How to Back Up and Restore a Nothing Phone (3) Before a Software Update

Before installing a normal Nothing Phone (3) over-the-air update, run Settings > Google > Backup > Back up now, review Backup details, connect to stable Wi-Fi, and charge the phone to at least 50% (or leave it connected to a charger). If you later have to erase the phone—especially for a beta rollback—restore the Google backup during Android setup with the same Google Account. A routine update normally does not require wiping or restoring the phone.

What to do before you update

Nothing documents Google’s standard Android backup as the backup method for its phones. The safest sequence is to start a manual backup, inspect what Google recorded, protect any files or app data that matter, and then install the update under the recommended power and network conditions.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  1. Open Settings > Google > Backup and tap Back up now.
  2. Open Backup details and check that the account, recent backup time, apps and data you care about are listed.
  3. Keep the phone on a stable Wi-Fi connection. For the update itself, have at least 50% battery or keep the phone connected to a charger.
  4. Open Settings > System > System updates and check for the available release.

These instructions apply to a normal stable OTA update. A beta rollback is different: Nothing warns that rollback erases all phone data, so treat it as a factory-reset-level event and plan to restore during setup.

Before you start: confirm the account and conditions

Identify the Google Account displayed in the Backup screen before you begin. That is the account you will need during setup if the phone is later reset or rolled back. If the Phone (3) has multiple accounts, do not assume that every account holds the same backup. Record the account address in a secure place and make sure you know its sign-in method.

Keep the screen lock enabled. Google says backed-up device data is uploaded to Google and encrypted, and that some data receives end-to-end encryption using the phone’s screen-lock PIN, pattern or password. This is not a promise that every category has identical end-to-end encryption coverage, but losing the screen-lock credential can make protected data harder to use.

Use stable Wi-Fi for both backup and update work. A mobile connection may not provide the same reliability or may not be used for every background operation. Leave the phone undisturbed while it works, especially if you are relying on the automatic routine rather than the manual command.

What Google’s Android backup includes—and what it may miss

Google lists several device categories that can be included in an Android backup:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Installed apps and app data, where the individual app supports Android backup.
  • Call history.
  • Contacts.
  • Device settings.
  • SMS and MMS messages.

Some information is tied to particular Google apps rather than being a universal phone image. Google identifies RCS conversations in Google Messages, call settings and blocked numbers in Phone by Google, and pictures and videos in Google Photos as examples. You need to use those apps and their own backup or sync features for the corresponding data.

Do not interpret a successful device backup as a bit-for-bit copy of the Phone (3). Google explicitly cautions that not every app can back up or restore all settings and data. An app can be listed as backed up while still requiring you to sign in again, download offline content, or reconfigure settings after restoration.

Google says a backup can take up to 24 hours to complete fully. That is a maximum completion window in its guidance, not a promise that every backup needs a full day. The phone can show a recent backup while some app-specific work is still finishing, so check the details before you update.

Google describes backed-up device data as uploaded to Google and encrypted. It says some data receives end-to-end encryption using the phone’s screen-lock PIN, pattern or password. That wording does not establish that every category is end-to-end encrypted, so keep your screen lock enabled and do not assume encryption coverage is identical for every item.

Run a manual backup immediately before the update

1. Open the backup controls

On the Nothing Phone (3), open Settings, choose Google, then Backup. If more than one Google Account is present on the phone, confirm that the account shown is the one you intend to use later for restoration.

2. Start the backup

Tap Back up now. Nothing’s support instructions use this manual command when a user needs a backup immediately; it is more predictable than waiting for the automatic routine to run at an unknown time.

3. Inspect Backup details

Open Backup details after starting the process. Review the categories and applications shown, and note the time of the latest completed backup. If an important app is absent or reports limited support, use that app’s own export, sync or account-based backup option before proceeding. The official Android guidance does not promise that every app’s private data can be captured by the system backup.

4. Give the process time

Leave the phone connected to Wi-Fi and power while the backup finishes. Google allows up to 24 hours for full completion, particularly when there is a large amount of app or media data. Do not start the update solely because the phone is plugged in; charging by itself does not prove that the automatic or manual backup completed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. Recheck after waiting

If the latest-backup time has not changed, run Back up now again and look for any status or category that remains incomplete. A fresh timestamp is useful evidence that the command ran, but it is still not a guarantee that an unsupported app’s private files were captured. Check high-value apps separately before accepting the update prompt.

Manual backup versus the automatic routine

Nothing describes an automatic backup condition rather than a fixed daily clock. Its guidance says the phone should be connected to Wi-Fi, left on standby, and charging for two hours. Use the manual command when you are about to update; use the automatic routine as background protection, not as evidence that a fresh backup exists.

Approach How it starts Timing condition Best use Important limitation
Manual backup You tap Settings > Google > Backup > Back up now. Runs when initiated; completion can take up to 24 hours according to Google. Right before a planned stable update or a reset. Only supported categories and apps are included; verify Backup details.
Automatic backup Runs in the background under Nothing’s described conditions. Wi-Fi, standby and charging for two hours. Routine ongoing protection when the phone is idle overnight or between uses. Being connected to a charger alone does not establish that a backup ran or finished.

The practical difference is control. Manual backup lets you choose the moment and then inspect the result. Automatic backup reduces the chance of having no recent copy, but it depends on all three conditions and can occur at a time you are not watching. Neither method overrides an app that does not support Android backup.

Check important apps and files separately

Use the categories in Backup details as a checklist, not as a guarantee. Before updating, verify the things that would be difficult or impossible to replace:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Open Google Photos and confirm that the photos and videos you need are synced to the correct account.
  • In Google Messages, confirm that RCS conversations are using the account and sync behavior you expect.
  • Check contacts and call history after the device backup reports completion.
  • Open high-value apps—such as authenticators, password managers, finance apps, games with local progress, note tools and messaging apps—and look for their own backup, export or cloud-sync controls.
  • Preserve irreplaceable documents, recordings and other files through a storage workflow you already trust. The documented Nothing and Google instructions do not establish a Phone (3)-specific complete local computer-image backup method.

Do not uninstall an app or clear its data merely to test restoration. Instead, record the account or sign-in method it uses and any recovery codes that the app provides. This avoids turning a precautionary update into an avoidable account-recovery problem.

Pay particular attention to data that is stored only on the handset. Google’s categories describe what Android can back up, not every file in every app. If an app offers an export or cloud-sync control, complete it while the old installation still opens normally and verify that the destination account shows the new data.

Install a normal stable OTA update

Prepare the phone

Nothing’s OTA guidance recommends a stable Wi-Fi connection, at least 50% battery or continuous connection to a charger, and a backup of crucial data. A compatible USB-C charger is sufficient; Nothing does not require a special charger for this procedure.

Check for the update

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap System.
  3. Tap System updates.
  4. Check for the offered version and follow the on-screen installation prompts.

Nothing characterizes ordinary OTA updates as generally safe while still recommending a backup as a precaution. “Generally safe” is not a guarantee that an update can never cause data loss, interrupt an installation or expose an app-compatibility issue. Keep the phone powered and avoid deliberately interrupting the process once installation has started.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

After the phone restarts

Unlock the phone and allow apps and Google services time to finish updating. Check the items that mattered before the update: contacts, recent messages, photos, files and the settings of critical apps. If everything is present, there is no documented need to wipe the phone or perform a restore simply because the operating system version changed.

If an app appears to be missing immediately after the restart, give setup and downloads time to complete over Wi-Fi before assuming the backup failed. Then open the app and complete any sign-in, permission or account verification it requests. Android restoration can return the app package without returning every local preference or offline file.

How restoration works after a reset or failed update

Restoration is normally part of Android setup

Google’s general instructions place restoration in the device-setup flow. After a reset, replacement phone or data-erasing recovery, connect to the network, sign in with the Google Account associated with the backup, and follow the setup prompts that offer to restore backed-up data. The exact screens and choices can vary by phone model and Android version.

The cited Google guidance does not describe a standard in-place “restore backup” button for a phone that completed a routine OTA update and still works. Do not factory-reset a functioning Phone (3) just to force a restore; a reset erases current local data and moves you into the setup process where restoration is offered.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Allow restoration to finish

Setup and app restoration can take time. Keep the phone on Wi-Fi and power, and expect some applications to download after the initial setup screen. Open restored apps individually and complete any sign-in, permission or encryption prompts they require.

Respect Android-version compatibility

Google warns that a backup made on a higher Android version cannot be restored to a phone running a lower Android version. This matters if you are restoring onto an older build, a replacement device or a beta/stable combination. Update the destination to a compatible version when possible rather than assuming the backup is damaged.

What restoration can and cannot prove

Seeing the backup offered during setup confirms that Google found a compatible account backup; it does not prove that every app’s private data will return. After setup, compare the most important categories with the notes you made before the reset. Reauthenticate apps, restore app-specific exports where necessary, and check messages, contacts and photos rather than relying only on the number of apps shown as installed.

Beta installation and rollback: the data-erasing case

Nothing’s OS 5.0 beta instructions are separate from its normal OTA guidance. Joining or installing a beta should begin with a backup of important data. More importantly, Nothing explicitly warns that rolling back from the beta erases all phone data. Plan as though rollback is a factory reset: finish the backup first, confirm what it contains, and make sure you can sign in to the associated Google Account.

Build prerequisite listed by Nothing

The beta instructions list the Phone (3) stable build Metroid-V4.1-260814-1733 as a prerequisite for that beta flow. Beta availability and prerequisites can change by release and region, so verify the current Nothing beta page and the build requirement shown there before following those instructions. This build is not a requirement for an ordinary stable OTA update.

What to expect after rollback

Because rollback erases the phone, restoration should occur during the subsequent Android setup. Sign in with the same Google Account, select the available backup, and allow setup to reinstall supported apps and data. The same limits apply: apps may not restore all private data, and a higher-version backup cannot be restored onto a lower Android version.

Do not treat beta rollback like an ordinary update that merely changes system files. Before confirming the rollback, verify the backup timestamp, inspect its categories, preserve irreplaceable files through your trusted storage method, and ensure that any app-specific exports are accessible. Once the erase begins, local-only data that was never copied may not be recoverable.

Troubleshoot the common backup and restore decisions

The phone was charging, but there is no recent backup

Charging alone is not the automatic-backup trigger described by Nothing. Connect to Wi-Fi, leave the phone on standby while charging for the stated two-hour condition, or run Back up now yourself. Then inspect Backup details rather than relying on the charging icon.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

An app or its data is missing from Backup details

Google’s warning is explicit: not all apps can back up or restore all settings and data. Check that app for an account sync, export file, cloud backup or recovery-code feature. If none exists, treat its local data as at risk before an update or rollback.

Restoration is unavailable during setup

Confirm that you selected the Google Account used for the backup and that the destination is not running a lower Android version than the one that created the backup. If the account and version are compatible, continue setup on Wi-Fi and allow time for the backup and apps to appear; restoration is not always instantaneous.

The stable update succeeded and the phone works normally

Keep using the phone and verify critical apps and files. The official instructions do not call for wiping a successfully updated device to restore a backup, and doing so would erase the current local state.

The backup appears older than expected

Check the account selector and the timestamp in Backup details, then run Back up now while connected to Wi-Fi. Remember that Google allows up to 24 hours for complete processing. If the timestamp remains old, do not assume that charging overnight created a fresh copy; investigate each important app’s own sync or export option first.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You are moving between beta and stable software

Separate a normal update from a rollback. A stable OTA does not ordinarily call for an erase, while Nothing’s beta rollback warning says all phone data is erased. Confirm which operation the on-screen instructions describe and use the rollback checklist, not the shorter OTA checklist, when an erase is involved.

A practical pre-update checklist

  • Account: You know which Google Account holds the backup and can sign in to it.
  • Manual backup: You ran Back up now.
  • Verification: You reviewed Backup details and the latest backup time.
  • App coverage: Critical apps have been checked for their own sync or export options.
  • Files: Irreplaceable files are preserved through a storage method you trust.
  • Network: The phone is on stable Wi-Fi.
  • Power: Battery is at least 50% or the phone will remain connected to a charger.
  • Update path: You will use Settings > System > System updates.
  • Beta caution: If this is a rollback, you have accepted that all phone data will be erased and have planned setup-time restoration.

Following this sequence gives a stable OTA update the protection Nothing and Google actually document, while keeping the much higher data-erasure risk of beta rollback separate.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is plugging in the Nothing Phone (3) enough to trigger a backup?

No. Nothing describes the automatic routine as requiring Wi-Fi, standby and charging for two hours. Run Settings > Google > Backup > Back up now when you need a current copy, then check Backup details.

How long should I wait for the backup?

Google says a backup can take up to 24 hours to complete fully. That is a maximum completion window, not a requirement that every backup takes a day. Check the latest time and included categories before updating.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does Google Backup copy every app and file?

No. Google lists apps and app data, call history, contacts, device settings and SMS/MMS, but warns that not all apps can back up or restore all settings and data. Verify important apps separately and preserve irreplaceable files through a storage method you trust.

Do I need to restore a backup after a normal OTA update?

Usually not. If the Phone (3) updates and still works, the documented guidance does not call for wiping it or using an in-place restore button. Check your important apps and files and continue using the phone.

Where does restoration happen after a reset?

Google places restoration in Android device setup. Connect to Wi-Fi, sign in with the Google Account that holds the backup, and follow the prompts. Apps may continue downloading and may require sign-in or additional setup.

Can a backup from a newer Android version restore to an older one?

Google warns that a backup made on a higher Android version cannot be restored to a phone running a lower Android version. Use a compatible destination version when possible.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is beta rollback safer than a normal update?

Treat it as higher risk. Nothing explicitly warns that OS beta rollback erases all phone data. Complete a manual backup, inspect it, preserve important files, and expect to restore during setup after the erase.

Is the Nothing beta build Metroid-V4.1-260814-1733 required for every update?

No. Nothing lists that stable Phone (3) build as a prerequisite for the referenced OS 5.0 beta flow. It is not a requirement for an ordinary stable OTA update, and beta requirements can change by release and region.

The Bottom Line

For a normal Nothing Phone (3) OTA update, tap Settings > Google > Backup > Back up now, inspect Backup details, use stable Wi-Fi, and install from Settings > System > System updates with at least 50% battery or a charger connected. A beta rollback is different: Nothing says it erases all data, so verify the backup and plan to restore with the same Google Account during Android setup.
