What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Use your current note app’s official export or backup tool before you change or delete the account. Save the downloaded archive somewhere you control, inspect its contents, and test-import a small sample into the destination app before moving the rest.
An export is not a universal format. What you can download, which attachments and metadata survive, and whether folders or notebooks remain organized depends on the app, your account type, your device, and the destination’s importer.

Start with an inventory, not an export button
Before exporting anything, identify where the notes actually live. Record the app, the account used to sign in, the device you will use, and the cloud location that stores the notebooks. This matters because export availability can change between personal and work or school accounts.

- App and edition: Note whether you are using a desktop app, a browser, or a mobile app. Several documented export routes work only on desktop or the web.
- Account type: Work and school tenants can have different download permissions from personal accounts.
- Content types: Mark notes containing images, scans, voice recordings, drawings, checklists, labels, tags, collaborators, or nested pages. These are the items most likely to need manual checking after import.
- Organization: List notebooks, folders, sections, and subpages that you need to preserve. A migration can retain note text while flattening that structure.
- Available storage: Confirm that the computer or drive receiving the download has enough free space. A notebook archive can be much larger than the visible text because it may include attachments.
Do not delete the source account, cancel a subscription, or empty a notebook until the exported copy opens and a sample has been imported successfully.

Google Keep: download an archive through Google Takeout
Google documents exporting and downloading Keep data through Google Takeout. The resulting archive is intended for keeping records or using the data in another service.
The documented Keep export can include note text and list items, voice recordings, drawings, images, colors, pinned and archived state, collaborators, and labels. That is broader than a plain-text copy, so inspect the archive rather than assuming that only the visible words were saved.
There is an account restriction: some data from work or school accounts may not be available for download. If the notes belong to an organization, check the account’s export result before treating it as a complete backup. Open the downloaded files and verify several notes with attachments, labels, and collaborators.

Evernote: export from the Mac or Windows desktop app
Evernote’s help documentation says that exporting is available only in the desktop app, not Evernote Web. On Mac or Windows, select notes or a notebook and choose an export format such as ENEX or HTML.
You can export up to 100 selected notes at a time or export an entire notebook. For an individual export, Evernote also allows some note attributes to be selected. Use a whole-notebook export when you want a broad archive, then create a smaller sample export for migration testing if needed.
ENEX is the structured choice when the destination can import it; HTML gives you a readable copy for reference. Evernote saves the export to the computer, so copy it to your controlled storage after the export completes.
OneNote: download a personal OneDrive notebook as a ZIP
OneNote for the web can download a copy of a notebook as a ZIP file. Microsoft describes this route as a way to keep a backup or move a notebook to another account.

- Capacity Display Variance: 500GB external ssd often appears as around 465GB on Windows. MacOS can show full 500 GB capacity. This is binary calculation difference and doesn’t affect SSD hard drive actual physical storage

- Always Fast: No slowdowns for large file transfers. With SLC caching (25% of current available capacity allocated as high-speed cache), this external SSD delivers steady 10Gbps for transfers within the cache capacity
The limitation is significant: the web export applies to notebooks in personal OneDrive accounts. It does not apply to notebooks stored in work or school OneDrive or in SharePoint. If your notebook is in an organizational tenant, this particular download route is not available.
After downloading, Microsoft’s process is to open the archive in OneNote for Windows and check that the sections and pages are accessible. Allow enough hard-drive space for the ZIP and the unpacked notebook. The import functionality described on Microsoft’s page is deprecated, so treat the downloaded copy primarily as a backup and verify the destination’s current import support before planning a move around it.
Apple Notes on Mac: export and import several portable formats
On a Mac, Apple Notes can export an individual note as a PDF or Markdown file. It can import Markdown, TXT, RTF, RTFD, HTML, and ENEX files. Folder imports can preserve folder structure, which is useful when the destination supports the same hierarchy.
PDF is convenient for a fixed, readable reference copy, but the cited Apple documentation does not establish that PDF preserves an editable note structure. Choose Markdown or ENEX when you need content that another app can parse and edit.

Notion: export a workspace, then account for import limits
Notion can export a workspace as HTML, Markdown, or CSV for databases, along with uploaded files. The download link for a workspace export expires after seven days, so retrieve the files promptly and store them locally under your control.
Notion’s importer accepts common formats including Markdown, HTML, CSV, ZIP, and Evernote exports. Its Evernote mapping changes the original model: notebooks map to pages and notes map to database items. That may be workable, but it is not a one-to-one recreation of Evernote’s notebook hierarchy.

Notion warns that large workspace exports can have trouble. Its documented workaround is to export top-level pages in smaller batches and include their subpages. The Evernote importer also warns that images may need cleanup and that imports above approximately 5,000 notes may fail. Treat that figure as an operational guidance threshold, not a guaranteed capacity.
Choose a format that matches the job
No single format is best for every migration. Keep a structured copy for importing and, when practical, a readable copy for long-term reference.
| Source or route | Export formats or archive | What the documentation says can survive | Important constraint |
|---|---|---|---|
| Google Keep | Google Takeout download archive | Text and lists, voice recordings, drawings, images, color, pinned and archived state, collaborators, and labels | Some work or school account data may be unavailable |
| Evernote desktop | ENEX or HTML | Selected note attributes can be included; imported notes retain available file attributes | Up to 100 selected notes at a time or a whole notebook; export is not available in Evernote Web; notebook structure is not retained by the documented import |
| OneNote for the web | Notebook ZIP | Sections and pages can be checked after opening the archive in OneNote for Windows | Personal OneDrive notebooks only; work or school OneDrive and SharePoint notebooks are excluded |
| Apple Notes on Mac | PDF or Markdown export; Markdown, TXT, RTF, RTFD, HTML, and ENEX import | Folder imports can preserve folder structure; ENEX tags can import on macOS 13 or later | Workflow applies to Mac, not automatically to iOS; PDF is documented as an export format but not as an editable-structure format |
| Notion | HTML, Markdown, CSV for databases, uploaded files; imports Markdown, HTML, CSV, ZIP, and Evernote | Uploaded files can accompany workspace exports | Download link expires after seven days; large exports may require smaller top-level batches; Evernote images may need cleanup and imports above approximately 5,000 notes may fail |
Use an editable or structured format when the destination explicitly supports it. Keep a readable format as a second copy when you need to consult the notes without relying on a future importer. A PDF can document what a note looked like, but it should not be your only migration copy when you need searchable, editable content.
Store the archive outside the source app
A successful download is only useful if you can still access it after changing services. Save the archive and any companion folders to a location you control, such as the computer used for the export and an optional external drive. The export guidance establishes that these files are downloaded locally; it does not require a particular drive, capacity, speed, or brand.
- Keep the original downloaded archive unchanged. Work from a duplicate when you need to unpack, rename, or convert files.
- Use descriptive names containing the app, account, and export date, such as
keep-personal-2026-10-17. - Preserve companion asset folders beside the main archive. Moving only an HTML file or database export can break links to images and other attachments.
- Protect archives that contain private notes with the same care as the original account. Use access controls or encryption provided by your storage system where appropriate.
- Make a second copy before starting a large import. A second location protects against a failed download, accidental overwrite, or a destination app changing files during conversion.
Inspect the export before importing it
Do not infer completeness from the fact that an export finished without an error. Open the archive or unpack it on a copy and check both content and structure.
- Confirm the file opens. Test the archive, ENEX file, HTML folder, Markdown files, or ZIP in a suitable viewer or the destination app’s importer.
- Count or sample notes. Compare a few recent notes, old notes, and notes from important notebooks or folders. If the source app reports a total, check whether the export appears to contain the same broad set.
- Check attachments. Open representative images, scans, drawings, and voice recordings. Verify that filenames are present and that linked asset folders remain beside the main export.
- Check metadata. Look for labels, tags, colors, pinned or archived state, collaborators, and dates where the source app documents them as exportable.
- Check hierarchy. Confirm whether notebooks, folders, sections, and nested pages are represented. A flat set of files may be complete as content while still losing the original organization.
- Record exceptions. If an account restriction, unreadable attachment, or missing label appears, note it before importing so you can recover the original or export a narrower set.
For a OneNote ZIP, follow Microsoft’s specific check: open the downloaded archive in OneNote for Windows and verify that sections and pages can be accessed.

What to watch for in common routes
Evernote’s documented import restores notes and available attributes but does not preserve notebook structures. Expect to rebuild notebooks or folders if that organization matters.
Notion’s Evernote importer maps notebooks to pages and notes to database items. Images may not render correctly and may require cleanup. For a large library, split the export into smaller top-level batches instead of assuming one workspace export will import cleanly.
Apple Notes can preserve folder structure when importing folders, and macOS 13 or later can bring in tags from ENEX. Verify those results on the Mac before removing the original tags or folders.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Move the full library only after the sample passes
- Freeze the source briefly. Avoid making edits while the final export is being created, or record changes made after the export so they can be copied later.
- Create the final export. Use the same official route that produced the successful sample, with the account and device restrictions in mind.
- Store the final archive. Keep the untouched download and a second working copy if the importer will modify files.
- Import in manageable batches. Smaller batches make it easier to identify a damaged file, an unsupported attachment, or a scale limit.
- Validate priority content. Start with notes that contain irreplaceable information, then check attachments, tags, and hierarchy across the remaining batches.
- Keep the source available. Do not close the old account until the migrated library and important attachments have been checked in the destination.
This staged approach is a precaution based on documented import limitations; it is not a guarantee that every field will transfer.
Troubleshoot by symptom
The export option is missing
Check the device and account first. Evernote requires the Mac or Windows desktop app for export. OneNote’s web download is limited to personal OneDrive notebooks and excludes work or school OneDrive and SharePoint. Apple’s documented workflow is on Mac. Google Keep may omit some work or school account data.

Inspect the files and compare attachments, labels, tags, collaborators, and archived or pinned state with the source. For an organizational account, ask whether administrator policy limited the export. Create a narrower export of a small notebook or folder and test it before repeating the entire process.

Notes import but the organization is wrong
That can be an importer limitation rather than a damaged archive. Evernote’s documented import does not retain notebook structures, while Notion converts Evernote notebooks to pages and notes to database items. Recreate the destination hierarchy after confirming that the note content and attachments are intact.
Images or attachments are missing
Confirm that companion asset folders were kept beside the main export. Open the original archive and the imported note, then test several file types. Notion specifically warns that Evernote images may need cleanup. If the destination cannot render an attachment, retain the original export and the source account while you choose a different importer or preserve a readable copy.
A large import fails
Break it into smaller batches. Notion documents possible trouble with large workspace exports and an approximate failure threshold above 5,000 Evernote notes. Export top-level pages in smaller groups with their subpages, or import one notebook or folder at a time.

When more than one route is possible, evaluate each one on five practical axes: availability for your device and account, format compatibility, attachment and metadata retention, hierarchy preservation, and operational limits such as batch size or download expiry.
- Availability: A technically attractive format is irrelevant if your account or device cannot produce it.
- Compatibility: Prefer a format the destination explicitly imports, such as ENEX, Markdown, HTML, CSV, or ZIP where supported.
- Fidelity: Confirm which text, media, tags, labels, dates, colors, collaborators, and file attributes survive.
- Organization: Determine whether notebooks, folders, sections, and nested pages remain intact or must be rebuilt.
- Scale and timing: Check selection limits, approximate import thresholds, local storage needs, and expiring download links.
The safest plan is often two-layered: retain the original archive as a preservation copy, then use the destination’s most structured supported format for the working migration.
Keep a recovery copy after the switch
Once the destination is working, retain the original export instead of treating the migration as the end of backup. A future app change may introduce another format conversion, and the untouched archive gives you a reference point for missing attachments or metadata. Periodically export newly created or substantially changed notes using the destination app’s own documented backup feature, and keep those files with the earlier archive.
