How to Back Up and Move Data From an Xperia That No Longer Gets Updates

An Xperia does not need current Android updates to be backed up or transferred. While it still turns on and can be unlocked, run Google Backup, verify Google Photos, make a separate USB copy of important files, and then use Android’s cable or wireless setup transfer on the replacement phone. Do not erase the Xperia until both the new phone and the independent computer copy have been checked.

What stops when Xperia updates end—and what does not

When Sony stops delivering Android or security updates for a particular Xperia model, the phone can still boot, connect to Wi-Fi, upload backups, and transfer files. An update cutoff is not a data-loss event. The practical risk is waiting until the aging phone develops a failed battery, damaged charging port, forgotten screen-lock credential, or software fault that prevents access.

Back up while the Xperia is working and unlocked. Record its exact model, Android version, Google Account address, and screen-lock PIN, pattern, or password. Keep the phone charged, connect it to a trusted Wi-Fi network, and do not factory-reset it until the replacement phone and a separate file copy have both been verified.

The safest approach uses three layers:

  • Google Backup for Android apps, supported app data, contacts, call history, device settings, and SMS/MMS.
  • Google Photos for photos and videos that have finished uploading.
  • A computer copy over USB for originals and files that cloud backup may omit, including downloads, recordings, documents, and media in unusual folders.

Android’s built-in transfer process can then copy compatible data to the new Android phone during its initial setup.

Before backing up: secure access to the old Xperia

Identify the device and accounts

Open Settings > About phone (the wording can vary by Android version) and write down the model name and Android version. Confirm which Google Account is signed in under Settings > Passwords & accounts or the account section of Settings. You will need that same account during setup of the replacement phone.

Also record the screen-lock credential. A backup may exist in the cloud, but restoring protected data still requires account verification and, in some cases, the old device’s PIN, pattern, or password. If you use an eSIM, note the carrier’s reactivation process before resetting anything.

Prepare the Xperia

  • Charge the battery well, preferably while the backup and file copy run.
  • Connect to reliable Wi-Fi and leave Wi-Fi enabled throughout cloud backup.
  • Free enough Google Account storage for the backup and enough computer storage for your media archive.
  • Do not remove the Google Account or perform a factory reset yet.

Google’s current Android documentation lists 15 GB of no-charge Google Account storage. That allowance is shared by Google services, so a nearly full account can prevent a complete backup or photo upload.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Run Google Backup on the Xperia

Start an on-demand backup

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Google.
  3. Choose All services.
  4. Under services on this device, tap Backup.
  5. Review the account and categories, then tap Back up now.

Google says Android backup can include apps and app data, call history, contacts, device settings, and SMS/MMS. Google also says a backup can take up to 24 hours, so leave the Xperia powered and online after starting it. The exact labels and available categories differ by Android release and model.

Use a PIN, pattern, or password rather than an easily guessed unlock method. Google identifies those credentials as safer for protecting backed-up data. If the Backup screen shows a warning, resolve the account, storage, Wi-Fi, or charging issue and run the operation again.

Check the backup instead of assuming it finished

Return to the Backup screen after the operation has had time to complete and look for a recent backup time. A “last backup” timestamp is more useful than a brief notification that disappeared. If the timestamp does not change, keep the phone connected to Wi-Fi and retry; an account with insufficient storage or a failed network connection can leave the backup incomplete.

Google describes backing up the old phone first as the fastest way to transfer apps, messages, call history, and settings. This backup is also the fallback if the old Xperia becomes unavailable before the new phone is set up.

Verify photos and videos separately

Google Backup and Google Photos are different systems. Open Google Photos on the Xperia, tap the account avatar, and check the backup status. Browse recent photos and older albums, and inspect folders that are not normally part of the camera roll. Google says photos and videos are available in Google Photos when that service has backed them up; a file that exists only on the phone is not protected merely because Android Backup is enabled.

What to do when the Photos library is incomplete

  • Keep the Xperia on Wi-Fi and power until Google Photos reports that backup is complete.
  • Check Photos settings > Backup > Back up device folders and enable folders containing screenshots, messaging attachments, edited images, or downloaded media that you need.
  • Open Google Photos on a computer or the new phone and confirm that representative recent and older items are present.
  • For irreplaceable originals, copy the files directly to a computer as well. Do this even when Photos appears complete.

Cloud photo backup is convenient, but it is not a substitute for an independent copy when the files cannot be recreated. Do not erase the Xperia until both views—Google Photos and the computer archive—contain the material you expect.

Make an independent computer copy over USB

Connect the Xperia for file transfer

  1. Use a USB cable that carries data, not only power, and connect the Xperia to the computer.
  2. Unlock the Xperia.
  3. Pull down the USB notification and select File transfer or MTP when prompted.
  4. Open the phone’s internal storage on the computer and copy files to a clearly named folder, such as Xperia-backup-2026-10-16.

The computer-transfer method is documented by Google for moving files with a USB cable. Sony’s current Xperia Companion requirements also list one available USB port and a USB cable, although Companion itself should not be treated as the archive destination.

Folders worth copying

At minimum, inspect and copy these folders if they exist:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • DCIM — camera photographs and videos.
  • Pictures — screenshots, edited images, and images saved by apps.
  • Movies and Music — locally stored video and audio.
  • Download — files downloaded from browsers, email, and other apps.
  • Documents — PDFs, scans, spreadsheets, and text files.
  • Recordings or similarly named recorder folders — voice memos and meeting recordings.
  • App-export folders — backups created by messaging, notes, password, or media applications.

Also inspect folders created by the apps you actually use. Android’s storage layout varies, and some applications keep exports in a named folder rather than one of the standard directories above.

Verify the archive before deleting anything

  1. Open several photos, videos, documents, and recordings directly from the computer copy.
  2. Compare approximate file counts and date ranges with what is visible on the Xperia.
  3. Check that large videos play from beginning to end rather than showing only a thumbnail.
  4. Keep the archive on storage with enough free capacity and, if the files are critical, make another copy on a separate drive.

If the computer does not see the phone, try a known-good data cable, a different USB port, and the File transfer/MTP setting again. A charge-only cable, locked screen, or a USB mode left on “No data transfer” is a common cause. Windows and macOS expose different prompts, so the final troubleshooting step depends on the computer and Xperia model.

Move data to the replacement Android phone

Use the setup-time transfer whenever possible

Start the new phone and leave it in its initial Android setup flow. The most complete transfer normally occurs before setup is finished. When asked whether to copy apps and data, connect the phones with a compatible cable, or choose the wireless option.

  1. Sign in to the same Google Account used on the Xperia.
  2. Choose Copy apps and data (the exact wording can differ).
  3. For a wired transfer, connect both phones. An adapter may be required if the cable ends do not fit both devices.
  4. For a wireless transfer, follow the on-screen pairing and confirmation steps on both phones.
  5. Review the categories and select what you want to copy.
  6. Keep both phones charged, near each other when using wireless transfer, and connected to the internet until the process reports completion.

Google states that cable and wireless transfer support the same data categories. Google also says the transfer can take from a few minutes to a few hours, depending on the amount of data. A cable is usually the more predictable choice because it avoids wireless interference and keeps the two devices connected physically, but either supported method can work.

If the old Xperia is no longer usable

On the new phone, choose the option to restore from a Google Account backup instead of copying directly from the old device. Select the most recent Xperia backup and allow the restore to finish. Google warns that a backup made on a higher Android version may not restore completely to a phone running a lower Android version. Where the destination uses an older release, expect to reinstall or configure some items manually.

Data that may not transfer automatically

Android’s setup transfer is broad, not universal. Google identifies several categories that may be omitted:

  • Downloads and files stored outside standard media locations.
  • Media in hidden folders.
  • Applications installed outside Google Play.
  • Data from apps that do not implement Android backup.
  • Accounts that are not Google Accounts.
  • Contacts and calendars stored only in non-Google accounts.
  • Ringtones and some device-specific settings.

Use each application’s own export, sync, or restore procedure for information that matters. Do not assume that an app appearing on the new phone means its private data came with it.

Authenticator and password-manager accounts

Before wiping the Xperia, open every two-factor-authentication app and confirm that its accounts have been transferred or that you have a documented recovery method. Some authenticators require an in-app export, cloud sync, QR-code transfer, or re-enrollment with each service. Test a sign-in on the new phone before removing the old device.

For a password manager, sign in on the new phone and verify that the vault opens and that recovery information is available. If the vault is stored only locally, use the application’s export process while the Xperia still works and protect the export as sensitive data.

Messaging, notes, recordings, and proprietary app data

Export notes and recorder files to a location you have copied to the computer. Messaging applications may require their own cloud backup or a device-to-device migration. Banking, work-profile, and enterprise applications commonly require fresh enrollment even when the application package itself is restored.

WhatsApp is a specific case: Google says its data is restored from the cloud after you sign in and open WhatsApp on the new phone, but the old phone must have WhatsApp backup enabled. Check the WhatsApp backup date on the Xperia before beginning the move, and do not rely on an Android device backup alone for the chat history.

Why Xperia Transfer 2 and Xperia Companion are not the same as a backup

Xperia Transfer 2 is discontinued

Sony announced that the Xperia Transfer 2 service ended on June 30, 2023, and that the app would no longer be available for download through Google Play. It is therefore not a current migration path. Use Android’s built-in cable or wireless transfer and Google’s cloud backup instead.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Current Xperia Companion has limited relevance

Sony still provides Xperia Companion for Windows and macOS for supported combinations and selected device-management or repair tasks. However, Sony’s current feature information and FAQ do not present it as a dependable general backup solution for newer Xperia generations. Sony says that after December 2023 it is no longer possible to back up data using the Xperia Companion PC app, and that Xperia phones released from 2019 onward use Google Drive backup.

If you already have Xperia Companion installed, check its version. Sony says versions older than 24.9.1.202408201019, released September 2, 2024, are no longer supported and should be replaced with the latest available version. Updating the utility does not change the fact that it is not a substitute for Google Backup plus a manually verified USB archive.

Method comparison

Method Best for Main limitation When to use it
Google Backup / Google One Apps, supported app data, contacts, call history, settings, and SMS/MMS; restoring without the old phone Not every app or file is included; the most complete restoration occurs during setup and a backup can take up to 24 hours Run it first and keep the latest timestamp
Android cable or wireless setup transfer Direct migration to a new Android phone Usually a setup-time operation; downloads, hidden folders, non-Play apps, and unsupported app data may be omitted Use while the new phone is still in setup
USB computer copy Photos, videos, downloads, documents, recordings, and an independent archive Needs a working data cable, available storage, and manual verification Make it before erasing the Xperia
Xperia Companion Repair and limited device management on supported combinations Sony no longer presents it as a current backup path for newer Xperia generations; old versions are unsupported Do not depend on it for a complete migration

Verification checklist before a factory reset

Factory-resetting is the final step, not part of the backup process. Work through this checklist on the new phone and computer:

  • Google Photos shows recent and older photos and videos that you expected.
  • Contacts, call history, SMS/MMS, and required settings are present.
  • Files opens representative PDFs, photos, videos, downloads, and recordings from the new phone.
  • Several files copied to the computer open successfully, and the archive covers the expected dates and folders.
  • Authenticator codes or account recovery methods work.
  • The password-manager vault opens and contains current entries.
  • WhatsApp and other important messaging apps show the expected backup or chat history.
  • Banking, work, email, and other security-sensitive apps can be accessed.
  • The SIM or eSIM has been moved or reactivated as appropriate.

Only after these checks should you sign out of accounts on the old Xperia, remove the physical SIM or prepare the eSIM for transfer, and perform the factory reset. Keep the computer archive until you are certain no delayed cloud restore or missing app export is needed.

Common problems and practical fixes

The Google backup button is missing or disabled

Confirm that a Google Account is added, the phone is online, and the device has enough account storage. Install any available Google Play system components that the model supports, restart the Xperia, and return to Settings > Google > All services > Backup. Menu labels can differ on older Android versions.

The transfer stops partway through

Reconnect both phones to power, keep them close together, and retry from setup. For a cable transfer, replace the cable or adapter if either phone repeatedly disconnects. For wireless transfer, move away from congested wireless equipment and keep both screens available when prompted. Large photo and video libraries can take hours rather than minutes.

Apps appear, but their data is absent

This usually means the app does not participate in Android backup, the data belongs to a non-Google account, or the app requires its own restore process. Sign in within the app, import its export, or follow its documented migration instructions. Reinstalling the application alone cannot recreate data that was stored only on the old phone.

Photos are missing from Google Photos

Check the backup status and device-folder settings in Google Photos, then copy the missing folders directly to the computer. Open the copied originals before deleting them from the Xperia. A photo visible in a messaging app or file manager may be stored outside the folders Google Photos is currently backing up.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The computer sees the Xperia only as a charger

Unlock the phone, select File transfer/MTP in the USB notification, and try another data-capable cable and USB port. If the phone still does not appear, restart both devices and consult model-specific Windows or macOS USB guidance. Do not assume a charging connection has copied any files.

Bottom line

Use Google Backup for supported Android data, Google Photos for uploaded media, and a manually verified USB archive for the files that must not be lost. Transfer to the new Android phone during setup by cable or wireless connection, then handle authenticators, password vaults, WhatsApp, non-Google accounts, downloads, and app-specific data separately. Xperia Transfer 2 ended on June 30, 2023, and Xperia Companion is not a dependable complete-backup method for newer models. Keep the old Xperia intact until every important item works on the replacement phone and exists in an independent copy.
