Short answer: You can lose T-Mobile promotional credits when a plan change, cancellation, upgrade, or early device payoff breaks the exact conditions of the offer. Before making any change, record each promotion, its qualifying line and equipment installment plan (EIP), read that promotion’s terms, and have T-Mobile confirm the proposed transaction on your account. Keeping your account with T-Mobile alone does not guarantee that credits continue.
Why T-Mobile credits can stop after an account change
T-Mobile promotions are not governed by one universal rule. Eligibility is specific to each offer, and the conditions can include a particular rate plan, an active line of service, a qualifying device EIP, an enrollment date, or restrictions on combining offers. T-Mobile’s promotional-offer FAQ says customers must meet the requirements of the individual promotion and keep required service active. Its support guidance warns that changing or canceling the required plan or service can disqualify a customer from continuing credits.

A device can remain on your T-Mobile account while its monthly discount ends. Conversely, some administrative changes do not affect eligibility under the general FAQ. A change of responsibility, account or phone number, warranty exchange, or an in-window remorse exchange is described as not affecting the offer when the account remains in good standing. That statement applies to the offer covered by that FAQ; it should not be treated as a guarantee for every promotion.

First identify what kind of credit you have
Separate your discounts before evaluating a change. T-Mobile commonly uses different conditions for service-related promotions and recurring device credits (RDC).
Service or line promotional credits
These credits depend on keeping a required line, service feature, or rate plan active. Canceling the line or removing the required service can end the credit. A lower-priced or otherwise different plan may also be ineligible even if the line remains open.
Recurring device credits (RDC)
RDCs reduce the monthly charge on a financed device. The qualifying EIP and line are usually part of the offer’s conditions. Closing either can stop the monthly credits. An upgrade or early payoff can also change the financing arrangement and trigger a separate rule.

Record the details before touching the account
Sign in to your T-Mobile account and make a list for every active promotion:
- Promotion name or identification number and the amount of the monthly or one-time benefit.
- The qualifying phone number or line.
- The device model and its EIP, including the remaining financed balance and credit months.
- The rate plan or service feature required by the offer.
- Enrollment date, start date, and remaining promotional period.
- Any combination restrictions or requirements for trade-in, port-in, or account standing.
Check the bill’s Equipment section for recurring device credits, then save a copy of the promotion terms. T-Mobile’s current promotional-offer details are at T-Mobile Promotional Offers. Terms and available offers can change, so use the terms attached to your own promotion rather than an old screenshot or a general plan page.

How different changes affect promotional credits
The table below summarizes the published guidance. “May stop” means the transaction can end eligibility; it is not a prediction for an unidentified promotion.
| Proposed action | What can happen | What to verify first |
|---|---|---|
| Change rate plan or required service | Credits may stop if the new plan does not satisfy the offer. | The exact required plan or feature and whether the proposed plan qualifies. |
| Cancel a line or service | Credits tied to the closed line or required service can end. | Whether the promotion requires that line to remain active and what happens to the device balance. |
| Upgrade a credited device | The old EIP and its device-promotion credits may end when the upgrade closes or replaces the financing. | Whether the old EIP will be paid, replaced, or kept, and whether remaining credits are forfeited. |
| Pay off an EIP early | The result depends on the promotion and enrollment date. Certain newer RDC enrollments forfeit remaining monthly credits. | The offer’s early-payoff clause and enrollment date. |
| Change responsibility, account, or phone number | The general FAQ says these changes do not affect the described offer when the account remains in good standing. | The specific offer’s terms and whether the transaction creates a new account or changes the qualifying line. |
| Warranty or in-window remorse exchange | The general FAQ describes these as not affecting eligibility for that offer. | Whether the exchange is within the permitted window and processed as the same qualifying transaction. |
Before changing your T-Mobile plan
1. Find the plan condition in the offer
Do not assume that any current T-Mobile plan is interchangeable with the plan you have now. Look for wording such as “qualifying rate plan,” a named plan family, a required data feature, or a minimum service level. Note whether the condition applies to the whole account or only to the line receiving the promotion.
2. Compare the proposed plan with that condition
Ask T-Mobile to check the promotion ID against the exact plan code you intend to select. A plan that appears similar in marketing descriptions can have different eligibility in the promotion system. If you are changing several lines, verify each affected promotion separately.
3. Ask for an account-specific answer before authorizing the change
Tell the representative the promotion name or ID, the affected phone number, the device EIP, and the exact new plan. Ask these questions:
- Will each listed service credit continue after this plan change?
- Will any recurring device credit stop, restart, or require a new promotion?
- Will the change create a prorated charge or credit?
- What will happen to the remaining device balance if eligibility ends?
- Can you provide the confirmation or interaction reference in writing?
Save the representative’s confirmation, the offer terms, and a screenshot of your current credits. A confirmation is useful for resolving a billing error, but the written promotion terms control eligibility.

4. Check the first bills after the change
T-Mobile says promotional credits can take up to two full bill cycles to begin. Its onboarding guidance also says equipment credits may not appear until the next bill, and a mid-cycle change can produce prorated charges and credits. Therefore, a missing credit on the first statement is not automatically proof that it was canceled. Compare the bill with the expected timing and contact support if the credit remains missing after the applicable window.
Upgrading a phone without sacrificing existing credits
An upgrade is more than a handset swap when the old phone is financed. It can close or replace the old EIP, and the promotion may be attached to that financing agreement.
Yearly Upgrade terms
T-Mobile’s Yearly Upgrade support guidance states that using the benefit ends current financing and device-promotion or deposit-reimbursement credits. That means an upgrade can remove the remaining credits on the phone you are replacing even if the new phone receives a separate offer.
The same guidance says that, for the cited Yearly Upgrade program, switching back to an eligible plan or data feature within 30 days can regain the Yearly Upgrade benefit. That 30-day provision concerns the upgrade benefit; it should not be read as restoring every device promotion that ended when the old financing was closed.
JUMP! and other upgrade paths
T-Mobile’s support material also lists a JUMP! upgrade from a device receiving credits among events that can disqualify those credits. The exact result depends on the offer and the transaction, so ask whether the old promotion survives before accepting an upgrade quote.

Use this upgrade checklist
- Write down the old phone’s EIP balance, monthly payment, credit amount, and remaining credit months.
- Identify whether the old phone is receiving RDC, a trade-in credit, a deposit reimbursement, or another benefit.
- Ask whether the proposed upgrade closes the old EIP, transfers it, or leaves it open.
- Ask specifically whether each remaining credit will continue after the old phone is upgraded.
- Get the answer tied to the promotion ID and line, not only a general statement that the account remains eligible.
- After the upgrade, inspect the next two full bill cycles and confirm both the old account entries and the new device charges.
If the old EIP is closed, the unpaid device balance may become due under the transaction’s terms. Do not authorize an upgrade until you understand both the new payment and the credits you are giving up.

Paying off a phone early is a separate decision from changing plans. T-Mobile’s promotional details say that customers enrolled in RDC on or after July 1, 2024 forfeit the remainder of their monthly RDC if they pay off the EIP early. For certain earlier enrollments, the stated rule is that the customer continues receiving the promised RDC as an account-level credit through the remaining promotional period, up to 24 or 36 months. The offer’s own terms and enrollment date determine which rule applies.
T-Mobile’s published wording is explicit: “Customers enrolling July 1, 2024 and later will forfeit the remainder of their monthly RDC if they choose to pay off their EIP early.” Read the complete terms at T-Mobile’s promotional offer details before making a payoff.
Calculate the trade-off
Compare the amount needed to pay off the EIP with the value of the remaining credits, but do not treat the arithmetic as proof that the credits are payable. If the offer says early payoff forfeits RDC, the remaining discount is not part of the payoff calculation. Ask T-Mobile to state the post-payoff monthly bill and the exact date the last credit will appear.
What changes are sometimes allowed?
Not every account change is disqualifying. Under the general promotional FAQ, a change of responsibility, account or phone number, warranty exchange, or in-window remorse exchange does not affect eligibility for the described offer when the account remains in good standing. These exceptions are useful, but they are not blanket protection.
Best Value
For example, moving a line to a different account may still alter the qualifying account, plan, or EIP. A warranty exchange may be treated differently from an upgrade or a trade-in. Confirm that the transaction is being processed under the exception in the offer terms and that the same qualifying line and financing relationship remain intact.
Billing delays, prorations, and missing credits
Promotional billing is not always immediate. T-Mobile says credits may take up to two full bill cycles to start. Its onboarding information notes that equipment credits may not apply until the next bill and that mid-cycle changes can create prorated charges and credits. Keep those timing rules separate from eligibility: a delayed credit can be normal, while a canceled credit reflects a qualification problem.
Use a bill-by-bill check
- Compare the bill date with the date the plan change, upgrade, or payoff was completed.
- Check the Equipment section for each device credit and the line-level service discounts.
- Look for prorated plan charges, one-time device adjustments, and the new recurring amount.
- Allow the stated posting window—up to two full bill cycles where applicable.
- If a credit is still absent, contact T-Mobile with the promotion ID, line, EIP, transaction date, and saved confirmation.
Do not cancel a disputed line or return a device while investigating unless T-Mobile tells you to do so; closing the line or EIP can itself end eligibility.
Questions to ask T-Mobile before you proceed
- What exact promotion ID is attached to this line and device?
- What plan, service feature, line status, and EIP must remain active?
- Does the proposed change preserve, end, or alter the service credit?
- Does the upgrade close the old EIP or remove remaining RDC?
- If I pay off the EIP, what does my enrollment date make happen to the remaining credits?
- Will the account show a prorated charge or credit, and in which bill cycle should the recurring credit appear?
- What is the interaction or order number for this confirmation?
For plan and benefit review, use your account tools or contact T-Mobile support. The relevant support pages are Promotional cards, credits, and rebates, Yearly Upgrade, T-Mobile Onboarding, and Forever Upgrade.
A safe decision process
- Inventory: list every service credit, device credit, qualifying line, EIP, and remaining term.
- Read: open the exact promotion terms and note plan, service, financing, combination, and timing requirements.
- Model: write down the proposed change and its effect on the line, EIP, device balance, and monthly bill.
- Confirm: have T-Mobile check the transaction against each promotion ID and provide a reference.
- Document: save the terms, current bill, confirmation, and order details.
- Audit: review the next bill and allow the stated posting window before escalating a missing credit.
This process is especially important when several promotions overlap. One plan change can preserve a service discount but end a device credit, or an upgrade can qualify for a new offer while terminating the old one. Treat every credit as a separate contract with its own conditions.
Bottom line for plan changes and upgrades
The only reliable way to know whether you will lose a T-Mobile promotional credit is to match the exact offer terms to the exact account action. Keep the qualifying line and EIP active unless the terms clearly allow otherwise, do not pay off a device before checking the enrollment-date rule, and ask T-Mobile to confirm an upgrade’s effect on the old financing and credits. Then verify the result on subsequent bills, allowing up to two full bill cycles and any stated proration.
