Do not assume a plain webdriver.Opera() call or Selenium Manager will configure OperaDriver automatically.
What you need to know before setup
Opera’s OperaChromiumDriver is a WebDriver implementation derived from ChromeDriver and adapted for Chromium-based Opera. Opera’s desktop instructions say to use RemoteWebDriver for this browser route. The guide’s latest commit is dated 2023-03-09, so its example establishes a documented setup pattern, not a verified compatibility matrix for current Opera, OperaDriver, Selenium, operating-system, and Python releases.
Selenium’s Python documentation supports Python 3.10 and later and gives pip install -U selenium as the install command. Selenium Manager handles driver and browser setup for most supported combinations, but Opera is not listed in the browser-specific sections on Selenium’s Supported Browsers page. For Opera, follow Opera’s driver-specific route unless current authoritative documentation confirms a different one.

Before relying on the combination, check the chosen OperaDriver release against the installed Opera/Chromium build, then run a small smoke test on the target operating system and Python/Selenium versions. The published desktop guide does not provide a dependable current version matrix.
Launch Opera and run a first Selenium test
This Selenium 4 example follows Opera’s documented desktop construction pattern. Replace both paths with real paths on your machine. It is a documented pattern, not a claim that every present-day version combination has been tested.

from selenium import webdriver
from selenium.webdriver.chrome import service
opera_driver_path = "/path/to/operadriver"
opera_binary_path = "/path/to/opera"
service = service.Service(opera_driver_path)
service.start()
driver = None
try:
options = webdriver.ChromeOptions()
options.binary_location = opera_binary_path
options.add_experimental_option("w3c", True)
driver = webdriver.Remote(
command_executor=service.service_url,
options=options,
)
driver.get("https://example.com")
print(driver.title)
finally:
if driver is not None:
driver.quit()
service.stop()
The example starts OperaDriver locally, passes Selenium Chrome options because Opera is Chromium-based, and connects through RemoteWebDriver. Setting binary_location makes the browser executable explicit. Opera’s example also shows a service port argument; configure a locally appropriate port if needed, and avoid port conflicts. The finally block closes the browser session and stops the local service even if navigation or an assertion fails.
Choose how Opera is located or connected
Opera’s desktop guide documents three launch and connection approaches. These are configuration choices, not independently benchmarked alternatives.

| Approach | How it works | When it fits | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Specify the executable | Set options.binary_location to Opera’s path, as in the example. |
Use when Opera is installed in a non-default location or you want the test to target a specific executable. | You must keep the path correct for the machine running the test. |
| Let OperaDriver detect Opera | Omit the explicit binary path and let the driver find the browser. | Use when the installation is in a location the driver detects. | Success depends on installation location and driver detection. |
| Attach to a running Opera instance | Start Opera with --remote-debugging-port, then configure the corresponding debugger address for the driver. |
Use when a workflow needs to connect to a browser launched separately. | Opera must be started with remote debugging enabled, and the debugger address and port must match. |
The Opera guide describes the explicit binary through the operaOptions capability; with the Selenium 4 desktop options pattern above, the browser path is set with ChromeOptions.binary_location. Its Python setup page also includes older Selenium 2/3 material. Do not mix those legacy capability examples with Selenium 4 options without adapting them to the API generation in use.
Turn the smoke test into a useful website test
Once the session starts, use the standard WebDriver workflow: navigate, locate elements with stable selectors, interact, wait for asynchronous UI changes, and assert the resulting state. Selenium describes WebDriver as native browser automation and documents testing as a common use.

from selenium.webdriver.common.by import By
from selenium.webdriver.support import expected_conditions as EC
from selenium.webdriver.support.ui import WebDriverWait
# After driver.get("https://your-test-site.example"):
submit = WebDriverWait(driver, 10).until(
EC.element_to_be_clickable((By.CSS_SELECTOR, "button[type='submit']"))
)
submit.click()
message = WebDriverWait(driver, 10).until(
EC.visibility_of_element_located((By.CSS_SELECTOR, "[role='status']"))
)
assert "complete" in message.text.lower()
- Prefer stable selectors: use IDs, accessible roles where available, or purpose-built test attributes rather than brittle positional selectors.
- Wait for the condition you need: explicit waits help with delayed rendering and network-driven UI; avoid fixed sleeps unless the page has a specific timing requirement.
- Keep cleanup unconditional: put
driver.quit()andservice.stop()in cleanup paths so failed assertions do not leave browser processes behind.
Troubleshoot common startup and test failures
- Opera executable not found: verify the path and file permissions. Opera’s setup page points to the binary option when the default install location fails; in the Selenium 4 sample, set
options.binary_locationto the full executable path. - Driver starts but the browser session fails: check that the path names the actual Opera executable and that the OperaDriver release is compatible with the installed Opera/Chromium build. The published pages do not establish a reliable current compatibility matrix, so verify the versions together rather than relying on a guessed pairing.
- The port is already in use: select an available local service port using the driver service configuration and ensure your test connects to the service URL that was actually started.
- An old snippet fails with current Selenium: use the Selenium 4 pattern of ChromeOptions plus RemoteWebDriver for this documented Opera route. Treat Selenium 2/3 capability examples as legacy rather than copying them unchanged.
- Selenium Manager does not solve OperaDriver setup: Manager is documented for most supported browser combinations, not explicitly for Opera. Use Opera’s driver instructions unless authoritative current documentation adds Opera support.
- Attaching to an existing browser fails: confirm Opera was launched with
--remote-debugging-portand that the debugger address configured for the driver points to that same port. This mode is not the same as allowing OperaDriver to launch Opera.
Desktop Opera versus Android
This guide focuses on desktop Chromium-based Opera, where Opera’s current-documented setup path is clearest. The OperaChromiumDriver repository also contains Android and Appium material, but the available setup pages do not verify present-day Android compatibility. Re-check those instructions and the relevant Appium/browser versions before using them for a current mobile test suite.
Or skip the browser setup
If your goal is to capture a page image or PDF rather than exercise interactive browser behavior, ScreenshotNeo offers a one-request screenshot API. It is not a Selenium replacement for interaction and assertions. Its options include PNG, JPEG or WebP screenshots, PDFs, full-page capture, element capture, viewport and device settings, waits, custom CSS and JavaScript, and bulk capture. For capturing examples here, use the documented API call:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://example.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. Before capture, it accepts cookie/consent banners like a visitor and removes 60+ known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Bot checks/CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and the response identifies the page verdict and billing status in headers. An MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents. The Free plan includes 1,000 shots per month without a card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can Selenium Manager configure OperaDriver automatically?
The Selenium documentation reviewed describes Manager for most supported browsers but does not promise OperaDriver support. Follow Opera’s driver-specific instructions unless current authoritative documentation confirms support.
Can Selenium automate Opera on Android with this setup?
The code in this guide is for desktop Chromium-based Opera. The repository includes Android/Appium material, but the available setup pages do not verify current Android compatibility.
