How to Avoid a Credit Card Charge-Off When You’re Behind on Payments

Call your card issuer today, before the account reaches charge-off. Explain why the minimum payment is unaffordable, state the largest amount you can reliably pay, say when you expect normal payments to resume, and request a specific temporary change. Ask for every term in writing and make each payment under the agreement. A charge-off is generally associated with about 180 days of delinquency, but issuers’ procedures and limited exceptions vary, so waiting for a warning letter is risky.

What a charge-off is—and why the calendar matters

A charge-off is an accounting treatment for a seriously delinquent credit-card account. It does not cancel the balance, transfer ownership automatically, or stop later collection. The creditor may continue collecting itself, place the account with a collection agency, or sell the debt, depending on its policies and applicable law.

The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) reported in its 2023 Consumer Credit Card Market Report that card accounts are generally charged off when they reach 180 days of delinquency, consistent with Office of the Comptroller of the Currency guidance. A 2017 CFPB report described the same general rule, with limited exceptions. Treat 180 days as a regulatory benchmark, not a guaranteed deadline for every issuer: internal procedures, payments that bring an account current, bankruptcy, military protections, and other circumstances can affect what happens.

Every missed payment can also add late fees, interest, credit-report damage, and collection pressure before a charge-off occurs. The practical objective is therefore to make an affordable arrangement with the issuer as soon as you know the minimum payment is not sustainable.

Your first 24 hours: a precise plan

  1. Calculate a sustainable payment. Add take-home income and essential expenses such as housing, utilities, food, transportation, insurance, medication, taxes, and child care. The remainder is not automatically available for the card: leave room for irregular necessities and minimum payments on other accounts. Choose an amount you can pay every agreed due date without sacrificing essentials.
  2. Call the issuer’s hardship or payment-assistance department. Use the customer-service number on the card or statement. Say that you are experiencing a financial hardship, the minimum payment is unaffordable, you can pay a specific amount, and you expect normal payments to resume on a specific date or after a defined event.
  3. Request a defined concession. Ask what temporary lower-payment, fee-waiver, interest-rate-reduction, due-date change, or other hardship program is available. Do not ask only for “help”; ask for the exact payment and duration you need.
  4. Clarify consequences before accepting. Ask whether the account will be closed or frozen, whether interest and fees continue, how payments are allocated, how the arrangement will be reported to credit bureaus, what happens if you pay early or miss a payment, and what the payment becomes when the arrangement ends.
  5. Obtain written terms. Request a letter, secure-message copy, or email stating the payment amount, due dates, start and end dates, interest and fee treatment, reporting treatment, and default consequences. Save the representative’s name, call date, confirmation number, and every document.
  6. Automate and monitor. Set reminders or an affordable automatic payment, review each statement, and contact the issuer before a payment fails. An agreement is useful only while its payments are made as promised.

The CFPB’s consumer guidance, reviewed September 2, 2026, puts the urgency plainly: “If you can’t pay your credit card bill, it’s important to act right away. Contact your credit card company immediately.”

What to say on the phone

A short, factual script keeps the conversation focused:

“I’m having a temporary financial hardship because of [brief reason]. My required minimum payment is not affordable. After essential expenses, I can pay $___ per month beginning ___. I expect my regular income or expenses to normalize around ___. What hardship programs can reduce the payment, fees, or interest for that period? Please explain how the account and credit reporting will be handled, and send the terms in writing.”

Be accurate rather than dramatic. Do not promise a payment you can meet only once, and do not conceal another impending bill. If the first representative cannot help, ask for a supervisor or the dedicated hardship team, record the date, and try again before the next due date.

Questions to get answered before enrolling

  • Is the account closed, suspended, or still usable?
  • Does interest continue, and at what rate? Are late fees or over-limit fees waived?
  • What exact amount is due, on which dates, and for how many cycles?
  • Will the issuer report the account as current, delinquent, in a special arrangement, or otherwise? When will reporting change?
  • What event ends the arrangement, and what payment or interest rate follows?
  • What happens after one late or returned payment? Can the arrangement be reinstated?
  • Are payments applied first to fees, interest, or principal?
  • Will automatic payments, recurring subscriptions, or authorized users be affected by a closure?

If a representative makes a verbal promise that is absent from the written notice, ask for correction before relying on it. Keep statements from before, during, and after the plan so you can compare the agreed terms with what was posted.

Compare the main ways to prevent a charge-off

The right choice depends on whether you can still make some payments, how many accounts are affected, and whether you need a structured repayment plan. The following distinctions help you ask informed questions; actual rates, fees, eligibility, and reporting depend on the provider and your agreement.

Option Do payments continue? Fees and interest Account status Credit and lawsuit risk Who controls money If it fails
Issuer hardship plan Yes, at the reduced or modified amount stated in writing. The issuer may reduce interest or waive fees; exact concessions must be confirmed. The account may be closed or restricted; ask before enrolling. Reporting treatment varies by arrangement. Preventing further delinquency generally reduces escalation risk, but no outcome is guaranteed. You pay the issuer directly. A missed payment can end the concession and restore higher payments or fees.
Nonprofit debt-management plan Yes. You make one periodic payment to the counseling agency, which distributes funds to creditors. Ask about setup and monthly fees, creditor interest-rate concessions, and the total repayment cost. Accounts commonly must be closed or otherwise restricted; confirm which accounts and when. Enrollment and payment history can affect credit. Creditors may still pursue collection if payments fail. The counseling agency receives and distributes your payment. Ask whether a missed payment cancels concessions, returns accounts to standard terms, or triggers other action.
Debt consolidation Yes, through a new loan or credit product used to pay existing balances. Compare the annual percentage rate, origination fees, term, total interest, and any collateral requirement. A lower monthly payment can cost more over a longer term. Existing cards may remain open unless you close them; keeping them available can permit new debt. A new application can create a hard inquiry, and missed loan payments create additional risk. Consolidation does not erase the debt. You or the lender controls proceeds, depending on the product. You can end up with the new payment plus renewed card balances if spending is not controlled.
Debt settlement Many companies tell consumers to stop paying creditors while money accumulates; that is a major risk. Late fees and interest can grow. Company fees may apply, and forgiven debt can have tax consequences. Creditors may close accounts or charge them off while negotiations continue. Credit damage, intensified collection activity, and lawsuits are possible. A settlement company or dedicated account may hold funds; understand withdrawal rules and fees. Negotiations can fail while balances, fees, and legal risk continue.

Nonprofit credit counseling and debt-management plans

A reputable nonprofit counselor can review your budget, explain options, and sometimes arrange a debt-management plan (DMP). You make one scheduled payment to the agency; it distributes the money to participating creditors. A DMP is repayment, not debt erasure.

Questions to ask a counseling organization

  • What are the one-time setup fee and recurring monthly fee, and are they charged per account?
  • Which creditors and account types can participate?
  • What interest-rate concessions are confirmed in writing, and what is the estimated payoff date?
  • Must participating cards be closed, and will new credit be restricted?
  • How are payments transmitted, and how quickly do creditors receive them?
  • What happens if your income falls or one payment is late?
  • Can you cancel, and what fees or loss of concessions follows?

A counselor should help you build a payment that leaves essential bills affordable. Be cautious if anyone tells you to stop paying creditors, guarantees a particular credit-score result, or refuses to disclose fees and creditor participation before enrollment.

Why debt-settlement promises can make a charge-off more likely

Debt-settlement companies commonly instruct clients to stop paying creditors while funds accumulate for offers. The CFPB warns that this strategy can add late fees and interest, damage credit, increase collection calls, and expose you to lawsuits. Creditors are not required to accept an offer, and a company cannot guarantee that every debt will settle.

Reject claims of “pennies on the dollar” savings, a secret government program, guaranteed results, or a demand for substantial fees before a successful settlement and creditor agreement. The Federal Trade Commission advises people who are already behind to contact creditors directly and seek a lower, manageable payment plan. If you consider settlement despite the risks, ask a tax professional how canceled debt could be treated and obtain the settlement amount, payment schedule, fee, creditor acceptance, collection pause, and treatment of any remaining balance in writing before sending money.

If a collector is already calling

Do not ignore the contact, but do not disclose bank-account details or promise an unaffordable payment during a rushed call. Ask for:

  • the collector’s name, company, mailing address, and phone number;
  • the original creditor and account information;
  • the amount claimed, including an itemized explanation of interest and fees; and
  • the written validation information required for you to assess the debt.

If the debt is unfamiliar, inaccurate, already paid, or associated with the wrong person, dispute it promptly using the instructions and address in the validation notice. Keep copies and proof of delivery. A timely written dispute can require the collector to pause collection of the disputed amount until it responds, subject to applicable law.

If the debt is yours, calculate a payment that leaves rent, utilities, food, insurance, medical care, and other essentials covered. The CFPB warns that falling behind on another bill to pay this one can create more problems. Before any repayment or settlement payment, obtain a written agreement stating the amount, dates, payment method, any pause in collection, and whether the remaining balance will be forgiven. Do not rely on a verbal promise that a collector will “take care of the rest.”

What happens to your credit report

Accurate late-payment, collection, and charge-off information generally remains on a credit report for seven years from the relevant delinquency or activity date. Paying the balance does not automatically erase accurate negative history, although the status may update to show paid or resolved. A hardship arrangement’s reporting treatment must be confirmed with the issuer; do not assume that a reduced payment is reported as current.

Review reports from each major bureau after an arrangement, collection placement, payment, or settlement. Dispute information that is inaccurate, incomplete, duplicated, belongs to someone else, or cannot be verified. You can file a dispute yourself; paying a credit-repair company is not required to challenge information you can document.

How to prioritize several overdue accounts

  1. Protect essentials first. Keep housing, utilities, food, transportation, insurance, medication, and legally required obligations current.
  2. List every debt. Record creditor, balance, interest rate, minimum payment, days late, next due date, collection status, and whether collateral or a co-signer is involved.
  3. Contact each card issuer before the next escalation. Offer the same honest affordability calculation and request written hardship terms.
  4. Do not divide money based only on the loudest caller. A collector’s urgency does not make an unaffordable payment safe. Use a plan that keeps essentials and all agreed arrangements sustainable.
  5. Get professional legal or bankruptcy advice when necessary. If lawsuits, garnishment threats, overwhelming medical debt, or no feasible repayment budget are present, a licensed attorney or qualified nonprofit counselor can explain options specific to your jurisdiction.

Common mistakes that turn a temporary shortfall into a charge-off

  • Waiting until the 180-day benchmark or until a collection agency calls.
  • Paying a token amount without confirming whether it changes delinquency status or the next due date.
  • Accepting a hardship plan without understanding its end date, post-plan payment, reporting, or default clause.
  • Using rent, utility, food, insurance, or medication money to satisfy one card.
  • Taking a consolidation loan solely for a lower monthly payment while ignoring total interest and renewed card spending.
  • Stopping payments because a settlement firm promises a guaranteed reduction.
  • Paying an advance fee to a company that has not produced a creditor-approved result.
  • Ignoring validation notices, court papers, or inaccurate credit-report entries.
  • Relying on phone promises instead of preserving written terms and statements.

A printable prevention checklist

  • Calculate the maximum monthly payment that leaves essential expenses covered.
  • Call every affected issuer immediately and ask for its hardship department.
  • State your hardship, affordable amount, expected recovery date, and requested concession.
  • Ask about closure, interest, fees, reporting, due dates, and what happens after the plan.
  • Save written terms, confirmation numbers, statements, and payment receipts.
  • Set reminders and contact the issuer before any payment is late or returned.
  • Compare counseling, consolidation, and settlement by total cost and failure risk—not just the monthly payment.
  • Never stop paying solely because a settlement company instructs you to, and never pay an unexplained advance fee.
  • Validate collector claims, dispute errors promptly, and document any settlement or repayment agreement.
  • Check credit reports for accuracy after major account changes.
