This guide uses Playwright for a practical first test and CI setup, then explains when Cypress or another test level may suit your project better.
What UI automation should prove
A UI test should verify an outcome in the rendered application, not merely that a page loaded or a button can be clicked. Choose a task whose failure would matter—such as signing in or completing a core purchase—and define what the user should observe when it succeeds.
Browser-based end-to-end tests exercise the integrated journey, so they can catch failures that isolated unit or API tests cannot. They also require a working application, browser setup, CI resources, and ongoing maintenance. Begin with a small number of high-value flows rather than trying to automate every page.
Playwright’s Best Practices guide recommends interacting with the rendered output in the way an end user does. That points toward accessible, user-visible locators and assertions about meaningful results.

Set up Playwright for your project
Use the current official installation instructions for the language and package manager your application already uses. Installation details differ by language, operating system, and package manager, so confirm the matching steps in Playwright’s Continuous Integration guide before copying commands into a project. For Node-based CI, the general sequence is to install project packages, install Playwright’s browser binaries and required system dependencies, and run the test command.
The example below is the official documentation pattern, not a claim of independent execution. Replace the sample URL and expected heading with your own app and the outcome your user should see.
import { test, expect } from '@playwright/test';
test('get started link', async ({ page }) => {
await page.goto('https://playwright.dev/');
await page.getByRole('link', { name: 'Get started' }).click();
await expect(page.getByRole('heading', { name: 'Installation' })).toBeVisible();
});
The test navigates to a page, finds a link by its accessible role and name, clicks it, then checks for a visible heading. In your app, use a journey-specific test name and assert the final state that matters, such as a confirmation message after submitting a form.

Write reliable actions and assertions
Prefer locators that express user intent
Role-based locators such as getByRole('button', { name: 'Sign in' }) describe how a user or assistive technology identifies a control. They are generally more resilient than selectors tied to incidental markup or styling. If a control lacks a useful accessible name, improving the application’s accessibility may make it easier to test and use.
Assert the outcome, not just the action
A click completing does not prove that a task succeeded. Follow important actions with an assertion on the visible state the user expects: a heading, confirmation, updated value, or newly available control. Playwright’s Writing tests guide demonstrates role-based locators and web-first expectations that retry while the expected condition is not yet true.
Wait for state instead of sleeping
Playwright checks actionability before performing actions and retries web-first assertions while waiting for the expected state. Prefer asserting that a confirmation appears or a control becomes available over adding a fixed delay. When a wait is genuinely necessary, tie it to an application state or a deliberately controlled network condition rather than an unexplained number of milliseconds.

Run locally, then add CI
- Run the test locally with the command documented for your language and project setup. Confirm that it reaches the intended page and checks the intended outcome.
- Reproduce the setup in CI: install project dependencies cleanly, install the matching Playwright browsers and system dependencies, then run the test suite.
- Start with one worker. Playwright’s CI guidance recommends one worker initially to favor stability and reproducibility.
- Scale only when resources justify it. Consider parallel workers or sharding across CI jobs when your machine capacity and pipeline design can support them.
- Keep failure evidence useful. Preserve relevant artifacts and diagnostics, and investigate repeat failures rather than reflexively rerunning tests until they pass.
Browser and CI setup details can change. Check the current framework guidance for the exact browser support, versions, and provider-specific configuration used by your project.
Choose the right test level as you expand
Not every risk needs a full browser journey. Cypress’s Testing Types documentation describes end-to-end, component, and API testing as approaches for different needs, with accessibility checks able to layer onto them. Use the lightest test level that gives appropriate confidence; reserve end-to-end coverage for integrated user journeys where the browser path matters.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- End-to-end: validate important integrated flows through the browser.
- Component: check a component in isolation when the question is about its behavior rather than a complete user journey.
- API: verify service behavior without paying the setup and maintenance cost of a browser test when visual interaction is not the risk.
- Accessibility: add checks as a layer, rather than treating them as a replacement for other test types.
Playwright or Cypress: how to decide
There is no universal winner established across all stacks. Playwright provides a clear starter pattern and CI path; Cypress is also a credible option. Compare them against your application and team rather than relying on an unsupported benchmark.

The test cannot find a control
Check that the page reached the expected state and that the locator’s role and accessible name match the rendered control. Prefer correcting a missing or unclear accessible name over anchoring a test to fragile styling or incidental markup.
The test passes locally but fails in CI
Compare the local and CI dependency and browser setup. Ensure CI installs the matching browser binaries and system dependencies, and begin with one worker so shared-state or resource contention is less likely to obscure the cause.

The test is flaky around navigation or loading
Replace fixed sleeps with an assertion on the expected page state. Actions include actionability checks, while web-first assertions retry until the condition is true; a timeout often indicates an unmet expectation or an application/setup issue worth diagnosing.
The suite is slow or costly to maintain
Review whether each browser test protects a meaningful integrated journey. Move checks that do not require the browser to an appropriate lower-level test, and add parallel execution only when available CI resources justify it.
