How to Back Up a Jellyfin Library of Ripped Blu-rays

Back up a Jellyfin Blu-ray library as two separate datasets: the ripped movie files and Jellyfin’s server state. Jellyfin’s built-in backup creates a ZIP containing the database and whichever metadata, subtitles, and trickplay data you select; its documented contents do not include the movie files. Copy every media path to separate storage, create a Jellyfin backup (or copy its data and configuration directories), move both copies outside the original disk’s failure domain, and perform a test restoration.

What you must back up

A recoverable Jellyfin installation has two parts that are easy to confuse:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • Media: the MKV, M2TS, MP4, or other files produced by your Blu-ray ripping and transcoding workflow.
  • Jellyfin server state: the database, configuration, artwork and other metadata, subtitles, and trickplay data that describe those files to Jellyfin.

The built-in backup protects the second category. The official backup documentation says the database is always included and lets an administrator select metadata, subtitles, and trickplay. It does not list the ripped movie files in the archive. A ZIP from Dashboard → Backups therefore cannot recreate a deleted film unless the film files exist in another copy.

Plan the recovery in this order: inventory every library location, copy the media to an independent destination, back up Jellyfin’s state, then verify that both can be restored. Your required capacity and schedule depend on the number and size of rips, retention period, filesystem, and recovery objective; the title alone cannot determine a safe drive size.

Inventory every media location before copying

A Jellyfin library can contain folders from several server locations. Start in the library settings and record every path, including paths mounted from another disk, USB enclosure, network share, or container volume. Do not assume that a folder named Movies is the complete collection.

Build a media inventory

  1. List each library and its configured folder paths.
  2. For each path, record the filesystem or mount point and the amount of data currently used.
  3. Check for separate folders holding extras, concerts, home videos, subtitles, or alternate encodes that Jellyfin also indexes.
  4. Note the exact mount paths presented to Jellyfin. A replacement server must present the files at those paths, or you must edit the library locations after restoration.
  5. Repeat the inventory for every disk and share. A backup that omits one configured location is incomplete even if the Jellyfin database restores successfully.

Keep the inventory with the backup. Include a dated export or screenshot of the library paths and a simple file listing so you can identify missing volumes during a rebuild.

How much storage should the backup need?

Measure your actual media folders rather than multiplying a disc label by the number of films. Jellyfin’s storage documentation gives an illustrative range: a single 50 GB Blu-ray remux might consume about 60 GB, or as little as 15 GB after transcoding. That is an example, not a sizing rule. Your chosen audio tracks, subtitle streams, video codec, extras, and retention policy determine the real total.

Calculate a practical target

  1. Record the used space of every media path.
  2. Add room for library growth during the period you intend to keep the destination.
  3. Add space for at least one additional copy if you plan to retain historical versions or a second local copy.
  4. Measure Jellyfin’s data and configuration directories separately. They are usually much smaller than the films, but subtitle and trickplay selections can make the ZIP larger than a minimal database-only backup.
  5. Leave free space on the destination for temporary ZIP creation and restore operations.

Never treat the 50 GB example as a promise that a particular disc or library will fit a particular drive. Capacity should be based on your measured files and the copies you actually intend to retain.

Choose a destination outside the failure domain

The copy must remain usable when the primary server disk fails, is deleted, becomes encrypted, or is damaged. A second folder on the same physical disk is not independent protection.

Destination Separation and capacity Restore considerations Operational effort
Direct-attached external drive Independent when unplugged or stored separately; capacity is fixed until the drive is replaced. Reconnect the drive, reproduce the original mount paths or update Jellyfin libraries, then restore server state. Simple manual or scheduled copying; completion and disconnection must be checked.
Network storage Can expand with additional disks, but a device beside the server can still share a room, power event, or account failure. Re-establish the network share and credentials before Jellyfin scans the restored libraries. Convenient for recurring jobs; monitor the share, permissions, and available space.
Remote or cloud destination Provides geographic separation; capacity and upload limits depend on the service you select. Plan for downloading the media and for preserving the directory layout and timestamps your recovery process needs. Automation reduces handling, but failed transfers, deletions, and retention settings require monitoring.

Jellyfin’s storage documentation mentions rclone as a popular way to integrate cloud storage. That identifies an integration option, not a guarantee that synchronization is a backup. Configure retention or versioning so an accidental deletion or corrupted source does not immediately remove the only recovery copy.

A mechanical drive is reasonable for media files. Jellyfin cautions against using ZFS-formatted mechanical drives for Jellyfin server data other than media because of poor performance; that narrow warning is not a ban on mechanical storage for the films themselves.

Copy the ripped movie files

Use the copying method appropriate to your operating system, but preserve the directory structure that Jellyfin expects. Copy, do not move, the source files during the initial backup.

File-copy procedure

  1. Pause ripping, transcoding, and large library reorganizations so files are not changing while they are copied.
  2. Create a destination folder for each source volume or library path. Keep a clear mapping such as Movies-Disk-1 and Movies-Disk-2.
  3. Copy all media files and associated sidecar subtitles, artwork, and metadata files that you intentionally keep with the films.
  4. Enable the copy tool’s verification option, if available. At minimum, compare source and destination file counts and total sizes after the copy.
  5. Record the source path, destination path, date, and result in the inventory.
  6. Disconnect or restrict the destination after the job completes if it is a directly attached drive. This limits damage from a later deletion or malware event.

Do not copy only the folders currently visible in Jellyfin’s home screen. Jellyfin may index multiple locations, and a film can be absent from the interface because of a scan problem while still existing on disk. The inventory of configured paths is the authoritative starting point.

Create Jellyfin’s built-in backup

The built-in backup feature is documented as added in Jellyfin 10.11. Confirm the installed release before relying on the interface; labels and availability can differ in older versions.

Web-interface steps

  1. Sign in with an administrator account.
  2. Open Dashboard → Backups.
  3. Choose Create Backup.
  4. Select the optional data you need, such as metadata, subtitles, and trickplay. The database is included automatically.
  5. Confirm that the configured backup location has enough free space. Jellyfin’s minimum-space check may not account for unusually large subtitle or trickplay backups, so keep additional headroom.
  6. Wait for the ZIP archive to finish, then copy that ZIP to storage independent of the server’s primary disk.
  7. Give the copied archive a dated and versioned name, and store the Jellyfin version and data/configuration paths beside it.

The archive is valuable for rebuilding Jellyfin’s catalog and settings, but it is not a media archive. Keep it with the separately copied movie files, not instead of them.

Where the built-in ZIP is normally written

Backup locations vary by platform, installation method, volume mapping, and custom configuration. Jellyfin documents these defaults:

Installation Documented default backup directory
Official Docker image <volume path>/config/data/backups
LinuxServer.io Docker image <volume path>/config/data/data/backups
Debian or Ubuntu package /var/lib/jellyfin/data/backups
Windows service installation %PROGRAMDATA%JellyfinServerdatabackups

These are examples, not universal paths. Check the actual configured data directory, container volume mapping, and backup setting on your server before copying anything. A path copied from a different installation can point to an empty directory or the wrong instance.

Make a manual backup of data and configuration

A manual backup is useful when you want a transparent directory copy, when the built-in feature is unavailable, or when your deployment already snapshots mapped volumes. Jellyfin’s guidance is to copy both the data and configuration directories to a dated, versioned location.

Identify the directories

The metadata database defaults to <Data Directory>/jellyfin.db. The database alone is not a complete server backup: configuration files and the other data selected by your recovery plan must accompany it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

On a Debian-style installation, Jellyfin documents these example directories:

  • Data: /var/lib/jellyfin
  • Configuration: /etc/jellyfin

Package defaults differ on other operating systems, and containers normally store these locations in mapped volumes. Inspect the running installation’s configured paths rather than blindly copying the Debian examples.

Safe manual-copy sequence

  1. Stop or quiesce Jellyfin so the database and configuration are not being written during the copy.
  2. Copy the complete data directory and complete configuration directory to independent storage.
  3. Preserve directory names, permissions, and a note of the Jellyfin version that created the copy.
  4. Confirm that the destination contains jellyfin.db under the expected data directory and that the configuration files are present.
  5. Start Jellyfin again and check that the service and libraries operate normally.

Keep either this manual copy or the built-in ZIP as a separate recovery point. Do not overwrite the only copy with a newer backup until the newer copy has completed and been checked.

Back up before every upgrade

Create and move a usable backup before upgrading Jellyfin. Jellyfin states that it has no downgrade mechanism and that migrations are applied when the new version starts. If an upgrade causes a problem, the documented recovery route is restoring a backup; as the official guide puts it, “The only way to restore your active instance back to the old version is to restore a backup.”

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For each upgrade, retain:

  • The built-in ZIP or manual data/configuration copy made before the upgrade.
  • The exact Jellyfin version and installation method.
  • The media mount paths and container volume mappings.
  • A note describing any database or configuration migration that occurred.

Do not delete the pre-upgrade copy immediately after the new version starts. Keep it until you have confirmed playback, library scans, users, scheduled tasks, and any external storage mounts.

Restore after a failure

Restore a built-in ZIP from the web interface

  1. Install or start a compatible Jellyfin version on the replacement system.
  2. Make the destination media available and recreate the paths recorded in your inventory, or prepare to edit the library locations.
  3. Open the administrator dashboard and go to Backups.
  4. Choose the restore action and select the saved ZIP archive.
  5. Allow the process to finish. The web restore restarts the server and makes it unavailable while restoration runs.
  6. Sign in again, verify that libraries, users, metadata, and configuration are present, and then scan or correct media paths as needed.

Jellyfin also documents a command-line startup option, --restore-archive PATH_TO_BACKUP_ZIP, for restoring an archive. Use the exact syntax supported by your installed release and service wrapper.

Restore manually copied directories

  1. Stop Jellyfin completely.
  2. Move the current data and configuration directories aside instead of deleting them. This preserves a rollback point if the selected backup is wrong.
  3. Copy the saved directories into the expected locations, retaining the directory names and permissions required by the service account.
  4. Check version compatibility. A backup from an older release may require installing or temporarily running the corresponding older version before moving forward.
  5. Start Jellyfin and inspect the logs and dashboard for database, permission, or path errors.
  6. Confirm that each media mount is present and that the library paths resolve to the copied films.

Restoring server state cannot recreate media that was never copied. If a library opens with missing items, first check the media mounts and path mappings, then check whether the media copy contains the expected files.

Verify that the backup is actually usable

A completed copy is not proof of recoverability. Schedule a verification exercise on a spare system or an isolated directory.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Open the media destination and confirm representative large files can be read from beginning to end.
  • Check a sample of films from every source disk, not just one folder.
  • Restore the Jellyfin ZIP or manual directories to a test instance when practical.
  • Confirm that the database opens, users and libraries appear, and metadata is available at the selected level.
  • Test at least one title whose files are on each mount or network share.
  • Document any path changes required on a replacement server.

If verification fails, keep the original source intact, correct the copy job, and create a new recovery point. Never label an untested destination as your only backup.

Common failure modes and fixes

“The backup restored, but my movies are missing”

The ZIP contains Jellyfin server data, not the ripped movie files. Restore the independent media copy, reconnect every configured path, and rescan the libraries.

“Only some films returned”

One or more library locations were omitted from the media copy, or a disk/share is not mounted. Compare the inventory with the restored library paths and check each volume.

“The backup directory is empty”

The installation may use a different data directory, container mapping, or custom backup location. Check the active configuration and the platform-specific defaults rather than copying a path from another machine.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

One-click scans. No signup required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“The ZIP will not fit”

Free space may be insufficient, particularly when subtitles or trickplay are selected. Free space on the configured backup volume, reduce optional selections for that recovery point, or use a manual data/configuration copy while retaining the media backup separately.

“The upgraded server will not start with the old files”

Stop the service, preserve the failed directories, review the recorded version, and restore the pre-upgrade backup with a compatible Jellyfin release. Jellyfin does not provide a general downgrade mechanism.

A workable recurring policy

Choose a cadence based on how often your library and server settings change. Run the media copy after adding a batch of rips and run a Jellyfin state backup before upgrades and after significant configuration changes. Keep at least one copy disconnected or otherwise protected from changes on the primary server, and keep a geographically separate copy if losing the entire room or site is a concern.

Use dated names, retain more than one recovery point when storage permits, and monitor every automated job for completion rather than assuming that a scheduled task succeeded. Recheck capacity as the library grows. The correct plan is the one that can restore both the files and the Jellyfin state within the time you actually need, using paths and versions you have recorded.
