URL2PNG documents a per-request API pattern; it does not document a spreadsheet batch endpoint. For a large list where a ZIP is more convenient, a separate service, url2image, documents batch submission.
How the spreadsheet workflow fits together
Treat the sheet as a job list, not as the place to store credentials or image files. A robust process has five stages:

- Read: fetch a defined range and retain each row number so results can be written back to the correct record.
- Validate: skip blank rows and reject malformed or unsupported URLs before spending a request.
- Capture: make one signed URL2PNG API request per URL, using the documented v6 request format.
- Store: save successful image responses to durable storage and record a filename or stable image URL.
- Report: write a status and, when relevant, an error message back to the original row.
Google Sheets supports reading and updating ranges, including batch reads and updates, through its Sheets API. That reference covers sheet operations; it is not a ready-made URL2PNG connector. The storage service and authentication method are choices you must supply for your own environment.

Prepare URL2PNG credentials and signing
URL2PNG v6 requests use an API key, a token, and URL-encoded query parameters. In its Quickstart Guide, URL2PNG describes the token as the MD5 hash of the entire query string concatenated with the secret key. Follow the live documentation’s exact parameter names and canonicalization rules: the query string used for signing must be the same one sent in the request. Changing parameter order or encoding a value differently can produce a different signature.

- Keep the secret key in an environment variable or protected runtime secret store. Never put it in sheet cells, a shared workbook, or client-side code.
- Use a server-side script or another trusted runtime to sign requests. Do not expose the signing secret to spreadsheet viewers.
- Build the query string once, then use that exact string for both signing and transmission.
- Confirm the v6 docs for the precise endpoint, required parameter names, and signature procedure before deploying; the code below outlines the workflow but is not a drop-in signer or Google Sheets integration.
Choose capture settings before processing rows
URL2PNG’s documented controls include viewport dimensions, full-page capture, thumbnail width, custom CSS, Accept-Language and user-agent headers, a delay, a “say cheese” option that waits for a page element, and a unique value to force a fresh screenshot. Its examples list a maximum viewport of 5000 × 5000. The docs say fullpage defaults to false, so the default captures only the viewport. The documented default cache TTL is 2,592,000 seconds (30 days), according to URL2PNG’s Quickstart Guide accessed in 2026.
- Set a viewport that matches the content you need; very large dimensions can produce heavier output.
- Use full-page capture when the whole document matters; use viewport capture when a consistent above-the-fold image is enough.
- Choose a delay or element-wait condition for pages that render content after initial load.
- Use
uniqueonly when you need to bypass the cached result and force a fresh render. - Set language or user-agent headers only when they are needed to reproduce the visitor experience you want.
Read the spreadsheet and process URLs
For a Google Sheet, read the input range through the Sheets API, then process its rows in a server-side job. Preserve a row identifier alongside every URL so that the result can be written back accurately even if some rows are skipped. For other spreadsheet products, use their equivalent range-read and range-update APIs.
- Choose an input column for URLs and output columns for image location, status, and error details.
- Fetch the input range in one read where practical; do not issue a separate spreadsheet read for each row.
- Trim each value and skip empty cells. Validate that it is an absolute HTTP or HTTPS URL before requesting a capture.
- Send one signed capture request per accepted URL, with the capture options you chose.
- For a successful response, save the image bytes to durable storage and retain its returned or generated filename/link.
- For a failed request, record a concise status and diagnostic rather than silently leaving a blank result.
- Write result rows back in a batch update where practical, rather than making one spreadsheet write per screenshot.
URL2PNG’s quickstart contains examples for Python, Node.js, cURL, Ruby, PHP, and other languages. Because the exact signing string is sensitive to encoding and order, use its current example as the source of truth for your selected runtime instead of copying an improvised MD5 implementation.

Store outputs and make the run recoverable
Screenshot image bytes should go to object storage, a file service, or another location that remains available to the people who need the sheet. A spreadsheet cell is usually best used for a link or filename, not as the image archive. Define a stable output naming scheme, such as a row identifier plus a run identifier, so reruns do not accidentally overwrite a useful prior capture.
- Write the output location only after the image upload succeeds.
- Track statuses such as pending, complete, skipped, and failed so interrupted jobs can resume deliberately.
- Keep per-row errors short and actionable; store fuller logs in the job runtime if needed.
- For recoverability, update the sheet in batches after a group of successful captures rather than waiting until every URL has finished.
- Do not assume URL2PNG’s cache is durable image storage for your spreadsheet workflow; retain your own copy or stable output reference as required.
Control runtime, reliability, and cost
URL2PNG’s plan page says cached screenshot loads within its 30-day cache period do not count as fresh renders. As listed on the official page accessed 2026-10-03, the paid plans were Bootstrapped at $29/month for 5,000 fresh screenshots, Traction at $99/month for 20,000, and Killinit at $199/month for 50,000, with listed extra-render charges of $0.006, $0.005, and $0.004 respectively. Enterprise pricing is quote-based. The page says there is no free account and month-to-month cancellation is available. Prices and allowances can change; confirm the current URL2PNG plans before budgeting. These are provider-listed terms, not an independently measured cost forecast.
Estimate fresh-render volume rather than spreadsheet row count alone: repeated URLs may be cache hits unless you request uniqueness or the relevant cache behavior changes. A run that forces a fresh screenshot for every row should be budgeted accordingly. Avoid sending the entire sheet concurrently without considering your own runtime, storage, and provider constraints; process manageable groups, record outcomes, and resume failed rows deliberately. The reviewed official materials do not establish a specific rate limit or a ready-made retry policy, so check the live API terms rather than assuming a safe concurrency number.

When a batch-and-ZIP workflow may fit better
If the main goal is to submit hundreds of URLs and retrieve a single archive, url2image is a separate alternative—not a URL2PNG batch feature. Its homepage accepts pasted URLs, CSV or text uploads, or JSON API input and says results include a ZIP with images, manifest.json, and not-rendered.csv. Its API docs describe batch submission, job polling, and ZIP download.

Choose URL2PNG when you want a per-row request flow that can write results into your existing sheet and manage image storage yourself. Consider url2image when batch submission and a downloadable archive better match the job, while accounting for its stated retention and destination restrictions. Its quoted pricing and limits are provider listings accessed in 2026, not independently verified service performance.

URL2PNG rejects the token or request
Check that your signing input matches the transmitted query string exactly, including parameter order and URL encoding. Rebuild the canonical query string once and use it for both signing and sending. Verify the API key, secret, endpoint, and required parameter names against the current v6 guide.

The screenshot shows only the top of the page
URL2PNG documents fullpage as false by default. Set it explicitly when a full-page image is required, and confirm the selected viewport and any thumbnail setting are not reducing the result unexpectedly.
The screenshot misses content that appears later
Use a deliberate delay or the documented “say cheese” element-wait option for content that loads after the initial page render. If a page remains incomplete, record that row for review rather than repeatedly forcing fresh renders without checking the capture condition.
Reruns create more fresh-render usage than expected
Check whether the request is using a unique value or otherwise bypassing the cache. URL2PNG says cached loads within the 30-day cache period do not count as fresh renders; forcing uniqueness defeats the purpose of reusing a cached capture.
The image is missing from the sheet
Separate capture from storage and sheet writing in your status fields. If a screenshot request succeeded but the image link is blank, check the storage upload step; if the file exists but the sheet is unchanged, inspect the Sheets API range and update response. Google’s API reference documents range reads and writes, but your integration must supply its own authentication and error handling.
A url2image batch URL is refused or its archive is gone
Its docs say private, loopback, and link-local destinations are not accepted, and results/images are deleted after 14 days. Use only eligible public destinations and download the archive before the retention window closes.
