Set the conferenceDataVersion request parameter to 1, then wait for Google to finish creating the conference before displaying its join link.
What you need before creating an event
- An appropriate calendar ID and write access to that calendar for the signed-in user.
- OAuth authorization that permits the app to make the intended calendar changes. Google’s event-creation guide gives
https://www.googleapis.com/auth/calendaras an edit-scope example; in production, request the narrowest scope that supports your app’s behavior. - Valid start and end fields. Timed events use
start.dateTimeandend.dateTime; all-day events usestart.dateandend.date.

Request a Meet conference when inserting the event
Use the Calendar API’s events.insert() method with the target calendar ID, the event’s start and end, and a conferenceData.createRequest. Set the conference solution type to hangoutsMeet, and include conferenceDataVersion=1 on the insert request. That version parameter is required for the API to create or persist conference details.

Give each new conference request a fresh requestId. Reusing an ID from an earlier request causes the repeated request to be ignored. The Calendar API supports creating, reading, copying, and clearing conference data; for a newly scheduled event, request a new conference rather than reusing details from another event. Handle conference creation asynchronously
A successful event insertion does not necessarily mean the Meet link is ready. Conference generation can initially return with status pending. Once processing finishes, status becomes success with entry points populated, or failure without entry points.
- Submit the event with its conference creation request and
conferenceDataVersion=1. - Keep the event in a pending state while the conference request is unresolved.
- Make the join link available only after a successful conference status includes the video entry point.
- If generation fails, do not expose a join URL; let the user know that no conference link was created and provide an appropriate retry or rescheduling path.
Use the event’s returned or subsequently retrieved conference data to determine status and entry points; do not construct a Meet URL yourself. The status and request behavior are documented in the Calendar API event resource reference.

Protect meeting privacy and existing event data
Generate a separate conference for each event
Google warns that reusing Meet conference data across events can cause access problems and expose meeting details to unintended users. Generate a unique conference for every event with createRequest. Google’s event reference says: “To help ensure meeting privacy, always generate a unique conference for each event by using the createRequest field.”
Full-sync an existing local event cache first
If your app already stores Calendar events locally, perform a full sync of those events before enabling conferenceDataVersion=1 on modifications. Google’s event-creation guide warns that modifying events without that sync can inadvertently remove conference details already present on them. This precaution applies when extending an existing integration; a new app without a local event cache does not have that migration step.

Choose the Google API surface that matches the feature

The Meet REST API acts on behalf of the signed-in user and follows that user’s permissions. Google recommends using the narrowest scopes the app needs. Its Meet authorization guide classifies scopes by sensitivity: some meeting-space scopes are sensitive, while scopes for downloading Meet-created Drive recordings and transcripts are restricted. Google says restricted-scope data stored on or transmitted through servers requires a security assessment. Check the current classification and applicable verification requirements for the exact features you plan to launch.
Google also says the Meet REST API is not intended for performance tracking or user evaluation within a domain, and Meet data should not be collected for those purposes. Keep data access aligned with the feature the user asked for and the permissions they granted.
