What you need before starting
Have the phone, its Google Account credentials, a reliable internet connection and, if you want an offline copy, a USB cable that supports data transfer and a computer with enough free space. The exact screens can differ by model, region and ColorOS build.

- Keep account access available: write down or confirm the Google Account email and password currently used on the phone. You need that account to restore a cloud backup after a reset.
- Plan for enough storage: Google Accounts include up to 15 GB at no charge, shared across Google services. Google One can provide additional storage if the account is full.
- Do not rely on a single copy: the safest practical arrangement is one local OPPO backup, one Google backup and one copy outside the phone.
Start while the phone is working normally, not after the update has already failed or the handset is stuck in a recovery screen. A major update can take time, and a backup made beforehand gives you more options if troubleshooting later requires a reset. The update itself may preserve user data, but OPPO’s general guidance does not establish one result for every model, region and software build.

Which backup method does what?

The three routes are complementary rather than interchangeable. The local backup is convenient for ColorOS-specific categories, Google follows the account to a reset or replacement device, and a computer copy remains available even if the phone’s storage is wiped. If you have limited time, complete Google backup first, then make the local backup and export it as soon as practical.
1. Create an OPPO local backup
Local backup is the fastest way to capture the categories OPPO exposes in ColorOS. It remains on the handset until you export it, so treat this as the first layer, not the final destination.
ColorOS 15 and later
- Open Settings > System & update > Back up & reset > Back up & migrate > Local backup.
- Tap New backup.
- Select the categories you want, then tap Start.
ColorOS 5.0 through ColorOS 14
- Open Settings > Additional settings or System settings.
- Choose Back up and reset > Back up & restore > Local backup.
- Tap New backup, select the data and tap Start.
OPPO describes local backup as covering personal data such as contacts and messages; system data such as settings, clock and weather information; and applications with their data. “Applications with their data” is not a guarantee that every app, account, downloaded file or protected database will be restorable. Messaging, authentication, payment and other security-sensitive apps can require their own export or sign-in procedure.

When the operation finishes, note the backup time and size. Do not factory-reset, wipe or flash the phone while this is your only copy. OPPO says those operations clear storage backups. The local-backup paths and category descriptions are documented in OPPO’s ColorOS backup guide.
2. Run Google’s backup as a separate layer
Google’s backup is independent of the OPPO local file and is the layer designed to follow your account to another or reset device. Use the path that matches your ColorOS version.
ColorOS 15 and later
- Open Settings > System & update > Back up & reset.
- Under Google accounts, choose Back up now.
ColorOS 5 through ColorOS 14
- Open Settings > Additional settings > Back up and reset.
- Enable Back up my data or Backup by Google One, depending on the label shown.
Google’s general Android path
If the OPPO-specific menu is different, try Settings > Google services > All services > Backup > Back up now. Google documents this route in Back up or restore data on your Android device.
Open the backup screen’s Backup details to inspect what is selected. Google lists supported categories including apps and app data, call history, contacts, device settings and SMS/MMS. RCS messages, call settings, blocked numbers and pictures or videos depend on the relevant Google apps and services. Google explicitly warns: “Not all apps can back up or restore all settings and data.” An app can therefore appear installed after restoration while requiring its own login, download or in-app restore.

Wait for a completed status
Do not treat tapping Back up now as proof that the upload is finished. Google says a Google One backup can take up to 24 hours. Return to the backup page and check that the selected data types show On or otherwise indicate that they have been saved. Large media libraries, a slow connection or a nearly full account can extend the process. The timing and status guidance are in Google’s Android backup help.
3. Protect photos, videos and other media
Photos are a common gap because they may be synchronized separately from the device backup. If you use Google Photos, open it and confirm that recent camera images are present and that its backup status is complete. Google identifies photos and videos as available through Google Photos when that service is used.
Also plan a direct copy for irreplaceable media. OPPO’s computer instructions identify common folders such as DCIM, Movies and Music. Screenshots, downloads, recordings and app-specific media may be stored in other folders, so inspect the phone’s storage rather than assuming those three folders contain everything.
4. Export the local backup to a computer
An exported copy turns the OPPO local backup into an off-phone backup. OPPO’s computer guide covers ColorOS 7–13; newer phones may show different prompts, but the connection principle is the same.
- Connect the OPPO phone to the computer with a compatible USB cable. A charging-only cable will not work for file copying.
- Unlock the phone and open the USB notification or connection options.
- Select File transfer rather than charge-only or another USB mode.
- On the computer, open the phone’s internal storage.
- Copy the phone’s Backup folder to a clearly named computer folder. Keep the original folder structure and wait for the transfer to finish.
- Separately copy important folders such as DCIM, Movies and Music, plus any other personal folders you need.
- Eject the phone from the computer before disconnecting the cable.
OPPO states that storage backups are erased by flashing, wiping data or a factory reset, which is why this export matters. Its step-by-step computer guidance is at How to Back Up Your OPPO Phone to a Computer.
If the computer has limited capacity, prioritize the OPPO Backup folder and irreplaceable photos, videos, recordings and documents. Do not rename individual files inside the backup folder or scatter them across unrelated directories; keeping the folder together makes it easier to locate when an OPPO restore tool requests it.
5. Verify the copies before installing
Use this short check rather than assuming that a completed-looking screen means your data is safe:

- The computer can open the copied Backup folder and shows files inside it.
- Representative photos and videos open from the computer copy.
- Google’s backup page shows the expected categories as saved or On, and the account has enough available storage.
- Recent contacts, messages and call history are present on the phone before the update.
- Critical apps have been checked for their own export, cloud-sync or recovery instructions, especially authenticator, payment and private-messaging apps.
- You know the Google Account and password associated with the phone.
Official support pages do not define a universal full-restore test for an OPPO local backup. The practical verification above confirms that a separate copy exists and that Google reports saved categories, but it cannot prove that every app’s private data will restore.
A safe sequence when you are short on time
- Check the ColorOS version and available Google storage.
- Start Google’s backup and leave the phone connected until the status shows the selected types are saved.
- Create the OPPO local backup and record that it completed.
- Connect the phone to a computer, select File transfer, and copy the Backup folder.
- Copy DCIM and other personal media folders, then open several files on the computer.
- Check account credentials and app-specific recovery steps.
- Only then begin the update.
This order gives you a cloud copy even if the cable or computer step is delayed, while still preserving the OPPO-specific local data and an independent offline copy before any reset or wipe becomes necessary.
6. Install the update without interrupting it
After the copies are verified, follow OPPO’s general OTA precautions:
- Keep the phone connected to power or above 40% battery.
- Use a reliable Wi-Fi or mobile-data connection.
- Do not operate the phone, power it off or deliberately interrupt the installation while it is updating.
OPPO summarizes its advice this way: “Although OTA Update doesn’t require backing up data, it is still best to make backing up data a practice every time you update anything on your phone. Make it a habit at any time.” These are broad support recommendations; the exact requirements can differ for a particular model and update package. OPPO’s reminder is available at OTA Update Reminders. The update’s exact data behavior is model-, region- and build-specific, so do not assume that every major OTA is guaranteed either to preserve or to erase user data.
What happens if you must restore after a reset?
Google restores the main device backup during initial setup or after a factory reset. Follow the setup prompts, sign in with the same Google Account and select the available backup. Google says restoration can take up to 24 hours; backed-up photos and videos are available in Google Photos rather than necessarily being copied back into local folders immediately.
A backup made on a newer Android version cannot be restored to an older Android version. This matters if you are troubleshooting by rolling back or setting up an older handset. Google’s factory-reset guidance also says to know the account and password on the phone; after a recent password change, you may need to wait 24 hours before a factory reset. An OPPO local backup exported to a computer is not automatically restored by Google. Keep the computer copy available and use OPPO’s restore option, when offered by the same or a compatible ColorOS release, to bring back its selected categories.

Troubleshooting common backup problems
The local-backup menu is missing
Recheck the ColorOS version and try both naming variants: About Phone/About Device, Additional settings/System settings, and Back up and reset/Back up & reset. OPPO’s paths are version guidance, not a guarantee that every carrier or regional build uses identical labels. If the feature is absent, complete Google backup and the computer media export, then consult the support page for the exact model.
Google backup will not complete
Open Backup details, remove unnecessary categories only if you understand the trade-off, free Google Account storage, connect to reliable Wi-Fi and retry. Leave the phone connected long enough for the status to change; Google allows up to 24 hours. Do not claim completion merely because the button accepted the request.

The computer sees the phone but no files
Unlock the handset, reconnect the cable and choose File transfer. Try another USB port or a cable known to carry data. If the phone still does not appear as storage, use the handset-specific OPPO instructions; cable and connector requirements vary by model.
An app is missing data after restoration
Check that app’s own backup or export feature and sign in again. Google’s supported categories do not mean every app’s private database, downloads or security credentials are included. For essential apps, perform the app-level export before updating rather than relying on a general device backup.
You are about to factory-reset or flash the phone
Stop and confirm that the local Backup folder is already on the computer. A copy that exists only in phone storage can be erased by the operation you are about to perform. Confirm the Google backup status and account password as well.

How much Google storage is included for free?

Backed-up photos and videos are available in Google Photos. They may not be copied back into the phone’s local folders immediately, so confirm that Google Photos contains the images and keep a computer copy of irreplaceable media.
Can a newer Android backup be restored to an older Android version?
