Use more than one backup layer before installing HyperOS: create a Xiaomi local backup, copy it off the phone, verify Xiaomi Cloud synchronization, run Google’s Android backup, and make separate copies inside apps such as WhatsApp. Xiaomi says an over-the-air upgrade should not affect phone data, but still advises backing up as a safety precaution. A cloud sync alone is not a complete copy of your phone, especially because Xiaomi says its cloud backup does not include app data.
Why you should back up before a HyperOS update
System updates are designed to preserve your data, but a backup gives you a recovery option if an update is interrupted, an app becomes incompatible, settings are reset, or you later need to factory-reset the phone while troubleshooting. Xiaomi’s own guidance says, “The OTA upgrade will not affect phone data, but for the safety of the data, please make a backup before upgrading.” That statement appears in Xiaomi Global Support’s OTA upgrade guidance, whose illustrated steps refer to MIUI 12. Treat the recommendation as general safety advice; current HyperOS labels and menu locations can differ by model, region and software version.

The dependable approach is layered:
- Local Xiaomi backup: a broader on-device copy that Xiaomi says can include app data.
- Off-device copy: the local backup moved to a computer or USB drive so a factory reset cannot erase it.
- Xiaomi Cloud: an additional wireless copy of supported Xiaomi data and system items.
- Google Android backup: a separate account-based backup for supported Android data and settings.
- App-specific backups: copies made inside WhatsApp, authenticator, banking, notes and work apps that may not be covered by general backups.

1. Create a Xiaomi local backup
Start with the phone’s built-in backup feature. Xiaomi’s support instructions describe a local backup destination with a folder named MIUI-backup-AllBackup. HyperOS and different Xiaomi models may display a different label or place the option under a differently named “Backup” or “Restore” screen, so follow the backup control shown on your device rather than assuming the MIUI-era wording is identical.

Find the built-in backup control
- Open Settings and search for backup, or open the system section that contains backup and restore tools.
- Choose the Xiaomi local or device backup option. The exact path can vary between models and HyperOS releases.
- Select the categories offered by the phone. Include personal data and app data that the screen allows you to select.
- Start the backup and keep the phone powered on until the process reports completion.
Do not treat the existence of a backup folder as proof that the operation finished. Open the backup destination and check that the newly created backup files are visible and have a current date or time.

Move the local copy off the phone
A local backup left only in internal storage is vulnerable to the very action you may need during recovery. Xiaomi warns that a factory reset permanently deletes a local backup stored on the phone. After the backup completes, connect the phone to a computer with USB and copy the complete backup folder, including MIUI-backup-AllBackup when that is the folder shown, to a clearly named directory. Xiaomi also describes saving the backup to a USB drive as an alternative.
- Connect the phone to the computer or compatible USB storage.
- Unlock the phone and select the file-transfer mode if Android asks how the USB connection should be used.
- Locate the Xiaomi backup folder in internal storage.
- Copy the entire folder rather than selected files.
- Wait for the transfer to finish, then open the destination and confirm that the files are present.
- Keep the external copy until the updated phone has been checked and your important apps and files are working.
If the computer shows an empty phone, keep the device unlocked, reconnect the cable, try another USB port or cable, and select file transfer again. Do not delete the on-phone copy until you have verified the external copy.
2. Check Xiaomi Cloud synchronization
Xiaomi Cloud is useful, but it is a synchronized cloud service rather than a complete image of every item on the phone. Open your Xiaomi Account and Xiaomi Cloud controls, then review which data types are enabled and whether they show as synchronized. Menu names and available services can differ by region and HyperOS version.

Xiaomi’s list of supported cloud content includes system and home-screen items such as desktop layouts, wallpapers, alarms and notification management, along with other supported Xiaomi data. The exact list shown on your phone is the one that matters. Review each category you care about instead of assuming that turning on Xiaomi Cloud protects everything.

Verify the sync status
- Open the Xiaomi Account or Xiaomi Cloud settings.
- Review the individual switches for contacts, messages, settings, layouts, photos or other categories offered on your device.
- Check the last synchronization time or status indicator where one is shown.
- Leave the phone connected to Wi-Fi and power long enough for pending items to synchronize.
Do not count Xiaomi Cloud as your only app backup. Xiaomi’s comparison guidance explicitly says local backups can include app data while Xiaomi Cloud backups cannot. Read the comparison at How are local backups different from cloud backups?.
3. Run Google’s Android backup
Google’s Android backup is separate from Xiaomi’s tools. It associates supported device data with your Google Account and gives you another recovery source if the local copy is damaged or unavailable.
Start the backup
- Open Settings.
- Tap Google.
- Tap All services.
- Under services from Google, tap Backup.
- Review the categories and account shown, then tap Back up now.
This path comes from Google’s Back up or restore data on your Android device instructions. Your labels may be slightly different if Xiaomi has customized the Settings app, but searching Settings for “backup” should expose the same Google control.
Check what was saved
Review the backup details and wait until the status indicates that the selected data is saved. Google lists apps and app data, call history, contacts, device settings and SMS/MMS among the data that can be backed up. Photos and videos are handled through Google Photos rather than the ordinary device-backup record. Google also warns that not every app backs up or restores all settings and data.
Allow time for completion. Google says a Google One backup can take up to 24 hours; that is a maximum caveat, not a promise that every backup will take that long. Keep the phone connected to a reliable network and power while a large backup is processing.

4. Make app-specific backups for important data
General phone backups do not guarantee that every app’s private data will return. Check the apps whose information would be difficult or impossible to recreate.

Open WhatsApp’s own backup settings and confirm that a recent cloud backup exists for the account you will use after the update. Google’s Android transfer instructions say WhatsApp chats and data restore requires WhatsApp backup to be turned on on the old device. The instruction is in Copy apps & data from an Android to a new Android device. Do not assume that a Google device-backup timestamp alone proves WhatsApp has a current chat backup.
Authenticator, banking, notes and work apps
Open each critical app and look for its own export, backup, account-sync or device-migration feature. Authenticator apps may require a transfer process or recovery codes. Banking and work apps can require a new-device approval, administrator enrollment or a separate sign-in. Notes apps may synchronize only after you sign in to their account. Follow the instructions displayed by each app and confirm that you can access the required account or recovery method.
Keep passwords, two-factor recovery codes and screen-lock credentials available. A backup can restore files without restoring your ability to sign in to an account that requires additional verification.
5. Protect photos, downloads and documents
Review folders that may not be included in the Xiaomi or Google backup you selected. Photos and videos normally use Google Photos when you rely on Google’s cloud service, while downloads, recordings, PDFs and documents may remain only in local storage unless you copied or synchronized them separately.

- Open your gallery and confirm that important photos and videos show as backed up in the photo service you use.
- Check the Downloads, Documents, DCIM and recording folders for files that matter.
- Copy irreplaceable files to a computer or USB drive, or verify that the service you use has finished synchronizing them.
- Open a few copied files from the external destination to verify that the transfer produced usable files.
6. Final checklist before installing HyperOS
Use this check immediately before tapping the update control:
- The Xiaomi local backup completed without an error.
- The complete local backup folder is visible on a computer or USB drive, not only on the phone.
- Xiaomi Cloud shows current synchronization for the supported categories you need.
- Google Backup displays the expected account, categories and a completed or current status.
- WhatsApp shows a recent backup, if its chats matter.
- Other critical apps have completed their own export, sync or migration steps.
- Photos, downloads and documents not covered by a cloud service have another copy.
- You know the passwords, recovery codes and screen-lock credentials needed after the update.
- The phone has sufficient battery and a stable connection for the update process.
Common problems and how to handle them
The local backup option is missing
Search Settings for “backup” and inspect both Xiaomi and Google results. Xiaomi’s support examples use MIUI-era labels, while current HyperOS builds and individual models can reorganize the controls. If the phone offers only cloud choices, still complete Google Backup, Xiaomi Cloud synchronization and app-specific backups, then copy personal files manually to a computer or USB drive.
The local backup exists but cannot be found on the computer
Reconnect the phone, unlock it and select USB file transfer. Search internal storage for MIUI-backup-AllBackup or the folder name displayed by your model. Copy the complete folder and verify its contents before deleting anything from the phone.
Cloud backup says it is complete, but an app’s data is absent
This is expected for some data. Xiaomi says Xiaomi Cloud does not include app data, and Google says app developers determine what their apps back up and restore. Open the affected app and use its own backup or export process.

Keep the phone on power and a reliable network, then check the backup details again. Google says a Google One backup can take up to 24 hours. If the status never completes, preserve the local off-device copy and manually export the files and app data that matter before updating.

You need to factory-reset after the update
Do not reset until you have confirmed that the Xiaomi local backup was copied to a computer or USB drive. Xiaomi warns that a phone-stored local backup is permanently deleted by a factory reset. Use the external copy, cloud services and app-specific backups as your recovery sources.
What to do after the update
Once HyperOS finishes installing, let the phone reconnect to your accounts and allow pending cloud synchronization to settle. Check contacts, messages, photos, documents and the apps you identified as critical. Open WhatsApp and other protected apps to confirm that their own data is present. Keep the external local backup until these checks are complete; it is your fallback if an app needs to be reinstalled or the phone later requires a reset.
The safest pre-update plan is therefore not one button but several independent copies: Xiaomi local backup moved off the device, Xiaomi Cloud for supported Xiaomi items, Google Android backup for supported system data, and app-specific backups for information controlled by individual apps.
