Android can back up apps, some app data, and device settings to your Google Account, but that backup is not a guaranteed, exact copy of every home-screen page. For the best chance of preserving your arrangement, use Google backup before a reset, transfer directly from the old phone during setup when possible, use Smart Switch for compatible Galaxy-to-Galaxy moves, and export a backup from your third-party launcher. Afterward, check folders, shortcuts, widgets, and page order manually.
What an Android home-screen backup actually preserves
Your home screen is made of several different kinds of items: app icons, folders, shortcuts, widgets, and one or more pages. Android treats those items separately, and the app that draws the screen—the launcher—also stores layout information. A Google Account backup can include broad categories such as installed apps, app data, and device settings, but it is not documented as an unconditional launcher clone.

Google states: “Important: Not all apps can back up or restore all settings and data.” That limitation matters for home screens because an icon may return while a widget, shortcut destination, folder position, or app-specific setting does not. A widget can also depend on the widget provider being installed, signed in, and compatible on the replacement phone.

- Google device backup: a cloud copy of supported apps, app data, and device settings.
- Device-to-device transfer: a direct setup-time copy whose results depend on the two phones and the transfer method.
- Manufacturer transfer: for example, Samsung Smart Switch can list Home layout for supported Galaxy transfers.
- Launcher backup: an export made by a third-party launcher, when that launcher provides the feature.
None of these routes guarantees an identical result across every manufacturer, Android version, launcher, widget provider, or work profile. Combining the available routes and planning a manual check is safer than relying on one promise.

Choose the right backup route

If the old phone is available, start with its setup transfer and add a launcher export when applicable. If it is unavailable, use the Google Account backup and any launcher backup that was created earlier. For a same-brand Galaxy move, Smart Switch can provide a more device-specific path than a generic cloud restore.
Prepare the old phone before a reset or transfer
1. Identify the launcher and manufacturer
Open the phone’s Settings and search for Default apps, Home app, or Default home app. The selected app is your launcher. The wording and location differ by Android version and manufacturer. Record its name and version, and note whether the phone is a Galaxy or another brand. A launcher’s private layout file is separate from the Google Account’s list of apps and from system settings.
2. Inventory the layout
Take screenshots of every home-screen page, including the dock and folders. Open each folder and capture its contents. Write down widgets, custom shortcuts, and any page-specific arrangement that would be difficult to recreate. Screenshots are not a restorable backup, but they are a reliable visual reference when an icon or widget is missing.
Also list apps that require a sign-in, a work profile, or a separate download. A restored icon does not prove that the app’s account data, notification settings, or widget configuration came back.
3. Run Google backup
- Open Settings and search for Backup. On many phones this leads to Google > Backup; the exact path varies by device and Android version.
- Review the displayed backup details, including the Google Account being used and the categories available on that phone.
- Choose Back up now if the option is shown. Keep the phone on power and a reliable internet connection until the status updates.
- Check the time of the latest backup. Do not erase the old phone until that timestamp reflects the changes you care about.
Google’s instructions for backing up or restoring data on an Android device explain the categories and the device-specific settings path. A backup can be current even when a particular launcher or widget does not support restoring its own data.
4. Export the launcher’s layout, if available
Open the launcher’s settings and look for Backup, Restore, Import, or Export. Save the file to cloud storage, a computer, or another location that will remain available after the phone is reset. If the launcher offers a choice between an internal backup and a shareable file, use the shareable option and verify that the file can be opened or downloaded from another device.

Do not assume that a launcher export includes every widget or app-specific configuration. Treat it as a layout-specific safety net, not as a substitute for Google’s device backup.

Use setup-time restoration whenever possible
When you turn on a new phone or start a factory-reset phone, connect it to Wi-Fi and sign in with the Google Account used for the old device. Choose the option to copy apps and data or restore from a previous backup, then select the old phone’s backup if more than one is listed. Google describes this flow in Copy apps & data from an Android to a new Android device.
Some app and settings data can be restored only during setup. Google One’s guidance also notes that certain restore choices may require a factory reset if setup has already been completed. If the phone is still blank, it is usually better to restart setup and select the backup than to expect every item to appear later from a settings screen.
Allow the restore to finish
Apps may continue downloading after the first boot, and widgets may not be available until their apps finish installing. Google says the process can take up to 24 hours. Keep the phone connected to power and Wi-Fi, and avoid judging the layout while downloads are still in progress.
Respect Android-version direction
The replacement phone should run the same Android version or a newer one for the most complete transfer. Google states: “You can’t restore a backup from a higher Android version onto a phone running a lower Android version.” For example, a backup made on a phone running a newer Android release may not restore to an older-release phone. Update the replacement phone before attempting a second restore when an update is available.
Copy directly from an old Android phone
If both phones are available, the setup wizard may offer a direct copy using a cable or a wireless connection. Follow the new phone’s on-screen Copy apps & data instructions, unlock the old phone when requested, and keep both devices charged. Direct transfer can move content that is not currently available from a cloud backup, but the exact list depends on the phone models and method.

Read the transfer summary before accepting it. A method may copy apps and some settings without copying every launcher detail. Android’s transfer guidance and its Switch from iPhone to Android information show that availability varies by device and transfer path. Do not treat a cable or wireless transfer as a universal guarantee of page order, widgets, or shortcuts.
When the old phone cannot stay connected
Complete the initial transfer while both phones are together. If the old phone is lost, damaged, or already wiped, skip direct transfer and use the Google backup selected during setup. Your screenshots and any exported launcher file become especially important in that situation.
Galaxy users: check Samsung Smart Switch
Samsung documents Smart Switch as a Galaxy transfer and backup tool and lists Home layout among the content that can be transferred for Galaxy devices. It supports Wi-Fi, a cable connection, and a computer-based route. Open Smart Switch on both compatible phones, choose the sending and receiving roles, review the content categories, and include the home-layout category when it is offered.

A Galaxy-to-Galaxy result should not be generalized to cross-brand Android phones, and the presence of a Home layout checkbox does not establish that every widget provider or app shortcut will behave identically after the move.
Use a third-party launcher’s own backup
Custom launchers often know more about their own grid, folder, gesture, and page settings than Android’s general backup service does. Open the launcher’s settings on the old phone, create an export, and copy that file somewhere reachable from the new phone. Install the same launcher on the new phone, set it as the default home app, and use its import or restore command.
Nova Launcher example
Nova describes its feature as “Easily save and reload any and all of your custom setups” on its official site. Its FAQ recommends keeping backups within the same major-version family, such as Nova 7 with Nova 7 and Nova 8 with Nova 8. Check the installed version on both phones before restoring, and update or install the compatible family if necessary.

Even a successful launcher import may leave a widget blank, replace a shortcut with a normal app icon, or omit an app that is not installed yet. Restore the launcher after its referenced apps are present when practical, then check each page against your screenshots.

Verify the restored home screen
After setup, downloads, and launcher restoration have finished, compare the new phone with your inventory. Use this checklist:
- Confirm the selected launcher is the one you intended to use.
- Swipe through every home-screen page and check the order of pages.
- Open every folder and compare its apps with your screenshots.
- Check the dock, app icons, and custom shortcuts.
- Tap each widget. Re-add any missing widget from the widget picker, then sign in or configure it if required.
- Check that app icons point to the intended account, document, contact, or web page.
- Look for duplicate icons created by a transfer and remove only the duplicates you have verified.
- Open important apps and confirm that their own data and accounts are present.
- Check work-profile or managed apps separately; organization policies can control whether their data and widgets transfer.
Google’s guide to adding apps, shortcuts and widgets to Home screens explains how these elements are added and moved. Use those controls to rebuild anything that did not return rather than repeatedly resetting the phone.
Troubleshoot common failures
The backup is not listed during setup
- Confirm that the new phone is signed in to the same Google Account as the old phone.
- Connect to stable Wi-Fi and install pending system updates.
- Check the old phone’s backup timestamp and run Back up now again if the old phone still works.
- Make sure the replacement phone is not running an older Android version than the phone that created the backup.
- If setup has already ended, review Google One’s restore guidance; some options require returning to factory setup.
Apps returned but the layout is wrong
This usually means the app list was restored without a complete launcher workspace. Set the intended launcher as default, import its own backup if you created one, and rebuild folders and page order from your screenshots. Do not delete the old phone or its launcher backup until the new arrangement is acceptable.
Widgets are missing or blank
Wait for the widget’s app to finish installing, then restart the phone or add the widget manually. Sign in to the provider if required. Some widgets store configuration outside Android’s general backup, so recreating their settings may be necessary.

Check that the same launcher is installed, that its major version is compatible, and that the backup file is complete and readable. If the launcher changed its backup format, install the version family that created the file, restore it, and update afterward if the launcher supports that sequence. When no compatible import is possible, use the screenshots as the reconstruction guide.
The transfer stopped or missed items
Keep both devices charged, close unnecessary apps, and retry from the setup flow rather than interrupting the copy. For a Galaxy transfer, switch between Wi-Fi, cable, or computer methods only after checking Smart Switch’s supported content for your models. A second transfer can add missing items, but it may also create duplicates, so review the result carefully.
What advanced Android documentation means for ordinary users
The Android Open Source Project documents XML import and export through LauncherProvider for launcher implementers. That mechanism is intended for developers and device builders, not as a normal consumer command or a universal backup file. You should not attempt to use it as a replacement for Google backup, a manufacturer transfer tool, or your launcher’s visible export feature.
A practical decision framework
You are factory-resetting the same phone
Run Google’s backup, export the launcher layout, take screenshots, and restore during the reset setup. Keep the launcher file and screenshots outside the phone before erasing it.
You are moving to another Android phone and still have the old one
Use the new phone’s direct copy flow first, then restore the launcher backup and verify the pages. Keep the old phone untouched until apps, folders, shortcuts, and widgets have been checked.
You are moving between Galaxy phones
Run Google backup as a general safety net, then use Smart Switch and include Home layout when the option is available for your models. Finish with a manual widget and shortcut check.
You use a heavily customized third-party launcher
Make the launcher export the primary layout safeguard, while still running Google backup for apps and device data. Match launcher versions where the vendor specifies a compatibility family.
You no longer have the old phone
Choose the latest compatible Google backup during setup, wait for the restore to complete, install the missing apps, and rebuild the remaining layout from screenshots or another saved reference. An exact recreation may not be possible if no launcher export exists.
