Short answer: do not automatically restore your backup after erasing an iPhone that may have been tampered with. Apple says that if you erase the device because you are concerned that malicious software was installed, restoring a backup can reinstall the problem. First secure your accounts from a device and network you trust, check whether sharing or app access explains what you are seeing, and decide whether a clean setup without a backup is necessary. A suspected infection is not proof of malware: an unfamiliar app, unusual battery use, pop-ups, or an account alert can also result from ordinary software problems, unwanted sharing, or stolen credentials.
This guide separates ordinary iPhone migration from suspected-malware recovery. It explains what to preserve, when Apple’s no-backup warning takes priority, how to erase and set up the phone, and when specialist help is warranted.

Start by identifying what you are actually dealing with
The safest recovery path depends on the reason for your concern. Symptoms alone do not establish that malicious code is present, so avoid destroying evidence or deleting data before you understand the scenario.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteAn unfamiliar app or unexpected behavior
Check the app’s name, developer, installation date, permissions, and whether it appears in your Apple Account purchase history. A crash, rapid battery drain, heat, browser redirect, or persistent pop-up can have benign causes such as a defective app, a configuration profile, an iOS bug, or an account that is signed in elsewhere. Delete an app you do not recognize only after recording what it is and taking screenshots if you may need support or an investigation.

Unwanted sharing, tracking, or access
Someone with access to your Apple Account, location sharing, messages, photos, calendars, or a shared password may create a safety problem without installing malware. Apple recommends reviewing Safety Check before a factory reset in this situation. A reset cannot by itself revoke access from another device or fix a reused password.
Possible physical tampering
If another person had unsupervised access to the iPhone and you believe they installed malicious software or changed security settings, treat that as the high-risk case covered by Apple’s personal-safety guidance. Use the clean-setup procedure below instead of restoring a complete backup.
An Apple threat notification
An Apple threat notification is different from a generic warning in a browser or an unsolicited text. Apple describes these notices as high-confidence alerts about possible individual targeting by highly sophisticated attacks. Verify one only by signing in directly at account.apple.com; never use a sign-in link in the message. Follow the notification-specific guidance and seek expert assistance.

Secure accounts before you erase anything
If the iPhone or its network may be monitored, use a different device and a network you trust. A library, workplace, or friend’s device may be preferable to the phone you are investigating. Do not enter your Apple Account password into a page reached from a suspicious message.
- Change the Apple Account password. Sign in directly through Apple’s account site or use a trusted Apple device. Choose a unique password that has not been used elsewhere.
- Review devices and sign-in activity. Remove devices you do not recognize and check trusted phone numbers and recovery methods. If you cannot regain control, contact Apple Support from a trusted channel.
- Protect exposed accounts. Change passwords for email, banking, password managers, social networks, and any service that used the same password. Start with email because it can reset other accounts.
- Revoke suspicious sessions and tokens. Use each service’s security page to sign out of unfamiliar browsers, rotate app-specific passwords, and remove unknown recovery addresses or authentication devices.
- Preserve evidence when safety or legal issues are involved. Photograph unfamiliar apps, profiles, messages, account alerts, and dates. Do not forward suspicious attachments to another phone or install an unverified “cleaner.”
Changing credentials from a trusted environment matters more than backing up immediately. A backup of a compromised account does not secure that account.
Check Safety Check before a factory reset
Apple’s factory-reset guidance points to Safety Check’s Manage Sharing & Access feature because some apparent infections are actually unwanted sharing or app permissions. On a recent iOS release, open Settings, choose Privacy & Security, tap Safety Check, and select Manage Sharing & Access. Labels can change between iOS versions, so use the current labels shown on the device.

Review people and apps that can access your location, photos, calendars, contacts, microphone, camera, and other information. Remove access you do not recognize, check devices signed in to your Apple Account, and update passwords where prompted. Safety Check is a privacy and account-review tool, not a forensic malware detector; a clean result does not prove that the phone is free of malicious code.
Apple describes the complete reset procedure in Restore device to factory settings. Read it before starting because erasing removes local content and settings.
Choose the correct path: migration or suspected tampering
| Situation | What to do with a backup | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Replacing a phone, repairing ordinary software trouble, or moving to a new iPhone with no credible tampering concern | Use Apple’s normal iCloud or computer restore process after confirming the backup and account are yours. | Restore is a supported way to move content and settings. |
| Possible physical tampering or malicious software installed on the iPhone | Erase and set up without restoring a backup. | Apple warns that a backup may reinstall the malicious software in this scenario. |
| Unwanted sharing or app access with no evidence of malicious installation | Review Safety Check and account security first; reset only if needed. | The cause may be permissions or credentials rather than code on the phone. |
| Apple threat notification or concern about targeted spyware | Follow Apple’s notification guidance and obtain expert help before choosing a restore strategy. | The case may require specialized advice and evidence preservation. |
The confidence that a backup predates the concern does not override Apple’s warning when tampering and malicious installation are plausible. Do not assume that photos, messages, or another particular category of backup data has been certified safe; Apple’s cited guidance does not make that blanket determination.
What ordinary iPhone backup and restore can do
For a normal migration, Apple supports two main restore routes. The current iPhone guide, Restore all content to iPhone from a backup, describes restoring from iCloud during setup and restoring a computer backup after connecting the iPhone over USB.
iCloud backup
On a functioning phone, the usual path is Settings > [your name] > iCloud > iCloud Backup > Back Up Now. Keep the phone connected to Wi-Fi and power until the operation finishes, then note the latest backup date and size. During setup of an erased or new iPhone, choose the option to restore from an iCloud backup and select the relevant date. The exact wording can vary by iOS release.
Computer backup
A Mac or Windows computer can hold a local backup. Connect the iPhone with a compatible USB data cable; connector compatibility depends on the specific iPhone and computer, so choose a cable that fits both rather than assuming a particular connector. In Finder, Apple Devices, or iTunes (depending on the computer and software), select the iPhone and choose the available option to restore a backup. The cable is needed for this computer route, not for an iCloud restore.

These instructions explain supported migration, not a way around the suspected-tampering decision. If the reason for erasing is possible malicious installation, stop after the erase and use a clean setup instead.
How to erase an iPhone when tampering is plausible
Before erasing, make sure you can sign in to the Apple Account associated with the phone and that you have secured important accounts from a trusted environment. Keep screenshots or other evidence you may need. Then follow Apple’s current on-device labels:
- Open Settings.
- Tap General.
- Choose Transfer or Reset iPhone.
- Tap Erase All Content and Settings.
- Read the warnings, enter the device passcode or Apple Account password when requested, and follow the prompts. If the phone offers an eSIM or cellular-plan choice, make the decision that matches your carrier and replacement plan.
Erasing removes local content, settings, and installed apps. It does not automatically change passwords used on other services, repair a compromised email account, or remove access that another person still has through a separate device. Those account actions must be completed independently.
Set up without restoring the backup
When the reset was prompted by suspected tampering or malicious installation, choose the setup option that configures the iPhone as new. Do not select an iCloud or computer backup simply to make the phone look familiar again. Sign in to the secured Apple Account, install the latest available iOS update, and enable a passcode and two-factor authentication.
Reinstall only apps you recognize, from the App Store, after checking the developer and why you need each app. Avoid copying configuration profiles, unknown certificates, or automation files from the old phone. Re-enable location, microphone, camera, photo, Bluetooth, and contact access only when an app’s function requires it. This slower process gives you a chance to notice an unwanted app or permission rather than reproducing the entire old environment.
Recover data selectively and document its source
A clean setup does not mean that every piece of personal data is lost, but recovery should be deliberate. Start with information whose origin you can assess and whose reintroduction does not recreate the old configuration.

- Passkeys and authentication codes: Re-enroll accounts using their official recovery process. Keep recovery codes in a secure location and remove old devices from each account.
There is no Apple statement that certifies a specific backup category as harmless after suspected tampering. If you cannot determine where data came from or whether an account was controlled by someone else, ask Apple Support or a qualified security professional before importing it.

Apple states on its security-update guidance that “Keeping your software up to date is the single most important thing you can do to maintain the security of your Apple products.” The statement appears on Apple’s April 2, 2026 page, Update iOS to protect your iPhone from web attacks. Open Settings > General > Software Update and install the current update offered for the device. Keep the phone connected to power and Wi-Fi as required by the on-screen instructions.
Do not rely on an old version number or a menu path copied from an earlier article. Apple changes supported releases and labels; the update screen on the iPhone is the authoritative place to see what is available for that model.
When Lockdown Mode is appropriate
Lockdown Mode is optional, restrictive protection for the very small number of people who may be personally targeted by highly sophisticated attacks, including mercenary spyware. It is not a general malware scanner or a routine substitute for account security.
Apple’s guide, Harden your devices with Lockdown Mode, explains the affected features and current settings path. On supported software, open Settings > Privacy & Security > Lockdown Mode, read the restrictions, and turn it on only when the threat model justifies the trade-offs. Some message attachments, web technologies, calls, invitations, and sharing features are limited. If you are not facing a credible targeted-attack concern, concentrate on updates, unique passwords, two-factor authentication, and permission review instead.

Because a notification concerns possible individual targeting, obtain expert assistance rather than experimenting with repeated resets. Apple recommends specialist help for notification recipients, including Access Now’s Digital Security Helpline. Preserve the notification and relevant account information, avoid deleting evidence unnecessarily, and use a trusted device for communications.
After the clean setup: a security checklist
- Confirm the latest iOS update is installed.
- Use a strong, unique device passcode and enable two-factor authentication for the Apple Account.
- Review signed-in devices and trusted numbers after setup.
- Turn on Find My and record recovery information somewhere safe.
- Install only necessary apps from the App Store and inspect permissions.
- Check Safety Check again if sharing concerns return.
- Update the operating systems and browsers on computers that access the iPhone or its accounts.
- Create a new backup only after the phone and accounts are secured. Label its date so you can distinguish it from older backups.
Troubleshooting common recovery mistakes
The phone keeps showing the same suspicious behavior
Verify that the behavior is not caused by a reinstalled app, a browser notification, a shared account, or a compromised service. Remove recently installed apps one at a time, review permissions, and check account sessions from a trusted device. If behavior persists after a clean setup and current iOS, contact Apple Support or a qualified security professional rather than repeatedly restoring older backups.
You cannot access the Apple Account after erasing
Stop setup and recover the account through Apple’s official account-recovery process from a trusted device. Do not ask an unfamiliar person or an unsolicited “support” number for the password. Activation and account locks are security controls, not evidence by themselves that the phone contains malware.
You restored a backup by mistake
If the suspected-tampering concern remains, disconnect the phone from sensitive accounts, preserve relevant evidence, secure passwords from a trusted device, and erase it again using the clean-setup path. Ask Apple Support or a security professional whether additional evidence or account actions are needed before repeating the process.
You need an old file urgently
Do not restore the entire device just to retrieve one document. Use a trusted computer or cloud service to obtain the individual file, keep it separate, and import it only after assessing its source. For regulated, financial, or legal data, obtain professional advice before opening unknown files.
The practical decision
For ordinary migration, iCloud and computer backups are convenient, supported choices. For an iPhone that may have been physically tampered with and had malicious software installed, Apple’s personal-safety guidance changes the priority: secure accounts, review sharing, erase the phone, and set it up without restoring a backup. Recover data selectively, update iOS, and escalate Apple threat notifications or credible targeted-attack concerns to Apple and qualified specialists.
