These services cover different data, and none is a guaranteed, complete image of every app or a way to downgrade the operating system.
Use Wi‑Fi where possible, confirm that the correct Samsung or Google account is signed in, check available destination space, and save data inside important apps separately. The menus and supported categories can differ by Galaxy model, Android version, country and carrier.

Choose the backup route that fits your situation
There is no single “full Galaxy image” button. Samsung Cloud, Smart Switch and Google One each preserve different categories and restore in different ways. Use this comparison before you begin:

For irreplaceable photos, documents or recordings, keep an additional copy outside the phone. The official instructions establish the routes above, but they do not promise a measured speed, universal app coverage or an operating-system rollback.

Prepare the phone before making a backup
Confirm accounts and connectivity
Open Settings and check that the Samsung account you intend to use is signed in. If you rely on Google One, verify the intended Google account as well. A backup attached to a different account can appear to be missing when you set up the phone later.
Connect to a reliable Wi‑Fi network for cloud work. Samsung recommends Wi‑Fi and warns that mobile-data charges may apply when cellular data is used. Keep the phone connected until the service reports completion rather than switching networks during the process.
Check destination space
Look at available Samsung Cloud or Google storage, free space on the SD card or USB device, and free disk space on the computer. A local destination that is too small may force Smart Switch to omit selected categories. If the phone has a large media library, decide in advance which files will be copied separately so the backup does not fail at the final stage.

Make a short list of accounts and apps you cannot afford to lose. Include messaging, authenticator, password-manager, banking, notes, recording and work apps. Check each app for its own backup, export or cloud-sync control and confirm that you can sign back in. Samsung specifically cautions that data from third-party messenger apps might not transfer through Smart Switch, so an app-level check is essential.
Back up supported categories with Samsung Cloud
Samsung’s current support route is documented at Samsung Cloud – How to back up data on your phone. On supported Galaxy models, use the following path:
- Open Settings.
- Tap Accounts and backup.
- Choose Samsung Cloud.
- Tap Back up data.
- Select the categories you want to save.
- Tap Back up now.
- Leave the phone connected and wait for the completion message, then tap Done if it appears.
Labels and locations can differ with the phone’s software, region or carrier. If you do not see Samsung Cloud or a category listed above, do not assume that another menu provides identical coverage; check the options shown on that specific phone.

What Samsung Cloud may include
Samsung’s examples include call and message history; contacts and calendars saved on the device; clocks; selected settings such as accessibility options, ringtones, keyboard and Wi‑Fi settings; home-screen layout and supported wallpapers; apps and Samsung app settings; and voice recordings. This is an example list from Samsung’s guide, not a promise that every Galaxy model offers every item.

Contacts or calendars set up with a Google account are not synchronized through Samsung Cloud, so check the Google account’s own sync or backup status separately. Some large message files may be left out, and Samsung states that files larger than 1 GB cannot be backed up to Samsung Cloud.
Understand automatic Samsung Cloud backup
Automatic backup is a convenience, not a reason to skip a manual run before a major update. Samsung says automatic backup requires the phone to be charging, the screen to be off and Wi‑Fi to be connected. Start a manual backup when you need a known, recent timestamp, and wait for it to finish while the phone remains in the required conditions.
Create a local Smart Switch backup on removable storage
Smart Switch can write a backup to supported external storage, including an SD card or USB storage device. Samsung’s setup guidance is available at Set Up Your Galaxy Smartphone. A local copy is useful when cloud space is limited or when you want a second destination you control.
- Insert the SD card or connect the USB storage device using the connection supported by your Galaxy phone.
- Open Smart Switch on the phone.
- Choose the external-storage backup option and select the destination when prompted.
- Review the categories Smart Switch offers and select the data you want to copy.
- Start the backup and follow every on-screen instruction.
- Keep the phone and storage connected until Smart Switch reports that the backup is complete.
Check the phone’s port, required adapter and Smart Switch support before buying or relying on a drive. Samsung’s guidance supports the category of USB storage, not a particular connector, capacity or drive model. A drive that works with one Galaxy generation is not automatically compatible with another.
If the external device does not have enough room
Smart Switch may indicate that the destination lacks capacity. Samsung says some items may need to be deselected. Start with replaceable downloads or files you have already copied elsewhere, while retaining contacts, messages, settings and unique recordings. Do not keep removing categories blindly: note what was excluded and create a separate copy for anything important.

Back up with Smart Switch to a Windows PC or Mac
A computer backup avoids depending solely on cloud storage and can provide more room than a phone-sized removable device. Use the current Smart Switch computer application and a reliable USB connection, as described in Samsung’s setup guidance.
- Install and open the current Smart Switch application on the Windows PC or Mac.
- Connect the Galaxy phone to the computer with a suitable USB cable and unlock the phone if requested.
- Allow the phone and computer to recognize each other, following any on-screen permission prompt.
- In Smart Switch, choose the backup command and review the data categories offered.
- Select the categories to save and start the backup.
- Do not disconnect the cable, close the application or let the computer sleep until Smart Switch reports completion.
Keep the computer connected to power if the operation is large. Check that the backup destination is the computer drive you intended to use and that it has free space. Smart Switch’s availability of categories can vary, and Samsung does not describe the computer copy as a universal image of every third-party app, account token or protected data.
Use Google One as a separate Google-account route
Google One is useful when your Google account already holds device backups and you want to use Google’s restore flow during setup. Samsung’s instructions are in Google Drive – How to back up data on your Samsung Galaxy phone. Treat it as a distinct route rather than a duplicate Samsung Cloud record.
Before the update, confirm that the intended Google account is active and that its backup status is current. The documented Google One process is primarily a restore path during initial device setup, such as after a reset or when configuring a phone. Follow the setup screens and choose the available Google backup when prompted; the exact choices depend on the Galaxy model and Android version.
Do not interpret a Google One backup as a downgrade package. Samsung cautions that a backup made on a newer software version may not restore to an earlier version. A backup can help bring supported data to a compatible setup, but it does not guarantee that the previous operating-system build, every application state or every setting can be reinstated.
Handle messaging and app-specific data separately
Smart Switch is not a guarantee for third-party messenger content. Samsung’s Singapore support page, updated April 2, 2024, notes that data from third-party messenger apps might not transfer: How to Transfer and Backup Data Using Smart Switch on a Galaxy Phone.

Open each high-value app before updating and look for controls named Backup, Export, Transfer, Sync or Chat backup. Complete the app’s own procedure, note the account used, and check when it last ran. For an authenticator, generate its supported transfer or recovery method before the update; for a notes or recording app, export files in the format the app supports. Do not assume that an app’s presence in a Smart Switch category means its private database or sign-in credentials will be restored.
Some services keep data on their own servers and require only a later sign-in, while others store information locally. The available behavior differs by app, and the cited Samsung guidance does not establish a rule for every messenger or utility. The practical test is whether the app shows a recent backup or export and whether you know the credentials needed to retrieve it.
Verify the backup before installing the update
Starting a backup is not the same as having a usable backup. Perform this check after each route you use:
- Return to Samsung Cloud or Smart Switch and confirm the latest completion state and date or time, when shown.
- Review the categories selected and write down any items you intentionally excluded.
- For a computer or removable-storage copy, confirm that the destination is still connected and visibly contains the backup created by Smart Switch.
- Check the Google account’s backup status separately if you are relying on Google One.
- Open each important messenger or other app and confirm its own backup or export status.
- Keep the phone charged and connected to Wi‑Fi while the update downloads and begins.
A completion indicator confirms that the service finished its operation; it does not prove that every file, protected app database or account credential is included. For especially valuable files, open the separate copy on the computer or storage device and confirm that the files you expected are present.

Samsung Cloud is missing or offers fewer categories
Samsung Cloud features vary by model, Android version, country and carrier. Check that the Samsung account is signed in, install any pending system components only when you are ready, and use the categories the phone actually presents. Do not substitute Google-account contacts or calendars into the Samsung Cloud list; verify their Google sync separately.

Reconnect to stable Wi‑Fi, check available cloud space and leave the phone charging with the screen off if you are relying on automatic backup. Large files can be the cause: files over 1 GB cannot be backed up to Samsung Cloud, and some large message files may be omitted. Copy those files to a computer or compatible storage instead.

Smart Switch cannot see the storage device
Disconnect and reconnect the device, check the cable or adapter, and verify that the phone and storage format are supported by Smart Switch. Capacity and connector compatibility are device-specific. If the destination is too small, deselect items only after deciding where those items will be copied.
The computer backup will not start
Use the current Smart Switch computer app, unlock the phone, accept any USB permission prompt and try a known-good data cable or computer port. Keep the phone connected while the app is preparing the backup. If the process completes with fewer categories than expected, use app-specific export features and a separate file copy for the missing data.
An app’s data is absent after setup
Sign in with the same account used for the app’s own backup, then follow that app’s restore instructions. Smart Switch, Samsung Cloud and Google One do not guarantee transfer of every third-party database. If the app never showed a recent backup or export before the update, the built-in phone backups may not be able to recreate it.
A practical two-layer plan for a major update
For ordinary personal data, one verified cloud route plus one local route is a sensible balance. Run Samsung Cloud or Google One for the account ecosystem you use, then create a Smart Switch copy on a computer or compatible external device. Add app-specific exports for messengers, authenticators, notes and recordings.
If you have little time, prioritize in this order:
- Save unique photos, videos, documents and recordings to a computer or supported external storage.
- Run Samsung Cloud or Google One and wait for a visible completion status.
- Run Smart Switch to a computer or external device if one is available.
- Complete each important app’s own backup or export.
- Verify the dates, destinations and categories before tapping the system update command.
This plan gives you multiple recovery sources without claiming that any service can reverse the update. If the update changes an app’s behavior, restore only the supported data through the relevant service and follow the phone’s current Android setup flow.
What these backups cannot promise
- They do not create a guaranteed, byte-for-byte image of every Galaxy phone.
- They do not ensure that every third-party messenger, protected app database or sign-in token transfers.
- Samsung Cloud does not synchronize Google-account contacts and calendars.
- Files larger than 1 GB are not eligible for Samsung Cloud backup.
- A newer-version Google backup may not restore to an earlier Android version.
- A completed backup is not evidence that the operating-system update can be rolled back.
Use the services for the data they are designed to preserve, confirm the result on the actual phone, and keep a separate copy of irreplaceable files. That is the dependable preparation Samsung’s documented options can support before a major Galaxy update.
