Secure your important accounts from a trusted device, make and verify a backup of essential data, and reset your Galaxy only if needed. Then restore selectively, update the phone, and reinstall apps from trusted stores. A backup can preserve information, but Samsung does not certify restored backups as malware-free.
First, treat suspicious behavior as a warning—not proof of a hack
Pop-ups, battery drain, or unusual performance do not by themselves establish that someone compromised your phone. Avoid entering passwords or handling sensitive recovery tasks on the Galaxy if you believe it may be unsafe. Use a separate trusted device to secure your primary email and other important accounts, review active sessions and recovery options where available, and contact your bank or carrier if you see signs of financial or phone-number account abuse. These are general precautions, not steps Samsung specifically prescribes.

Samsung Canada recommends downloading apps only from Galaxy Store or Google Play, avoiding suspicious links in apps, texts, and email, and enabling Auto Blocker. Before choosing a backup method, make a short inventory of data that matters and may exist only on the phone:

- Photos, videos, documents, and downloads
- Contacts, messages, and schedules
- Authenticator access, recovery codes, or other account-recovery information
- App-specific files or information you cannot easily recreate
Do not assume a phone backup includes every app’s private data or account credentials. Samsung France notes that information stored only on a lost or stolen phone cannot be restored; its guidance is specific to France. See Samsung France: backing up and restoring Galaxy data.
Choose a backup method and check the saved copy
Samsung documents several ways to back up Galaxy data. Which categories and menus are available depends on the model, software, region, and account setup. No option should be treated as a guaranteed, complete image of the phone.

Samsung’s Smart Switch guide lists transferable categories but warns that some call-log, email-setting, and Internet-setting transfers may not work across certain operating-system or app versions. Samsung UK describes Samsung account, Google account, and Smart Switch options in its Galaxy backup and restore guide. Samsung Gulf’s regional overview of Galaxy backup methods covers Samsung Cloud and Google Drive. These pages describe regional offerings; available services and data coverage are not universal.

Before you erase anything
- Confirm the backup completed and that you can identify its destination or account.
- Check that the irreplaceable files you listed are present in the copy or separately saved.
- Make sure you know the screen-lock credentials and the account passwords needed to set up the phone again.
Reset only if other steps have not resolved the problem
Samsung describes a factory reset as a last resort in its security-breach guidance. A factory data reset erases personal files, downloaded apps, and settings, so it is a destructive step—not a backup method.
Samsung Canada’s Settings path
- Open Settings > General management > Reset > Factory data reset. The names or location may differ by provider and software version.
- Review the reset information, then follow the on-screen prompts. The phone may request its screen-lock credentials and Samsung account password.
- Proceed only after confirming your backup and that you can sign in to the accounts needed for setup.

Samsung UK says most Android devices use Google Factory Reset Protection. If you are giving the phone to someone else, its reset guidance advises removing the Google account before resetting; if you are keeping the phone, have the account credentials available for setup. During setup, sign in to the account that holds your backup and choose its restore option, or connect the backup destination and use Smart Switch as directed for your model. Samsung documents restoring a Smart Switch backup to a phone, but does not guarantee that every category will transfer in every combination of devices or software versions.

- Restore essential contacts, photos, documents, and other data you need first.
- Reinstall apps you still need from Galaxy Store or Google Play rather than relying on an old installation.
- Install available software updates, then review app permissions and account sessions.
- Add less-essential data or apps only when you have a clear reason to do so.

If the suspicious behavior continues
If the problem persists after a reset and a clean setup, Samsung Canada recommends contacting Samsung support, visiting a service center, or scheduling a repair. Its advice is scoped to Canada, and contact options may vary by location: Samsung Canada support guidance.
