Binance can liquidate a futures position when its Mark Price reaches the liquidation threshold, even if the Last Price candle never touches the displayed level. Mark Price is calculated from funding data and a basket of spot-exchange prices, while Last Price is simply the latest transaction price. To reduce the risk, use less leverage and notional exposure, keep a substantial margin buffer, monitor maintenance-margin tiers and funding deductions, and act before your margin ratio reaches 100%. Binance recommends keeping the margin ratio below 80%.
Why a position can be liquidated without a matching candle wick
Binance uses two different prices in its futures system. Last Price is the latest price at which a trade occurred on Binance. Mark Price combines funding information with prices from a basket of spot exchanges. Binance uses Mark Price to calculate unrealized profit and loss and liquidation prices.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
That distinction matters during a fast move. A chart set to Last Price can show a low that remains above your displayed liquidation price, while the Mark Price has already crossed the trigger. In that situation, the liquidation engine is behaving according to the price it is designed to use, not the candle price you were watching.

| Price reference | What it represents | How Binance uses it in this context |
|---|---|---|
| Last Price | The latest transaction price on Binance | Useful for viewing executed trades and the traded-price candle, but it is not the liquidation trigger described here |
| Mark Price | A calculation combining funding data with a basket of spot-exchange prices | Used to calculate unrealized PnL and liquidation prices |
Binance’s own example illustrates the timing risk: if Mark Price moves from 17,000 to 17,100 USDT in one second, a position can be liquidated at the higher Mark Price. The liquidation event can therefore occur at a level different from the value you saw when you first checked the position.

What actually makes a position liquidation-eligible
Binance describes liquidation eligibility in terms of collateral and maintenance margin. Collateral consists of the position’s initial collateral together with realized and unrealized PnL. When that collateral falls below the required maintenance margin, the position becomes eligible for liquidation. Binance expresses the point at which the margin ratio reaches 100% as the liquidation condition.
Maintenance margin is not a single percentage for every position. For USDⓈ-M futures, Binance bases it on position notional, a maintenance-margin rate and a tier-specific maintenance amount. As your position grows, it can move into a higher maintenance-margin tier. That change can increase the maintenance requirement and alter the liquidation price even when the market has barely moved.
Binance recommends keeping the margin ratio below 80%, leaving room between normal fluctuations and the 100% liquidation condition. The 80% figure is Binance’s published guidance, updated in 2026; it is not a promise that a position is safe at any particular leverage or volatility level.
A practical plan for reducing liquidation risk
1. Reduce leverage and absolute exposure before opening
Leverage magnifies the effect of each price movement on the collateral supporting a position. Binance adjusts available leverage and risk limits according to absolute exposure: larger positions require more margin and have lower available leverage. A position that looks manageable when measured only by its leverage setting can become much more fragile as its notional value increases.
- Choose a smaller notional position before you increase leverage.
- Use the lower leverage available for larger exposure rather than treating the maximum shown in the interface as a target.
- Recalculate the displayed liquidation price after changing size, leverage or margin allocation.
Lowering leverage is not a guarantee against liquidation, because a sufficiently large Mark Price move can still exhaust the available collateral. It does, however, give ordinary adverse moves more room before the maintenance requirement is breached.
2. Select isolated margin when you need a defined loss boundary
Isolated margin assigns a specified amount of collateral to one position. A loss in that position is contained to the margin allocated to it, subject to the liquidation process. This makes isolated mode the more direct choice when you want a hard boundary around the collateral committed to a trade.

Cross margin allows positions to share collateral from the wallet. That can keep one position open longer, but it also means a correlated move in another position can consume account equity that you expected to support the first trade. Cross margin can therefore spread risk across the account rather than confining it to one position.
| Decision point | Isolated margin | Cross margin |
|---|---|---|
| Collateral scope | Margin allocated to the individual position | Collateral shared from the wallet across positions |
| Liquidation containment | Losses are generally confined to the position’s allocated margin | Account collateral can support the position, so more wallet equity is exposed |
| Effect of other positions’ PnL | Other positions do not supply the same shared collateral pool | Profit and loss elsewhere in the account can affect available equity |
| Correlated-move risk | Contained to the allocated position margin | A correlated move can consume shared margin more quickly |
After switching margin mode or changing the allocated margin, inspect the new displayed liquidation price. The value can change because the collateral scope has changed; do not rely on the number you saw before the adjustment.
3. Keep a buffer instead of trading at the displayed threshold
The liquidation price shown in the interface is a calculation at a particular moment, not a guaranteed execution price in a jump. Mark Price can move between interface updates, and a fast move can carry the position through the threshold before you can add collateral.
Use the displayed price as an alarm level, not as a target for how close you can safely trade. A practical buffer means reducing the position or adding margin while the margin ratio is comfortably below the liquidation condition. Binance’s published 80% recommendation provides a reference point for that buffer: once the ratio approaches that level, treat the position as requiring immediate risk reduction rather than waiting for a notification.
4. Check maintenance-margin tiers whenever size changes
USDⓈ-M futures use tiered maintenance margins. The requirement depends on position notional, the applicable rate and a maintenance amount associated with the tier. Increasing the position can move it into a higher tier, changing the maintenance requirement and the liquidation price.
- Record the position’s current notional value and displayed maintenance requirement.
- Increase size only after checking whether the new notional crosses into another risk tier.
- After the order fills, review the refreshed liquidation price and margin ratio.
- If the new tier leaves too little room, reduce the position rather than assuming the previous liquidation calculation still applies.
This tier effect is one reason a single fixed rule such as “keep X USDT per contract” cannot be applied to every Binance futures position. The required amount changes with notional and the tier assigned to it.

5. Account for funding deductions
Funding payments reduce the resources available to support a position. Binance notes that when the balance is insufficient, funding fees can be deducted from position margin and affect the liquidation price. A position that was comfortably buffered can therefore become more exposed after funding is charged.
- Check the funding information associated with the contract before holding through a payment.
- Recheck position margin and liquidation price after the deduction.
- Do not count the entire visible balance as a permanent buffer when funding can be taken from position margin.
6. Act before the trigger
Binance identifies two direct responses when liquidation risk rises: add more margin or reduce the position. Reducing or closing part of the position lowers notional exposure and can also move the position out of a higher maintenance tier. Adding margin increases the collateral supporting the existing exposure, but it does not reduce the size of the market risk.
Do not wait for a liquidation notification before deciding. Binance states that notification delivery is not guaranteed to arrive on time. An alert, when delivered, should be treated as an additional warning rather than a safety mechanism.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Open the active futures position and note Mark Price, margin ratio, position size and displayed liquidation price.
- If the ratio is rising toward the 80% warning range, add margin or reduce exposure immediately.
- After the change is confirmed, verify the updated liquidation price and margin ratio.
- If the market is moving too quickly to manage the position reliably, close more of the position instead of relying on a last-second adjustment.
7. Understand what can happen after liquidation begins
Liquidation is not always an ordinary close at the displayed liquidation price. If the liquidation creates a bankrupt position, Binance may transfer it to the Insurance Fund. If losses exceed the fund’s capacity, Auto-Deleveraging can affect traders on the opposing side of the market. Binance also notes that execution at a bankruptcy price can be less favorable than the displayed liquidation price.
These mechanisms are tail-risk controls, not ways to preserve a position. The useful prevention decision remains the same: reduce exposure or add margin before the account reaches the liquidation condition.
How much margin should you keep?
There is no single USDT amount that protects every Binance position. The required buffer changes with leverage, notional exposure, maintenance-margin tier, funding deductions, margin mode and the speed of Mark Price movement.

Use a process rather than a universal number:
- Keep the margin ratio below Binance’s published 80% upper-bound recommendation.
- Size the position so an adverse Mark Price move does not immediately consume the remaining collateral.
- Leave extra room when holding through funding deductions or when the position is close to a maintenance-margin tier boundary.
- Recalculate after every meaningful change to size, leverage, margin mode or collateral.
The objective is not to guess the exact next Mark Price. It is to ensure that a rapid move does not leave the position with only a narrow gap between its current state and the 100% liquidation condition.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Cross margin and isolated margin: choosing for the risk you actually have
Isolated margin is generally easier to reason about when you want one trade’s maximum planned collateral to be separate from the rest of the wallet. Cross margin can be useful when you intentionally want positions to draw on shared collateral, but the shared pool means that a loss in one position can weaken another before either position reaches the price you were watching.
Ask these questions before selecting a mode:
- Would losing the margin assigned to this one position be acceptable?
- Could another position move in the same direction and consume the wallet’s shared equity?
- Will you monitor all correlated positions closely enough to react before the account margin ratio rises sharply?
- Have you checked the displayed liquidation price after selecting the mode?
The correct choice depends on whether you prefer position-level containment or account-level collateral sharing. Neither mode removes the effect of a fast Mark Price move.

Standard futures risk is commonly viewed at the position level, with maintenance margin determined by the position’s notional and tier. Portfolio Margin evaluates the account using a broader measure: uniMMR, defined by Binance as unified adjusted equity divided by unified maintenance margin.
| Feature | Ordinary Futures | Portfolio Margin |
|---|---|---|
| Primary risk measure | Position maintenance margin and its liquidation calculation | Account-level uniMMR, based on unified adjusted equity and unified maintenance margin |
| Effect of correlations | Position requirements are applied through the futures risk tiers | Portfolio-level calculations can reflect relationships among positions |
| Documented margin-call level | Binance’s general guidance is to keep margin ratio below 80% | Binance documents a margin call at uniMMR less than or equal to 1.5 |
| Documented liquidation takeover level | Liquidation occurs when the relevant margin condition reaches its trigger | Binance documents account takeover for liquidation below uniMMR 1.05 |
The 1.5 and 1.05 uniMMR levels come from Binance’s documented Portfolio Margin example, updated in 2026. Account settings and rules can change, so verify the live values shown in your Binance interface before relying on them.

Check which price your chart displays
Confirm whether the chart and position panel are showing Last Price or Mark Price. A Last Price candle cannot disprove a liquidation based on Mark Price because the two values are calculated differently.

Review the position’s margin ratio and size
Look for changes in notional exposure, realized or unrealized PnL and the displayed maintenance requirement. A size increase can move the position into a higher tier and change its liquidation price without a dramatic candle move.
Look for funding deductions
If funding was deducted from position margin because the available balance was insufficient, the liquidation calculation may have moved closer even though the market chart looks similar.
Consider cross-margin effects
In cross mode, inspect other open positions and account equity. A correlated loss elsewhere can consume shared collateral and raise the account’s liquidation risk.

Reconstruct the timing
Fast Mark Price movement can occur between the values you observed. Binance’s 17,000-to-17,100 USDT one-second example demonstrates why the initial displayed liquidation price is not an execution guarantee.
Common mistakes that increase liquidation risk
- Watching only Last Price: The liquidation engine uses Mark Price for the calculations described above.
- Treating the displayed liquidation price as exact: A rapid Mark Price jump can move through the threshold before the interface or an alert catches up.
- Using maximum available leverage: Larger absolute exposure requires more margin and can reduce available leverage.
- Ignoring tier changes: A larger position can carry a higher maintenance requirement.
- Assuming cross margin is free protection: Shared collateral can expose the rest of the wallet to correlated losses.
- Leaving no funding allowance: Funding can be deducted from position margin when the balance is insufficient.
- Waiting for a notification: Binance does not guarantee that notifications arrive before liquidation.
A pre-trade and live-position checklist
Before opening
- Choose notional exposure first, then select conservative leverage.
- Check the maintenance-margin tier associated with the intended size.
- Select isolated margin if you need position-level collateral containment.
- Review the estimated liquidation price and leave a meaningful distance from the entry.
- Decide in advance how much margin you can add and how much of the position you would reduce.
While the position is open
- Watch Mark Price as well as Last Price.
- Track the margin ratio and treat 80% as Binance’s warning boundary, not a target.
- Recheck the position after funding deductions, size changes or margin-mode changes.
- In cross mode, include every correlated position when assessing available collateral.
- Act before liquidation by adding margin or reducing exposure.
After an adjustment
- Confirm that the order or margin transfer completed.
- Read the refreshed liquidation price, maintenance requirement and margin ratio.
- Ensure the new position size has not moved into an unintended maintenance tier.
The limits of alerts and protective orders
Binance does not guarantee that liquidation alerts arrive before the trigger. A fast Mark Price move can also pass through a level before a manual action is completed. For that reason, alerts and stop orders should not be described as guaranteed liquidation prevention. The durable controls are lower leverage, smaller notional exposure, an appropriate margin mode and enough collateral buffer to absorb a rapid move.
Bottom line for fast Mark Price moves
Liquidation is based on Binance’s Mark Price and maintenance-margin calculations, not necessarily on the Last Price candle. Keep the margin ratio below Binance’s 80% recommendation, use less leverage and smaller positions, understand your maintenance tier, account for funding deductions, and choose isolated or cross margin deliberately. If the ratio is rising, add margin or reduce the position before the trigger; do not wait for a notification or assume the displayed liquidation price will remain fixed during a jump.
