Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteTimeshift protects a Linux Mint installation by saving snapshots of system files and settings. Choose either rsync or BTRFS mode, store snapshots on a separate non-system device when possible, and keep a separate backup of your home folder and other personal files.
If Mint still starts, select a snapshot in Timeshift and choose Restore; an online restore finishes after a reboot. If Mint will not boot, start an Ubuntu-compatible live USB or CD, run Timeshift from that live session, and restore the installed system. EFI machines require EFI-mode live booting and correct EFI-partition mapping.

What Timeshift backs up—and what it does not
Timeshift is a system-recovery tool, not a complete backup program. The project documentation states: “Timeshift is designed to protect only system files and settings.” It creates a point-in-time copy that can return Linux Mint to an earlier working state after a failed update, an incorrect configuration change, or other operating-system damage. Read the official Timeshift project documentation for the project’s current compatibility notes.
System files and settings
A restored snapshot can replace the installed system’s files and configuration with the versions saved in that snapshot. This is useful when the operating system no longer behaves as it did before a change. Treat a restore as a system-wide change: close applications, save work, and make sure you understand which snapshot and included paths you are selecting.

Your home folder is excluded by default
Timeshift normally excludes user home directories. Documents, photos, music, videos, browser profiles, mail stores, SSH keys, and other personal data therefore need a separate file-backup method. If you have changed Timeshift’s include and exclude rules, review them before creating or restoring a snapshot; do not assume that a customized snapshot contains every personal file.
The project documentation also directs readers who need document and file backups to a dedicated file-backup application. Keep that file backup independent of Timeshift so a system restore and a personal-data recovery are two separate operations.
Check your Mint installation before enabling snapshots
Linux Mint includes Timeshift in all Mint versions according to the Linux Mint User Guide. Before relying on it, identify the filesystem, boot mode, partition layout, and destination you will use.
- Filesystem: determine whether the installed system uses rsync-compatible filesystems or BTRFS.
- BTRFS layout: Timeshift’s BTRFS mode supports only the documented Ubuntu-style arrangement with
@and@homesubvolumes. A different BTRFS layout is not supported by the project. - Bootloader: the project documents support for GRUB2. Older GRUB versions are unsupported and a restore can leave the machine unbootable.
- Boot mode: note whether Mint boots with EFI or legacy firmware. EFI recovery from live media has extra requirements described below.
- Destination capacity: the selected device must have enough free space for the snapshots and their retention policy. No universal capacity threshold is published, because the requirement depends on the installation and the number of retained snapshots.
Choose rsync or BTRFS mode
Select the mode that matches the installed filesystem and layout rather than choosing by speed claims alone. Timeshift presents the available method during initial setup.

| Mode | How it stores snapshots | Compatibility | Important limits and characteristics |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rsync | Uses rsync and hard links to create successive filesystem snapshots. | The project describes rsync mode as supported across systems, making it the broad-compatibility choice. | It still needs a destination with adequate free space and does not turn excluded home directories into a personal-file backup. |
| BTRFS | Uses native BTRFS snapshots. | Requires BTRFS and the Ubuntu-style @ and @home subvolumes. |
The project characterizes BTRFS snapshots as fast and space-efficient, but does not promise a particular runtime or space saving on an individual computer. Other BTRFS layouts are unsupported. |
If you are unsure whether your installation has the required BTRFS subvolumes, use the filesystem and partition information in your disk-management utility before selecting BTRFS. Choosing rsync does not make an unsupported BTRFS layout compatible; it selects a different snapshot mechanism.
Choose where to save Timeshift snapshots
Timeshift defaults to a /timeshift directory on the root partition. The project allows other Linux partitions and recommends an external, non-system partition for the best separation from the operating-system disk.
| Destination | Advantages | Risks and practical checks |
|---|---|---|
| Root/system partition | Always present when Mint is running and requires no separate device. | A failing or badly damaged system disk can make both Mint and its snapshots unavailable. Check free space carefully. |
| Separate Linux partition | Keeps snapshots away from the root filesystem and can remain available if the root partition is corrupted. | If it is on the same physical disk, a disk-wide failure can still affect both partitions. Confirm that the partition mounts reliably. |
| External non-system device | Provides the strongest separation from the installed system disk and is useful for recovery from a damaged system partition. | It must be connected and mounted when scheduled snapshots run. Use an external hard drive for Timeshift snapshots with enough free space, and protect that drive from loss or failure as you would any other backup device. |
An external destination improves recovery options but is not, by itself, a complete disaster-recovery plan. Keep a separate copy of important personal files and make sure you can access the snapshot device when Mint is down.
Set up Timeshift in Linux Mint
Use the graphical Timeshift utility for the initial configuration. The exact wording of controls can vary slightly with the Mint release, but the workflow is the same.

- Open Timeshift. Search for Timeshift in the application menu and authenticate when Mint requests administrator privileges.
- Select the snapshot type. Choose rsync for a broadly compatible setup, or BTRFS only when the installed system uses BTRFS with the required
@and@homelayout. - Select a destination. Pick a separate Linux partition or an external non-system device when possible. Confirm that the device is mounted and has enough free space.
- Configure the schedule. Timeshift offers selectable levels including hourly, daily, weekly, monthly, and boot snapshots. The Linux Mint User Guide recommends automating daily and boot snapshots.
- Set retention. Enable only the levels you can afford to keep. More levels and longer retention consume more space; the exact number of snapshots to retain is your decision, not a universal Timeshift requirement.
- Review include and exclude rules. Leave the default home-directory exclusion in place if you are using Timeshift for system recovery, and use a separate file-backup tool for personal data.
- Create an initial snapshot. Start a snapshot manually after setup. Wait for it to finish, then confirm that it appears in Timeshift’s list before you depend on scheduled snapshots.
- Record the recovery device. Note which partition or external drive contains the snapshots and keep a live recovery USB available. A schedule is useful only when the destination is present and readable.
Run and maintain routine snapshots
Create a snapshot before risky changes
Open Timeshift and use its create-snapshot action before a major system upgrade, graphics-driver change, desktop customization, or experimental configuration edit. Give the snapshot a meaningful description if the interface offers one, so you can identify the change it precedes.
Watch destination space
Timeshift’s documentation warns that the selected device needs sufficient free space. If snapshots begin to fail or the device fills, reduce enabled snapshot levels, shorten retention, or disable schedules and create snapshots manually. Do not delete the only known-good snapshot until another recovery point exists.
Check that scheduled snapshots are actually visible
Occasionally open Timeshift with the destination connected and verify that recent scheduled snapshots appear. If the list is empty, check that the intended partition or external device is mounted and that you selected the same snapshot type and destination during setup.
Restore Linux Mint while it still boots
An online restore runs from the installed Mint system. It is the simplest recovery path when you can reach the desktop or a working graphical session.

- Protect current work. Save files, close applications, and connect the snapshot destination.
- Open Timeshift and select the snapshot that predates the problem. Check its date, description, and destination before proceeding.
- Choose Restore. Review the restore dialog’s target devices and included paths. Do not proceed if the selected root, boot, or destination partitions are not the ones belonging to the Mint installation you intend to repair.
- Start the restore and wait for it to complete. Avoid powering off the computer or disconnecting the snapshot device.
- Reboot when prompted. The project documents that an online restore requires a reboot to finish.
- Verify the result. Confirm that Mint starts, the failing system change is gone, and essential hardware and network services work. Restore personal files separately from your file-backup copy if needed.
A restore returns selected system content to the saved state; it is not a merge that preserves every later system change. If you explicitly included additional paths in Timeshift, inspect those choices before accepting the restore.
Restore Linux Mint when it will not boot
When the installed system cannot start, perform an offline restore from another running Linux environment. The project documents using an Ubuntu-compatible Live CD or USB, installing or launching Timeshift in that live session, and restoring the installed system. A Linux Mint live USB is a practical recovery medium, but the project’s stated procedure specifically refers to Ubuntu Live media.
- Create or obtain live media on a separate computer if necessary, and boot the affected machine from the live CD or USB.
- Use the correct firmware mode. If the installed Mint system uses EFI, boot the live media in EFI mode rather than legacy mode.
- Connect the snapshot device. Attach the external drive or mount the partition that contains the Timeshift snapshots. Confirm that the live session can read it.
- Install or launch Timeshift in the live environment. If it is not already present, use the live system’s package-management tools to install it before opening the utility.
- Locate the installed system and snapshots. Select the snapshot destination and identify the Mint root installation that should receive the restore.
- Map the EFI partition when required. On EFI systems, the project documentation requires the EFI partition to be mapped during restore. Select the installed system’s EFI partition, not an unrelated disk’s partition.
- Select the snapshot and restore. Review the target partitions and start the operation. Keep the live session running and the snapshot device connected until it finishes.
- Reboot into the installed system. Remove or bypass the live media when the machine restarts, then verify that Mint and the bootloader start normally.
Timeshift documents support for GRUB2 systems only. Recovery on another bootloader arrangement is not promised, and older GRUB versions are listed as unsupported; verify your bootloader before treating Timeshift as your sole recovery method.

BTRFS snapshot creation fails
First check that the system uses the required Ubuntu-style @ and @home subvolumes. The project also warns that a swap file inside @ or @home can prevent BTRFS snapshot creation. Move the swap file outside those subvolumes; the project gives a separate @swap subvolume as an example.
The snapshot list is empty
Reconnect and mount the destination, then reopen Timeshift and select the correct snapshot type. A snapshot stored on an external device will not appear while that device is disconnected. Also confirm that the live environment or installed system has permission to read the destination.
The restored system will not boot on an EFI computer
Repeat the recovery from live media booted in EFI mode and ensure that the EFI partition is mapped in the restore dialog. A restore performed without the required EFI mapping may leave the boot arrangement incomplete.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Restore warnings mention GRUB
Timeshift’s documented support is for GRUB2, and older GRUB versions are unsupported. Do not assume a successful file copy means the machine will boot; check the bootloader version and layout before relying on the snapshot.
Use Timeshift as one part of a backup plan
Timeshift is most valuable for fast operating-system rollback. It does not replace a personal-file backup, an offline copy, or recovery media. A practical Mint plan has three separate pieces:
- System snapshots: Timeshift snapshots on a separate partition or external non-system device.
- Personal-file backups: a tool and destination dedicated to documents, photos, music, mail, and other home-directory data.
- Recovery access: a tested Linux live USB or CD and the knowledge of which device contains the snapshots.
Test visibility before an emergency: connect the snapshot device, open Timeshift, confirm that a recent snapshot is listed, and make sure you know whether the installed machine uses EFI and which partition is the EFI system partition. A snapshot you cannot locate or restore is not a dependable recovery point.
Quick Recap
Quick decision checklist
- Use rsync when you need the broad compatibility Timeshift documents across systems.
- Use BTRFS only with BTRFS and the supported
@/@homeUbuntu-style layout. - Prefer a separate Linux partition or external non-system device over the root partition.
- Enable daily and boot snapshots if the destination can support their retention.
- Keep home-directory data in a separate backup system.
- For a running Mint installation, restore in Timeshift and reboot to complete the online restore.
- For a non-booting installation, use Ubuntu-compatible live media, boot EFI systems in EFI mode, map the EFI partition, and restore to the installed Mint system.
- Check GRUB2 compatibility, BTRFS layout, swap-file placement, destination space, and snapshot visibility before an emergency.
