes the restore decision

Apple’s explicit warning is: “If you’re erasing all content and settings because you’re concerned your device was tampered with and had malicious software installed, don’t restore from a backup.” The reason is that a backup may reinstall the software you are trying to remove. Therefore, in that defined scenario, the safer setup choice is set up as new, then sign in only after the Apple Account is secure. Do not expand this warning into a claim that every ordinary account compromise makes every iCloud or computer backup unsafe.

5. Erase the iPhone securely

Check the prerequisites

Apple lists internet access, the iPhone passcode or password, the Apple Account password, and time among the requirements for a factory restore. Make sure you have recovered the Apple Account first if Activation Lock or account sign-in will be needed during setup. If you are preserving documents, photographs, or messages, copy only what you need through a backup or another safe method before erasing.

Use the erase controls

  1. Open Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone.
  2. Tap Erase All Content and Settings.
  3. Read the summary of what will be removed. This includes personal data, settings, apps, and privacy permissions.
  4. Enter the device passcode when requested.
  5. Enter the Apple Account password if the iPhone asks for it.
  6. Follow the on-screen confirmation steps and keep the iPhone connected to power if possible.
  7. Wait for the erase and installation process to finish. The iPhone restarts to the setup screen when complete.

Use Apple’s factory-restore guide if the labels on your iOS version differ. The result Apple describes is a cleared device with removed apps and reset privacy settings, running the latest operating-system software available through that process.

6. Restore—or deliberately do not restore

For suspected tampering or malicious software: set up as new

When the reason for erasing is the specific tampering-and-malware scenario above, do not select an iCloud or computer backup during setup. Choose the option to set up the iPhone as new. Sign in with the Apple Account only after its password, trusted numbers, recovery details, and device list have been checked. Reinstall apps manually from the App Store and bring back only files you have separately evaluated.

Setting up as new means some information will not return automatically. That loss is the trade-off Apple’s warning creates: restoring convenience from a backup may also restore the unwanted software.

For an ordinary restore decision

If your concern was limited to sharing, app permissions, or an account incident and you have decided a restore is appropriate, Apple’s standard process lets you choose an iCloud backup during iPhone setup. Review the backup’s date and size, sign in to the Apple Account, and keep the iPhone connected to Wi-Fi and power while the restore runs. Time depends on the backup size and network speed.

Restore from a Mac or Windows computer

  1. On a Mac running macOS Catalina 10.15 or later, open Finder. On Windows 10 or later, open Apple Devices.
  2. Connect the iPhone with a USB cable and select it in the computer app.
  3. Choose the option to restore from a backup, select the backup by date, and enter the encrypted-backup password if one was used.
  4. Leave the iPhone connected until the restore completes. Do not disconnect it merely because the first restart has finished.

Apple documents both routes in Restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch from a backup. These normal restore instructions do not override Apple’s instruction to avoid a backup when the erase is intended to remove suspected malicious software.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

7. Verify the clean setup and account

After a setup-as-new or normal restore, check the security boundary before adding more data:

  • Confirm that the iPhone is signed in to the intended Apple Account, not an unfamiliar account.
  • Review the Apple Account device list and remove anything you do not recognize.
  • Confirm that the trusted phone numbers and email addresses remain under your control.
  • Run Safety Check again to review sharing and app access after setup.
  • Keep two-factor authentication enabled; consider Security Keys if your risk includes targeted phishing.
  • Reinstall only apps you recognize and review their permissions before granting access.

These checks reduce the chance of immediately recreating the access problem, but they do not provide a forensic certification that the device has never been tampered with.

Troubleshooting common failure points

Safety Check is missing or cannot change something

Confirm that the iPhone runs iOS 16 or later, that an Apple Account is signed in, and that two-factor authentication is enabled. Screen Time restrictions and mobile-device-management profiles can limit the controls. If a profile belongs to an employer or school, contact that administrator through a safe channel rather than trying to bypass it.

You cannot change the Apple Account password

Check that you still control the associated email address and phone number. Ask the mobile provider to verify that SMS forwarding has not been added. If sign-in or password reset remains impossible, use iforgot.apple.com for account recovery.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The computer backup is not available

A local backup that was never encrypted cannot be retroactively opened with an encryption password. An encrypted backup requires the password created when encryption was enabled. If you do not have that password, do not assume that a new password will unlock the old backup.

The restore is taking a long time

For an iCloud restore, remain on Wi-Fi and power; Apple says the duration depends on backup size and network speed. For a computer restore, keep the USB connection intact until the computer reports completion. If the iPhone repeatedly returns to setup, stop and verify the backup date, the Apple Account used, and the computer application version before trying again.

You still suspect surveillance after a reset

Do not infer malware solely from battery life, heat, or performance changes. Apple’s cited guidance supports a factory restore for the particular suspected-tampering scenario, but it does not diagnose an individual phone. If the concern involves personal safety, account access, or a managed device, seek help from a trusted professional or the relevant account or device administrator rather than installing an unverified “cleaner.”

What this process can—and cannot—prove

A careful sequence separates access control from device remediation. Safety Check can expose sharing and connected-account access. Password and recovery-detail changes can secure the Apple Account. A factory restore can erase data, apps, privacy settings, and suspected unwanted software in the scenario Apple describes. None of those steps alone proves who accessed the account, establishes how an incident began, or guarantees that every copied file is safe.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The practical decision is therefore conditional: review sharing first, secure the account, make a backup only if preserving data is safe, and—when physical tampering and malicious software are the concern—erase and set up as new rather than restoring the backup.
