Before automating an Indian government portal
Portal rules differ. Before running a script, check the particular service’s terms and access policy, and confirm that your intended page and capture state are permitted. This general guide cannot establish that automation is approved for an unnamed portal, or determine its authentication requirements or rate limits.

Decide what the screenshot should show: a public landing page, a page after an authorized interaction, or an error state. Record the portal and route, browser, viewport dimensions, relevant locale or display settings, and capture time so another person can interpret or reproduce the image.

Set up a Selenium screenshot in Python
Install Selenium in the Python environment you will use, and make sure a compatible browser and driver are available according to your Selenium setup. This example uses Chromium’s Python WebDriver API and captures the current window; replace the example URL with the authorized portal route you need.

Replace it with a condition tied to the content you need, such as a result container becoming visible or expected text appearing. The Chromium API documents the current-window screenshot as PNG and returns a boolean indicating whether an I/O error occurred.

Wait for the page state you intend to capture
A navigation reaching document readiness does not guarantee that JavaScript-driven content has appeared or become visible. Wait for the condition relevant to the screenshot, rather than treating a completed navigation or an arbitrary pause as proof that the page is ready. Selenium recommends explicit waits when an action depends on a changing page state and warns that mixing implicit and explicit waits can lead to unpredictable timeout behavior. - For a results page, wait until the results container is visible.
- For a status lookup, wait for the expected status element or text to appear.
- After an authorized button click, wait for the resulting panel, confirmation, or error state—not just for the click to return.
- If the page presents a CAPTCHA or login challenge, stop for an authorized human or use an approved test environment. Do not make CAPTCHA bypass part of ordinary screenshot automation.

Capture the viewport or the full document
Be explicit about scope. Selenium’s Chromium Python API documents a screenshot of the current window, while its Firefox Python API documents full-document screenshot methods. Do not assume the Firefox method is available in Chromium or in every Selenium language binding; use the API documented for your browser and binding.

Verify and label each capture
After saving, check that the output exists and visually depicts the intended route and page state. Keep the filename or an accompanying record specific enough to distinguish repeat captures—for example, include the portal, route or service, timestamp, browser, viewport, and whether it is viewport or full-document output. This is useful recordkeeping, not a Selenium guarantee.
Troubleshoot common screenshot problems
- The screenshot is blank or shows only a shell: The page may have navigated before its JavaScript content was ready. Replace a generic readiness check with an explicit wait for the particular content or state to capture.
- The expected data is missing: Confirm the selected route and state, then wait for the result element or expected text. A successful navigation alone does not establish that dynamic content is present.
- The image covers only the visible window:
save_screenshot()is the documented Chromium current-window capture. Use a browser/binding method that explicitly supports full-document capture, such as the documented Firefox Python API, when that is the requirement. - The screenshot file is absent or unusable: Check the boolean returned by
save_screenshot(), confirm the process can write to the chosen path, and verify that the file exists after capture. - The run stalls at a verification or login prompt: Treat that as a human-verification boundary. Use an authorized human or approved test environment; do not attempt to defeat the barrier.
- Waits time out unpredictably: Avoid mixing implicit and explicit waits. Make the explicit condition match the page state that must be true before capture.
