How to Avoid Greenwashing When Comparing Sustainable Products

The safest way to compare “sustainable” products is to ignore the broad label and audit the specific claim behind it. Write down what is claimed, how much of the product it covers, which life-cycle stage is measured, what the comparison baseline is, and what evidence supports it. Then compare products that perform the same function using the same boundary, metric and time period.

A green-looking package or certification logo is not proof of lower environmental impact. A credible comparison may conclude that neither product has enough comparable data, or that each is better on a different metric. That is a more reliable result than declaring an overall winner from vague language.

What greenwashing looks like in a product comparison

Greenwashing is environmental marketing that creates a broader or more favorable impression than the available evidence supports. The problem is often not an outright false number; it is an omitted boundary, an unclear baseline or a prominent benefit that hides a material drawback.

The U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) warned in its 2012 Green Guides that marketers should not make broad, unqualified environmental-benefit claims such as “green” or “eco-friendly.” Such words imply benefits across a product’s life cycle, which are difficult to substantiate. The Guides also do not give specific guidance for the words “sustainable,” “natural” or “organic,” so those terms should not be treated as regulated proof of a particular impact.

A claim can be technically true and still misleading if it applies only to packaging while the shopper assumes it describes the product, or if it highlights recycled content while ignoring a shorter service life. FTC guidance says a qualified general claim can mislead when the promoted attribute’s environmental costs outweigh its benefits.

Turn every broad claim into five checkable facts

Before comparing products, rewrite each marketing statement as a record with five fields. This prevents a slogan from becoming an untestable overall judgment.

  1. Exact claim. Copy the wording, including quantities and qualifiers. “Made with 60% post-consumer recycled plastic” is materially different from “made with recycled materials.”
  2. Scope. Identify whether the claim covers the whole product, a component, or the package. FTC consumer advice specifically tells shoppers to check this distinction and to look for the amount claimed.
  3. Life-cycle stage. Mark whether the evidence concerns raw materials, manufacturing, transport, the use phase, maintenance, or disposal. A factory powered by renewable electricity says little about energy used by the product in a household unless that use is measured too.
  4. Baseline and context. For a word such as “less,” “better” or “reduced,” find the reference product or previous design, the geography and the time period. A reduction against one older model is not automatically a reduction against every alternative.
  5. Evidence. Record the test method, life-cycle assessment, laboratory result, audit or certification. Note who performed it, the publication date and any assumptions about use or disposal.

If one of these fields is missing, narrow the conclusion to what is actually established. For example, “the package contains 60% post-consumer recycled plastic” is supportable when the percentage and scope are documented; “the product is sustainable” is not.

A step-by-step process for comparing two products

1. Define the job the products must perform

Start with function, not material. A refillable water bottle, a single-use bottle and a filter jug are not automatically comparable because they may provide different capacities, lifetimes and filtration performance. State the use scenario: for example, supplying one litre of drinking water per day for a specified number of years.

2. Choose one functional unit

A functional unit is the common service against which impacts are compared. Depending on the category, it might be “100 washes,” “one thousand hours of lighting” or “one litre delivered.” Without it, a lightweight item that fails sooner can appear better than a heavier item that lasts much longer.

3. Set the life-cycle boundary

Decide whether the comparison covers cradle-to-gate (materials through factory exit), transport, customer use and maintenance, or end-of-life as well. Use the same boundary for both products whenever possible. If one seller reports only manufacturing impacts and the other includes use and disposal, label the comparison incomplete rather than ranking them.

4. Match the metric to the question

Choose the environmental measure that matters for the decision: greenhouse-gas emissions, water consumption, energy demand, material extraction, waste or another quantified indicator. Do not combine unrelated metrics into an invented single score. A product can have lower carbon emissions but higher water use, or less packaging but a shorter life.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. Verify performance and expected life

Check capacity, durability, warranty, repair options, replacement parts and expected maintenance. Ask whether the environmental result changes if one item must be replaced twice during the period in which the other remains usable. Performance evidence must be comparable; a laboratory result for one operating condition cannot automatically represent another.

6. Record uncertainty and missing data

Write down assumptions about electricity grids, transport distances, washing temperature, user behavior and disposal. Missing information is not evidence of a low impact. Keep “not reported” separate from “zero,” and do not infer an overall winner when a material stage is absent.

Claims that require extra scrutiny

Recycled content

Look for the percentage and the type of recycled feedstock. “Post-consumer” means material recovered after consumer use; manufacturing scrap is a different category. Confirm whether the percentage applies to the entire product, a named part or only the package. A statement that omits both quantity and scope cannot support a meaningful comparison.

Renewable materials

The seller should name the material and explain why it is considered renewable. Renewable does not automatically mean recyclable, biodegradable or low-impact. Cultivation, processing, land use, additives and end-of-life conditions can change the result. Treat “plant-based” as a description of feedstock, not as a complete environmental assessment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Non-toxic or safer chemistry

“Non-toxic” needs evidence and a defined exposure context. Human-health safety and environmental toxicity are separate questions, and a product may be assessed for one without the other. Prefer a statement that identifies the substances tested, the test method and the limitation of the conclusion.

Renewable-energy claims

Check the energy source, such as wind or solar, and the part of the operation covered. Electricity purchased for one facility does not prove that every manufacturing process, supplier or transport step is renewable. Ask whether the claim concerns a site, a product line or the company as a whole, and for which period.

“Carbon neutral” or “reduced” language

Find the baseline, accounting boundary, date and treatment of offsets or renewable-energy certificates. A reduction claim without a reference year and measured scope cannot show how much changed. If the claim depends on an instrument rather than a physical process change, that distinction should be explicit.

  • Who sets the criteria? Identify the governing organization and whether its standards are publicly available.
  • Which impacts are covered? Some schemes assess one attribute, such as forestry or energy, rather than the full product life cycle.
  • How is compliance checked? Look for independent audits, testing frequency, chain-of-custody controls and rules for nonconforming products.
  • How is the scheme governed? Check decision-making, stakeholder participation and updates to the criteria.
  • Are there material connections? Find out whether the certifier is financially or organizationally connected to the company making the claim.

The FTC’s consumer guidance states that seals and certificates can be useful only when they are backed by solid standards. The OECD has likewise reported that unreliable certification schemes make it difficult to distinguish trustworthy labels from invented ones.

The European Commission describes the EU Ecolabel as an official voluntary label for environmental excellence. Its existence does not mean every product with a green symbol meets the same standard; verify that the exact product category, version and eligibility criteria apply. Credible, verifiable claims are necessary to restore consumer trust.

Why quantified declarations are especially useful

When available, an ISO 14025 Type III environmental declaration provides quantified life-cycle information for products serving the same function. The OECD describes these declarations as a way to enable comparisons using measured indicators rather than an unsupported overall “sustainable” badge. They still require careful reading: compare the same functional unit, product category rules, boundary, geography and declaration date.

Use a comparison table instead of a green score

A worksheet makes differences visible without pretending that unrelated impacts can be reduced to one number. Use one row for each item below and fill it from the seller’s documentation or an independent declaration.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Comparison item What to record Why it matters
Function Service delivered, capacity and use scenario Prevents unlike products from being compared as substitutes
Functional unit For example, one hundred uses or one litre delivered Accounts for different lifetimes and performance
Life-cycle boundary Materials, factory, transport, use, maintenance and disposal included Reveals when one result covers less of the life cycle
Primary metric Carbon, water, energy, waste or another stated indicator Shows what “better” actually means
Material claim Percentage, feedstock type and affected component Separates post-consumer content from scrap and packaging-only claims
Evidence quality Test method, LCA, declaration, audit and date Distinguishes quantified evidence from marketing language
Durability and repair Expected life, warranty, parts and repair instructions A shorter-lived product may erase a material advantage
Use phase Energy, water, consumables and maintenance per functional unit Important when operation dominates impacts
End of life Collection, recycling or disposal assumptions for the relevant geography Shows whether the advertised outcome is realistically available
Uncertainty Missing data, estimates and sensitivity to assumptions Prevents false precision and unsupported rankings

A hypothetical example of spotting a misleading comparison

Imagine two kitchen containers. Product A says, “Made with 60% post-consumer recycled plastic,” and its documentation specifies that the percentage applies to the container body. Product B says, “Made with recycled materials,” but does not state the percentage, feedstock or whether the claim concerns the lid and packaging. You can verify a narrower attribute for Product A, but you cannot conclude that it has the lower total impact.

Next compare the service delivered. If Product A’s material claim covers a container that lasts one year and Product B’s quantified test shows five years of use, the recycled-content advantage may not decide the result. You would need comparable durability, replacement and use-phase data. If Product A reports cradle-to-gate carbon and Product B reports a full life cycle, the figures are not directly rankable until the boundaries are aligned.

This example illustrates the correct conclusion: Product A has the clearer recycled-content claim; the overall environmental winner is undetermined from the available information.

Trade-offs to check before calling a product better

  • Material versus longevity: A lower-impact material can be a poor choice if it wears out quickly or cannot withstand the intended task.
  • Manufacturing versus use: A product with higher embodied impacts may use less electricity or water during years of operation.
  • Packaging versus product: A minimal package does not offset a resource-intensive product, and a package claim should not be presented as a product-wide benefit.
  • Recyclability versus actual collection: A technically recyclable material may have no collection route in the buyer’s area.
  • Renewable feedstock versus land and processing impacts: Bio-based inputs can involve cultivation, processing or land-use burdens that the headline claim omits.
  • One metric versus another: Lower greenhouse-gas emissions do not prove lower water use, toxicity or waste.

Describe these as separate findings. Do not average them into a personal “eco score” unless a transparent, independently justified method defines the weighting and data quality.

What to do when evidence is incomplete

Use a three-level conclusion:

  1. Verified attribute: State the specific fact supported by a test, declaration or certification, including scope and date.
  2. Probable but limited comparison: Explain which metric or life-cycle stage appears favorable and what remains outside the evidence.
  3. No defensible ranking: Say that the products cannot be fairly ranked because functional units, boundaries or performance data differ.

Do not reward silence. A seller that provides no baseline, no quantity and no method has supplied less usable evidence, not proof of a low-impact product. Keep screenshots or documents with the claim wording and date so that a changed label does not silently change your conclusion.

A quick checklist for shoppers and writers

  1. Replace “green,” “eco-friendly” or “sustainable” with a named attribute and quantity.
  2. Confirm whether the claim applies to the product, a component or its package.
  3. Find the baseline for every “less,” “better” or “reduced” statement.
  4. Match the life-cycle boundary, geography, date and functional performance.
  5. Inspect a label’s criteria, audit method, governance and material connections.
  6. Prefer quantified life-cycle information, including an ISO 14025 Type III declaration when one is available.
  7. Record trade-offs, assumptions and missing data instead of inferring an overall winner.

The result should read like an evidence table, not a color-coded badge: this product has a documented advantage on a defined metric under a stated scenario, while other impacts remain unknown or may move in the opposite direction.
