Then give the agent only the permissions and environment it needs. The exact command depends on whether the database is PostgreSQL, MySQL, SQLite, or a hosted service, and on whether you need a one-time pre-change snapshot or point-in-time recovery.
A dump file by itself is not a recovery plan. A successful backup must be readable, protected from the same failure as the live database, and accompanied by a tested way to restore it. Database rows also are not the whole change boundary: an agent may alter files, configuration, queues, or third-party systems that a database restore cannot undo.

Start by defining what the agent is allowed to change
Write down the target before running any backup. Record the database engine and version, the database name, the environment, the schema or schemas in scope, the backup destination, and the person responsible for the credentials. Confirm whether the agent is connected to a local development copy, staging, a session database, or production business data. An agent’s session database is not automatically the same thing as an application’s primary database.
Also map the ways the agent can write. Direct SQL is only one path. The agent might run migrations, execute shell commands, call an application that writes indirectly, or modify files that are later imported into the database. Note whether it can issue arbitrary SQL, create or drop objects, alter permissions, or access the host filesystem.

Use a disposable development or staging target whenever the task permits. If production access is unavoidable, establish the recovery point, the maximum acceptable data loss, and the person who can stop the run before granting write access.
- Recovery point: decide whether one snapshot immediately before the change is enough or whether you need recovery to a time between multiple writes.
- Recovery target: identify an isolated database or test environment where the backup can be restored without overwriting production.
- Change boundary: list application files, configuration, object storage, queues, and external services that require their own protection.
Choose the backup method that matches the database
Use the engine’s supported mechanism rather than copying files casually. PostgreSQL documents SQL dumps, filesystem-level backups, and continuous archiving as different approaches. MySQL documents logical dumps and binary logs. Live SQLite databases require a backup method that understands SQLite’s locking and journal behavior.
| Database or service | Suitable pre-change method | Important limitation | Restore check |
|---|---|---|---|
| PostgreSQL | pg_dump for a logical snapshot; filesystem backup or continuous archiving for larger or point-in-time requirements |
The dump is a snapshot at the time it starts; large recovery designs have additional operational requirements | Restore with psql for plain SQL or pg_restore for non-text formats into a separate database |
| MySQL | mysqldump for an online logical backup; binary logs for subsequent point-in-time recovery |
--single-transaction provides a consistent read for InnoDB, not automatically for nontransactional tables |
Load the dump into an isolated MySQL database and inspect errors, schema, and representative rows |
| SQLite | The application’s documented backup process, using SQLite’s online backup facilities where supported | A raw copy of a live file can be torn or inconsistent when -wal, -shm, or journal files are active |
Open the resulting database with the application or SQLite tooling and run representative reads |
| Hosted database | Use the provider’s documented snapshot, export, or point-in-time recovery feature, and create an independent copy when possible | Labels, retention, restore time, and cross-region behavior vary by provider and plan | Perform a restore exercise in a nonproduction project or instance |
Back up PostgreSQL safely
Use a logical dump for a one-time checkpoint
PostgreSQL’s pg_dump creates a dump representing a snapshot of the database when the dump begins. The PostgreSQL documentation describes these dumps as internally consistent. A plain-text example is:
pg_dump mydb > mydb-before-agent.sql
The command assumes that connection settings and read permissions are already configured. Supply credentials through the normal secure mechanism for your environment; do not place passwords in shell history, prompts, source code, or an agent transcript.
For a non-text format that is handled by pg_restore, use a command such as:
pg_dump -Fc mydb -f mydb-before-agent.dump
A dump can run from a remote host that has database access and ordinarily does not block normal operations, although operations requiring exclusive locks can still conflict. Confirm the installed client version and any extensions or ownership requirements before relying on the file as your only recovery option.
Use broader PostgreSQL recovery methods when the snapshot is not enough
A logical dump is appropriate for a named checkpoint before an agent run. If the database is large, takes too long to reload, or must be recoverable to a point between changes, PostgreSQL’s filesystem-level backup and continuous-archiving approaches may fit better. They require more operational setup than a single dump. Decide based on the recovery point, restoration time, portability, and the team’s ability to operate and test the process; the official documentation does not establish one universal best method.

Back up MySQL without assuming every table is transactional
Create a narrowly scoped logical dump
MySQL presents mysqldump as an online logical backup tool. For a particular database, a basic checkpoint can look like:
mysqldump appdb --single-transaction > appdb-before-agent.sql
Check the installed MySQL version and the metadata your application requires before adding options for routines, events, triggers, users, or other objects. Avoid an all-server dump when the agent only needs to change one application database; narrowing the scope makes the recovery decision and access review clearer.
Understand what --single-transaction does
For InnoDB tables, --single-transaction uses a consistent read so the dump can proceed while ordinary writes continue. That guarantee does not automatically cover nontransactional tables. The MySQL manual cautions that nontransactional tables must not change during the backup if you need them to be consistent. Inventory the storage engine for every table in scope and coordinate a write pause or another engine-specific consistency method where necessary.
Keep binary logs when you need point-in-time recovery
A logical dump gives you a starting state. MySQL’s binary logs can record changes after that point and support point-in-time recovery when the required logs and coordinates are retained. Record the position using the procedure documented for your MySQL deployment, copy the needed logs to safe storage, and document how they would be replayed. A dump without the subsequent binary logs cannot recover changes that occurred after the dump began.

Handle SQLite and embedded databases differently
Do not copy a live SQLite file with a generic file-copy command and assume the result is sound. An active database may have a write-ahead log, shared-memory file, or rollback journal whose contents must be coordinated with the main file.
OpenClaw’s backup documentation illustrates this hazard for its own state: raw copies of a live .sqlite, -wal, -shm, or journal set can be torn or corrupt, so it uses SQLite’s online backup API. That guidance is specific to OpenClaw and should not be treated as a universal command for every SQLite application. Follow the application’s documented backup path, or use a verified SQLite online-backup implementation that coordinates with the live connection.
After creating the backup, open it in an isolated copy of the application or with SQLite tooling and run representative reads. A file that exists on disk is not proof that the application can recover from it.

Put the backup outside the live failure path
Store the protected copy somewhere a mistaken agent command, database corruption, or host failure cannot remove both the live database and the backup. MySQL’s documentation gives another machine and removable media such as tape or DVD as examples of separate storage. The same principle applies to local development and hosted systems: use a distinct storage location and credentials, not merely another filename in the database directory.

- Encrypt the dump or snapshot at rest when it contains personal, financial, authentication, or otherwise sensitive data.
- Restrict read and delete permissions to the people and services that need recovery access.
- Keep encryption keys separate from the backup files and protect the key-management path.
- Do not commit dumps, connection strings, or passwords to source control, prompts, issue trackers, or agent logs.
- Record the database, environment, creation time, format, client version, and intended restore target alongside the backup.
An external hard drive can be one optional local destination for a dump, but one drive is not a complete plan for important data. Maintain another appropriate copy and periodically test that the copies remain readable. The database documentation does not prescribe a particular drive, cloud vendor, or retention number.
Verify the restore before granting write access
Restore PostgreSQL plain SQL into a new database
Create a database used only for the check, then stop on SQL errors rather than allowing a partial load to look successful:
createdb mydb_restore_check
psql --set=ON_ERROR_STOP=on --single-transaction mydb_restore_check < mydb-before-agent.sql
PostgreSQL warns that psql continues after SQL errors by default. That behavior can leave a partial database. ON_ERROR_STOP makes the failure visible; --single-transaction asks for an all-or-nothing transaction, with the trade-off that one error can roll back a long-running restore. Choose the behavior deliberately for the size and contents of the dump.
Restore PostgreSQL non-text formats with pg_restore
For a custom-format dump, use the matching restore utility and an isolated target:
createdb mydb_restore_check
pg_restore --exit-on-error --dbname=mydb_restore_check mydb-before-agent.dump
Use the transaction and ownership options appropriate to the installed PostgreSQL version and your deployment. Never add destructive cleanup options against production merely to make a test convenient.
Check the restored result, not just the exit code
Confirm that the expected schemas, tables, indexes, extensions, permissions, and representative data are present. Run application-level smoke tests against the isolated target. Check row counts or known records where that is safe and meaningful, and save the restore output with the backup record. A command that exits successfully without the required objects is not a usable recovery.

Restore MySQL and SQLite independently
For a MySQL logical dump, create a separate database and load the file with the client appropriate to your deployment:
mysql appdb_restore_check < appdb-before-agent.sql
Review errors, inspect the schema, and test representative reads. For SQLite, open the backup through the application or the same SQLite library that will be used during recovery. Keep the check isolated so triggers, migrations, or startup jobs cannot alter the source database.

After the restore test passes, create or select a scoped account for the task. Grant only the database, schema, tables, and operations required. Routine code changes rarely need server-wide administration, account management, or permission-granting rights. Keep production credentials out of prompts and logs, and inject secrets through the application’s protected configuration mechanism.
OpenAI Agents SDK session guidance states: “The application must authorize access to each session and restrict access to the database file, its containing storage, and backups.” For agent sessions, enforce that authorization at the application boundary as well as at the database boundary. Restrict the session database, its storage, and its backups, and treat direct edits to an agent session database as sensitive: they can change the history the agent reads later. For shared or untrusted storage, use storage controls or custom integrity enforcement.
Before the run, save a named or timestamped backup and record exactly which database it represents. Review proposed migrations and destructive SQL, especially broad UPDATE, DELETE, DROP, truncate, reset, and permission changes. If the agent can execute application code, review the code path as well as the SQL.
Define recovery for effects a database restore cannot undo
Restoring rows does not automatically reverse an email sent, payment submitted, queue message published, file overwritten, object deleted, configuration changed, or external API call made by the agent. Before the run, identify those effects and preserve the relevant application files, configuration, object-storage versions, or external-system records separately.

Choose between a snapshot and point-in-time recovery
| Decision question | What to evaluate |
|---|---|
| How much data may be lost? | A single pre-change dump covers one checkpoint. Continuous archiving or binary logs are needed when recovery must reach a later or intermediate time. |
| How large is the database? | Compare dump duration, storage size, restore duration, and the operational complexity of filesystem or continuous-archiving methods. |
| Can writes continue? | PostgreSQL dumps are internally consistent snapshots; MySQL consistency depends on table engines and the options used; nontransactional tables may require a write pause. |
| What must be included? | Check schemas, indexes, extensions, routines, events, triggers, ownership, permissions, and any data outside the database engine. |
| Where will it be restored? | Confirm version compatibility, extensions, network access, secrets, storage capacity, and an isolated destination before the agent starts. |
| Has recovery been tested? | Prefer the method your team has restored successfully, not merely the method that produced a file. |
PostgreSQL’s documentation explicitly distinguishes SQL dumps, filesystem backups, and continuous archiving. MySQL documentation distinguishes logical dumps from binary-log recovery. The available documentation does not provide comparable restore timings, costs, or a universal retention schedule, so measure those for your own workload rather than borrowing an unsupported number.
Common failure modes and fixes
The backup file exists but will not restore
Check that the file was copied completely, that encryption keys are available, and that the restore client supports the dump format. Recreate the backup if the source was interrupted, then repeat the isolated restore test.
The restore reports errors but appears to finish
Do not treat completion as success. PostgreSQL can continue after SQL errors unless configured to stop, leaving a partial database. Re-run with explicit error stopping, review the output, and validate required objects and data.
Rows are inconsistent across tables
For MySQL, inspect whether nontransactional tables changed during the dump. Coordinate a write pause or use a method that provides the needed consistency. For SQLite, replace casual file copying with the application-supported online backup process.
The agent changed more than the intended schema
Revoke or narrow its credentials, inspect indirect application write paths, and compare the actual database and filesystem changes with the pre-run record. Restore only after stopping further writes and preserving logs.
The dump contains secrets
Treat it as production-sensitive data: restrict access, encrypt it, separate keys, remove it from source control and logs, and delete temporary copies according to your organization’s approved policy.
Quick Recap
A concise preflight checklist
- Identify the engine, version, environment, database, schema, and all agent write paths.
- Choose a native backup or snapshot method that matches the required recovery point.
- Create a named pre-change backup without exposing credentials.
- Copy it to protected storage outside the live write path.
- Restore it into an isolated target and verify the schema and representative data.
- Preserve application files, configuration, and external-system state that a database restore cannot cover.
- Grant the agent a scoped account and the least access needed for the task.
- Review migrations and destructive operations before execution.
- Record the run, inspect its effects afterward, and use the tested recovery procedure if anything goes wrong.
