The reliable way to archive an ad’s appearance is a scheduled, authorized browser capture of the platform’s preview or campaign interface, stored with delivery metadata. Platform reporting tells you what was delivered and how it performed; it does not normally preserve a visual image. A TikTok phone preview and a Google Ads account view can help you review creative, but neither should be described as automatic proof of a live impression to a particular user.
Decide what evidence you actually need
“A screenshot of a running campaign” can mean three different records. Choose one before writing automation:
- Creative review: an image of the ad as rendered in an account preview. This is useful for approvals, brand checks and regression tracking.
- Account-view evidence: a capture of Ads Manager showing campaign, ad, status, placement and selected settings.
- Served-placement evidence: what a real visitor saw in a particular auction, location, device and moment. A preview cannot guarantee this result; targeting, auction selection, personalization and rendering can differ.
Keep visual captures separate from performance data. Google Ads reporting can query structured metrics for resources such as campaigns and keywords through Search or SearchStream, but reporting is not an image archive. TikTok’s documented preview workflow displays an ad on a phone through a QR code or user ID; it is a preview, not a documented automatic archive of every live placement.
What the official platform tools can and cannot do
Google Ads
Google provides the Google Ads API, Google Ads scripts and other advertising APIs for technically capable advertisers and third parties. Use those interfaces to identify campaigns, ads, statuses and reporting rows, then pass the relevant account and preview URL to an authorized browser capture. The API alone does not return a screenshot of a rendered placement.

TikTok Ads
Ads Manager’s phone preview can be opened with a QR code or user ID. Automating a capture of that authorized preview can preserve creative appearance, but do not label it proof that TikTok served the ad to a specific person. TikTok’s Commercial Content API exposes public ad and advertiser metadata, including publication and last-seen information for research; it is not described as an endpoint for screenshots from your authenticated advertiser account.
Policy and authorization
Use the account owner’s consent, an approved service account or another documented login method. Google’s Ads API policy lists reporting and monitoring services among approved developer-service use cases in relevant contexts, while still requiring compliance with its rules. Other platforms can impose different restrictions. Recheck current policies, consent requirements, rate limits and authentication behavior before deployment.
A repeatable capture architecture
- Inventory scope. Record platform, account, campaign, ad, placement, country or region, device class and capture frequency. Decide whether you need a preview, account UI or public placement.
- Obtain an authorized session. Use OAuth, a platform-supported service account or a dedicated browser profile. Store secrets in a secret manager; never put passwords or tokens in source control.
- Resolve the target. Query campaign metadata and status first. Skip paused, deleted or disapproved ads unless your audit explicitly includes them.
- Open the exact view. Navigate to the platform preview or account page, select the intended placement and device, and wait for the creative and reporting labels to render.
- Stabilize the page. Wait for a known selector, network idle or a bounded delay. Close consent dialogs only when your account workflow permits it; otherwise record that the capture was blocked.
- Capture and annotate. Save PNG, JPEG or WebP plus an immutable JSON record containing UTC time, platform, account, campaign, ad ID, placement, geography, device, source URL, browser version and a content hash.
- Validate. Reject blank pages, login screens, bot checks, timeouts and images below your minimum dimensions. Keep the failure reason and retry count.
- Retain responsibly. Encrypt storage, restrict access and set a retention period. Ad creative may contain personal data, regulated claims or information covered by client confidentiality.
Browser automation details that matter
Session lifecycle
Expect sessions to expire, require MFA or trigger a new-device challenge. Run a health check before the campaign job, alert on a login redirect, and provide a manual re-authentication path. Do not attempt to defeat CAPTCHAs or other access controls.

Selectors and layout
Prefer stable, accessibility-based selectors or platform-provided preview links over brittle CSS paths. Capture at the placement’s intended viewport and, when relevant, at a device pixel ratio matching the preview. Save a full-page image when labels and timestamps are evidence; save the creative element separately when visual comparison is the goal.

Use a maximum wait and exponential backoff rather than an unlimited wait. Retry transient network failures, but do not repeatedly retry an account lock, policy block or deterministic “ad unavailable” result. Keep the first failure screenshot or HTML diagnostic where policy permits.
Scheduling and idempotency
Run from a queue or scheduler at a fixed UTC cadence. Give each job a key such as platform/account/ad/placement/time-window; this prevents duplicate captures after a worker restart. Separate discovery (which ads are active) from rendering (which views to capture), so a reporting outage does not erase previously saved images.

Metadata and storage checklist
- Capture timestamp in UTC and the scheduler’s intended time.
- Platform, account and campaign identifiers; ad or creative identifier.
- Placement, device viewport, pixel ratio, language, timezone and geography.
- Preview or account-view URL and a hash of the image.
- Campaign status and any performance-row identifiers used for correlation.
- Browser/automation version, wait strategy, retry count and verdict (success, blank, blocked, timeout or login required).
This context lets an auditor distinguish “the preview looked like this at 14:00 UTC” from “the platform reported an impression at 14:00 UTC.” Keep those statements separate.

Troubleshooting
The capture is a login page
The session was not restored or MFA expired. Stop retries, alert an operator, re-authenticate through the platform’s supported flow and rotate any compromised session data.
The image is blank or incomplete
Wait for a creative selector or network idle, allow lazy assets to load and capture the correct iframe or element. Record a bounded timeout instead of silently storing a blank file.

Check placement, device, language, timezone, geography and personalization. A preview does not reproduce every auction or user context; correlate it with platform delivery logs.

A job is blocked by a CAPTCHA or bot check
Do not bypass it. Follow the platform’s authorized access process, reduce automation frequency if permitted and mark the job as blocked.
The platform UI changed
Centralize selectors, add a canary capture and alert on missing labels. Version your automation and retain a small set of known-good fixtures for review.

Can an API automatically save every live impression?
Not on the evidence documented here. Reporting APIs provide structured data, while previews and browser captures provide visual context; neither establishes an archive of every user’s rendered impression.
