The reliable way to avoid an NFL streaming blackout is to identify three things before kickoff: whether the game is in your ZIP-code market, which broadcaster owns that game window, and whether your device is supported. Start with the NFL’s Ways to Watch ZIP-code guide, then match the result to your existing TV provider, an over-the-air station, NFL+, or NFL Sunday Ticket. Local Sunday-afternoon games generally use CBS or FOX; NFL+ is not a live out-of-market Sunday-afternoon service; and NFL+ live video cannot be cast from a phone or tablet to a television.
The quickest way to find a legal live stream
- Confirm the matchup and kickoff time. Use the current NFL schedule because assignments can change.
- Enter your ZIP code in the NFL Ways to Watch guide. Select the TV providers and streaming services you actually have. The guide personalizes available games by location and provider.
- Classify the game. A Sunday-afternoon game may be in-market on CBS or FOX, while an out-of-market Sunday-afternoon game is the Sunday Ticket use case. Primetime and special national games follow the broadcaster listed for that matchup.
- Check the viewing device. NFL+ live local and primetime video is designed for phones and tablets. It cannot be cast to a television during the live event.
- Verify the provider’s current listing before paying. Package names, prices, channel lineups and game assignments can change by season and by location.
A message saying a game is “blackout,” “unavailable,” or “not available in your area” does not identify one universal technical failure. It usually reflects a local-market rule, an out-of-market rights boundary, an exclusive national broadcast, a location mismatch, or a device limitation.

What “blackout” means for a current NFL viewer
Modern streaming restrictions are primarily rights and distribution rules. The NFL’s current support material says games are subject to broadcast rights and blackout restrictions, while subscription terms describe which games a service may show in a particular place and on a particular device.
Local-market restriction
“Local” means the game is available on television in your local market, not that the game is available everywhere in your state. A local affiliate may carry one Sunday-afternoon matchup while a nearby market carries another. Your address and the provider’s local channel map determine the result.

Out-of-market restriction
An out-of-market Sunday-afternoon game is outside the local broadcast area associated with your ZIP code. NFL+ does not provide those games live. The NFL identifies Sunday Ticket, distributed through YouTube or YouTube TV, as the route for that category.
National exclusivity
Some games are assigned to a national network or platform. A local CBS or FOX affiliate is not automatically entitled to every national game, and having NFL+ does not replace the service named for a particular primetime or special broadcast.
Device or platform restriction
A subscription can be valid while the chosen playback method is unsupported. NFL+ live local and primetime events are limited to phones or tablets, and the NFL says they cannot be cast to a television or another device during those live events.

Older NFL policies sometimes tied local television to ticket sales and sellouts. That historic mechanism should not be used to diagnose a current app message. Today’s streaming decision is generally controlled by market, rights holder, account location, platform and device.
How to use the NFL ZIP-code guide correctly
Enter the location where you will watch
Use the ZIP code for the viewing location, not necessarily the billing address on a subscription. If you are traveling, the available local affiliate can change. A guide result is therefore a location check, not a permanent entitlement to one channel.
Select only services you can open
The guide can show several possible outlets. Mark the services you actually subscribe to, and then confirm that the listed channel is included in your plan and local lineup. A service appearing in the guide does not mean your account automatically includes it.
Read the game window, not just the team names
The same team may appear in different distribution arrangements from week to week. Record the date, kickoff time, network and platform shown for the specific matchup. This prevents assuming that a Sunday-afternoon local game and a Thursday-night national game follow the same rule.
Watching an in-market Sunday-afternoon game
For a game assigned to your local market, the usual rights holders are CBS or FOX. Your legal options are the local affiliate through an eligible pay-TV or live-TV provider, or an over-the-air broadcast where the station’s signal reaches your address.

- Compatibility and Usage Tips: Not suitable for older analog televisions; supports smart TVs and digital TVs. For optimal signal reception, try placing the antenna near a window or in other locations, and test both vertical and horizontal orientations.
- Easy to Install: Plug the coaxial cable from your digital indoor HDTV antenna into the ANT/IN connector on the back of your TV, point the TV antenna toward your local TV tower and scan for channels. (Check "dtv gov maps" for available channels).
Pay-TV or live-TV provider
Check the provider’s local channel lineup rather than relying on a national channel number. Two homes in different markets can receive different affiliates, and a temporary local-station outage is a provider issue rather than an NFL+ entitlement.
Over-the-air reception
An indoor HDTV antenna can be useful when the CBS or FOX affiliate broadcasts over the air and your address receives a sufficient signal. The NFL lists OTA broadcasts as a TV option. An antenna does not unlock an out-of-market game, bypass a rights restriction, or guarantee reception through walls, terrain or distance. Signal availability is address-dependent, so check a local reception map and the station’s transmitter information before buying equipment.
When the local station is missing
If the ZIP guide identifies a local affiliate but your provider does not carry it, compare the provider’s current lineup, the station’s own broadcast schedule and OTA reception. Do not switch to NFL+ expecting the same television feed: NFL+ access is governed by its own local and national rights and device rules.

What NFL+ does and does not provide
NFL+ is a domestic subscription service with a narrower live-video scope than many viewers expect. The NFL’s support page states: “Out-of-market Sunday afternoon games are not available live on NFL+ and require NFL Sunday Ticket.” That is a rights boundary, not a problem that can be fixed by reinstalling the app.
Live games that may be included
NFL+ can provide live local and primetime regular-season and postseason games when those games are available under the service’s rights for your location. Live preseason availability is separately subject to local and other geographic blackouts. The exact game list remains location- and season-dependent.
Supported live-video devices
For the live local and primetime events covered by NFL+, plan to watch on a phone or tablet. The NFL’s terms describe live regular-season and postseason access as generally phone/tablet-only, with content varying by geography, platform and device.
Audio and replay alternatives
NFL+ live audio is available for every game, according to NFL support. NFL+ Premium adds RedZone and game replays. Audio and replays can be useful when live video is unavailable, but neither changes the live-video market restriction.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhy NFL+ will not cast to your TV
During an NFL+ live local or primetime event, the phone or tablet is the supported screen. The NFL states that these live events cannot be cast to a television or other device. Casting may work for other app content, such as replays or non-live features, but success with those features does not create a workaround for the live event.

Check the device before subscribing
- If your priority is a television screen, identify the broadcaster or TV provider in the ZIP guide first.
- If your priority is NFL+ live video, plan for a compatible phone or tablet and a stable connection.
- Do not buy an adapter, casting dongle or cable solely to defeat the NFL+ live-event restriction; the limitation is part of the service’s rights and device policy.
When Sunday Ticket is the appropriate route
Sunday Ticket is intended for live out-of-market Sunday-afternoon games. It is distributed through YouTube and YouTube TV and is separate from NFL+. Having NFL+ does not bundle or unlock Sunday Ticket.
Verify the game before purchase
Use the NFL ZIP guide and the Sunday Ticket listing for the exact matchup. A game that is local in your current ZIP code is not an out-of-market Sunday Ticket use case, while a game outside your local area may be. Confirm the package, current price and any location eligibility directly with the provider before checkout.
Understand what Sunday Ticket does not cover
Sunday Ticket is not a universal replacement for every NFL broadcast. Primetime and special national games follow their assigned broadcaster, and local-market games can remain subject to local distribution rules. Read the week’s listing instead of assuming that one subscription covers every kickoff.

Primetime and special national games
Thursday-night, Sunday-night, Monday-night and other special games can be assigned to different networks or platforms. The NFL’s schedule and Ways to Watch guide identify the applicable outlet for your ZIP code. A game’s national status does not guarantee that every streaming service carries it, and a local Sunday-afternoon channel does not establish the rights to a primetime event.
Use the named broadcaster
Open the service or channel listed for that matchup, then check whether your plan includes it. If the guide lists a network available through your TV provider, use that provider’s local channel listing. If it lists a dedicated streaming platform, follow that platform’s current eligibility and device requirements.
Geographic eligibility: states, territories and international viewing
NFL subscription terms updated September 4, 2026, state that NFL+ products are available in the 50 U.S. states and Washington, D.C., where permitted by law. NFL support separately says NFL+ is not available in U.S. territories and directs viewers outside the United States to DAZN for international Game Pass. Those are different availability questions from a domestic local-market restriction.
Content can vary by geographic location, platform and device. A move, trip or inaccurate location signal can therefore change the result shown in the app or ZIP guide. Keep your account location and the viewing location in mind when diagnosing an error.

- Write down the exact error. Distinguish “not in your market,” “not available on this device,” a sign-in failure and a missing channel.
- Recheck the schedule. Confirm teams, date, kickoff time and the listed broadcaster.
- Run the ZIP-code lookup. Enter the place where you are watching and select your actual services.
- Determine market status. If the game is a local Sunday-afternoon broadcast, look for CBS or FOX through your provider or OTA. If it is out-of-market Sunday afternoon, evaluate Sunday Ticket.
- Test the device requirement. For NFL+ live local or primetime video, switch to a supported phone or tablet rather than attempting to cast.
- Check account and location settings. Sign in to the correct provider account, disable accidental travel assumptions in your plan, and verify that the app has the required location permission where applicable.
- Compare the provider listing. If the ZIP guide shows a channel that your package lacks, contact the provider or use an eligible OTA signal; do not assume the NFL app can substitute for the affiliate.
- Verify before purchasing another service. Confirm the current matchup, package and device support on the provider’s own page.
Common symptoms and the likely explanation
| Symptom | Likely cause | Next check |
|---|---|---|
| A Sunday-afternoon game is missing from NFL+ | It is out-of-market or outside NFL+ live-video rights. | Use the ZIP guide; evaluate Sunday Ticket for an out-of-market game. |
| The app plays other content but will not cast the live game | Live NFL+ events have a phone/tablet-only restriction. | Watch on the supported mobile device or use the listed TV broadcaster. |
| Your neighbor sees a different game | The homes are in different local markets or use different provider lineups. | Run the guide separately for each ZIP code and provider. |
| Your package lists the network nationally but not locally | Local affiliate carriage differs by market. | Check the provider’s local lineup and OTA reception. |
| A game is unavailable while traveling | The viewing location changed the local rights result. | Use the temporary location in the ZIP guide and recheck device eligibility. |
| Preseason video is unavailable locally | Preseason games can have local and other geographic blackouts. | Check the current local listing and the applicable broadcaster. |
What not to assume
- A VPN is a guaranteed fix. Current official guidance establishes rights and location limits, not a reliable VPN workaround. Do not present one as a supported solution.
- NFL+ equals every NFL game. It does not provide live out-of-market Sunday-afternoon games.
- Sunday Ticket equals every broadcast. It targets out-of-market Sunday-afternoon games, while other windows retain their assigned rights holders.
- An antenna defeats a blackout. It can receive an available local OTA station only where the signal reaches your address.
- Successful casting of a replay proves live casting is supported. NFL+ applies a separate restriction to live local and primetime events.
- A historic sellout rule explains every current message. Today’s app and subscription restrictions are generally tied to rights, market, platform and device.
How to choose the least complicated legal option
| Your situation | Most relevant route | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Local Sunday-afternoon game and you have the affiliate | CBS or FOX through your TV provider or a suitable OTA antenna | Affiliate selection and reception vary by address. |
| Local or national live game and you can use a phone or tablet | NFL+, when the game appears in your ZIP-specific listing | Live access is rights-limited and cannot be cast to a TV. |
| Out-of-market Sunday-afternoon game | Sunday Ticket through YouTube or YouTube TV | It is separate from NFL+ and does not replace other national broadcasts. |
| Primetime or special national game | The broadcaster or platform named in the current NFL guide | Do not infer coverage from the Sunday-afternoon channel. |
| Live video unavailable | NFL+ live audio or, where eligible, a replay | Audio and replays do not remove live-video rights restrictions. |
Keep the decision current each week
Broadcast distributions, schedule assignments, device rules and package details can change by season or provider. The NFL’s Ways to Watch guide is the best first check for the week you intend to watch. Re-enter the ZIP code when traveling, confirm the provider lineup on game day, and verify package terms immediately before purchase. This process prevents the three most common mistakes: buying NFL+ for an out-of-market Sunday-afternoon game, buying Sunday Ticket for a game already local, and attempting to cast an NFL+ live event that is restricted to a phone or tablet.
