Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteThe most reliable way to avoid impulse purchases during Amazon Prime Day is to decide what you can spend and what you actually need before opening deal pages. Set one event-wide ceiling that includes delivery, write a short product list with must-have features and maximum prices, and treat every unlisted deal as a decision to postpone rather than an automatic bargain.
Amazon’s 2026 Prime Day ran June 23–26, 2026. Those dates are historical; Amazon has not announced a subsequent event date in the information available here. The same preparation can be used for a future sale, even if the app’s alerts, labels or other features change.

Why Prime Day deals can turn into unplanned spending
A large sale puts many products, prices and time-sensitive messages in front of you at once. A discount badge can make an item feel urgent before you have decided whether it solves a real problem. That feeling is not proof that the product is useful or that the offer is the best value available.
The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) advises shoppers to set a budget, identify priorities, compare products and account for delivery costs. It also recommends reading the full terms and checking return rules, particularly when merchandise is marked as a sale. Applying those checks before payment turns a fast-moving promotion into a normal purchase decision.

As the FTC puts it in its holiday-shopping advice: “Those impulse purchases (looking at you, cozy sweater) are less tempting when you have a game plan.” The plan below is designed for a major online event, but it works for any promotion that makes browsing feel urgent.
Set the spending ceiling before you browse
Choose one total amount for the whole event
Write down the maximum amount you are willing to spend across all Prime Day orders. Treat that figure as a ceiling, not as a target to reach. Include shipping, delivery charges and any other unavoidable cost in the same amount. If an item’s final total would push the event above the ceiling, it does not fit the plan unless you remove or defer another planned purchase.
Keep the ceiling separate from your normal household budget. Money reserved for rent, utilities, debt payments, food, medication or other essentials should not be counted as sale spending. A deal is not a saving if paying for it creates a shortfall elsewhere.
Make the limit visible
Put the ceiling in the note, spreadsheet or paper list you will use while shopping. Record each committed order as soon as it is placed, using the amount that will actually be charged rather than the pre-discount list price. Seeing the remaining balance prevents a series of small add-ons from becoming an unplanned total.
Decide what happens when the ceiling is reached
Choose the rule before browsing: stop ordering, or replace a lower-priority item with a higher-priority one. Do not create extra money because a new offer appears. A preselected rule removes the need to negotiate with yourself while a promotion is in front of you.
Turn needs into a short shopping list
Start with problems that already exist
List purchases that solve a known need, replace something that is no longer adequate, or complete a project you have already planned. A product that becomes interesting only after you see its promotion belongs outside the initial list. You can reconsider it later, but it should not receive the same automatic priority as an item you identified in advance.
Set a maximum acceptable price for each item
For every planned purchase, write the highest total you are prepared to pay, including delivery. This is different from copying the event’s advertised price. The maximum should reflect what the item is worth to you and the amount available under your event ceiling.

Separate must-have features from nice-to-have features
Record the functions the product must provide and a second, shorter list of desirable extras. Use the must-have list as a pass-or-fail test. An attractive color, accessory or upgraded specification cannot compensate for a missing requirement. Nice-to-have features matter only after the product meets the essential criteria and remains within the price limit.
Rank the list
Mark each item as essential, useful but deferrable, or optional. Ranking gives you a clear answer when two offers compete for the same remaining budget. It also prevents a low-priority item with a dramatic discount label from displacing a higher-priority purchase.
Create an unlisted-item rule
Decide how you will handle a product that was not on your list before browsing. A practical rule is to leave it out of the cart, record its name and price, and return to the budget and feature list after the initial browsing session. Ask whether it solves an existing need, whether you would have sought it without the promotion, and what planned purchase would be removed to pay for it.
This pause is a decision aid, not a guarantee that you will never buy an unplanned item. Its purpose is to prevent the promotion itself from becoming the reason for ownership. If the product still fits the written criteria and the total ceiling after reconsideration, you can make a deliberate choice; if not, close the page without treating the discount as a loss.

Compare the offer, not just the percentage off
Check other products and sellers
Compare the candidate with similar products and with offers from other sellers. Look at the features you marked as essential, the product’s condition, the complete price and the promised delivery terms. A lower displayed price can be less useful if it omits a required accessory, has different condition information or arrives too late for the reason you need it.
Read the full description and deal conditions
Read beyond the headline and discount badge. Check whether the promotion requires buying additional products, meeting a quantity condition or selecting a particular configuration. Confirm what is included in the box and whether the item is new, refurbished or otherwise not in the condition you expected.
Verify delivery promises
Record the delivery promise shown for your address and include any delivery charge in your calculation. If timing matters, compare the promised date with the date you actually need the item. A cheaper offer that arrives after the project, trip or replacement deadline may not be a useful bargain.

Check the seller
Review who is selling the item and what the seller promises about fulfillment and returns. Keep the seller’s identity with your order records. The same product name can appear in offers with different sellers, conditions or policies, so do not assume that a familiar listing title means identical terms.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Check return rules before you commit
Find the return period before payment, not after a package arrives. Note who pays return shipping, whether fees apply and whether the sale designation changes the normal policy. The FTC specifically advises checking return rules for sale merchandise because promotional terms can differ.
Read any condition requirements for a return, such as packaging or included components, and save the policy as it appears when you order. If the return window is too short for you to evaluate the item or the shipping cost makes a mistake expensive, treat that risk as part of the price.
Use alerts only for products already on your list
Amazon’s announcement for the 2026 event described deal alerts and a target-price feature for specific items. These tools can be useful when they monitor a product you have already chosen, with a written maximum price and required features. They can also expose you to more offers than you intended to consider.
For a future event, attach notifications only to listed items. Do not turn every interesting recommendation into another alert. Feature names, eligibility and behavior may change, so check the current Amazon settings and description when the next event is announced rather than assuming the 2026 implementation remains identical.

Set a notification boundary
Before enabling an alert, write the item’s name, acceptable condition and maximum total. When an alert arrives, compare the actual offer with those notes. An alert is information about a planned purchase; it is not an instruction to buy.
Apply a five-question checkout gate
Pause at the final review screen and answer each question in order. If any answer is unclear, leave checkout and verify the missing information.

- Was this on my list before I saw the promotion? If not, apply your unlisted-item rule rather than treating the cart as proof of need.
- Does the complete cost fit the event ceiling, including delivery? Use the amount you will actually pay, not the crossed-out reference price.
- Does it have every must-have feature? Check the product description and selected configuration, not only the image or title.
- Have I checked the seller, product condition, deal conditions and delivery promise? Confirm whether additional purchases are required and whether the item is new or refurbished.
- Have I checked the return window, shipping responsibility and fees? Sale terms can differ, so confirm them for this exact offer.
The first three questions implement the FTC’s planning and comparison advice. The final two apply its guidance to read deal terms and review return policies.
Keep an order record immediately after purchase
The FTC recommends retaining records of what you ordered, when you ordered it, what it cost and the return terms. Add the seller, delivery promise and product condition to the same record so you can identify the exact offer later.
A simple record can contain these fields:
- Product name, model or configuration
- Seller and fulfillment information
- Order date
- Amount charged, including delivery
- Promised delivery date
- Return deadline
- Who pays return shipping and any stated fees
- Link or saved copy of the order and return-policy pages
Keep the confirmation and policy information until the return period has ended and the product is working as expected. If you discover a problem, the record gives you the order date, seller and applicable terms without relying on memory.

“The discount is too good to miss”
Replace the question “How much am I saving?” with “Would I buy this at my maximum acceptable total if there were no countdown or badge?” Compare the product, condition, seller and terms with alternatives. A discount is one input; it is not evidence by itself that the purchase is good value.
“It is inexpensive, so it does not matter”
Small items can consume the event ceiling when several are added. Record every order, including low-cost accessories and add-ons. If an item is not on the list, it still has to pass the same need, feature and budget checks.
“The cart is already open”
A cart is a holding area, not a commitment or a reason to continue shopping. Remove items that fail the list or return-policy checks before proceeding. Recalculate the remaining ceiling after every order.

“The promotion requires another purchase”
Read the condition carefully. If the extra product was not already planned, include its complete cost and return implications. Do not buy an unwanted item merely to unlock a lower price on something else; compare the combined total with a straightforward offer for the product you need.

“The item may sell out”
Scarcity language does not replace your criteria. If you cannot verify the seller, condition, delivery promise or return terms before the offer ends, accepting uncertainty is a purchase decision. Keep the written checklist as the standard even when the page encourages speed.
“I can decide after it arrives”
That approach exposes you to return shipping, fees and a limited return window. Check those terms before ordering and save them. If the policy makes an uncertain purchase costly to undo, do not treat a later return as a free trial.
A practical browsing sequence for a future event
- Prepare offline: write the event ceiling, list, maximum totals, must-have features and priority ranking.
- Open only relevant pages: begin with products on the list rather than general deal feeds.
- Collect comparable information: note the complete price, seller, condition, included items, delivery promise and return terms for each candidate.
- Eliminate failures: remove offers that miss a must-have feature, exceed the maximum total, require unwanted add-ons or have unacceptable return conditions.
- Choose the best fit: among the remaining offers, select the one that meets the need with the clearest terms and acceptable delivery.
- Run the checkout gate: answer all five questions before payment.
- Update the budget record: subtract the amount actually charged and reassess the remaining list before opening another deal page.
- Save the order information: retain the confirmation and policy details using the record fields above.
Example: evaluating a tempting unlisted offer
Imagine your list contains a replacement device with a required compatibility feature and a maximum total. While browsing, you see a heavily discounted accessory that was not planned. First, leave it out of the cart and record its complete price. Next, ask whether you already have a specific use for it, whether it meets any requirement on your list and what planned purchase would be displaced if you bought it.
Then inspect the accessory’s seller, condition, delivery promise and return terms. If it does not solve an existing need, or if adding it would push the event above the ceiling, the correct outcome is to skip it. If it does solve a documented need and fits after the other checks, you can add it as a conscious change to the plan rather than an automatic response to the promotion.
What the available guidance can—and cannot—tell you
FTC guidance provides practical steps: budget before shopping, identify priorities, compare products, read full terms, check sale-item returns and keep order records. Amazon’s 2026 announcement supplies the historical event dates and describes deal alerts and a target-price feature for specific items.
No named statistic in those official materials measures how often shoppers make impulse purchases during Prime Day or proves a particular success rate for budgeting techniques. Use the checklist as a disciplined decision process, not as a claim that any method guarantees perfect restraint.
Prepare for the next announcement without assuming its details
Prime Day dates, eligibility rules, alert tools and target-price behavior are event-specific and can change. The 2026 event’s June 23–26 dates should be treated as a past example, not a forecast. When Amazon announces another event, verify the current dates and feature descriptions, then reuse your budget, list, comparison and recordkeeping process.
The durable part of the method is independent of the sale calendar: decide what you need, what it may cost in total and which terms you will accept before a promotion asks you to decide quickly.
Quick Recap
Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
