Files already synced to Google Drive or another cloud service may still be available even when the Chromebook is unusable. Files saved only in local folders such as Downloads or Linux files are a separate risk. Do not run ChromeOS Recovery or Powerwash until you understand the consequence: Google says these procedures erase local data, and recovery is an operating-system repair—not a way to extract files from a Chromebook that cannot boot.
Start by separating synced files from local files
A Chromebook can keep documents in several places, and the location determines what you can retrieve without starting the device.

Files that may already be safe in your account
Using another computer, phone, or tablet, sign in to the Google account used on the Chromebook. Open Google Drive and check the folders where you normally saved documents. Also check any other cloud service you deliberately used. If a file was synchronized before the Chromebook failed, you should be able to open or download it from that service without touching the Chromebook.

Files that may exist only on the Chromebook
Files in the ChromeOS Downloads folder are local unless you copied or moved them elsewhere. Files used by the Linux development environment are also handled separately from ordinary Drive files. A file that was visible in the Files app is not automatically backed up just because the Chromebook uses a Google account.
Make a short inventory before troubleshooting: which files are confirmed in Drive, which were probably in Downloads, whether Linux was enabled, and whether an external storage device was used. The title alone cannot establish whether local files on a particular unbootable Chromebook are recoverable.
Read this data-loss warning before recovery or reset
Stop if an unbacked-up local file matters. Google Chromebook Help’s “Recover your Chromebook” guidance states: “Recovery permanently erases everything on your Chromebook’s hard drive, even your downloaded files.” ChromeOS Recovery removes and reinstalls the operating system; it is not a file-extraction procedure.

It is a factory reset that deletes local files, including items in Downloads. Google says files in Google Drive and on external storage are not deleted by Powerwash, but that protection does not extend to files stored only on the Chromebook’s internal storage.
If you have irreplaceable local files and the Chromebook will not start, do not authorize Recovery, Powerwash, or storage replacement merely because those options appear on screen. Contact the Chromebook manufacturer or a qualified repair provider first. Ask specifically whether they can diagnose the hardware while preserving the internal data, and explain that you do not authorize an erase-and-reinstall until the file situation is understood. Google’s general help does not establish a recovery outcome for every model, failure, or storage condition.
Try the non-destructive power checks first
These checks address power and charging problems without intentionally erasing storage. They are troubleshooting steps, not a promise that files will be recovered.

In short, thumb drives can meet the needs of different customers.
- Swivel Design: With the 360° swivel design, all the ports of the thumb drives 10 pack can be hidden inside the metal casing. When needed, simply swivel the casing gently and the ports will automatically expose, making it convenient for you to insert and remove. This design is not only fashionable and beautiful but also more user-friendly, whether you'd like your flash drive for photos, flash drive for video storage, or memory sticks for computers. In addition, the swivel design can effectively protect the interface from damage and pollution, increasing the service life of the flash USB drive.
- Portability: The small hole on the thumbdrive USB is designed for lanyards, which is convenient to carry. Besides, the USB flash drive keychain can also be tied through the small hole to prevent loss. This design is very thoughtful and reflects the humanized design concept of the memorias USB flash drive.
- Plug and Play: You can use the computer storage flash drive immediately for data storage or backup without any additional installation after inserting it into the computer. This plug and play feature makes the laptop storage drive a very convenient external ssd. You can copy the required data files to the external drive at any time without worrying about computer system compatibility issues. In addition, the design of the external flash drive enables it to be quickly recognized by the system after being inserted into the computer. (NOTE: Please check if your device has a USB-A port before purchasing. If not, a USB-C hub is needed.)
- FAT32 format: The default system format for 8GB flash drive is FAT32. FAT32 USB flash drive is widely applicable, such as in televisions, DVD players, vehicles, printers, embroidery machines, etc. Be patient if you have problems with system recognition. It may take some time for initial recognition, but it will happen.
- Test the outlet. Plug another device into the same outlet, or move the Chromebook charger to a known-working outlet.
- Check both charger connections. Firmly reconnect the charger at the wall and at the Chromebook. Inspect for a loose connection or a visibly damaged cable. Do not use damaged equipment.
- Allow time to charge. If the Chromebook shows any sign that it is charging, leave it connected for at least 30 minutes before trying to start it again. Google’s power guidance specifies this minimum charging period.
- Try the normal power control. After charging, press the Chromebook’s power button normally. Disconnect unnecessary accessories while testing so a peripheral cannot complicate the symptom.
- Use Google’s hardware-reset procedure if it still will not start or charge. The exact hardware-reset action depends on the Chromebook and is documented in Google’s “Chromebook won’t turn on or won’t charge” guidance. Follow that procedure for the model rather than guessing at a key combination.
- Escalate persistent failure. If charging and the hardware reset do not resolve the problem, Google recommends contacting the manufacturer. Tell support that preserving local files is important before accepting any recovery or reset step.
A Chromebook that powers on after these checks should be backed up immediately, before further troubleshooting. Copy local files to Google Drive or external storage while the system is accessible, and create a separate Linux backup if Linux was enabled.

Back up files if the Chromebook starts even briefly
Copy ordinary local files to Drive
- Open the Files app and select
Downloadsor another local folder. - Select the files or folders that are not already present in Drive.
- Copy or move them into
Google Drivein the Files app, then wait for synchronization to finish. - From another device, sign in to the same Google account and confirm that the files open from Drive. Verification matters because a file that appears in the Drive folder may still be waiting to sync.
For a second copy, connect external storage and copy the files there as well. Keep the external copy disconnected after the transfer so an accidental reset cannot affect it. Google says Powerwash does not delete files on external storage, but the storage device can still fail or be lost, so two copies are safer than one.
Back up Linux development-environment data separately
Linux files and apps use a separate backup and restore flow in ChromeOS. While the Chromebook is accessible, open ChromeOS Settings, go to the Linux development environment section, and use its manual backup control. Save the backup to a location you can access independently of the Chromebook.
Restoring the full Linux environment to another Chromebook can depend on processor architecture. Google documents a way to copy files from a backup when the source and destination architectures differ, but that is a file-copy operation rather than a promise that every Linux app or environment component will run unchanged. Preserve the backup itself even if you plan to restore only selected files.
Identify what the recovery screen means
A screen saying that ChromeOS is missing or damaged indicates an operating-system recovery path. It does not indicate that the screen can browse or export files from the internal drive. Treat the appearance of this screen as a decision point: either the local data is already backed up, or you should stop and seek data-preserving assistance.

Choose an OS-recovery method only when local data is not needed
| Method | When it is available | What you need | Data consequence |
|---|---|---|---|
| Internet recovery | A supported Chromebook displays the Internet-recovery option and can connect to the internet | The Chromebook and an internet connection | ChromeOS is reinstalled and local files are erased |
| USB recovery media | The recovery screen does not provide usable Internet recovery, or internet access is unavailable | Another Chromebook or a Windows or Mac computer with Chrome, plus a USB flash drive of at least 8 GB | Creating the recovery drive erases the USB drive; running recovery erases local Chromebook files |
| Manufacturer or qualified repair assessment | Unbacked local files matter, or the Chromebook remains unresponsive | The device, its charger, and a clear request to preserve data | Outcome is device-specific; do not authorize an erase before discussing preservation |
Internet recovery on supported devices
If the recovery screen offers Internet recovery and you have already confirmed that local files are backed up or no longer needed, follow the on-screen instructions. The process downloads and reinstalls ChromeOS. It repairs the operating system; it does not copy files out of the failed installation.
If the option does not appear, do not interpret its absence as proof that the storage is empty or that files are unrecoverable. It only means that this recovery path is not available in the current situation.
USB recovery media
Google’s USB route requires another Chromebook or a Windows/Mac computer with Chrome and a USB flash drive with at least 8 GB of capacity. Creating recovery media erases that USB drive, so copy anything important from it before starting.
- On the working computer, use Google’s Chromebook recovery utility and follow its prompts to create recovery media.
- When the utility asks for the Chromebook model, use the model information shown on the failed Chromebook’s recovery screen. Select that model rather than choosing a similar-looking device.
- Insert the USB drive and confirm that it can be erased. The drive becomes ChromeOS recovery media; it is not a copy of the Chromebook’s files.
- Insert the completed recovery drive into the Chromebook that will not start and follow the recovery-screen instructions.
- Allow the reinstall to finish without disconnecting power or the USB drive. Afterward, the Chromebook will need to be set up again and local data that was on its internal storage will be gone.
A USB flash drive of at least 8 GB is the only physical item required by this documented external-recovery route. It is a task-enabling device, not a data-recovery device: the drive is erased while recovery media is created, and it does not retrieve files from the failed Chromebook.
Do not confuse Powerwash with file recovery
Powerwash is ChromeOS’s factory-reset process. It can resolve account, settings, or software problems after you have secured your files, but it is not a backup and cannot be used to retrieve data from a Chromebook that will not boot.
- Powerwash deletes local user data, including files in
Downloads. - Files already in Google Drive are not deleted by the reset.
- Files on external storage are not deleted by the reset.
- Because the reset removes local data, Google recommends syncing or backing up before using it.
If a support representative suggests Powerwash, state whether any local files remain unbacked. If they do, ask for a data-preserving diagnostic path instead of accepting the reset immediately.

Use this decision flow at the recovery screen
- Do you have every important file in Drive or on external storage? If no or unsure, stop before Recovery or Powerwash and contact the manufacturer or a qualified repair provider.
- Does the Chromebook charge? Check the outlet, reconnect both charger ends, and leave it charging for at least 30 minutes.
- Does it still fail to start or charge? Apply Google’s hardware-reset guidance for the model, then contact the manufacturer if the problem continues.
- Does it show a ChromeOS recovery screen? If local data is safely backed up, choose Internet recovery when available, or prepare USB recovery media on another computer.
- Are you using a USB drive? Confirm that it has at least 8 GB and that any files on it have been copied elsewhere. Recovery-media creation erases the drive.
- After recovery, restore only verified copies. Sign in to the Google account, confirm Drive synchronization, and restore Linux files from the separate backup if one exists.
Common mistakes that make data loss more likely
Assuming a Google account automatically backs up Downloads
Signing in to ChromeOS does not make every local file available online. Verify the file in Drive or another cloud service before treating it as backed up.
Using Recovery as a first attempt at file retrieval
Recovery is designed to remove and reinstall ChromeOS. It does not provide a supported way to browse a nonbooting installation and copy files elsewhere.
Creating recovery media on the only copy of a USB drive’s contents
The USB drive used by the recovery utility is erased. Move any personal files from it before turning it into recovery media.
Forgetting Linux files
Linux development-environment data follows its own backup and restore controls. A Drive check may not account for files stored inside Linux.
Assuming another Chromebook can restore everything identically
Full Linux-environment restoration can depend on architecture. Keep the original backup and be prepared to copy files separately when architectures differ.

Accepting a reset before explaining the data requirement
Tell the manufacturer or repair provider that preserving local data is the priority. Once Recovery or Powerwash has erased internal files, the supported ChromeOS procedures do not restore them.

What can and cannot be concluded about an unbootable Chromebook
A charging failure, a damaged ChromeOS installation, and a failed internal storage device can present different symptoms. The official support instructions establish the safe order of operations—check power, try the documented hardware reset, and seek manufacturer help when the problem continues—but they do not provide a universal recovery percentage or guarantee for local files on a particular device.
The practical distinction is therefore simple: cloud copies can be checked immediately from another device; local-only copies require a data-preserving assessment before any erase-and-reinstall procedure. Internet recovery and USB recovery can restore a usable operating system when appropriate, but neither method should be described as recovering files.
After the Chromebook is working again
Make Drive copies routine
Keep active documents in Google Drive or another service you can access independently. After moving files, verify them from a second device instead of assuming synchronization completed.
Schedule Linux backups while the environment is healthy
Use the Linux development-environment settings to create manual backups before major changes or whenever the files are important. Store the backup outside the Chromebook and retain enough information to identify the architecture involved.
Keep an external copy for irreplaceable work
Cloud storage protects against a Chromebook failure, while external storage provides an additional independent copy. Label the copy with its date and contents, and disconnect it after backup.
Record the Chromebook model
Keep the model information somewhere separate from the device. If the recovery screen appears later, compare its model information with your record before creating USB recovery media.
Bottom line
Check Drive and other synced accounts first, then try the outlet, charger, 30-minute charge, and Google’s hardware-reset guidance. If local-only files matter, stop before Recovery or Powerwash and ask the manufacturer or a qualified repair provider about preserving data. If your files are already backed up, Internet recovery or an 8 GB-or-larger USB recovery drive can reinstall ChromeOS—but both paths are operating-system repair, not file retrieval.
