To reduce the chance of a Tumblr flag, label mature material accurately, use relevant tags, avoid deceptive or repetitive promotion, and represent yourself honestly. No practice guarantees that a post or blog will avoid review. If Tumblr flags something, use the review or appeal route for that specific action rather than reposting the content or replying to a notice.
What a Tumblr flag means
A flag is a moderation classification or review event, not proof by itself that a report is valid or that your account will be suspended. Tumblr says it checks reports against its rules and does not remove content solely because it is offensive. Its moderation combines machine-learning classification with review by trained human moderators. See Tumblr’s explanation of content moderation and its guidance on reporting content.

How to reduce avoidable flags
Label mature material accurately
Tumblr gives nudity, sexual themes, strong language, and mature subject matter as examples of content that may need a Content Label. The creator is responsible for labeling mature posts. A label is not permission to publish prohibited material: Tumblr disallows visual depictions of sexually explicit acts and content with an overt focus on genitalia. Check Tumblr’s mature-content guidance when deciding how to label a post.

Keep tags relevant
Use tags that describe the post, and avoid misleading or unrelated tags intended to attract attention. Tumblr’s official German-language User Guidelines warn against misleading tags and overloading posts with irrelevant ones. The available guidance does not establish a universal tag-count threshold, so focus on relevance rather than an assumed maximum.

Avoid deceptive or repetitive promotion
Do not flood replies, messages, or communities with substantially repeated promotional copy, misleading links, or posts designed mainly to generate revenue or traffic. Tumblr’s community guidance distinguishes malicious, deceptive spam from merely having a couple of similar posts; similarity alone does not necessarily justify escalation. It specifically identifies community posts whose primary purpose is affiliate marketing as malicious spam. Read Tumblr’s community-moderation guidance.
Be clear about who you are and what you are posting
Do not impersonate another person or use intentionally misleading identity details. Make parody clear, and avoid names or URLs that could confuse people about who runs a blog. The accessible policy detail for this point is on Tumblr’s official German-language User Guidelines page, last changed May 13, 2025; consult the current English guidelines for the exact wording applicable to your account.
Use affiliate links as a secondary part of useful content
Tumblr’s affiliate-link guidance says creators may use their own affiliate links, but a blog should not have affiliate marketing as its primary purpose. Tumblr may also add its affiliate code to links to participating merchants if the feature is enabled and the user has not used their own affiliate code. Tumblr says it does not currently share revenue from its own link monetization with creators, and that affiliate links do not affect search or recommendations. Keep any affiliate link relevant, transparent, and secondary to original, useful content; see Tumblr’s affiliate-link guidance.
Choose the right response to a flag
Tumblr has different routes for a flagged post, a blog marked Mature, and removed content or a suspended account. A report you submit about someone else’s content is a separate process again.
| Situation | What to do | Key limit |
|---|---|---|
| Mature material needs a label | Add the appropriate Content Label. If Tumblr applied a Mature label to your blog by mistake, use the designated support request. | Labeling does not make prohibited sexually explicit content permissible. |
| Your post is flagged as sexually explicit | Request a review from “Review flagged posts” in the affected blog’s settings. | Only the original poster can appeal; reblogs are not appealable by the reblogger. A post already reviewed by an expert cannot be appealed again. |
| Your blog is marked Mature | Contact Tumblr Support and select “My blog was incorrectly marked as explicit or mature.” | Mature status is not the same as suspension or account termination. |
| Content is removed or your account or blog is suspended | Use the support appeal route and explain briefly why the decision is mistaken. | Do not reply to the original notice; Tumblr says those replies do not reach the appeals team. Appeals may be submitted up to six months after the initial decision. |
| You want to report someone else’s content | Use the report flow for the relevant post, blog, message, or community, and provide requested URLs or context. | A report is not a final finding and does not guarantee removal. |
Appeal an explicitly flagged post
Use this route when Tumblr has flagged your own post as explicit and you believe the classification is wrong. The official instructions are in Tumblr’s guide to appealing content flagged as explicit.
- Open the flagged-post list. On desktop, open the Account tab, select the affected blog, then choose “Review flagged posts.” In the mobile app, open the account tab, tap the settings gear, then tap “Review flagged posts.” Interface wording may vary across app versions.
- Select the relevant post. Choose “Appeal” or “Review” if you believe the flag is mistaken, and check the list for status updates.
- Use the result to decide what to do next. If the post violates Tumblr’s rules, edit or delete it rather than requesting a misclassification review. If an expert has already reviewed the post, Tumblr does not offer another appeal through this route.
A flagged reblog may appear in the list, but the reblogger cannot appeal it; the original poster is the person who may appeal.

If your blog was marked Mature by mistake
Tumblr says a blog may be automatically classified as Mature when it shares mature material without appropriate Content Labels. If the label is wrong, use Tumblr Support and choose “My blog was incorrectly marked as explicit or mature.” Briefly explain the issue, select the affected blog, and confirm the email address associated with your account. A Mature classification can affect visibility for users under 18 and may blur blog imagery; it does not by itself mean the blog has been removed.

Check the moderation notice and the email address associated with your account, then use the support appeal route if you believe the decision was mistaken and the content does not violate Tumblr’s User Guidelines or Terms. Tumblr says appeals are reviewed by humans and can be submitted up to six months after the initial moderation decision. That is the submission deadline, not a promised response time or indication that an appeal will succeed. Explain the relevant facts and rule connection concisely. Do not reply to the original removal notice as a substitute for filing an appeal; see Tumblr’s appeal instructions.
Reporting someone else’s post is different
If you are reporting another person’s post, blog, message, or community, use the relevant report option rather than an appeal form. For spam, follow Tumblr’s spam-reporting instructions. Tumblr reviews reports against its rules; reporting does not automatically establish a violation or ensure removal.
Quick Recap
What to do while a review is pending
- Do not repeatedly repost the disputed content or use another account to evade the decision.
- Provide relevant context once through the official route for the action.
- Keep your account email current so you can receive moderation and appeal communications.
- If the content violates Tumblr’s rules, remove or edit it instead of appealing on the basis that a label will make it acceptable.
