On a PlayStation 3, make a copy of your eligible Skate 3 save before installing custom content by opening Game > Saved Data Utility (PS3), selecting the save, pressing Triangle, choosing Copy, and copying it to storage media. To restore it, select the exported copy on that media and use the same Triangle > Copy command to return it to system storage. This is a PS3 system-menu procedure, not a confirmed Xbox 360 method. Sony also warns that some saved data cannot be copied, so check that the Skate 3 file offers the Copy command before changing your game.
What this backup protects—and what it does not
A backup gives you a separate copy of an eligible save so you can return to an earlier state if custom content causes unwanted changes, corruption, or an unusable profile. It does not make incompatible content compatible, remove copy restrictions, or prove that a particular mod changes the career save at all.

The documented instructions in this guide apply to the retail PlayStation 3 system. They use Sony’s Saved Data Utility and apply only when the save can be copied. The available evidence does not establish a reliable, current Xbox 360 procedure for transferring and restoring Skate 3 saves, nor does it prove that every retail Skate 3 save is copyable.

Custom-content methods also differ. A recipe file for a custom character is not automatically a complete save file, and a guide that says a recipe works on both Xbox 360 and PS3 does not establish that full saves or installation steps are interchangeable. Treat the save backup as a separate safety step from whatever content installation method you plan to use.

Before installing anything: prepare a clean restore point
Finish the current session
Complete or exit any in-game activity and return Skate 3 to a stable state before copying. Avoid making a backup while the game is saving, loading, or displaying an error. The official instructions document the console copy feature rather than a Skate 3-specific mod test, so this is a practical precaution: preserve the last state you know works.
Use the account that owns the save
PS3 saved data is managed separately for each user. Sign in to the PS3 user account under which you normally play Skate 3, then open the utility. A copy made while viewing another user’s saves will not protect the save stored under your normal account.
Have suitable storage ready
For a local backup, prepare writable storage media supported by your PS3. A generic USB flash drive is an optional choice for this workflow; Sony describes the destination only as “storage media,” does not specify a required brand, capacity, or speed, and notes that an adaptor may be needed on some PS3 models. Buying a different drive cannot bypass a save’s copy restriction.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsRecord which copy is original
Keep the first exported copy untouched. If you make additional backups after experimenting, use clearly separated folders or media labels outside the PS3’s save-management screen so you can identify the pre-installation version. Do not overwrite the clean copy with a later save until you are certain the custom content behaves as expected.

How to back up Skate 3 on PS3 to storage media
- Log in to the PS3 user account that contains your Skate 3 progress.
- From the XMB, open Game, then choose Saved Data Utility (PS3).
- Highlight the Skate 3 saved-data item. Check that it is the file you intend to protect before opening any copy command.
- Press the Triangle button to open the options menu.
- Select Copy, choose the connected storage media as the destination, and follow the on-screen prompts.
- Wait for the operation to finish. Do not remove the media or shut down the PS3 during the copy.
- Open the storage media entry in the same utility and confirm that an exported Skate 3 item appears before installing custom content. Sony’s manual describes the copy operation but does not prescribe a Skate 3-specific verification test; seeing the item on the destination is a sensible confirmation that the export completed.
Sony’s system guide summarizes the purpose of this process with the recommendation: “It is recommended that you copy important data for backup purposes.” The recommendation is general to PS3 saved data, not a guarantee that every game save can be exported.
How to restore the saved copy after a problem
Return to a stable console state
Quit Skate 3 and make sure no save operation is in progress. Connect the same storage media that contains the clean export and sign in to the PS3 user account that owns the original save.
Copy the export back to system storage
- Open Game > Saved Data Utility (PS3).
- Navigate to the storage-media entry and highlight the Skate 3 export you want to restore.
- Press Triangle, choose Copy, and select the PS3’s system storage when prompted.
- Follow the prompts until the operation completes. If the console warns that a file with the same name already exists, proceed only if you deliberately want the backed-up version to replace the current one.
- Launch Skate 3 and check the restored progress before installing anything else.
Restoring returns the exported file to system storage; it does not merge two different versions of a save. Keep the original export until you have confirmed that the restored state is the one you need.
When the PS3 will not let you choose Copy
Sony explicitly says that some saved data cannot be copied. If the Skate 3 item does not present the standard Triangle > Copy action, stop before modifying the console or adding custom content. The documented material does not establish a safe workaround for an unmodified PS3 in that situation.

- Check that you are in Saved Data Utility (PS3), not a different media-management screen.
- Confirm that you are signed in to the user account that owns the save.
- Verify that the storage device is connected and recognized, then try the menu again.
- If Copy remains unavailable, treat the save as non-copyable for this procedure. Do not assume that a different flash drive, a second account, or a renamed file will remove the restriction.
Community discussions describe protected saves and specialist tools, but those are not Sony instructions and do not guarantee that a modified save can be restored to another account or console. Changing protected-save data without a verified, platform-specific need can leave you with a file that the game or account will not accept.
Using PSN online storage instead of a USB device
Sony also documents copying PS3-format saved data to online storage and downloading it back to the console. This is a separate route from local storage media and has its own eligibility requirements.
| Requirement or limitation | What the documented PS3 workflow establishes |
|---|---|
| Account | A Sony Entertainment Network account is required for the online-storage workflow. |
| Subscription | PlayStation Plus is required according to Sony’s guide. |
| Game support | Some games do not support online storage, so the Skate 3 save must be accepted by the service on your console. |
| Restore action | The saved data can be downloaded back to the PS3 when the service and save are eligible. |
| Current availability | Service terms and availability can change; verify the account, subscription, and game-support requirements on your own PS3 before relying on this route. |
Online storage is useful when you do not have suitable removable media, but it is not a way around a save that Sony marks as non-copyable. Confirm that the backup is visible in online storage before installing content, just as you would confirm a local export on a USB device.

What the custom-content sources do—and do not—tell you
Recipe files are not complete saves
A community Skate 3 custom-character page discusses recipe files and says certain recipes are compatible across Xbox 360 and PS3. That statement concerns the recipe or character content described there. It does not establish that a full career save can move between platforms, that all custom-content types use the same installer, or that a PS3 save can be restored on an Xbox 360 account.
Project-specific PC folders are different
A Skate 3 recompilation project’s README describes a save directory under %APPDATA%skate3 and portable-save options for that project. Those paths belong to the recompilation and must not be presented as instructions for a retail PS3 or Xbox 360. Do not copy files into that folder and expect a console save to appear, and do not assume another emulator uses the same location.
Do not infer that every mod touches the career save
The available material does not prove that every custom-content method changes the career save. Some content may be recipe-based or otherwise separate from progress data; other methods may alter files that the game needs to load. Back up anyway, because the installation method—not just the visible content—can determine what is changed.

The reviewed sources do not provide a sufficiently reliable, current official sequence for exporting and restoring a Skate 3 save on Xbox 360. Do not present the PS3 menu path as an Xbox procedure, and do not treat a community recipe-compatibility statement as proof of full-save transfer.

If you play on Xbox 360, the responsible conclusion is narrower: preserve any platform-supported backup option that your own console and account expose, and verify the exact instructions for your edition and service before installing custom content. Because a confirmed Xbox workflow is not established here, this guide cannot promise a restore path for an Xbox save.
Recovery decisions after custom content causes trouble
The game still starts, but progress is wrong
Close the game, keep the current file untouched for reference, and restore the clean PS3 export through Saved Data Utility (PS3). Launch Skate 3 and check the progress before trying the content again. If you later test another installation, make a new backup rather than replacing the first clean copy.
The save is missing from the utility
Check the correct PS3 user account first. Saved data is user-specific, so looking under a different account can make a valid save appear absent. If the original system-storage item is genuinely gone, a local export can help only if you made one beforehand; this procedure cannot recreate a backup that was never copied.

Do not alter protected-save data simply to force a restore. Community tools and instructions are not a guarantee that a save will work on another account or console. Keep the original export, avoid overwriting it, and use only a platform-specific method whose compatibility is established for your exact system and account.
The console reports that the save cannot be copied
Stop the installation plan for that save. Sony’s documented feature does not provide a bypass for non-copyable data, and buying different storage media does not change the restriction.
Quick Recap
A concise pre-installation checklist
- Platform identified as retail PS3; do not substitute these steps for Xbox 360 instructions.
- Correct PS3 user account signed in.
- Skate 3 is in a stable state and is not saving or loading.
- Game > Saved Data Utility (PS3) opens normally.
- The Skate 3 item offers Triangle > Copy.
- Storage media is connected and recognized, or online-storage eligibility has been confirmed.
- The exported item is visible on the destination before custom content is installed.
- The first clean copy will remain untouched.
- The custom-content method is understood as separate from the save-backup method.
Key limitations to remember
- PS3 saved data is tied to the user account under which it is managed.
- Some PS3 saved data cannot be copied.
- Online storage requires the account and subscription conditions Sony documents, and some games are excluded.
- A PS3 system-menu procedure is not an Xbox 360 procedure.
- Recipe-file compatibility does not establish full-save compatibility.
- A project-specific PC save folder does not describe retail-console storage.
- No claim here depends on a hands-on test of Skate 3 custom-content installation.
