You can automate scheduled screenshots only if the portal owner permits it and its OTP flow supports an approved automation pattern. For a portal that allows it, authenticate through the real login flow once, save Playwright’s browser state as a protected secret, and reuse that state on scheduled runs—checking that the session is still valid before capturing. OTP delivery, expiry, CAPTCHA, and automation rules vary by portal; there is no universal recipe.
Get approval and identify the portal’s OTP flow first
Before writing a script, ask the portal owner whether automated access is allowed, which pages may be captured, how often, and how screenshots may be retained. Use a dedicated least-privilege account if the portal supports one. Check the portal’s terms and access controls; general guidance cannot establish permission for an unnamed portal.

OTP is not necessarily an SMS code. Government website guidance describes multiple patterns, including application-specific OTP, Aadhaar-based OTP, and TOTP. Confirm which method the portal actually supports and whether unattended automation is approved. Do not scrape a personal inbox or SMS account, bypass CAPTCHA, evade rate limits, or rely on an undocumented login API. Choose a supported way to authenticate
Use the real login UI when that is the approved route
Playwright can interact with a login page and save the resulting browser state for later contexts. Complete the portal’s OTP challenge through its supported flow. The actual selectors, OTP entry mechanism, and success condition depend on the portal, so a generic script cannot safely or reliably fill them in.

Use an API only when the portal supports it
Playwright also documents authenticating through an API request when the application supports that method. This can avoid UI fragility, but it is not evidence that this portal has such an API. Use it only with owner approval and official documentation; do not reverse-engineer or bypass the portal’s login controls. Playwright authentication documentation
Save browser state after successful OTP authentication
In a Playwright project, create a setup step that performs the approved login and saves the authenticated context state. Playwright’s documented setup-project pattern lets later tests or browser contexts reuse that state. The supported state can include cookies, local storage, IndexedDB, and passkey-based authentication.
For example, the core save operation is:

Treat the output file as a live credential, not ordinary test data. Playwright warns: “The browser state file may contain sensitive cookies and headers that could be used to impersonate you or your test account.” Its documentation says: “We strongly discourage checking them into private or public repositories.”

- Store the state in a restricted secret location accessible only to the scheduled job.
- Exclude the auth directory from version control and build artifacts.
- Limit access to the account and state file; do not print cookies, OTPs, or tokens to logs.
- Delete or refresh the state when the portal expires it, the account is revoked, or the capture job no longer needs access.

Account for session storage separately
The usual Playwright storage-state mechanism does not persist sessionStorage across page loads. Playwright notes that sessionStorage is domain-specific. First establish whether the portal actually depends on it; do not add custom sessionStorage injection by default. If it is required and the owner approves the approach, review the implications of transferring that data into a new context and protect it as carefully as cookies and tokens.
Reuse state in each scheduled capture
A scheduled run should load the protected state, open the authorized page, verify authentication, and only then save an image. The following is a generic Playwright pattern, not a turnkey portal script: replace the URL and success locator with values confirmed for your portal, and provide the state file through a protected runtime location.

}The locator above is illustrative. Use a stable condition that distinguishes the expected authenticated page from a login page, OTP challenge, access-denied message, or application error. If the check fails or navigation redirects to authentication, report a failed run and alert an operator rather than storing a misleading screenshot.
Plan for expiry and interactive OTP
Reusing state avoids repeating login only while the portal accepts that state. Expiry and revocation rules are portal-specific. If the portal demands a fresh interactive OTP for every run, unattended capture may not be appropriate; arrange an owner-approved reauthentication procedure or stop the job. Do not defeat a renewed challenge.
Make captures stable and schedule the job reliably
Page layout can change while fonts, images, animations, or data load. Wait for the portal’s relevant content rather than assuming that a navigation event means the page is ready. For production capture, the scheduler must also handle job timing, output storage, alerts, and success/failure classification; a screenshot assertion alone does not provide those operational pieces.

Playwright’s screenshot assertions wait for consecutive screenshots to stabilize before comparing them. Their options include handling animations and the caret, and choosing CSS-pixel or device-pixel scaling. These are useful when the goal is visual comparison in a test runner; a scheduled production capture can instead use the page screenshot API, as in the example above. Common failures and safe fixes
- The job lands on the login or OTP page: the state may have expired, been revoked, or failed to load. Mark the run failed, protect the diagnostic output, and reauthenticate through the approved flow.
- The OTP step cannot run unattended: the portal may require interaction or a delivery channel unsuitable for automation. Ask the owner for a supported workflow; do not scrape personal messages or bypass the challenge.
- A CAPTCHA, rate limit, or access-denied response appears: stop automated attempts and contact the portal owner. Do not evade the control.
- The screenshot is blank or incomplete: verify the authenticated success condition and wait for the specific content needed for the capture. Avoid saving a failed page as a successful result.
- Authentication works in one run but not another: check that the scheduled process can read the intended state file and that the account remains authorized. Rotate or recreate state through the approved setup process rather than exposing it in logs.
- Expected session data is missing: determine whether the portal uses sessionStorage, which the usual storageState mechanism does not persist, and handle it only after assessing security and owner approval.
Security controls are part of the implementation
