Automate recurring screenshots by pairing a browser capture script with a scheduler: use Playwright to render each public page, then run the script from CI or a machine-level scheduler such as cron. Keep the browser conditions stable, record when and how each image was captured, and treat a failed capture separately from a genuine website change.
Plan what each screenshot should record
Before writing the job, define the record you need. List the exact public URLs, the page region that matters, the capture cadence, the retention period for images, and who will inspect a change or failure. A screenshot is evidence of what rendered under particular conditions; by itself, it cannot explain whether a difference is important.

Choose the capture scope
Playwright supports viewport, element, and full-page screenshots. Choose based on the evidence you need, not simply on the longest image you can produce. - Element: Captures a specific element, such as a service-status panel. This is useful when surrounding page content changes often but the panel is what reviewers need.

Build a repeatable Playwright capture
Install Playwright for Python and its browser binaries in the environment that will run the scheduled job. Save the following as capture.py. It captures the full page, records the final URL and timestamp in a sidecar file, and writes a screenshot for each configured address.

Schedule the capture
Capture and recurrence are separate responsibilities: Playwright renders the image; a scheduler launches that script repeatedly. For a Linux machine using cron, first ensure Python, Playwright, and the required browser are installed in the same environment used by cron. Then edit the user’s crontab with crontab -e and add a schedule such as:

If the goal is to detect visual changes, compare a new image with an accepted baseline, then route differences to a person for review. Do not treat every pixel difference as a meaningful service change. Dynamic banners, dates, rotating content, and rendering variation can produce differences. Keep the execution environment consistent, and update a baseline intentionally only after a reviewer accepts a real site change. Handle failures as failures
A timeout, navigation error, access-denied response, browser error, or empty rendering should be logged as a failed capture, not reported as proof that a municipal service page changed. Keep failure metadata separate from screenshots that completed successfully. Decide how operators will be notified, whether failed attempts are retained, and how many retries are appropriate for your use case.
- Navigation timeout: Check connectivity and the page’s response time; increase the timeout only when the delay is expected and the job can safely wait longer.
- Access denied or bot check: Record the outcome and review the site’s current access terms. Do not interpret the block page as the target content or attempt to bypass access controls.
- Blank or incomplete page: Check whether content loads after navigation or requires an interaction, and wait for a meaningful page condition rather than assuming the initial document load is sufficient.
- Visual differences across runs: Confirm browser version, operating system, viewport, scale, and other capture settings before deciding that the site changed.
Check site-specific access and operating limits
Review the current terms, automated-access restrictions, and relevant policies for each municipal website before scheduling requests. There is no single permitted request rate established for Indian municipal websites, so do not assume one rate applies everywhere. Start conservatively and increase only when the use case and the specific site’s conditions justify it. Retention and reuse conditions should also be checked for each site; a screenshot archive does not itself grant permission to republish captured material.
