If the encoder process itself crashes, a separate process supervisor can restart it. Neither measure guarantees that YouTube will accept the feed or that viewers can watch it, so test the setup before leaving it unattended.
What automatic reconnect does—and what it does not
An encoder sends video to YouTube using a server URL and stream key. If a supported encoder output loses its connection, its reconnect feature can retry delivery. That is different from restarting an encoder application that has exited, and different again from confirming that YouTube’s broadcast is healthy. Treat these as three checks: the encoder is running, YouTube is receiving the feed, and the viewer-facing watch page is playing.
OBS documents reconnect settings for supported outputs: a retry count of zero disables reconnect, and the wait between attempts doubles after each retry. This is a backoff strategy, not a promise of infinite retries or guaranteed recovery. See the OBS Output API Reference.
Set up the YouTube feed and protect its key

Open YouTube Studio and go to the Live Control Room. Create or select the live stream you intend to use, then copy its stream URL and stream key.

In OBS, open Settings > Stream. Select YouTube if available, or choose a custom server and enter YouTube’s stream URL and key. YouTube’s encoder workflow relies on these credentials to accept the feed; its live stream settings help explains the URL, key, and related options.

Keep the stream key private: YouTube describes it as like a password and address. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder before the next broadcast.

Check the stream’s auto-start and auto-stop settings in YouTube Studio. These settings can allow starting or stopping from the encoder when enabled, but confirm the settings for the specific scheduled or live setup you are using.
Enable OBS automatic reconnect

In OBS, open Settings > Advanced and find the Network section. Enable Automatically Reconnect for the streaming output. Labels and available controls may vary by OBS version and output.

Choose a retry delay and retry count appropriate for your operation. A finite retry count limits how long OBS will keep trying; zero disables reconnect. OBS doubles the retry wait on successive attempts, so recovery may take longer after repeated failures.

Apply the settings, then start a test stream and verify that YouTube receives it. Do not assume that seeing OBS attempt a reconnect means the broadcast is back for viewers.
Keep a crashed encoder process from staying down
Automatic reconnect is for supported output interruptions while the encoder is running. If OBS or another encoder exits because of a crash, reboot, or other process failure, the reconnect control cannot relaunch it. On a VPS, configure a separate process supervisor or service manager to restart the encoder process if it exits. How to configure that depends on the VPS operating system and the way you run the encoder; no particular supervisor or VPS provider is required by YouTube.
After a process restart, confirm that the encoder is using the intended stream URL and key and that YouTube is receiving data. A supervisor can restart a program, but it cannot validate the key or ensure the YouTube broadcast is in the correct state.

Choose stream settings the VPS connection can sustain
Set resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate together. YouTube’s current H.264 recommendations include 10 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 17 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps; recommendations differ for AV1 and H.265. These are YouTube guidance, not a guarantee that a particular VPS can sustain the bitrate. Check the hosting plan’s actual network capacity and route to YouTube ingestion, and leave capacity for overhead rather than treating the advertised connection rate as usable video bitrate. YouTube advises selecting reliable encoder settings for the connection in its encoder settings and bitrate guide.
Intermittent disconnections or dropped frames can point to a network issue between the encoder and ingest server. Possible causes include route quality, congestion, configuration, or host stability; reconnect software alone will not fix them. OBS’s connection troubleshooting guide discusses diagnosing these symptoms.
Test recovery and verify the viewer experience

Start a test broadcast and confirm that OBS reports a connected output and YouTube shows incoming video and stream health.

Deliberately interrupt the encoder’s network connection briefly. Observe whether OBS retries, whether YouTube resumes receiving the feed, and how long viewers see an interruption.

Check the YouTube event page or watch page from a viewer’s perspective. Encoder status alone does not prove playback is healthy.

If you use a process supervisor, separately test what happens when the encoder process exits. Confirm that it restarts and that the feed returns without requiring manual intervention.

Check the resulting archive after the test. YouTube recommends testing failover and monitoring the event and archive in its live streaming tips.
YouTube’s Live Streaming API distinguishes stream-resource states such as active (data is being received), inactive (data is not being received), ready, created, and error. These are stream-resource states, not a complete description of every broadcast lifecycle state. The API also exposes health information; see LiveStreams.

Plan around 24/7 archives
A continuous 24/7 broadcast and one complete automatically archived video are not the same promise. YouTube says that streams under 12 hours are automatically archived in its encoder streaming instructions. That statement does not establish that a 24-hour-or-longer stream will be saved as one complete archive. If a single archive matters, plan a shorter broadcast schedule and verify the saved video after each stream.
Troubleshoot common reconnect failures
